You hear about vibe coding from every second YouTube video. Startups brag about “agentic AI” and founders tweet screenshots of prompts generating full-stack apps in minutes. Even more, tech giants mention that their top engineers haven’t written code in months thanks to AI tools. For instance, Spotify has accelerated coding and deployment, shipping over 50 updates in 2025 and positioning AI as central to its future development model. So are developers obsolete? Let me start from personal experience. Before joining the army and stepping away from day-to-day copywriting at my agency, I wrote professionally for more than a decade. When GPT-3 came out, people began asking me if AI would replace writers and whether I was afraid. I wasn’t because I understood the principle: writing isn’t typing. It’s thinking. Large language models can generate paragraphs and juggle terminology. They can even mimic tone but they aren’t accountable. They don’t define strategy and don’t decide what should not be said. Similarly with code: AI accelerates execution but it does not replace vision. What we are witnessing now is not the disappearance of developers, but a shift in where value sits. At the lower layers — syntax, boilerplate, repetitive functions — AI is already outperforming humans in speed and, increasingly, in adequacy. Prompt-driven development, auto-generated tests, refactoring agents, and design copilots compress weeks of work into days. But as abstraction increases, so does the cost of misunderstanding. And this is where experienced engineers — or, more precisely, system architects — become more important, not less. I’ve seen this firsthand through Unibrix, a software development firm from my hometown Cherkasy. Their teams don’t compete with AI tools — they co-create with them. AI is used across ideation, UI prototyping, architecture drafts, and code review. What used to take weeks now takes days, sometimes hours. One simple example: the company’s founder, Valera Oleksienko, built a lightweight product called Snap Nutrition in his spare time, leveraging AI tools to move from idea to traction within a month: he gained 12,000+ impressions and around 4,000 installs with 9% active users. But so is the constraint. Because leverage without judgment quickly turns into chaos. The recent surge of autonomous AI agents — from experimental frameworks like OpenClaw to more integrated ecosystems being absorbed by major players — illustrates both the promise and the fragility of this new layer. On the surface, it feels like a breakthrough moment: agents chaining tasks, writing code, deploying services, even debugging themselves. With OpenAI pushing toward tighter loops between reasoning and execution, and competitors like Claude rapidly closing the gap in coding and reasoning tasks, the direction is clear — more autonomy, less friction, faster translation from idea to product. But beneath that surface, the limitations are not incidental. They are structural. Recent security research already shows what happens when these systems move from demos into real environments. Exposed OpenClaw instances have been found leaking sensitive configurations and operational data, effectively turning autonomous agents into attack surfaces rather than productivity tools. In parallel, attackers have demonstrated the ability to extract agent configurations and manipulate their behavior, highlighting how quickly these systems can be repurposed once deployed without proper oversight. Even outside of AI-native systems, the underlying infrastructure tells a similar story. A recent FreeBSD jail escape vulnerability showed how isolation — often assumed to be reliable — can break at the filesystem level, exposing entire environments when a single boundary fails. When AI agents are layered on top of such systems, generating and executing code dynamically, these risks don’t disappear — they compound. This is the part that is easy to miss. LLMs do not “understand” systems; they predict plausible sequences. They hallucinate APIs, misconfigure infrastructure, and fail precisely at the edge cases where production systems tend to break. In a demo, this looks like magic. At scale, it becomes a generator of technical debt — and sometimes, of vulnerabilities — at machine speed. And the more complex the system, the more expensive a small mistake becomes. This is why the narrative of “AI replacing developers” misses the point. What we are actually seeing is a shift toward micro-staffing: smaller, highly capable teams, augmented by AI, delivering what previously required entire departments. But smaller does not mean simpler. It means more responsibility concentrated in fewer hands. Instead of ten average developers, you now need two or three people who can think in systems — who understand trade-offs, scalability, integration, compliance, and long-term maintenance, and who can operate one layer above the code itself. That analogy becomes even more relevant here. Because if AI is leverage — and it clearly is — then the constraint shifts to the human operating it: their clarity, their judgment, and their ability to structure problems before attempting to solve them. Without that layer, AI doesn’t eliminate complexity. It multiplies it. The practical implications are already visible. If you need a simple landing page or a personal website, you can build it in under an hour with no-code tools and AI prompts. If you’re launching a small business with slightly more complexity — integrations, workflows, hosting — you’ll either spend hours debugging AI-generated edge cases or hire a freelancer to stabilize it. But if you envision a scalable SaaS platform, start a Web2 or Web3 startup, or digitize a corporate vertical with real compliance and integration requirements, the equation changes entirely.
