At the end of last year email marketing had become by far the largest recurring expense in our business. We were spending 10x as much on Emails than on anything else. The worst was that costs grew at the same rate we were growing: Adding about 10,000 new email subscribers each month meant that even if we regularly removed no longer engaged subscribers from our list, the amount we were spending was still increasing way too fast to be healthy.
