Amazon Web Services will invest at least $5 billion in South Korea by 2031 to build new artificial intelligence data centers in Ulsan South Korea, reports Reuters. South Korea's presidential office announced in conjunction with AWS at this week'd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2025 summit.


WSJ further clarified, Amazon’s cloud-computing arm will spend an additional seven trillion won, equivalent to $4.89 billion, from 2025 to 2031 to expand its AI infrastructure in South Korea. The new investment would bring AWS’s total investment in South Korea to 12.6 trillion won, i.e. $8.8B+ USD.


AWS CEO Matt Garmin said via LinkedIn that the investment would "strengthen cloud and AI infrastructure to fuel growth and innovation across industries. It’s an exciting time for the region—and I’m looking forward to what we’ll build together."


South Korean President Lee Jae-myung called this "the largest-ever greenfield investment in Korea’s history." KED Global reports he said, “We wholeheartedly welcome Amazon’s decision. This partnership will accelerate Korea’s AI ecosystem and strengthen our bridge to global prosperity."
