The first computers cost millions of dollars in their day, the equivalent of tens of millions today. The corporations that made them sold a few dozen at most in a year. Both the computers themselves, called mainframes, and the companies that made them were gigantic, slow, lumbering beasts. And programming was a slow lumbering task.
