KILT is a blockchain-based decentralised identity protocol that has introduced digital identity-based technology that allows users to have web3names. On KILT, digital identity is defined by a decentralised identifier (DID) – a one-of-a-kind sequence of alphanumeric characters — and whatever credentials one may associate with it. A machine, service, IoT use case, or anything beyond that that requires an identity can be assigned an identifier.

Web3names are the Future of the Internet

Web3name is a new approach to describing one's digital identity that is both personal and recognized, and it is another part of making Web3 simpler to use and become available to everyone.

One's name shall be theirs permanently when they have it, and no one else can take it. There are no extra charges or fees for renewal. This identification can be associated with one's KILT address and any or all of their Polkadot addresses, rendering it easy for others to connect to the user. This will be expanded to chains outside of the Polkadot ecosystem in the coming future.

Individuals can also produce credentials certifying possession of their email address or accounts such as GitHub, Discord, or Twitter through SocialKYC, an authentication service developed on KILT, and connect them to their DID and web3name, establishing an added degree of trust. The web3name is rooted on the KILT blockchain. The KILT Sporran wallet allows it to be connected to any specific address on any blockchain in the Polkadot ecosystem.

This is particularly beneficial for the ecosystem's collators and verifiers, as it allows them to connect their web3name to either of their domains. They can be clearly recognized thanks to web3name, which promotes integrity and brand impact.

Collators and validators can also decide to render their SocialKYC identities public by linking them to a service address, for instance, a GitHub or IPFS URL. This strategy increases confidence by providing contact details and other data to nominators and delegators.

How Does DID Strengthen Identity in Web3

The purpose of web3name is to boost one's identification. As a result, it serves as an addition rather than replacing an address. Even though a web3name can be associated with an address, it is not advised as a complete rebuild for one because:

  • any user can choose to give up their web3name, which another user could then adopt with a different address; and
  • any user can choose to give up their web3name, which another user could then adopt with a different address.

Although each identification can only have one web3name, one can generate various identities with unique web3names, such as one's job identity, collator identity, gaming identity, and so on.

Understanding DIDSign

When utilizing DIDsign, a KILT-based program that allows users to log and authenticate files decentralized, web3name creates additional verification. Any digital material – PDFs, Word documents, audio, video, and software — may be verified immediately in one's browser, downloaded, and transferred via any zip file-compatible method.

The receiver has the added security of perceiving their web3name and any credentials the user wants to associate with it, on top of verifying that the file has not been modified.
