Dragon Quest 12 is official. While details are still thin, Square Enix unveiled Dragon Quest: The Flame of Fate, the next installment in the series, during the Dragon Quest Day event to celebrate the franchise's 35th anniversary.
It's almost hard to believe, but the original Dragon Quest launched for the Nintendo Famicom game system on May 27, 1986. Dragon Quest creator and game designer Yuji Horii guest a special guest for the livestream.
Now, the announcement teaser was just a logo and title reveal for the game. Still, Horii did share some details during the event. The event host JOY spoke about how the teaser made it seem like a darker and more adult version of Dragon Quest. Horii stated that the game is about "having options" and players will choose their "own way of how to play."
Horii also added, "It's kind of like you're in control of the game or your life." In terms of the gameplay, Horii revealed that changes will be made to the Command Battle. Additionally, Horii stated that Square Enix is developing the game for a simultaneous worldwide release.

Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate Officially Announced

Horii was cagey with regards to what platforms and hardware the game will be available. Previously, Dragon Quest 11 was released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. It was later released Nintendo Switch, Windows PC and Xbox One.
