Howdy Hackers!

I’m Roy Derks! A tech speaker, writer, and software developer from the Netherlands!

I’ve been nominated for the categories below, and if you've enjoyed anything I've written this year, please take some time to vote for me.

I’m nominated for multiple Noonies 2022 awards, show your support and vote for me:

What's your current role and what do you like about it?

I’m focused on creating content and products for developers, especially around GraphQL. I want to make the adoption of GraphQL as simple as possible for developers, for example by creating tutorials around GraphQL and my work at StepZen.

How did you get into Programming?

Next to working with computers, I always liked watching movies and tv shows. When I was growing up, there were no streaming platforms, and people used DVDs to watch movies. As they were expensive, I built a website to trade DVDs with other people - for free!

How did you get into writing about Programming?

At one of my startups, I started using React and liked it so much I wanted to tell everyone about it. To share my knowledge, I created a blog and started writing down tutorials about React and later GraphQL and TypeScript.

When Elon Musk achieves his dream of getting us to Mars, what technology do you think would be important on Mars and why?

Getting to Mars would be an amazing challenge on its own, but if we do get there, I’d like to think computer science remains important. The same technologies we use on our computers on Earth will be important on Mars, just hoping the Wifi there is as good :)

What is your least favorite thing about programming?

Debugging code at 3AM in the morning, but I think nobody actually enjoys that part of the job. However, when you do get to solve that one bug in the early morning, sleeping after feels so much better than laying awake at night…

What’s a technology you’re currently learning or excited to learn?

Different implementations of GraphQL and TypeScript. The two languages are so complementary to each other that I’d like to learn more about the tools around them and how they work together.
