This model eschews positional embeddings and instead employs bi-directional ALiBi slopes to capture positional information. By training a series of embedding models with this innovative architecture on the Web document corpus C4 and subsequently fine-tuning them, we have enabled the encoding of the semantics of both short and long textual values into meaningful vector representations. This effort has produced a new suite of open-source embedding models capable of encoding texts containing up to 8192 tokens. These embeddings signify a 16x increase in the maximum sequence length compared to leading open-source embedding models. Additionally, our model suite exhibits competitive performance on the MTEB benchmark. The Nintendo Switch was released worldwide in 2017 and took the gaming landscape by storm. The console itself is a massive success and one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles ever, having sold over 85 million units, which bodes well for Nintendo considering the commercial failure that was the Wii U. But it also carved out its own unique niche with gamers because it doubled as a home console that can be hooked up to a TV but also a handheld gaming device. At the time in 2017, the premise was revolutionary, and the Switch’s ability to be played anywhere made up for its shortcomings in other areas, namely a lack of powerful hardware. After six years on the market, the console is starting to show its age. The Switch’s hardware is struggling to run games at a consistently playable framerate, and with the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, gamers have been wondering when Nintendo will enter into the current generation of consoles with a new console release. In this article, I’ll explore Nintendo’s console history by analyzing its previous releases and speculate on what the next Nintendo console could be and should offer if it wants to stand out in a crowded console gaming landscape. Nintendo’s Console History Before looking ahead to the future and trying to determine where Nintendo should go with its next release, I’d like to look back to the past at their previous consoles. Nintendo has a long history of creating groundbreaking consoles, and that history starts with the Nintendo Entertainment System, typically called the NES in America, and the Family Computer Disc System, or the Famicom for short, in Japan. The NES was released in 1983, followed by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, the Nintendo 64 in 1996, the Gamecube released in 2001, the Wii came out in 2006, and finally, the Wii U launched in 2012. When looking at the Nintendo family of consoles, three consoles stand head and shoulders above the rest as being the most innovative and impactful: The NES, the WII, the Wii U, and the Switch. The NES quite literally saved the gaming industry after it crashed in 1983 because of Nintendo’s proprietary cartridge designs. Cartridge gaming wasn't anything new when Nintendo made the NES, but the way they designed their console was. Prior to the NES, anyone could make a game for any console, and this led to a number of companies making extremely bad games and selling them as pure cash grabs to try and make as much money as possible. Eventually, gamers got tired of playing poorly developed games, so they stopped buying games and consoles altogether. Nintendo saw this and implemented a chip system in their consoles that required game cartridges to have specific chips in them to be able to interface with the NES and play games. Without those chips, games wouldn’t work on the console, and Nintendo had the final say over what games would and wouldn’t get their stamp of approval. Less games got approval, but that led to a higher quality of game releases, which revitalized the industry in the late 1980s. The Wii came about in 2006 and surprised everyone. Instead of focusing on traditional controller-based gameplay, Wii games were very much based around motion. The Wiimote and its attachment, the Nunchuk, allowed for previously unseen levels of freedom and interaction when playing games. Swinging your controller in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword caused you to actually swing your sword when you were trying to hit an enemy. Motion controls in gaming led to a feeling of immersion because instead of just watching actions playing out on screen, you were physically causing them to happen. The Wii U did for portable console gaming what the Wii did for motion controls in gaming. By creating a gamepad that could either mirror the image on your TV screen or allow you to play the game entirely on the gamepad while someone else used the TV, suddenly portable console gaming became not only possible but viable. There were some limitations, and its limited functionality did lead to it being a commercial failure, but the Wii U’s Gamepad offered something that had never been seen or done before in terms of console gaming. Finally, there’s Nintendo’s latest console release, the Switch, which doubles as both a handheld and a fully portable console that can be attached to and played on a TV. The Switch innovated in so many ways because it improved on almost all of the limitations of the Wii U by giving gamers a better, less bulky experience that was able to be taken anywhere instead of being limited by proximity to a console box. Improved motion controls that took a cue from the Nintendo Wii helped to round out the package. There’s no telling what the future could hold for the next Nintendo console. But Nintendo has a long history of making innovative and sometimes industry-defining consoles and either creating trends in the console market or taking existing ideas and giving them a new spin to make them more popular than ever. What Does The Future Look Like For The Next Nintendo Console? When asking what the next Nintendo console will be, the obvious answer is to wonder whether or not it will be a new iteration of the Switch, which is possible, but there are some pros and cons to that idea. Pros: The Nintendo Switch is already in the hands of millions of gamers worldwide, so releasing a Nintendo Switch 2 that’s similar to the current console with either some innovations or iterations could be a smart move by Nintendo. Instead of having to introduce and do marketing for a new console and design by explaining what it is and what it does, Nintendo could ride the power of the already extremely strong Nintendo Switch brand. Name Recognition: Comfort: Gamers are already used to the Switch, so having a Switch 2 release that’s similar to the original would make them more likely to buy one if it was the next Nintendo console than they would be to buy a new console with a new design. Cons: Portable consoles will most likely always be weaker than stationary console counterparts because portable consoles have to be able to be taken anywhere, which means that they have to be made large enough to use, but small enough to be compact and able to be easily put in a bag or a carrying case. Hardware limitations: These smaller designs mean that there is less room for airflow, which is necessary to cool larger and more powerful pieces of hardware like graphics cards that heat up during use. Smaller hardware means less powerful hardware as an end result, and in an era where not only is 60 frames per second gaming becoming the norm, but also 4K gaming, that could be difficult to achieve in a portable package. Gamers invested in the Switch ecosystem could be hesitant to buy into a new platform if they’re happy with the console they already have and don’t feel the need or the desire for an upgrade. What Should Nintendo Do To Get Gamers Attention Given the strength of the Nintendo Switch, if Nintendo decides to create the next Nintendo console, the company will have to do something innovative to get the attention of the gaming industry at large, but also to set its new console apart from the Switch if it wants to continue to build brand awareness and capture market share. One possibility for that would be for Nintendo to focus on virtual reality, which isn’t uncharted territory because Nintendo did create its own VR platform in the Virtual Boy decades ago. What Nintendo would or could do with VR isn’t clear, but a full-scale Legend of Zelda game could be an incredible experience. Final Thoughts On The Next Nintendo Console: In conclusion, there is no real definitive answer to whether the next Nintendo console should be a Switch 2 or something new. There would certainly be benefits to there being a sequel to the Switch; similar branding would help increase the power and recognition of the Brand and be able to catch the consumer’s attention much more easily than a new console would be able to. But there’s also the possibility that Nintendo releasing the same kind of console twice in a row could be harmful to its brand because of consumers' expectations of innovation. Whatever Nintendo decides to do with its next console, it’s clear that the bar is extremely high, but given Nintendo’s pedigree for success, I have no doubt that they’ll be able to clear it.

In this article, I will tell you how to write a telegram bot that integrates with the real world via a microcontroller (Arduino). Everything is remembered better in practice. Whether we are interfacing with our health provider or we are chatting with our friends through social media, we are still using the same channels that act as surveillance supply chains. In other words, the competitive dynamics of surveillance have created powerful economies that drive these new innovative firms to produce better behavioral-prediction products towards their goal of fine-tuning a herd of people with subtle and subliminal cues, rewards, and punishments that shunt us towards their more profitable outcomes. This means that companies like Facebook and Google are concentrating an unprecedented amount of knowledge towards predicting our futures for the sake of their own profits. The more information they compile with their products, the more competitive advantage they will have on the markets. What can users do to stop and prevent this problem? First of all, a change in public opinion must be achieved. This process would ideally begin with the awakening to a sense of indignation and outrage, where society finally says d“enough is enough”. Second, the support of a regulatory framework might be key towards moving beyond privacy and antitrust laws. We need to develop new regulatory institutions that can specifically address the operative mechanisms of surveillance capitalism. The ethos behind the Metaverse is the creation of a digital space for us to live, socialize, and work — that transcends the space-time of our physical world. Web 1.0 was the period of time describing the advent of the Internet. The term Web 2.0, however, was coined by O’Reilly and others between 1999 and 2004 — the early years post-Web 1.0. Web 2.0 catapulted the world from simple static desktop web pages designed mainly for news — to interactive experiences, user-generated content, and marketplace economics that brought us NASDAQ giants like Uber, Facebook, and Twitter. Web 2.0 was mobile-first, social-first, and cloud-only. This unlocked trillions of value for the global economy but, in doing so, we, as consumers, gave up a lot of agency over outlives in favor of the services that were provided to us by a handful of companies. Since we have had both our personal and financial information exposed in many hacks over the last years, we are no longer comfortable with these companies holding our data. As a result, we’re entering a new era of the internet: Web 3.0 (or Web3) for short. An era that champions open, trustless, and permissionless networks. What if I told you that all hours that you spend carefully building your digital image can disappear in a blink of an eye — purely on the whim of a few individuals? You’d probably think twice about investing your time on that platform. But what are the chances of that happening, right? It happens every day — to the thousands of accounts that break the community guidelines established by platforms like TikTok and Twitter. And that’s not to say that companies aren’t in the right — they ultimately have the final say on what can and can’t be posted on their platforms. And we agree to those conditions in the T&C when we join the platform. OK — but what if we could exactly keep all the content that made for each platform? What if we could move our content from platform to platform, curating each feed based on the context of the platform? These platforms would look a lot less like walled gardens, and more like open platforms that wrap content in a delightful user experience — potentially providing services on top of the core experience as a way to monetize. Then these platforms would have to compete for the best experience and the best services — a lot like how banks have to differentiate their services, products, and customer experience to compete for our money. In order for that to happen, we need to have true ownership of our digital content — and thus our digital identity. As the world becomes more digital, the need for trustless digital ownership will arise, and NFTs will solve that need. In summary, just as industrial capitalism claimed the world’s natural resources for economic benefit, the digital multi-billion companies are expropriating our private experiences to produce behavioral data that will ultimately be used in the marketplace. Users’ information is collected through opaque algorithms that regulate our actions. Just as the Industrial Revolution came with more cost-effective production models for cheaper goods, the Information Age is coming up with quantitative and qualitative models that can gather almost all existing information about anything. Computers, indeed, have become an extension of our own brains. For instance, an Apple Watch is an extension that helps us to track our steps, count our hours of sleep, understand our environmental factors. Also, the Internet of Things devices like Smart TVs, smart homes… help us to go the extra mile with 5G networks, self-driving cars, and even optimized services like Facebook Messenger, Apple Wallet, and more complex video editing applications. Nevertheless, even though corporate-controlled the means of production and held the power under industrial capitalism, its workers and consumer still could retain their power by organizing for a fair share of the wealth they generated by boycotting unethical products. However, in the digital era of surveillance capitalism, these counteracting forces are no longer interdependent. The reason for that is that, instead of labor, surveillance capitalism needs every aspect of human experience. This ecosystem of information is controlled by only a handful of powerful companies that determine how information is exchanged. As a consequence, the power structures in the marketplace are shifting. For instance, if you want to use a GPS, you must give up your location. If you want to download music or have a video call with your friends, then you must agree to their terms of service and privacy agreements. Therefore, there is no negotiation in the digital marketplaces. In fact, it can be deemed as a unilateral relationship in which users have no guarantees of safety or protection and no way of claiming back their information once it has been collected. This can explain the techniques that helped advertisements to improve up to the point where they can do much more than just promote certain products. Advertising has, therefore, evolved from making us believe we wanted something to know exactly what we want, and when and where we want that. But not the time-traveling kind. I’ve been trying to get a timestamp generated by the backend of a smartphone app. The arbitrary system of reference for time that we use is something we usually don’t even think about. After all, there is also the Chinese calendar, the Jewish calendar, and even the Mayan calendar. But for some reason, a religion decided to take the winter solstice and make it a reference point, and we all followed suit. Never mind that they didn’t have the leap year correction under control and that their official celebration date moved 4 days to the 25th until they corrected it. And it took 10 full days of drift for our official calendar to catch up. But when it comes to computers there are also many calendars going around. I was happily working on the back end and decided to use their “Windows time”. My embedded background makes me shiver at storing a timestamp as a string, so I was happily using the 64 bit Double that the calls were giving back. And then the back-end and front-end time worlds collided… As you can see from , every operating system invented its own “time reference point”. this table in Wikipedia Windows happens to keep the time as the number of 100 nanoseconds since the 1. of January of 1601. W.T.F? Why 1600? Why 100 Nanoseconds? The iOS world is not much better. They keep the time as a double, and their origin is the 1. 1. 2001. Their time takes negative values so they pretty much have it covered for the next 10,000 years. And since we know that agriculture is about 10,000 years old it is highly that they can resolve any date that might be found in a history book. However, you do need to find a common point to get timestamps converted back and forth. And here is where the Unix time comes in handy. The 1. of January of 1970. Microsoft couldn’t care less about the iPhone time, and Apple does not give a rat’s tail about Windows’ flirt with the renaissance. But they both talk to grandpa Unix and its younger version Linux. So, my timestamps are now handily kept in seconds since the 1.1.1970 But if you think you have seen it all when it comes to time, let me show you another timestamp: Wed Aug 27 13:08:45 +0000 2008 Yes, somebody at decided to be different and moved the year to the end to their text representation of their timestamp. Twitter I bet that there is someone out there with wide grins counting developers that smash half an hour of their time to fire up the debugger and sort out the format. They somehow had to even out all the good they did when they released bootstrap. An interesting trivia. Did you know that Linus Torvalds was born on the 28th of December of 1969? Just 3 days before “Linux time zero”… Will a future AI based archeology system decide that Linus birthday is the real reason for the reference point of Linux time? And since we are on a trivia spree. Did you know that a bit less than a billion and a half seconds have ticked since that date?
