AN INDIAN'S TREACHERY

Hello everyone, in this article I want to introduce my last side project which is called Turtle, the project idea is totally inspired by the Turtle Graphics Project. What is the Turtle Graphics project? Today you may know Turtle graphics from the turtle implementation in the standard library in Python that allows you to control one or more turtles in a two-dimensional space, but the original one first appeared in the late 1960s as a key feature of the programming language called Logo which designed in 1967 by Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert, and Cynthia Solomon, you can read more information about Logo and some modern derivatives from . Wikipedia After I played with the turtle module in python and loved it, I searched on google play for Android Version with the same idea so I can have instructions, variables, control flow, data structures…etc, and I didn’t find any app with those features, so I decided to implement one as a side project. The first step is to have a programming language easy to write and understand the syntax so i created a small one with syntax like python and I called it Lilo (the name is from Lilo and Stitch animation and like logo), so we can have functions, if, loops, variables, constants and a set of instructions for drawing and control the colors but for now you can only control one turtle so here is one example to draw Rainbow Benzene in Python and Lilo. The Python version: The Lilo Version The result will be like this Lilo also provides a clean error and warns messages with line and column numbers so you can easily correct your script. If you are interested in a created programming language like Lilo you can start with those two amazing books Crafting Interpreters by Robert Nystrom Writing An Interpreter In Go by Thorsten Ball The next step after I created the programming language was to create a code editor for it and a preview screen, for the code editor I used the library to provide highlighter, auto complete, snippets, error and warn highlighter and for the diagnostics messages, I used library so you an expand or collapse errors, warns or both easily. For the 24th version of Unhashed, I reached out to Kurt Nielsen, the Co-Founder & President of , a Web 3.0 public blockchain built for trust, transparency, privacy, and lightning speed finalization. So, let’s dive straight into the interview. Partisia Blockchain Q1. Welcome to Unhashed. What’s your crypto story, and how did you get started with Partisia Blockchain? Answer: I was working on a Ph.D. in market design and game theory when I first heard about distributed cryptography and secure multiparty computation (MPC). MPC is a perfect match to the theory I was buried in at the time. My friend introduced me to one of the most prominent researchers in the field, Ivan Damgaard, and we hit it off. This was the beginning of a long collaboration about bringing MPC into commercial use. I have been working with MPC and distributed cryptography since 2004, first as a researcher and then as co-founder of Partisia since 2008. The first product was a DEX - a decentralized exchange with no single point of trust - built on MPC. I later co-founded Sepior, a pioneer in MPC-based key management, which is booming these days with larger players like SBI Holding, Paypal, and Coinbase buying into the technology. In 2017, we started to build blockchain applications and, more importantly, to merge blockchain and MPC technologies, which are two technologies that are destined to melt together. Partisia Blockchain is the result of this effort. Q2. "True sense of privacy and ownership," how do you define this? What are the most overlooked parts of how our money works? Answer: Let me break this question into two relatively short answers to what I would consider two very different but important questions. First, “true sense of privacy” is when the user controls who gets to see and use the user’s data. It is this level of control that defines ownership, although I don’t usually use the term “ownership” as it has different legal ramifications. This level of control needs to include the service providers as well; otherwise, the service provider can unilaterally profit by accumulating data across users - as we all know, this is the current dominating business model on the internet but not a fair one. Establishing a “true sense of privacy” is a difficult problem that is not at all solved by traditional blockchain technologies. Second, while blockchain provides real decentralized control of money, private money is a different matter. As mentioned, traditional blockchain is, in fact, orthogonal to a true sense of privacy as discussed above. For this discussion, it is important to distinguish between confidential data and anonymous users. For the most part, the current blockchain technology provides full transparency about transactions and some sort of anonymity about the users. While the lack of “private transactions” may prevent more mainstream and corporate adoption, introducing “private transactions” is a delicate matter. A much larger privacy problem is privacy around the data used prior to a transaction as opposed to the transaction itself. As an example, it may require the use of private data across hundreds of potential buyers and sellers to get to a single transaction. It is this massive use of private data that is our primary focus. Q3. ZKP is one of the highly idealized cryptographic tools. How do you explain its utility with regards to privacy and security for the layman? Also, please shed light on the need for standardizing ZKP computations. Answer: ZKP is a short form of zero-knowledge proof and the first step towards ZK computation. Consider the children’s game “Where's Wally,” and now try to prove that you found Wally without revealing Wally’s position in the picture. If you can do that, you actually practiced zero-knowledge proof. A straightforward and very tangible ZKP is for the “prover” to use a large cover paper and cut a hole that exactly captures Wally and nothing else, then put the cover paper on top of the “Where’s Wally” picture. Now the “verifier” can see Wally and the “prover” didn’t reveal anything but the image of Wally. This article provides the full story. ZK computation is, on the other hand, a generic distributed privacy-preserving computer that can compute any computations with arbitrary private input and output. ** Q4. Please brief us all about the proof of finalization and justification. How does it fare in comparison to resource-friendly consensus mechanisms like proof of stake? Answer: The consensus protocol on Partisia Blockchain is environmental-friendly and similar to Proof-of-Stake, except that the individual node’s vote will be weighed with a node-specific “trust score” as opposed to the node’s relative token holding. In the initial version of Partisia Blockchain, however, all nodes have equal voting power. The Proof-of-verification, -Justification, and -Finalization are components of the improved consensus model. Proof-of-Verification is a node-specific proof of the actual construction of the block in question. As such, this prevents nodes from blindly signing blocks without proper verification. Hereby it compensates for the concept of the “longest chain,” which is a very important property of Proof-of-Work i.e., that if you do not work on the longest chain, rewards are lost. The Proof-of-Justification is a single node’s proof of having received signatures from 2/3 or more nodes on the block in question. The Proof-of-Finalization is the first Proof-of-Justification of the next block, which indirectly proves that 2/3 or more of all nodes hold 2/3 or more signatures on the previous block. How does Partisia Blockchain sustain the balance between transparency and privacy? Answer: This is an important balance, as discussed in Q2. Partisia Blockchain consists of a fully transparent blockchain, and dedicated ZK nodes run a privacy-preserving computation in a separate second layer. The transactions on Partisia Blockchain belong to the transparent blockchain, and the privacy-preserving use of data is kept confidential forever. This provides a balance between transparency and privacy. However, since Partisia Blockchain is a generic network for the coordination of public and private information, it is possible to implement the auditability needed to justify any level of privacy. Concerning anonymity and identification, Partisia Blockchain provides an alternative as a platform for privacy-preserving self-sovereign identity. This is already tested in collaboration with three Swiss cantons. Concerning transactions and privacy, Partisia Blockchain makes it possible to create a fully compliant “private coin” by using Partisia Blockchain to audit the private transactions and run all the required fraud detection. This has already been developed for potential use as private cash for humanitarian aid. Q6. We now know that multiparty computation facilitates privacy-preserving computations. How does this layer of decentralization impact operational efficiency? Answer: Distributed computation requires more coordination as the nodes/servers involved need to agree on the state of a given operation. This is a common challenge for traditional blockchain and for MPC. The design of Partisia Blockchain, however, ensures that MPC does not slow down the blockchain part and vice versa. Also, Partisia Blockchain comes with so-called sharding or scalable parallelization of the entire blockchain. This means that congestion is solved by spinning up a new shard as opposed to a market that uses price to prioritize transactions. Wally Olins Olins advised many of the world’s leading organizations on identity, branding, communication and related matters including 3i, Akzo Nobel, Repsol, Q8, The Portuguese Tourist Board, BT, Renault, Volkswagen, Tata and Lloyd’s of London. He acted as an advisor both to McKinsey and Bain. The Brand Handbook and the idea behind the brand In his seminal “The Brand Handbook” Olins explains with concise penmanship what brands are, how to create them, how to make them work, and how to sustain them. At the core of the brand, he writes, are a clear identity and mission. Olins: “The fundamental idea behind the is that in everything the organization does, everything it owns, and everything it produces it should project . The most significant way in which this can be done is by making everything in and around the organization — its — and performance and, where this is appropriate, ” brand a clear idea of what it is and what its aims are products, environment, communication and behavior consistent in purpose in appearance too. Note how “appearance” comes last, here. The importance of purpose and consistency in branding Olins underlines the importance of working from the inside out when it comes to brand, purpose, and consistency: “Outward consistency of this kind will only be achieved, and for that matter is only appropriate if it is the manifestation of an inward consistency — a consistency of purpose. This consistency of purpose derives from the vision, or the core idea, and is almost always the base from which a successful branding program(me) can be developed. The . It is what the organization is about, what it stands for, what it believes in. All organizations are unique even if the products/services they make are more or less the same as those of their competitors. It is the company’s history, structure, strategy, the personalities who have created and driven it forward, its successes and its failures, that shape it and make it what it is.” core idea drives the organization The rightful place of the visual elements of a brand We are now starting to see the picture. are important, but they’re not at the core of what makes a brand. What is the correct placing in terms of importance, of the visual brand elements? Visual brand elements Firstly, what visual elements are we talking about? Visual elements can be construed as the visible and/or tangible things like colors, typefaces or fonts, taglines or slogans — the ‘look and feel’. This can also incorporate what a product or store smells like, or how a brand experience might sound — as in Gary Vaynerchuk’s “Sonic Branding”. According to Olins out of all the visual elements, the logo or symbol is the prime identifier for almost all brands, its purpose being to “present the core idea of the organization with impact, brevity and immediacy.” “The logo encapsulates the brand.” Together with the core idea, the visual elements mark out the brand territory. Expanding on these two core elements and clarifying the relation between them, Olins further introduces the four vectors through which a brand makes itself tangible. The four brand vectors In his “Brand Handbook” Olins describes the fundamental idea that there are four vectors through which a brand — as defined by its core idea and surface, visual elements — manifests itself. These four vectors are Product, Environment, Communication, and Behavior. — stands for the products/services the organization sells, how they look and feel, and what the User Experience is for these. Product — the physical and digital environment of the brand, how it “lays out its stall”. What does your store or your LinkedIn company page look like? Environment — how it tells people, every audience, about itself and what it’s doing — think, internal and external communications, storytelling, content strategy, copywriting and general tone of voice. Communication — how its people behave to each other and the world outside — think HR policy & processes, leadership and organizational culture, but also recruitment, sales professionals, marketers, and customer service representatives. Behavior The six elements of a successful brand At the core, as you can see the first and quintessential part or element of a brand is its core idea; , mission, and vision. your organization’s purpose The second element would be the visual brand, which is not a “loose” element but one that is ideally derived from the “core idea”, and at almost every step mixed in with the four vectors through which a brand makes itself tangible. You could add the visual brand as an added layer over the graph above, as a way to visualize its place as the second – or maybe, rather, sixth – element of a brand. Think about the colors and/or maybe a logo used in the design of a Product; the brick-and-mortar storefront or conversely the website (Environment); the taglines or slogans — but also colors, layouts, etc.) used consistently in e-mails or campaigns (Communication), and your company logo on the shirt of the customer service representative who just made your customer ‘s day (Behavior). The main goal is to keep finding ways to communicate the core idea of the brand in everything you do. And conversely, to check everything you do with the core idea of your company. I find that these two core elements and four vectors – for a total of six brand elements - make it infinitely easier to think and talk about brand and brand identity, because they help us do it in a structured way. They can also be used as a basis for brand strategy and they are the six elements that you need to at least think about when thinking about creating and managing a successful brand. How to manage a brand successfully Brand management is undoubtedly handled best with a strategic long-term plan, which would be an entire article – if not an entire book - in and of itself. In this article, we focused on the elements that are at the core of brand identity and that should be considered when talking or thinking about brand management. How To Hit a Brand Management  Home Run: 6 Key Elements

It’s a rainy Sunday afternoon, and my friend, Alice, and I are playing “Where’s Waldo.”* This page is a particularly challenging one, and we’ve been looking for nearly twenty minutes.  I’m about ready to give up, when- finally- I spot Waldo, and I yell out, “I got him!” Note from the author: I am a lead software engineer at Fluree .This blog post  created by Lillian Podl og was originally posted on the Fluree blog here . I raise my finger, and I’m about to point to Waldo’s location, but she stops me, exclaiming, “Wait, wait, wait! Wait just one second! I’ve put so much work into finding Waldo, and I don’t want you to ruin it for me.” “Hmm…” I say. “If only there was a way for me to prove to you that I know where Waldo is without revealing his location.” “Here, I have an idea,” Alice says. “I’ll make a photocopy of this page in the book, and you can cut Waldo out of the photocopy and show him to me. That way, I know for sure that you know where Waldo is, AND I still won’t know where he is.” As you might have guessed by the title of this blog, the scenario I’ve described is a classic example of a real-life zero knowledge proof. In this story (which **definitely** happened in real life), There are many types and potential applications of zero-knowledge proofs, including nuclear disarmament (yes, really) and verified anonymous voting. In this example project, I’ve focused on how using Fluree in conjunction with zero-knowledge proofs can begin to tackle the challenge of traceable fishing. Before we begin, I need to make the disclaimer that I am, by no means, an expert in zero-knowledge proofs. I welcome and encourage comments, suggestions, corrections, criticisms, and more in the comments. This project is an exploration of the possibility of using zero-knowledge proofs with . I am proving that I possess a piece of information (Waldo’s location), while at the same time not revealing that information. Fluree With relying on fish as their main source of protein, oceans are a critical food source. Given the importance of marine life to human nourishment, efforts have been made to regulate fishing locations, methods, and quantity. These regulation attempts are sometimes at odds with the desires of fishers who, among other concerns, are not too keen to reveal their fishing locations. This is where zero-knowledge proofs can come in.  Zero-knowledge proofs can allow a fisher to prove that they are, for example, fishing within an allowed area, without exposing the exact location. To follow along with this example, you can download the repository. If video is more your speed, you can also check out this project’s accompanying video above or on youtube. three billion people fluree/legal-fishing Iden3’s Circom and SnarkJS In this project, I use two Javascript libraries, both published by Iden3, to handle my zero-knowledge proofs. I use to write and compile an arithmetic circuit (more on this in a second). I then use this circuit in conjunction with the library to implement a zero-knowledge proof. (For those who are interested, the specific type of zero-knowledge proof we use here is called a zkSNARK, or zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive argument of knowledge, using the 8points protocol). The intuition behind this type of zero-knowledge proof is not as simple as the “Where’s Waldo” example, but it operates in a similar way. We first build a very specific type of electrical circuit that is only satisfied by inputs that match certain restrictions. circom snarkjs Using circom, we’ll create a representation of a circuit, but let’s imagine for a second that it’s a real-world circuit. You and I sit down, and we build an electrical circuit with 5 switches on one side. The circuit has a light bulb that will always light up if exactly 3 of the switches are on- it doesn’t matter which three. I leave the room, and you flip any three of the switches that you want. You then cover up the switches with a cardboard box so that no one can see them. I walk into the room, see the light bulb is shining, and I know that the circuit is complete. I know that your input (which switches you turned on) fit our criteria (exactly 3 switches turned on), but I won’t know exactly what your input was. This type of zero-knowledge proof is analogous to what we are mathematically accomplishing using circom and snarkjs. We won’t delve into the math here, but hopefully this has given you some intuition. InRange.circom The specific type of circuit we are creating is an arithmetic circuit, which is a circuit that can perform some arithmetic operations. If you are following along with the GitHub repository, the circuit is` `. src/circuits/InRange.circom Our circuit will take two public inputs: – an array of two numbers representing the min and max latitudes of the legal fishing range (must be positive numbers). latitudeRange – an array of two numbers representing the min and max longitudes of the legal fishing range (must be positive numbers). longitudeRange These two inputs will be visible to the public. This circuit will also take a private input: – an array of two numbers within the legal range. fishingLocation The circuit will output a 0 (if the circuit is not satisfied) or a 1 (if it is). To compile the circuit, you’ll need to have circom installed: npm install -g circom Then you’ll need compile the circuit: circom InRange.circom -o InRange.json This will take InRange.circom as an input an output InRange.json in the same directory. Setup Now, we need to setup the circuit. In order to do this, we’ll need to have snarkjs installed. npm install -g snarkjs And then we can issue: snarkjs setup -c InRange.json This will create two files, and . As the names suggest, the proving key is the key you’ll need to prove that your input (your location) is valid. The verification key is the key you’ll need to verify anyone else’s proofs. When we set up our Fluree ledger, we’ll be putting both the proving and verification key (as well as the circuit) on the ledger. proving_key.json verification_key.json Note – This type of zero-knowledge proof requires a trusted setup. The process of generating these keys will also create some toxic data that must be deleted. Participants need to trust that the toxic data was deleted. It is important to note that this toxic data would allow an untrustworthy participant to create a fake proof using inputs that don’t match the constraints. The toxic data would NOT allow a user to discover someone else’s secret location. But this toxic data is only created once, and there are methods to minimize the risk. For example, a multi-party trusted setup creates a situation where a number of participants come together to generate the proving and verification keys, and each of them possess a piece of toxic data. In a setup like this, the only way to create a fake proof would be if every single party was untrustworthy, and they all kept their toxic data and then colluded by bringing their toxic data together (hopefully an unlikely occurrence!). Calculating a Witness Before we can create a proof, we need to calculate all the signals in the circuit (including all the intermediate inputs) that match the circuit’s constraints. In order to do this, we’ll need to create an input.json, which has all of our inputs (including the private inputs). Neither the inputs.json, nor the witness.json files will be shared with anyone, but we do need to calculate them first. Our input file needs to be a map, where the keys are the names of all of the circuit’s inputs, and the values are our specific inputs. For example: { : [ , ], : [ , ], : [ , ]
} "latitudeRange" 20 21 "longitudeRange" 176 190 "fishingLocation" 20 180 We can then calculate the witness, which will generate the witness.json file. snarkjs calculatewitness -c InRange.json Create the Proof Now, we have all of the pieces to create the proof: snarkjs proof This command uses the proving key and the signals in witness.json to generate a proof.json (the actual proof) and public.json, which is a subset of your witness.json containing only your public inputs and the outputs. Verify the Proof You can now give any other party your verification_key.json, proof.json, and public.json, and they can verify that you put in an input that matched the constraints (a location within the legal range). Connecting this with Fluree In the repo, we not only have an example circuit with example keys and inputs, but we also have a small demo React app that makes it easy to connect this zero-knowledge proof to a Fluree instance. To get this running, you’ll need to: fluree/legal-fishing Download a fresh instance of Fluree. I used version . 0.11.5 Run Fluree (`./fluree_start.sh`). Fluree needs to be running on port 8080. This is the default port, so if you didn’t change any of the settings for version 0.11.5, everything will be all set for you. Create a database called `legal/fishing`. Issue a transaction to create the schema. You can find this transaction in ` `. seed/schema.json Issue a transaction to upload the circuit, verification key, and proving key to Fluree. You can generate and upload your own, or you can use the example in ` `. If uploading your own, be very careful to copy the keys and circuits exactly, otherwise the proof and verification won’t work. seed/seed/json Now, you can run `npm install` and `npm start` to start up the light-weight React app, which integrates Fluree with the zero-knowledge proofs. You can use the app to generate a proof and submit the proof and public signals to the Fluree ledger. You can also click on the Verify Proofs pages to see all the proofs that have been submitted to this ledger. You can click on “Verify Proof” to verify any given proof. Note that verifying a proof takes a little while, so expect to wait 10 – 20 seconds before a green “Verified!” alert comes up. For a full tour of the application, as well as a visual walk-through of getting the circuit and app setup, check out this project’s accompanying . video This zero-knowledge proof project allows you to create zero-knowledge proofs asserting that a given fishing location is within a legal range. By uploading the circuit, proving key, and verification key to Fluree, all the members of a network can see the keys and ensure the keys haven’t been changed or tampered with over time. By uploading the proofs to Fluree, we ensure there is a record of who submitted every proof, when they submitted, and whether and how they changed that proof. In addition, because the verification key is also on the ledger, any participant can independently verify any and every proof as many times as they want. Additional Considerations This small project is only a tiny part of the puzzle needed to ensure seafood traceability. For starters, this example only deals with a single rectangular-shaped area. A real-life project would, of course, be much more complicated than this. In the case of zero-knowledge proofs, verifying and creating proofs can be time-intensive, so implementing a real-world project would require careful consideration of timing. There are zero-knowledge proofs that specifically are optimized for range-proofs, which might be a better fit for this example. This could be an area of future exploration for us. Additionally, even if the proof itself took the full scope of real-world restrictions into account, a fisher’s location at the time of catch would have to be reported by a source that is reliable. For example, we might want a piece of hardware that is sufficiently tamper-proof reporting a fisher’s location, rather than, say, the fisher’s word. We would also need a reliable way to correlate a GPS location to a particular catch. For hardware, considerations of cost, hassle to the fishers, and tamper-proofness would all have to be weighed. A final area to consider is public knowledge and trust of zero-knowledge proofs. Even if mathematically, we can show that a zero-knowledge proof does not reveal a fisher’s location, the fisher would have to trust the organization implementing this system. The fisher would first have to trust that their location is not hidden somewhere in the proof they are uploading to the database. The proof is a large, JSON object that could conceivably hide information. The fisher would also have to trust that the hardware they are using to report their location is not sending it out through some backdoor. These are assuredly not insurmountable concerns, but they should be considered as food-for-thought. Research, implementation, and public understanding of zero-knowledge proofs have really grown in the past few years due to projects like , so this is definitely an area to look out for! Using Zero-Knowledge Proofs to Prove Legal Fishing Ranges with Fluree [A Step by Step Guide]

If you read my previous post, you’re probably wondering “Is this guy still building that awesome Wordpress landing page builder?” Yes!! He is. I don’t have any excuse for not writing this blog post earlier, but I guess we all have those moments when we prefer to work on something else or watch football games from the World Cup. The above thing reinforced the following statement: You have to get out of your comfort zone to achieve things. What did I do for the past 2 months? Did I achieve anything that I said in my last story? For those of you who do not know, in my last post, I said the following thing: The next things that I want to work on are to create a lead magnet on the blog, start a Youtube channel and an autoresponder. If you want to read my previous post go . here Did I do any of this things? Unfortunately, I didn’t. Again, I do not have any excuse, but time is so short when you have a full-time job. I usually work 3–4 more hours every day after work, plus Saturdays and Sundays. “The bad thing” that happened in June and July was the World Cup. I love football, and I’ve watched almost all the games ( except the ones that were playing when I was at my full-time job ) This thing made my productivity low. Maybe half or less than I usually work. So what did I do in the past 2 months? First thing I learned, in the past few weeks, is that it’s easy to lose focus and stay motivated. During the summer you have all kind of distractions. I’m somehow lucky because I’m a kind of a lonely wolf in London. I’m not saying it as a bad thing. It’s strange, but I like it. I guess you need to be a bit lonely to be able to build something, but you also need a lot of support from your close friends, family or even people that you meet online. Now let’s speak about the first thing that I did since my last blog post. I sent an email to my list of almost 150 subscribers. The subject was “Need your help”, and in the email, I asked why they subscribed and how do they think that Netcrumb will help them. I didn’t get a lot of responses. I think 5% responded, but I was not disappointed. The reason why I sent this email is that I don’t have an autoresponder ( which is a bad thing and I will sort it out soon ) What did the people say? Mostly positive things. Their expectations were matching what Netcrumb will be. Maybe not from version A, but many of the things they said are on the roadmap. The first reply was from Zac from Aweber and to whom I said that I would integrate it, but not in the first version of the product. Another guy was a copywriter who had excellent points. He suggested to try and help people with their text, once they try to build their Wordpress landing page on Netcrumb. ( Thanks Wally ) I wish more people responded, but I hope to get more feedback once I launch an MVP that people will be able to see and use. If I regret one thing before starting Netcrumb is that I didn’t build an audience first. In 2016 I started a website that was helping people with different Wordpress issues they had. It never got more than 1000 users per month, I never tried to get an email from the visitors, and I did not pay a lot of attention to it. It was on the same domain name ( netcrumb.com), but I deleted everything from it. It doesn’t matter anymore for me with Netcrumb, but if you have anything in mind, try to build an audience first, by helping people with different things related to your idea. Designs All the designs for Netcrumb are ready. Yuhuuu!!! You will be able to create landing pages for web apps, mobile apps, personal and digital agencies. Let me share with you some hero designs: All the hero sections will be different based on your category selections. The below header will be part of the SaaS or Web Apps category. Once you get to the last step, you will be able to add parts for About Us, Services, Portfolio, FAQ, Contact, Testimonials, Team, Features, Pricing, Clients, CTA and Checklist. You can see below some of the sections designs: Based on this designs the builder it’s almost ready, but still needs some tweaks and bug fixes. After these things get fixed, the next step will be to pack the landing page, created by the user, in a Wordpress theme. I have to say that the agency I’m working with are doing a great job, even if the project is delayed by one month already and I think it will take another 1–2 months to finish it. I knew from the beginning that their estimation of 3 months to build Netcrumb is too optimistic. Learning Bootstrap For the people that do not know what Bootstrap is: Bootstrap is a framework that can help you to create responsive websites easier. Why I’m learning it? I’m creating a new marketing landing page for . netcrumb.com At this moment, Netcrumb’s marketing landing page it’s on CSS and HTML ( Bootstrap ), and for the blog page, I’m using a free Wordpress theme. I need to have the whole website in a Wordpress theme because it will help with search engine optimisation, and the site will look more pro. After I learn Bootstrap, I have some desire to look a bit into VUE JS, but I do not know if I will have time to learn and use it. No vacation this summer I decided not to have any holiday this summer. I will go for two days at the end of August, for my birthday, in Paris, but I can’t call this a holiday. It might also be related to the fact that I had a lot of trips to Romania this year, to see my girlfriend and my family. Of course, I would love to drink a beer on a beach in Greece or Spain, but I consider that I have a lot of other priorities at this moment. Ahrefs Membership I’ve always loved Ahrefs, and I think that their tool brings a lot of value if you want to create a content marketing strategy. The only downside is that I considered their lower tier of $99 per month too expensive. In June I’ve signed up for their Lite membership, and I did some research for Netcrumb. I’ve cancelled the membership for the moment, but I will renew once I start doing content marketing, Youtube and/or blog posts. Five days before the expiration date I wanted to help other people, as I had a lot of credits left, and I posted on Indie Hackers and also on some Facebook groups. I did some websites and keywords research, and I’ve received quite a lot of “thank you”. Helping other people and not expecting anything back can build relationships and it is amazing! The Mom Test Book It is a book which someone recommended in a thread, in the Indie Hackers community. It has around 150 pages and has a LOT of value. I won’t get into details, but the main idea of the book is that when we want to create some start-up ( web app, mobile app etc.), we ask the wrong questions to the people, including our friends and family. Instead of asking questions that will bring value to our research, we’re asking questions in a way that we’re making the other person to give false feedback. For example, if you go and ask your mother. “Mom, would you buy this recipe app that I want to make for $30 per year?” She will always say yes, but this doesn’t give you any valuable information. Instead, you have to ask her when was the last time she used a recipe app and if she used, which things that app was missing and so on. I recommend this book for an evening read. On Amazon, it has both paperback and Kindle edition. Mental Health I was not sure if I wanted to add this here, but then I thought that it’s part of my journey. I have to share it, so people know what to expect when they start building their own business. You probably know that everything in this life has ups and downs. When you start working on your own thing a lot of things flow through your mind. Will it work? Does it have a lot of features? Will people pay for it? Will I be able to make a living out of it? What will the customers say? All these questions will make you forget why you started everything. These thoughts will drag you down and will make you lose motivation and focus. I had them as well in the last two months, but how did I solve them? I don’t think I did. I know it’s terrible, but I don’t believe that I have a solution at this point. I just let them pass by forcing myself into working, even if it means my full-time job or Netcrumb. It’s not the right approach, but if you have any suggestions drop me a message. I might write a longer blog post about this thing. I know it is a common thing among other entrepreneurs. Expenses This is the part that all of you expect. In June and July, I had the following expenses. AWS ( Amazon Web Services ) — $24 for June and $52 for July I have to admit that I’m surprised that I’m already paying for AWS even if I have 0 users. I’m paying for the Relational Database Service where they charge hourly, but I paid $19 more in July for Elastic Compute Cloud. For me, Amazon Web Services seems so complicated. A lot of names and a lot of information. From a UX perspective, I think that it is a mess. Ahrefs — $118 The LITE membership is just $99, but because I’m from the EU, they require to pay VAT. Agency — £3568 This is the third part that I paid, and I have one more left which I will pay at the end of the project. Indie Hackers Meeting On June 27th there was an Indie Hackers meeting in London. For those of you who are not part of the Indie Hackers community, I indeed suggest joining. The meeting was held in Stripe’s London office which is actually 10 minutes walk from where I work. The meeting was done through meetup.com, and I thought that I will not be able to attend it as when I registered I was the 25th person on the waiting list. Surprisingly, on 27th I received an email that said that I will be able to attend it. Went there and I think I was the third person to arrive. I was impressed with Stripe’s office which had a bar in the middle. We received free pizza and drinks ( beer and wine ), and at 7 two talks started. I’m really happy with the progress, even though three weeks ago I started to panic and I thought that the development is not going in the right direction. It was one of those moments when you forget why you started and what’s the purpose of what you’re building. You start questioning every decision, but I’m happy now that those bad feelings went away. A start-up is a long journey and not a sprint. Being mentally strong it is very important, but in the end what matters is to succeed and help as many people as possible with your creation.
