Have you ever wondered where the term “Metaverse” was first coined? Short answer: In 1992’s best-seller, Snow Crash, written by Neal Stephenson. It details a Pizza Delivery boy / Hacker, impoverished in Reality, but a pioneer in the Metaverse, on a journey for answers. After looking at the industry, Neal has partnered with the Co-founder of the Bitcoin Foundation, Peter Vessenes, to create the infrastructure for the Metaverse. Welcome Lamina1 (L1).

Lamina1 is a Layer-1 blockchain purpose-built to empower the open Metaverse. L1’s chain technology, cryptographic model, and intellectual property partnerships will establish it as the preferred destination for this generation’s most creative minds while being carbon-negative. The company started operations in May 2022 and has been making waves in the Crypto Community.

The goal is to provide the economic rails for creators to build & be compensated for their digital objects or societies the community uses. The emphasis on a truly Open cultured Metaverse ecosystem that supplies those with opt-in mechanisms is a foundational principle for L1.

This powerhouse team brings together integral Subject Matter Experts, like Neal Stephenson (OG Metaverse Visionary who predicted the use of Crypto & Metaverse, Peter Vessenes (BlockChain Genuis), and Tony Parisi( Former Head of AR/VR at Unity Engines), with decades of industry expertise all aligning with the question: How is this going to impact the creators that we want to support and build the space that we want to build?

Lamina1 intends to provide all the capabilities developers need including Web SDKs, a high priority on Unreal and Unity engines, and template toolkits, making it accessible for creators & artists to produce without a technical background. L1 strives to create a simple process that allows anyone the ability to intuitively use web & engine tools to make your imaginations a reality in the Metaverse.

Using what the L1 team calls, Proof of Integration, Nodes are programmed to reward those who are building content. If you make digital objects and they’re used by Lamina1 participants in a game, the system will directly mint you tokens. The Community has always and will always be the #1 focus of the Lamina1 Platform.

With the idea to be one interconnected infrastructure with an immersive front end, L1 aims to fork from the Avalanche chain due to its best-in-class performance characteristics and use of side-chains to allow an easy way for developers to have free & fast transactions. L1 also plans to support EVM compatibility and be interoperable among a variety of blockchains; to lead the metaverse through a set of distributed system services that power virtual worlds.

As a founding member of the “Open Metaverse Standards Forum”, Lamina1 differentiates itself from other metaverse platforms by prioritizing social interaction and creating fun experiences with the flexibility to be social with friends, like the Fortnite and Roblox games. This is a crucial aspect of L1 and will prove to be another guiding principle; users want to have social interactions while playing or participating in a game setting. Similar to the notion of "Background TV”, where friends will put on a show while they talk and interact with each other. Lamina1 plans to take this principle a step further to make online social interactions more engaging and realistic in games for the Metaverse.

Regarding L1’s token, there is no plan for an ICO as the team will use institutional investors to provide the necessary capital with the goal for the token to accrue its value from actual transactional usage as a currency, not from speculation.

Overall, L1 is jam-packed with innovation, Blockchain Know-How, and a vision for what the future of gaming, socializing, and of course, the metaverse will look like. I will be following this project closely and reporting on all new updates. I will be writing GameFi pieces that I believe will gain in popularity as we get closer to true Metaverse capabilities. Please comment and reach out if you would like to get more involved in Lamina1.
