After stumbling on the latest Coindesk ranking of universities for blockchain and where the University of Nicosia (UNIC) stands, I couldn’t help but drop these few lines. Clinching to the 39th spot is not sad but startling for me, and this could be for several reasons.
I admit that I haven't explored a blockchain-related learning course with any other established university except for UNIC. While I don’t mean to speak for all, I also believe many blockchain enthusiasts in parts of Africa and Europe, or other continents that I may not know, would share a similar view. Shout out to TalTech too! So, in a way, UNIC is somewhat close to home. Or, based on interest, has been the main source of the relevant industry-based information that we have seen. We have accessed ongoing teachings in the Cyprus-based institution from our respective locations. As a result, a form of familiarity has grown, I’d say, or a sort of bonding.
Another factor could be the language of tutelage. UNIC uses the English language. Those who understand the language and seek credible courses for free at the same time find it easier. They make it their first choice to get started with blockchain. This is evident in the ranking by my count. At least 15 of the higher-ranked institutions above UNIC are not offering related courses in English.
I don’t expect UNIC to top the list when it comes to any blockchain-related ranking. Yes, 39th out of sampled 240 universities is good. But 3.9 on a scale of 1 to 5 is, like I mentioned, startling.
Blockchain technology - and its attendant evolution - continues to gain traction globally
It seems surreal to me though. I know UNIC offers courses including free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that could get you started with blockchain. These courses can set one on a career path that could eventually change everything forever. I have even been a part of several learning initiatives put out by the university - I never tried any other institution. It makes me feel like being in a community. These initiatives could mean a starter for some and a networking point for others.
It’s not just about that
The methodCoindesk used to determine final scores for the ranking set out four primary categories. There is the institution’s strength in research and academic contributions to advancing the field. There are also the existing blockchain offerings on campus whether in classes, educational centers, clubs, etc, and employment and industry outcomes. Lastly, the overall academic reputation. UNIC's rank is eighth for campus blockchain offerings. But its reputation is very poor - 50th of the top 50 universities. I see where the challenge lies and I hope UNIC would be able to work on this key highlighted area of evaluation.
The measure of the trust and gratitude I now have for UNIC's delivery to Africans, in particular, has grown. Regardless of my point of view, though, I wish to see UNIC rank higher on any table. It would be my pleasure to see this be the case as more students set off on this technological journey. Nonetheless, it seems to me it’ll take UNIC more effort to climb higher on the ladder.
