Incantations are a type of Magic in Elden Ring that depend on the Faith stat and can heal, buff, or deal damage. With both offensive and defensive capabilities, incantation builds are considered an alternative to sorceries.

For players who still aren’t convinced about the value of incantations, consider checking out our guide on the five best PvP builds that dominate the battlefield. Faith builds that focus on Incantations make some of the strongest builds on this list.

In this guide, I will explain how to unlock incantations in Elden Ring, where to buy them, as well as how to cast and use them.

How to Get Sacred Seals and Unlock Incantations

To unlock incantations, players will need to get an item called Sacred Seal. Sacred Seals are to incantations what staves are to sorceries. They are a type of weapon and players have various options to choose from. The earliest players can unlock a Sacred Seal is when selecting a starting class.

Specifically, the Confessor and the Prophet classes both begin with a Finger Seal, which is used to cast incantations.

The main difference between the two classes is the starting equipment. The Prophet starts with 16 Faith and two strong incantations (Heal and Catch Flame), while the Confessor starts with 14 faith and two weaker incantations (Urgent Heal and Assassin’s Approach).

For those that chose to start with any other class but still wish to try incantations, there is an option available. In such cases, players can buy the Finger Seal from the Twin Maiden Husks for 800 Runes when they unlock Roundtable Hold.

With the Finger Seal unlocked, which is the tool required to cast spells, the next step is getting the actual incantations. Let’s see how to get them.

Where to Buy Incantations in Elden Ring

One of the simplest ways of getting incantations is by buying them from specific vendors. In the world of Elden Ring, there are five vendors who sell incantations and here are all of them:

  1. Brother Corhyn - Found in Roundtable Hold - Corhyn sells basic incantations and players can expand their incantation selection by giving him Prayerbooks.
  2. Miriel Pastor of Vows - Found in the Church of Vows - Sells support-focused incantations and players can expand their incantation selection by giving him Prayerbooks.
  3. D, the Hunter of the Dead - Found near the Tibia Mariner Field Boss   - Sells Fundamentalist spells
  4. Gowry - Found in Caelid, in Gowry’s Shack  - Sells Rot incarnations
  5. Gurranq the Beast Clergyman- Found in the Bestial Sanctum  - Sells Bestial incantations and unlocks new incantations whenever players give him Deathroots.

Other than vendors and prayerbooks, players can get incantations from chests or corpses around the world, as a reward for killing various bosses, by killing Teardrop Scarabs, through the Church of Dragon Communion, and by exchanging Remembrances with Finger Reader Enia in Roundtable Hold.

How to Cast and Use Incantations in Elden Ring

With the weapon and the incantations secured, players can now start casting incantations.

Here’s everything players need to do to cast and use incantations in Elden Ring:

  1. Make sure they have any Finger Seal equipped and have purchased the incantations they want to cast.
  2. Visit any Site of Lost Grace and open the menu
  3. Select ‘Memorize Spell’ to access their Memory Slots.
  4. Select the incantations they want to equip and leave the Site of Lost Grace.
  5. While roaming in the open world, players can press the up button on the D-pad to cycle through the equipped spells.
  6. With the incantation selected and the weapon in their hands, all that’s left is to use a light or heavy attack to cast the equipped spell.

And that’s all. With practice, players will be able to rotate through multiple incantations while in combat and thus combine various elements and buffs to defeat any enemy necessary.

What are Memory Slots and How to Get More

To equip an incantation in Elden Ring, players need to have a Memory Slot available. These are, as their name suggests, slots that determine how many incantations (or sorceries) players can have equipped at one time.

To increase their Memory Slots, players will need to find Memory Stones. These are key items that can be found all around the open world and each of them unlocks one Memory Slot.

Specifically, there are eight memory stones available in Elden Ring and their exact locations can be seen in the video below.

With the memory slots increased, players are now ready to spread havoc through the world of Elden Ring with incantations.

Wrapping up

That’s everything players need to know regarding incantations in Elden Ring, including how to unlock them, where to buy them, and how to use and cast them.

While all these can seem complicated, with a little practice it becomes muscle memory. After a while, players can master the incantation system and thrive in both PvE and PvP scenarios.
