From the smart contracts and the proof-of-stake functionality of Ethereum to the proof-of-stake mechanism on Solana, to newer blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem (including Injective, Atom, Celestia, etc.) all growing rapidly and becoming more interconnected. Built on these different blockchains are several products, including games, DeFi (Decentralized Finance), lending and borrowing protocols, NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), RWAs (Real World Assets), and many more. One of the latest protocols to launch on the Bitcoin ecosystem, and one that has quickly made waves across the entire crypto space, is the Rune Protocol. The foundation for Rune’s development is closely tied to the rise of the Ordinals protocol. Since Ordinals was introduced, the DeFi ecosystem on Bitcoin has experienced marked growth, paving the way for fungible tokens. What are Runes? Casey Rodarmor, driven by his passion for innovation, was the force behind the creation of the Ordinals protocol. In September 2023, he took his vision further by developing Rune. His goal was to revolutionize the way fungible tokens were issued and controlled directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. In an interview on the Bankless YouTube channel, Casey highlighted that establishing a robust fungible token protocol for Bitcoin could greatly expand its user base, attract more developers, and boost transaction fee revenue. DeFi revolves around fungible tokens. Fungible tokens are digital assets that can be exchanged for other digital assets. They are used to facilitate lending, borrowing, and decentralized exchanges. Although Bitcoin provides a safe, decentralized base for the development of DeFi applications, Ethereum leads in the DeFi department due to its flexibility in the creation of tokens. For fungible tokens, however, the core architecture of Bitcoin poses a problem (taking Omni Layer as an example where the complicated structure of the system is increased by the system’s reliance on extra layers constructed on top of Bitcoin). With Runes, on the other hand, there’s a significant shift as they enhance direct token operations by leveraging the Bitcoin blockchain itself. The Runes protocol is built on a UTXO-based (Unspent Transaction Outputs) foundation that facilitates a more minute transaction management and is consistent with Bitcoin’s original design. How does the Rune Protocol work? Runes are the basic units representing fungible tokens at the center of the protocol. In solid contrast to Ethereum’s ERC-20 standard, the Bitcoin UTXO system comes with Runes built in. Each Rune can be uniquely identified by its Rune ID, which also contains data regarding its value and current output. Three (3) concepts establish the framework of the Runes protocol, namely; 1. UTXOs 2. Runestones 3. OP_RETURN The protocol functions using a mechanism in which each transaction output represents unspent Bitcoin that can be used as input for a new transaction. The OP_RETURN function is a Bitcoin opcode that makes it possible to include data in a transaction without compromising its legitimacy. Community members went as far as to stage protests out front, holding signs condemning the noise. Others didn’t object to the building’s construction or operation. While some saw it as an innovative move, others were apathetic because their once-rural oasis had already become a minimetropolis. Cloud computing technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) are also pushing demand exponentially higher. Many modern technologies are power-hungry and water-thirsty. They need cutting-edge servers and a tremendous amount of storage to function. Whether companies train a machine learning model or store 8K videos on cloud servers, they need data centers. While data center proliferation has been on the rise for years, it only became a well-known point of contention recently when AI’s popularity prompted firms to reinvest in server warehouses. Why are data centers being built in Virginia? Decision-makers are quickly making this state the so-called “data center capital of the world” for good reason. While some counties are inviting tech companies in hopes of inspiring a second Silicon Valley, others are just in convenient locations — the land and labor are cheap in rural areas. Of course, the robust electric and telecommunications infrastructure helps. How These Buildings Impact Nearby Neighborhoods Why are people against data centers? One of the public’s biggest complaints is noise — many don’t realize how loud these buildings are until they live next to one. Water Drainage Cooling a massive warehouse packed to the brim with servers, routers, storage systems, and processors takes a lot of water. Research shows one large data center can use up between 1 million and 5 million gallons of water daily — which is enough to supply a town of 10,000-50,000 people. Noise Pollution Many data centers have on-site generators. Their cooling systems — essential for keeping hardware operational — contain intake and exhaust fans, which are objectionably loud. They produce between 55 and 85 dB typically. The noise is even more noticeable in rural areas where massive, nondescript buildings replace spaces that used to be forests or farmland. Are data centers noisy at night? Most are since they run around the clock. Even if their volume doesn’t increase after hours, their loudness is more noticeable when it gets quiet. The health of local communities and ecosystems may also be at stake. If data centers use generators for on-site power, they could produce toxic pollutants like nitrogen oxide or diesel exhaust. The cooling system’s noise alone could drive local wildlife away, damaging environmentally sensitive areas. Counties that initially welcomed large technology and cloud computing companies with open arms have wavered after realizing how loud and resource-intensive these structures are. Many may soon raise taxes on hardware, revise their noise ordinances, or enforce strict project review processes to make it worthwhile. Are Communities’ Data Center Fears Justified? The worst-case scenario is using 5 million gallons of water, outputting 85 dB, and producing toxic diesel exhaust daily. That said, most data centers will be noisy and resource-intensive. Air cooling is loud but standard, accounting for 99% of methods in use today. However, that doesn’t mean engineers and operators are unwilling to change to help their unhappy neighbors. The Great Oak Homeowners Association is an excellent example of this fact. While Amazon initially denied the residents’ claims its building was outputting 60 dB — even going as far as to conduct a strategically engineered study to back its claim — it eventually took action. One year after the spat between the AWS data centers and the Great Oak community made headlines, Amazon lengthened its exhaust tubes and directed airflow vertically. Measurements from it and the Homeowners Association revealed the noise leveldropped by 10 dB to about 50 dB, effectively cutting it in half. Currently, it seems decision-makers aren’t considering the long-term repercussions of building near neighborhoods — they’re quickly seizing whatever land is cheap and available. To ease communities’ fears, they should consider their projects’ long-term viability, accounting for how construction and operation will affect nearby residents and local ecosystems. When considering all of the negatives in a vacuum, data centers sound like one of the worst structures a company could ever build. However, they support essential services and help connect people around the world. Most of today’s problems are growing pains — now that engineers and operators know what not to do, they can build better or retrofit existing buildings. For example, while air cooling generates significant noise, immersion cooling — which involves submerging hardware in a non-conductive liquid — apparently sounds considerably quieter in comparison. Engineers could also use on-site renewables to reduce their reliance on the city’s power and water supply, further easing residents’ concerns. What Companies and Communities Can Do Going Forward Gathering and implementing feedback is the only way to permanently ease communities’ concerns. This strategy may even pay off for technology companies because it streamlines site research and lets them know what interventions to prioritize. We are all aware that AI is a hot button topic at the moment. It is something that’s attributed to just about everything, from deep fakes to stand up comedy, but how can AI help change the healthcare system in America? I recently sat down with Ramya Ganti, a tech expert in the healthcare space and the CEO of BabySteps, a women’s health startup. She has years of experience in expanding access to healthcare across the country, and offers insights into the field. Her work experience is vast, starting in a teaching hospital at Vanderbilt, and then expanding into AI and health tech fields with Thoughtful AI and Fortune 500 company BCG. She believes in creating a more efficient healthcare system that passes the savings along to the patients. Decluttering the system, and creating less confusion are at the core of Ganti’s beliefs and she was very thorough in her analysis of the United States healthcare system. Below is my best summation of what she said and how AI will help to build a stronger healthcare system that will ultimately benefit the people that matter the most: patients. What Is the Big Issue? “It all starts with an understanding of one of the biggest issues facing the healthcare system, and that issue has always been lack of efficiency,” said Ganti. “There are so many tasks that take up the time of doctors and hospital administrators that can be streamlined by the use of advanced technology such as AI.” Let’s begin by looking at a few examples she laid out for me. AI will help to speed up finding out what the diagnosis is for each patient, as well as accelerate drug development. Off to a good start already, but also it helps to streamline clinical trials, which leads to a more efficient delivery system. It can even help to automate the biggest system cloggers, administrative tasks, which in her words, “reduces the burden on healthcare providers allowing them to focus more on patient care.” Patient care is key, let’s face it. These efficiencies are welcomed on both sides, as it reduces the cost for the healthcare providers, allowing the trickle down effect of making healthcare more affordable for the patients. So what does the efficiency actually look like? Increasing Efficiency According to a Citigroup report, there will be a 25 to 30 percent reduction in administrative costs, thanks to an increase in automation of administrative tasks. AI-powered image analysis can help speed up disease detection by up to 90 percent, which leads to accelerated diagnosis leading to faster response times to medical issues. It helps nurses, too. Healthcare is one field where the use of AI increases the person-to-person contact. It does so by more accurately matching patients with doctors. She says “I’m excited to see the significant impact this innovation will have.” For decades, the thought of not talking with another human being was looked down upon, but the innovation surrounding AI chatbots allows for a more efficient solution. Ganti sees a number of positive effects these chatbots are having. For example, they offer round the clock access to information, which reduces the unnecessary trips to the emergency room. Allowing patients to input their symptoms and get a preliminary assessment allows them to learn the severity of their illness, and whether a doctor's visit is required, saving money, especially for self-pay patients. And that’s not all, AI chatbots can also help with appointment scheduling once again helping to reduce administrative duties in the office. Now we know how AI is currently helping but what’s next? We are on the cusp of improving the healthcare system beyond what we had ever imagined. The next step in AI involves a deeper level of integration and personalization, and it's a major step with massive benefits for both patients and hospitals. AI can truly help with all levels of personal care. “We can see AI systems put into place that continuously analyze patient data to detect early warning signs of deterioration, as well as helping support clinicians in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer,” said Ganti. But it goes even beyond that. Operations efficiency, something that has lagged with overburdened hospitals, will improve. Predicting patient volume, resource allocation and even supply chain management, are all tasks more suited for an AI program. Ganti circles back to one of the biggest issues that hospitals face: “AI will aid with administrative duties through Robotic Process Automation, freeing up the staff for more patient care,” she said. “More time spent with patients is a fundamental benefit of integrating AI into hospitals.” Looking into the future, AI can help through augmenting intelligence. This will empower healthcare professionals and help to enhance their capabilities. It will go a step further, Ganti believes, by “ensuring AI systems are designed to complement human expertise and workflow.” Finally, getting to the heart of one of the major issues that has plagued the American healthcare system, is the wait times at doctor’s offices and hospitals.
