Cork has a population of over 210000 people it is located in the south of the country and has a rich history of entrepreneurship and innovation one of the key factors driving corks startup scene is its proximity to university college cork ucc and the cork institute of technology cit both of which have a strong focus on research and innovation these institutions have produced many successful startups over the years including trustev acquired by transunion inhance technology and pch international in addition to the universities cork is also home to a number of established companies that have helped foster a culture of innovation in the area these include apple which has a large presence in the city as well as emc dell and many others some of the key historical events associated with cork include the irish war of independence and the irish civil war both of which had a significant impact on the city and its people in terms of economic indicators the unemployment rate in cork is around 55 which is slightly higher than the national average however the citys gdp per capita is higher than the national average and the living wage in cork is estimated to be around 1230 per hour the startup scene in cork is relatively small but growing there are a number of coworking spaces and incubators in the city including the rubicon centre and republic of work which provide support and resources to startups the rate of new companies starting in the area is increasing and there is a strong sense of community among local entrepreneurs
