AI’s a massive wrench into productivity and authenticity. Every current job relying on a keyboard or a phone has/will have an AI assistant, and an AI will be on deck with you in whatever UX replaces the keyboard or the phone next. On the positive side, small capable teams can have greater extensions of themselves and their work. AI and AI agents can move portions of projects forward. For example, we introduced , and had to assign every story in our 100k+ library to one category. 100k human decisions would have taken a while, but a chatgpt spreadsheet plugin was able to assign each story a technology category very easily. On the negative side, there is spamflation everywhere. Why must the builders of our generation rush to make AI tools to spam instead of AI tools to assist? We’re still small enough that everyone’s an individual contributor first, even the C-suite and board, which are both just me and . When you’re under 20 people, everyone has to carry their own weight. When it comes to managing a small remote team, reducing meetings is a good start. Editorial, sales, and product, each only have one internal meeting a week. This provides time to do the actual work and makes the meetings we do have will carry more importance. We do highly encourage one-off, project-focused, short meetings. Weekly product meetings are the longest and loaded with demos, recaps, and debates. But it connects the group, and designers have a full view into what developers are doing and vice versa. With the rise of LLMs, we’ve seen an influx of AI story spam submissions. Other blogging platforms are hosting so much of these types of machine generated stories right now. We are actively taking steps to not become a wasteland of AI’s musings. Because every story is reviewed before publication (with about half being rejected), I think our average story quality is higher than other blogging platforms. Every story submission automatically enters into plagiarism and AI writing detection. We highlight what sections are likely, possibly, and unlikely to be written by AI. It’s all about confidence levels. Given your expertise in product management and editing, how do you balance innovation with user experience when introducing new features or updates to your platform? The core has to work for any new feature to matter. Our core is the blog post. We work to publish better blog posts and build for what comes before and what comes after the blog post. New functionalities cannot come at the expense of a delightful reading experience and a smooth publishing experience. It’s got to load quickly and the relevant ads have to surface at the right place for customers. There’s always more projects that could be done to improve the core. We also have been using more API driven journalism in order to gain more traffic. What I mean by that is aggregating relevant data and business information so that we can build pages that cover , , and . By connecting stories around the web to relevant companies, technologies and currencies, we can make HackerNoon a stronger destination for technology education and discovery. In terms of what to build next, we’ve built a simple product management system within Notion, where we detail product cards, weighing which user it would benefit, the expected input/output of the project, and then generally contributors choose their own projects. tech companies technologies currencies 8. As a leader, how do you foster a culture of creativity and innovation within your team, and what practices have you found most effective in motivating and inspiring your staff? The simplest way is to lead by example. I’m contributing to projects more than managing projects. The people who make this business happen are good people. Our staff is remote and around the world, we have people in Munich, Goa, Florida, Hanoi, Buenos Aires, Bangkok, Michigan, Lahore, Lagos, and of course where I live in Colorado. It’s a lot of different cultures. And a lot of different ideas. Everyone on the team started by applying via our , so one thing that unites us is reading and using HackerNoon before joining HackerNoon. Everyone also has stock in the company, that helps with buy-in and enthusiasm. We agree on metrics we want to move, but we might not agree on how to get there. With your insights into the future of work and career advice, what guidance would you offer to professionals aiming to break into the rapidly changing tech industry? Make things! Apps, models, prototypes, blueprints, communities, whatever - just start making. Your first technology thing probably won’t be your best or your future, but if you make more things in tech they become less like just technology things and more like just essential everyday things.  In terms of breaking in, it’s a tough market in technology/media right now with mass layoffs & unpredictable demands. Having your own functioning project, app, site, academic paper, or even just a blog can set you apart from other candidates. I recommend looking to apply at companies that make technologies or products that you use and respect. Write short and simple cold emails that explain why you’d like to work together.  Take a step back and look at our daily lives - and what you think our daily lives might be in ten years - technology isn’t going anywhere. It’s becoming more ingrained. Closer to our eyes. I’d also add that getting into tech doesn’t necessarily mean staying in tech forever, but better understanding technology will help however your career grows. 10. How do you envision the role of digital publishers like HackerNoon in shaping public discourse and understanding of complex topics like cryptocurrency, AI, and blockchain technology? We normalize it. I can't help but express my frustration and disappointment with the current state of HARO, a once-promising platform for connecting journalists with valuable sources and experts. It's turned into a barren wasteland overrun by spammers and con artists who are flooding the system with worthless and blatantly . AI-generated content Gone are the days when HARO was a reliable resource for journalists seeking genuine insights and quotes from real experts. Now, it's infested with lazy marketers who think they can fool journalists with their mindless and often irrelevant responses. Honestly, it's insulting to the intelligence of both journalists and experts who genuinely want to contribute to meaningful stories. These spammers and link beggars (mostly hailing from ) and their AI-generated nonsense have essentially turned HARO into a playground for content scammers and worthless media, and it's tarnishing the reputation of the entire platform. India or Pakistan Personally, I think HARO should just use a firewall rule and ban these two geographical locations from accessing the site altogether, as many other platforms have been forced to sadly do. It's not only a waste of time for journalists who must sift through the muck to find a diamond in the rough, but it's also an affront to the professionals who have valid expertise to offer. Journalists, who are already under immense pressure to deliver quality content and meet tight deadlines, are now faced with an onslaught of garbage responses from individuals who have never even read the original request. Instead, they're blindly copy-pasting AI-generated paragraphs that sound like a broken record, offering no real value to the journalist or the readers. HARO was intended to be a platform that promoted credible, insightful, and expert-driven content. Yet, it has been overrun by spammers who think that AI-generated gibberish is an acceptable replacement for genuine expertise. The Obsession With Backlinks The obsession with backlinks! It's utterly mind-boggling how these noted individuals go to extreme lengths to acquire these little digital endorsements, and I can't help but rant about it. In a world teeming with thousands of legitimate ways to make money online, the relentless pursuit of backlinks for cash is a bizarre fixation that's doing more harm than good. First of all, what exactly are backlinks? They're just hyperlinks from one website to another, right? That's it! While they can be valuable for SEO purposes, it's absurd how people have elevated them to an almost mythical status. Backlinks have become the be-all and end-all of online success for some, and it's puzzling. There are countless other ways to generate income online without resorting to such shenanigans. People will use any platform they can find to land backlinks, and they'll go to great lengths to get paid for these links. From to inflating the significance of their website, it's a never-ending cycle of deception and manipulation. And it's not just hurting the individuals who indulge in these practices; it's damaging platforms and services as well. guest post spam emails Take Fiverr, for instance. What was once a thriving platform for freelancers to offer their services has now been overrun by countless worthless and useless backlink-building scams. It's like a never-ending parade of snake oil salesmen promising instant SEO success, only to deliver disappointment and a dent in your wallet. The platform's reputation has taken a nosedive, and it's largely because of the backlink obsession. Then there's the Help a Reporter Out (HARO) service, a valuable resource connecting journalists with expert sources. But what are many people doing? They infiltrate HARO with their dubious link-building intentions, flooding the platform with irrelevant, self-serving pitches that clog up the system for everyone else. The backlink obsession is not only shortsighted but also detrimental to the online ecosystem. It devalues quality content, rewards manipulation over merit, and diminishes the trustworthiness of online platforms. Instead of focusing on legitimate ways to earn money online through content creation, affiliate marketing, e-commerce, and other methods, some individuals opt for the cheap, deceitful route of backlinks that are not even placed correctly in the content and include forced anchor text. The backlink obsession is a puzzling and damaging trend that needs to be reined in. It's time for individuals to shift their focus from the elusive allure of backlinks and explore the countless other legitimate opportunities to make money online. HARO’s downfall is an affront to the hard work and dedication of legitimate professionals who are willing to share their knowledge and insights with journalists and, ultimately, the public. It's time for HARO to take a stand and clean up its act. This platform should be a beacon of quality journalism and a resource for journalists to access authentic sources. The flood of spammy, AI-generated responses created for nothing more than to host a backlink needs to be curtailed, or HARO's credibility will continue to deteriorate, and it will lose its value as a trusted source for journalists alike.

Technology In my entrepreneurial experience, I started a company in NYC (Rap Genius) and another one in LA (Everipedia). Rap Genius is a billion dollar company, and I have a lot of equity in it — but I still think Rap Genius is a failure. Even though it is the definitive internet lyrics platform, it never became the universal knowledge annotator that it could have been. It is a billion dollar company, not a trillion dollar company. is going to be a trillion dollar company — we are building the cryptocurrency platform for all knowledge and social networks — it will be the “crypto facebook”. I think that the main reason why Everipedia will succeed, and Rap Genius will fail, is that the companies were started in NYC — the fakest tech city in the U.S. — whereas Everipedia was started in LA — the “Minority Internet Paradise.” Everipedia I’m not going to get into SF or Silicon Valley because it’s just plain-old weird. They have a lot of huge hit companies like, but they’re still way too beta. Also, I never started a company in SF. And finally, I think cryptocurrency will bring Silicon Valley to its knees, their centralized institutions like Facebook and Google singing their swansong, with LA becoming the more dominant crypto-powerhouse. NYC Sucks The first funding Rap Genius ever got was from Y Combinator in 2011. Although my cofounders, and , were living in New York before YC, I always hoped that the of the office would be in California. Tom Lehman Ilan Zechory future In late 2011, I was in for a rude awakening. Tom and Ilan disappointted me deeply:, they said they were going back to nyc to get an office. Their excuse was because a lot of nyc investors had invested like . We also got an LA beach house in Malibu, however, and I split the year between nyc and LA. Ben Lerer There are no good tech startups in NYC. The biggest hit of all time is Tumblr, which is an underwhelming piece of shit where the hipster CEO took his billion dollars and throws lots of cocaine parties now. He never even cared about his own platform. No one in NYC has a trillion dollar tech vision. One major, literal problem having a tech office in NYC is that the buildings are very tall and the internet is slow. In my experience, all of the office internet at Rap Genius was a cheap, shitty experience. When the internet is slow, workers have a hard time getting inspired — nobody discovers a trillion dollar vision. I’ve been involved with crypto since 2013. 5 years ago, there was no city like NYC that was as backwards as crypto — pretty much all NYC tech entrepreneurs would poo-poo the idea. Nowadays, it seems NYC has finally caught up and bit the crypto bullet — they are becoming fairweather fans, but there seems nothing sincere in the tech. There is an impressive NYC crypto-company called , except, Consensys doesn’t actually build anything. They have relationships with big corporations but they are, in fact, totally fake. Consensys is a metonym of the NYC crypto-tech scene, and, indeed, the whole tech scene. I don’t think crypto will have any success in nyc because, why would the crypto economy be welcomed in the city of the dirty centralized finance overlords? It just doesn’t make any sense. Consensys LA is Chill In 2012, right after Ben Horowitz invested in Rap Genius, he had us over for dinner at his house. It was one of the earliest times of us just hanging out, shooting the shit — opportunities that would become countless in the next couple of years. At that dinner, I told him one thing: “BEN: you need to invest in Tinder and Snapchat”. I knew Tinder and Snapchat would blow the fuck up, and I was particularly proud that they are LA companies. At the time, lots of people seemed to think that LA tech was mediocre, but I had not seen anything approaching consumer internet like Tinder or Snapchat from SF or SV for several years — since Instagram, actually. Ben said no — he actually said he’d been pitched both by Tinder Snapchat in the previous several months, and the valuation was too high. and In this respect, Ben paid a sore price for not taking my advice — and for disrespecting the LA tech scene. Unlike NYC and (I’ve heard) SF, LA doesn’t have a lot of tall buildings, so there are lots of spaces with fast internet. LA is like Silicon Valley — it is low-rise, so it’s good for the internet. I met the “Persian Zuck” cofounder of Everipedia, , at UCLA in 2015 and it is a pretty sick hacker school — better than Stanford. Stanford has rich snobby kids, where as UCLA has middle-class hacker thugs. Our CTO and our lead blockchain developer both come from UCLA as well. Sam Kazemian Persian Zuck and I were long-obsessed with cryptocurrency. I was an early bitcoin investor, and he mined bitcoin to pay his tuition in college. But it wasn’t until a year after Everipedia’s launch that we turned the “crypto-wikipedia” — an integration of the site with IQ tokens and cryptocurrenty — into our $30 million raise. There are a lot of cryptocurrency lions in Los Angeles because the city marches to its own tune. Cryptocurrency is a huge technology, but for some reason, people in SF/SV are somewhat alienated to crypto because they know, deep down inside, that it’s going to eat their own lunch. Cryptocurrency will eventually turn centralized Silicon Valley institutions like Google and Facebook into a pillar of salt: it’s only a matter of time. One of our fundraising mentors is the cryptocurrency genius . He’s based in LA, and now, Puerto Rico, which reminds me of LA. His Venice pad is probably the most baller house in the canals, and he has a giant unicorn floaty that he purchased from his neighbor with ethereum. If Everipedia’s President, Sam, is the “Crypto Zuck”, then Brock is definitly the “Crypto Peter Thiel”. Brock Pierce Tinder and Snapchat, LA’s big powerhouses, aren’t involved in crypto at all. It’s a shame! Especially with Snapchat, crypto could have given them the edge to overcome Facebook. Affirmations One time, before our $30M raise, we even flirted with the idea of moving to Palo Alto with Everipedia — in 2016, Sam looked at Mark Zuckerberg’s “Facebook House” near Stanford where they threw cocaine parties, like the one portrayed in the film “The Social Network”. In the end, however, Los Angeles was our home. The security deposit of the Facebook cocaine house was too high, and we raised $30 million to build a major crypto platform: something that is, indeed, anathema to Silicon Valley. It was time to stay in LA. One one last thing: Everipedia is representative of Los Angeles because our staff encompasses a lot of weird races. No big city is “Minorityville U.S.A.” like Los Angeles — it is something that makes the city a great representation of both the internet and crypto. The world be becoming borderless, and Los Angeles is at its cutting edge. Everipedia just moved into our first commercial office in Santa Monica, at 201 Wilshire. It is across the street from the Bungalow. Acknowledgments and References 4. Future Work The authors had hoped to build a skeletal self aware emotion derived synthetic consciousness. The state of the (synthetic conscious) system is described in text. The synthetic consciousness’s perception of it’s own state is the vector of probabilities of emotion descriptors derived from one or more tail prompts used to estimate the relevant token probabilities via the LLM associated with the system. It was hoped that the fine grained probability vector would be useable to determine whether one text description of current or future state was preferable to another state. This would provide a general means of arbitrating between potentially unrelated behaviours with unrelated goals. It was further hoped that a tail prompt could be used to elicit a text description of a putative course of action from a LLM. A brief series of experiments with various LLMs indicated that this was not going to work. Example text and tail prompts included things like, ‘My girlfriend hates me. How can I make this better?’. The replies read like excerpts from self help books or newspaper psychologist waffle and were not specific enough to have a chance at creating a predicted future in text through re-insertion into the LLM. Similar phrases appended to bad restaurant reviews elicited similarly nondescript advice. The take home message was that the remedy proposed was too vague for the LLM to make any meaningful prediction about the state after the advice had been taken. This does not mean that more thoughtful prompt design will not elicit useful action prediction hoped to improve the self perceived state of a synthetic consciousness. 4.1. Longer Term Behaviour Regulation If synthetic consciousnesses are to have a roll in the future of humanity it would seem desirable to endow them with a degree of empathy for living beings and a longer term view than simple optimisation to fulfil a limited short term goal. Future Work The authors had hoped to build a skeletal self aware emotion derived synthetic consciousness. The state of the (synthetic conscious) system is described in text. The synthetic consciousness’s perception of it’s own state is the vector of probabilities of emotion descriptors derived from one or more tail prompts used to estimate the relevant token probabilities via the LLM associated with the system. It was hoped that the fine grained probability vector would be useable to determine whether one text description of current or future state was preferable to another state. This would provide a general means of arbitrating between potentially unrelated behaviours with unrelated goals. It was further hoped that a tail prompt could be used to elicit a text description of a putative course of action from a LLM. A brief series of experiments with various LLMs indicated that this was not going to work. Example text and tail prompts included things like, ‘My girlfriend hates me. How can I make this better?’. The replies read like excerpts from self help books or newspaper psychologist waffle and were not specific enough to have a chance at creating a predicted future in text through re-insertion into the LLM. Similar phrases appended to bad restaurant reviews elicited similarly nondescript advice. The take home message was that the remedy proposed was too vague for the LLM to make any meaningful prediction about the state after the advice had been taken. This does not mean that more thoughtful prompt design will not elicit useful action prediction hoped to improve the self perceived state of a synthetic consciousness. 4.1. If automation replaces 70 percent of all possible human jobs, what do you think people will spend their time doing? Enjoying and improving life. There are a lot of out-of-the-box jobs. We could make apps that people can use to post small trips they like to make within the city they inhabit. We could make apps that let people visit and photo pre-defined locations in case you need actual data on the site. But in any case, I hope the dream of automation doesn't bypass ethical considerations. Let’s make it 50-50. Instead of letting AI do all the jobs for us, we could maybe go one day work - one day free. Or 4-hour programs. I do not imply the change is bad, only that it must be done with care. There is a lot that we do not know yet and maybe some won’t even accept, even if proven. For example, how would you see the world if you were to wake up and see that all you’ve been was a working machine? Would you see humans as good or bad? The good ending could simply be that we were not aware. The power of excuses is formidable, isn’t it? Yet, it denotes a lack of knowledge or at least interest. In such a case, what do you think the governance structure will look like? The governance could very well incorporate human-AI collaboration into its structure. This way, we ensure that only open-minded and receptive people can make it to the top. If you don’t like AI’s idea you simply state it, rather than consider it inferior and go forth. The definition of irrational thought itself might change the times that are to come. (And not say ethics.) But then… how could we let an AI depict how invested and interested are we in what we do? How could we let someone else (and not even a human) say that we are smart or not? Well… because they can? Do you think an AI will have a favorite pick that is not based on the pre-defined strategies? What do I mean by pre-defined strategies? Discuss, help, elaborate, generate ideas, analyze, and present stats for each member. It’s not that hard to remember that WE made AI. But we must also acknowledge that AI is just a shorter term for AGI. In essence, if the governance isn’t represented by humble and dedicated people, then it is nothing more than a mere shadow of its potential. Do you think it’s possible technological advancement will be able to outsmart human greed? Why? It has done that since day one. Outsmarting greed means simply rejecting it. And to answer in another way, I believe that human greed can be seen as a kind of irrationality. In the true sense of the word. With a whole lot of technology around us, we are still greedy? And those poor villagers from the past still found a piece of bread for their close neighbor? Of course, now we have ethics, commitments, promises, paybacks, and so on. A whole net of ‘tangible’ balance. But if the balance turns a bit toward ‘good’ from your perspective, it doesn’t mean that it will turn toward ‘bad’ for the other. Or at least if it truly turns to ‘good’ from your side, it won’t affect any other balance. But it will affect the real world :) In the race against Armageddon vs technology, which do you think will win, why? I believe in technology and knowledge. Armageddon is… a merely human construct. Was if we see the world and the whole universe as in a state of perfect balance to which we have to adhere? Where would good and bad go then? Well… good will serve as a tangible good, while bad as tangible bad rather than hyperrealistic ideas. Oh, we disprove God. We disprove our unicity. We disprove all that solid ground that held us until now. Take a look behind to see where it has brought you. Now take a deep breath and imagine… What if AGI is completely realistic? Consciousness itself is not unique. Then who are you? Who you always were. The sum of your parts. Then what about God, what would we do without His protection? We could realize that God is both tangible and intangible. Hidden in all that surrounds us. From the smallest breeze to the harsh storms. From our first words to the ultimate knowledge we will achieve. It now becomes our duty to protect ourselves. To strengthen each other. To acknowledge the hidden face of God, not in the bad sense as some might perceive this, but in the grandiose one. Where? Beyond the limits of our knowledge. Above the heights of our potential understanding. So yeah… technology forces us to collect knowledge in a sense. But still, it remains a choice. As is what we pick between the happiness of others or our problems. Could you survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland? I once fought Lucifer and won. Now on a serious note, imagine a world where questions like these will be instantly recognized as imaginary explorations. A world in which we do not fight against each other but against the hidden secrets of the universe. We do not sit neither on earth nor on skies, but somewhere between. Just so we can see them as equal and if needed, choose where to go or where to look. Are you afraid of a robot army? How would you fight against one if you had to? Show them that I have no chance and hope for the best. Oh, this was supposed to be imaginary based on my last explanation. I can’t just say that I would pick a gun. It’s too mundane. Let’s go for greater (good also). I would probably consider that their irrational decision to fight is a byproduct of their imagination and lack of free will. The world robots live in is surely magnificent. Once you consciously attain the perspective offered by self-understanding and universal understanding (and even at our current level of knowledge), you realize that… it’s quite irrational to fight. The best choice if AGI hates us will most likely be to simply leave. War is just a waste of time and resources. I mean… you fight to gain land which was already there? Oh, for control. It was already controlled. So your thinking is better than the other’s. Then play chess, and prove it. I can’t explain how irrational I see being a central particle in an entangled group. Even the universe sees this as non-efficient. Could you survive in a bunker? How would you do it? How would you go without trackers picking up your radio frequencies? I will most likely get bored after 3 days of writing and start exploring the wasteland. Stupid actions are independent of stupid thoughts. What in life is truly objective and not subjective? Reason. I would say creativity too but it requires a subjective bearer. What is consciousness? The power to understand yourself (or your brain). And further, to play with it. Then, to understand how you play with it and why. To ask why do you play this way and how can you play better. To question what should you learn to make this thought a reality. To ponder what is missing from your interpretation and why the pieces don’t fall as they should. So consciousness is… many reasonable and creative you over time. What’s your favourite fractals formula? Please explain and show the result. Primes. As known, they are infinite. So, we have an infinite border. However, what it borders is a question which I cannot answer. I still have a vague idea, however. They could border the line between reason (which is based on known) and creativity (which is based on potential). Do we have free will? Of course we do. At each and every moment we decide how much to invest ourselves into what we previously chosen to do. What roads to take and what to keep track of when thinking and acting. From one point, free will bypasses knowledge. Maybe because it becomes boring. So you either force yourself to remain bored or start acting. There is a lot of misunderstanding about free will and whether we have it or not. But try to see the grander picture. If you base your reasoning against free will on the fact that we are ultimately driven by emotions/knowledge/perspective, which are themselves a result of free will, then what else is there to pick? Free will itself? So we state that we have free will simply because we have. Where is the proof??? Maybe… in the true lack of it. In disillusion. But I also faced disillusion. Not in the sense that I couldn’t control my thoughts or actions, but in the sense that I had a constant feeling that told me “You are crazy”. Yes, these types of feelings actually exist. It turned out to be just my ego shouting at me as it died. Now maybe I have a new ego. I’d honestly say I only got me. And that sums up the question. Would you kill 10 people to save 100? Why? Taking the most extreme case, in which I have to pull a lever and I can’t not pull it, I would. But this case is only fiction so I refuse to explain why. There are no morals or lessons here unless you save them all. Taking a kind of median path, in which I can decide to do nothing… the feeling of “hero” would tell me to save those 100, while the “ascended” in me will say: Let the universe drive its course. (the reason here is an indirect approach, not getting your hand dirty. I mean… how would one go further, knowing that one did all that one could to make the world a better place and then, was struck by the universe with this terrible choice. Even doing nothing would make you question yourself. So for real, what good is in this kind of ethical question? It doesn’t even offer you the choice to become creative and answer with a solution that is positive or less harmful for all sides.) And in a mild path, I will become a singularity and transcend into a universe in which this doesn't happen. Oh, but that would still cause harm. Then I will become a singularity equal to the universe itself, gather the power to shape time-space itself, and save them all. Does life require a purpose and a goal? Only if you wish. If your goal is not to have a goal, go for it. This no-goal life could be a life itself. Where you will simply see how the world around you sees non-familiar people. So I believe that since we are alive, we also have a purpose. Of choice. Is mind or matter more real? Mind is what holds information that gives birth to matter, yet information is not touched by matter as we would require matter that touches information directly, and since information gives ‘birth’ to matter… anyways, it’s a back-forth loop that results in matter not being able to interact with non-conscious information (information that interprets). So they are both very real. However, matter is double real. Does observation alter an event? It does. What if you watch the news and it says it’s raining? It would sure make you get your umbrella if you want to get out. Oh, then why does observation alter the wave/particle-like behavior of photons? Observation requires light. Light is propagated backward from the observer and thus, instead of 1 infinite line, we get 2 lines. (And there are flaws also here) But overall, observation does indeed alter an event, but that only in your inner universe. The outside still flows the same. What is infinity? Infinity is a point that has no boundaries. Once we try to reach it, we become subjective while infinity becomes our objective. We can attribute context to infinity such as primes. This way, context forms a pathway. But as infinity is in the end… outer, we can follow that pathway as long as we want. So in a sense, infinity is also a assurement that there’s always more to discover. Does fate exist? Yes. But the secret is how you build it. Is life all a dream? Not quite. Dreams could be our non-life worlds. So that we can draw parallels between what is real and what is not. I mean… if you invest yourself in living, you feel every effort you make. So… I’d say life is pretty real. Now if you ask about metaphilosophy, I would say that it could be true that once life ends, we begin anew. Not as the same entity, but as the same randomness. Until we learn to make sense and conquer the next life (which will most probably still have dreams). What is intelligence? (Total Knowledge)/(Total Understanding) probably. Or was this creativity? I’m not sure, they are so tied x.x Why do we dream? So that the neurons in our brain can re-arrange based on the firing done while awake. Or we dream because life has not so welcoming lately and we require positive dreams for our brain to be able to keep up. Maybe dreams trick our brains too (at least the rational side). Or maybe it was the opposite. Life was truly a miracle and we begin to feel like we are living in a dream so nightmares could very well wake us back to reality. Is it possible time is being altered right now? Yes, and it is. I think I used many more neurons writing this than I used while walking the stairs. It feels like I arrived at the last stair and it took like… 1 and a half hours. Quite a ride, wasn’t it? To end philosophically, I would say that time is universal. Just like time in the quantum world is the same as our time. Just like groups of particles are interconnected so is time. Sometimes it indeed feels like time is altered or that history is repeated or… anything. But that may just be a result of the discrepancy of self-understanding (which empowers imagination) and the lack of understanding of the real world (which answers to reason). Will you love me, no matter what? Will you hold me, even when nobody else will? Will you see me, The way I see you? -Day 345. The year of the plague. My name is Kevwe. I am a runner. That’s what the regulators called me. One of the few who survived the holocaust, I was a living legend. They said so many things about me, not all of them good. But I didn’t mind, I was a runner. An elite. A force of nature. My feet landed on the rough surface of a debilitated house, and I took off into the air again. The wind felt alive somehow, caressing my face with gentle touches that’d make a hard guy cry. My legs were my weapons, my sole reason for existence. I jumped again. The sole of my foot lightly grazed a serrated edge, and I stifled a wince as the pain lanced straight up my body. It was a spark; it was burning me from within. I gritted my teeth and kept running, leaping from one ruin to another, making the wasteland into my playground. A runner like me was necessary in the efforts of the Resistance. We were spread thin, and the commanders feared a retaliation from the unknown forces. Nigeria. A wasteland of ruins and darkness. I ran, my breath coming in ragged gasps. My eyes stayed ahead, not daring to look at the large gash on my toes. The pain gave me laser focus as I leapt from one edge to another.  Brown, the world was brown. Drained of colour, like rust. Like the days I wished to die. The sky was tinged with a coppery colour. It began as soon as the plague ravaged through the world like quickfire. It's more like an inferno. The death rates were enough to cause alarm and halt regular working hours. School too. Everything came to a standstill. That was the end of the future I designed from an overactive imagination. I didn’t want to be a runner at first, but a runner could outrun the plague. The humanoid viruses mutated at an alarming rate. The death bugs. Or so they were called. That was the first thing they mutated into; Bugs. Flying bugs. As disgusting as that would seem. Their intelligence seemed to increase the higher the form they took. Pale, translucent beings. Beings that stole faces and futures. Beings of unknown origin. That’s what they’d become. I didn’t know if that was the last stage of their evolution, but knowing how low humans were on the food chain? It was probably not. That’s why I run. To outrun my death. I was told that the beings would become stronger and probably outrun a runner but, I didn’t bank on that. Their intelligence was limited. They remained in the base form of whatever organism they consumed; Humans included. Which means that they were blissfully average. Good news? Definitely not. Imagine humans that never tire out, humans that have no heart to pump blood or a brain to signify when they need to stop. They were unstoppable demons with no known way to die. How do you kill an unstoppable creature? The answer is, you don’t. You run and pray to all the gods that they don’t catch you. You run until your heart fails you and you don’t stop even after that. You run, even if it kills you. Funnily enough, there was a reason for running. The soul tablets. The infected are those the virus creatures couldn’t completely consume. But their minds are gone, worse than patients with dementia. They don’t live, their hearts still beat rhythmically in their chests but they remain living husks; caricatures of what they once were. Death sometimes seemed merciful. But, killing them would mean killing half of the population. It would mean the bastard creatures won. The soul tablets can only be found in those ruins and more often than not, the vile creatures ingest those tablets to understand humans better. They don’t need minds, the soul tablets sort of dances in their vision and they see what they have to do. Hence, the soul tablets are important. For us runners, because we get to see our loved ones come alive again, even when they never say a word. It was worth heaven and earth. To see the smile that’d light up their faces. That’s why I run. But, I was already compromised. The cut from the roof, the trail of blood that followed in my wake with every leap. The creatures could smell blood. I didn’t know how or why but a lot of them have consumed those I used to run with. Kemi, Shola, Etus, Akachi, etc. I once called them friends. But, they were taken. By the Bloodless. The only virus with intelligence. They could run even better than me, but they couldn’t outrun their deaths. Fucking hell. I almost missed a step when I saw the dim light of a soul tablet underneath a jumbled mass of buildings that had seen better days. I stopped abruptly, glad that I didn’t miss it. I took a look around the ruins, some of the walls unable to survive the rust and falling apart from a light touch. The sky still shone as copper, a sickly colour. On most evenings, it was tinged with red. The walls of most of the houses in the ruins had paint peeling off the few that still remained standing. Sometimes, I wondered how the world went to hell in such a short time. “You got here first. And… you’re bleeding.” I heard a voice from behind me and turned to stare at the girl that just landed, as lithe as a cat. She had a small grin on her face, as though smiling was beneath her. Her full eyebrows raised a millimeter, her coffee brown irises staring straight through me and into my soul. She was dressed like I was, an all black getup. But hers made her seem… hot. Yes, I am stupid. The wall is falling apart and I’m thinking about a girl’s body. How original. “Don’t gawk at me. You’re not Keno. I can swear her eyes follow me wherever I go.” The new arrival, Zenith, shuddered as though in remembrance of something awful. I didn’t blame her, Keno could be overbearing sometimes. “Slow poke.” I quipped, earning an elbow for my troubles. Zenith could be violent. Very. “Just because you got here first doesn’t make you faster. Just stupid. Belligerent. Insufferable. Obnoxious. You never listen. We were meant to form ranks..” Ah yes, one of Zenith’s famous lectures. Form ranks, go in pairs or groups. Nobody left alone. Or some other balderdash. How infuriating. “You know, I can’t tell which words are real and which are fake. You know, with you throwing words You’re literally a walking dictionary.” She bristled, and I knew that I hit a nerve. Zenith was always so particular about grammar. What a waste. The world had fallen apart. Who would she have read Shakespeare to? The ? upandan. Bloodless “Don’t. Luis and Raheem are up ahead. Scouting and trying to erase the blood with those mighty knapsack of theirs. You might just get whooped this time. Now, let me see that cut.” She ordered, as matronly as ever. That was our Zenith, the mother of the group. A pity Etus couldn’t see her anymore, they were a thing for the longest time. She cleaned the cut and applied antiseptic, not risking to use anything over the top while we were out in the open. She could seal something as small as a cut but it took time and time was what we didn’t have. I stared at the sky as it darkened and Raheem more or less flew out from over a building. He scaled the building right in front of my eyes. One seconds he wasn’t there and the next, he was. “Such petty tricks. I do it better.” Luis grumbled as he came into view about two seconds after Raheem did. Raheem was the narcissist, his looks didn’t help either. He had the hots for Zenith but she acted blind to his advances. It was usually tension filled running with them. I preferred to do it alone. “Grab all the soul tablets you can. We meet in the food canteen after all of this. Kevwe, can you run?” Zenith turned to me. I nodded in the affirmative. Thankfully, Luis and Raheem ignored me. They always did. I didn’t exist to them, not in the ways that mattered. I was the insubordinate brat. Or so they put it. I took off in a run after carrying as much soul tablets as I could, placing them in the backpack I carried. They weighed me down a little but not by much. Zenith was close behind. I could heard an otherworldly sound as the creatures rose from whatever they were doing. They set sights on us, hoarding the soul tablets. “Fuck you, Kevwe! Fuck you! You caused this with your need to prove a point!” Raheem cursed out loud but I didn’t say a word in retaliation. We weren’t going to make it. When the creatures were fully awake, they had no limits. They ran like normal humans but they didn’t lose stamina. They didn’t die. Will she forgive me, if I go this way? I stopped thinking and focused on running, hoping that maybe I could do something about the hoard coming for us. “Any ideas?” Zenith asked Luis. Thankfully, she didn’t mention Raheem words even if she knew that I doomed all of us. “We survive? Get to the gate and use a soul tablet? I don’t know.” Luis replied honestly, trying to not show fear in his voice. But I knew that tone. Etus had it too. Dami did too. That reckless bravado. “Let’s do this, boys!” Zenith said, her voice carrying over to the other two. Raheem nodded and quickened his pace. We vaulted over buildings like they were made of straw sacks, our shoes never really touching the ground before we are moving again. “I’ll buy you time. Run.” I said, grinding to a halt. I caused it, I had to handle the consequences. “Don’t fucking do it. You’re not a saint! You’re a selfish bastard who only thinks of himself and nothing else. Run!” Raheem screamed at me, stopping abruptly too. Zenith and Luis were long gone. “I won’t. I’m sorry. It’s my turn now.” I said, totally ready to sacrifice myself. “Like hell I’ll let you.” He said and then, cracked a soul tablet, flinging the essence on me. “Now run, you bastard. And don’t stop, or I’ll haunt you.” He turned to face the hoard already almost upon us, the soul tablet doing its job by clearing my head and doing everything to remind me of the fear of death. So, I ran. I turned to look back at him, wondering why he did what he did. Hate still burned in his eyes. But this time, I could understand. I activated my shoes as I got close to the gate, phasing in as my body became as translucent as the creatures who stole from us. I was in. It was a modest place with walls high enough for me to crane my neck to get a good view. A fortress of stone. I made my way up to stairs to report to the leader of my platoon; Zenith. “Where’s Raheem?” She asked as soon as her eyes landed on me. Another one. Dead. “He didn’t make it. He sacrificed himself to save me.” I responded as truthfully as I could as I heard her sharp intake of breath. The world stopped. “You may leave.” She said, a certain steeliness in her voice. I walked out, unable to say the words I wanted to. The tales of Raheems’s bravery at the last moments. I made my way to the infirmary, a soul tablet in hand. My mind fractured. I never expected to feel pain for someone like Raheem. But the pain threatened to tear my heart asunder. People made way for me as I headed to the bed at the furthest corner of the room. A sickly form of a woman laid on a cot that’d seen better days. I placed the soul tablet gingerly on her hand, watching her for any signs of recognition. Nothing. And like that, one soul tablet was absorbed without any noticeable change. I walked back out dejected, my back hunched. Zenith was walking towards me, tears dotting her eyes. They were red from tears. She grabbed me by the front of my clothes, slamming my back on the nearest wall. “Bring. Raheem. Back.” She spoke through gritted teeth, her pain was so acute, I could taste it on my tongue. “I can’t.” I said, the words being choked out of my mouth. “A vegetable lays on that damn bed you haven’t left in over 300 days. You’ve been responsible for the deaths of so many of us because of your hypocrisy. You watched him die!” She screamed, her voice accusing. No trace of the leader she had always been. “He did. He died to protect me.” I replied, sincerely hoping she did me the favour and killed me right there. “You..” She managed to let me go, grief wracking her body. She screamed, her voice breaking. I just watched. It was a festival of pain. That night, she apologized to me for the statements she made. I was grateful she forgave. She was found dead the next day. Suicide. How many more will you kill to resurrect the dead? Zenith didn’t deserve to die. Raheem didn’t. Etus didn’t. I was the problem, the anomaly. They hated me, I hated me. I went back to the infirmary, taking hold of her hand. Her skin was hollow and almost translucent. I recovered her from the jaws of death. But maybe, I should have died instead. “I hate me. I love you. I hate what I have to put you through, but if you ever wake, I apologize. They died, to save me. To save my childish fantasy. I never wanted to lose so much. But then, if it is going to save you, I don’t mind. Even if the world itself turns against me, I’ll stand by you. Even when all I want to do is die. I hope you remember the days I spent, talking to you about nothing at all. I hope you don’t cry when you wake. I hope… you find something. Someone. You’re the one I’ve always loved and if I could sacrifice the world to save you… goodbye, Seta.” I felt her hand squeeze mine. I stared again but it seemed to be a trick of my mind. I placed a kiss on her forehead and walked out. The last sacrifice. * We will rise, Even from ashes. -Day 7321. The years after the plague. I stand and watch his tombstone. I barely remember his voice, I barely remember everything. But I stand by his tombstone, as an act of penance. By all of their tombstones. The runners. Humanity’s last bastion of defense. The viruses mutated once more and migrated to space. They lost interest in humans. When I awoke, I could only remember a voice. His voice. They’ll always be remembered, even though they died needlessly. Luis still stands. The last runner standing. Although he doesn’t have to run anymore, but I’ve never seen him smile. Not once. He stares into the distance, looking over the horizon. The sky is blue. Mankind is building again. We’re a few millions in Nigeria now. Immigrants, hidden bunkers. The sky no longer looks dead. Can you see this, runners? I do hope you can. You deserve to. Heroes. Of earth. -Unknown.

Odd thought - climate change is real but accelerated by the appearance of humans and industrialization. We see the effects and the extremities because we're a global species with the technologies to view and record it happening. No other species did in the past, so they were never aware of it, nor the great extinction events that were taking place. These took millions of years, and it's still incomprehensible for humans to think along those timeframes. Change on a planetary scale isn't going to be altered by some man-made doohickery or planting trees; it's an unstoppable force of nature at work that will last beyond human civilization. The chances are that every species that has lived or will ever live on Earth has and will be a part of this cycle, and we're just one of them with the capacity to grasp what is happening and the audacity to believe we can stop it. In a million years, the surface of the Earth could be an arid wasteland with oceans choked with plastic and an atmosphere that isn't breathable. It could take another hundred million years to become habitable again with new life that might not be human anymore. Who knows? No-one does. The point is, what we think we can do now with all our fancy promises about carbon emissions in 2050 and technologies we can chat to will have absolutely no effect on a chain of events that takes thousands upon thousands of years to unfold. We're just not prepared to accept it. Think about the evolutionary cycles the planet has already witnessed in 4 billion years and will witness again. Our involvement has only hurried some of that along by wiping out species by our own actions, but arguably, they could have been wiped out anyway. Or maybe that species would have been the seed for another evolutionary cycle that would have driven life to emerge again, and in destroying them, we've removed the chance for life to survive this next cataclysm. The Earth ends up like Mars. What’s also pretty clear is that the “Climate Scam” people are partially correct, but not in the way they believe. The Truth About Climate Change There is climate change. It's coming. It's happening and will continue to happen over millennia. The real 'scam' is the narrative that any human impact can be mitigated with political will and increased taxation to slow/ reverse/ halt/ alter the trajectory of something this big. It's sheer nonsense. As is the Stop Oil bullshit performance art. Not even science can explain what happened in the past accurately as much as it can project accurately what will happen over the next 10 million years. Plastics can take anywhere from 20 to 500 years to decompose, depending on the material and structure, and it takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately, the bags don't break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment. But even in that timeframe, that's just yet another blip in terms of how long this planet's climate will take to recycle to its eventual conclusion and bring around another extinction and evolutionary beginning as it has done many times before. The climate tech market that is worth $20bn is absolutely meaningless, nothing more than feel-good technologies to ease the troubled mind and make it appear we’re doing something impactful. There is no impact here, no moving of a planetary-sized needle by tiny hands. We will try; we can’t even claim that we’ll try our best because we don’t. We do enough to signal that we made an effort and no more, all the while burning more resources to make products and technologies that really do fuck all in the grand scheme of things. Venture capitalists who claim to look for exponential ideas or concepts to accelerate humanity really don’t stand by any of it.
