In July of 2014, the crypto-world was introduced to the idea of a blockchain democracy, when <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Larimer" target="_blank">Dan Larimer</a> invented a new consensus algorithm for a decentralized exchange called Bitshares. This algorithm was called delegated proof-of-stake (DPOS) and it had the unusual property of encouraging its users to elect its network’s block producers or masternodes.
