Too Long; Didn't Read
Software engineering is a great career, but it has a dark side: On-call. It pulls negatively against your work/life balance by requiring you to tether yourself to work in your off-hours. If you're salaried, it sneakily dilutes your economic worth. Engineers are generally pretty well compensated. But on-call is a necessary evil, and everyone on the team shares in the suffering. It would be suboptimal to assign more tickets to more engineers just to ensure that there are enough experts for a given service.
