The current software development ecosystem moves fast and it seems older frameworks like Django or Rails becoming absolute, but it is a huge underestimation! Django is one of the unique frameworks that I like to use - first of all because it contains everything in it, with just a few simple configurations. Let’s say you want to build a simple admin panel based on an existing DB and already predefined models. Even if project written in Node.js or with Go, I always use Django to spin up a basic Admin panel, because there is no UI coding needed, just a simple DB and python configurations. On the other hand Django gives a lot of flexibility and simplicity in making API endpoints, especially when Django Graphene came out, we just made our full API with Django and GraphQL at . Generally python ecosystem has adopted Virtualenv to run python applications like when you want to have multiple python versions or multiple versions of a specific library, you had to run it under different virtual environments. With Docker things got a little bit easier, because Docker itself is a completely different environment and file system with all its libraries, and because of that, the Python ecosystem was one of the first adopters of containerized applications. Running Django inside Docker is real deal breaker when it comes to real DevOps deployments or ease of resource management. So like it or not running Django inside Docker container is way better then trying to configure it with Virtualenv and managing code transfer separately. Getting Started Django application itself is just a well-structured python file with a single entry point. ElasticSearch is open source search and analytics engine generally used in applications which have complex search features. In this tutorial, we are going to consider a scenario where we wish to add ElasticSearch to our legacy application as a S . Say suppose we have a legacy application which uses MySQL database and now we have a requirement where we need to have a heavy search and we have decided to move to ElasticSearch. My idea here would still stick to Relational Databases as a and use ElasticSearch as a for the requirements where we need to have the heavy search. econdary Data Source Primary Data Store Secondary Data Store So our Relational Databases would be a single source of truth and we could always flatten the Tables and Index that data to ElasticSearch. And to perform heavy search , we will query ElasticSearch and use Relational Databases as is for usual application-db transactions. So now the questions that might have arisen in our mind are, How will I migrate all my data from a structured data source (MySQL) to a non-structured data source (Elastic Search)? Can this migration be done without any downtime? How will I keep both data source in sync? One of the solutions to this is using Logstash input plugin. Replication of data from Relational database to ElasticSearch using Logstash Logstash is a plugin-based data collection and processing engine. It comes with a wide range of plugins that makes it possible to easily configure it to collect, process and forward data in many different architectures. Processing is organized into one or more pipelines. In each pipeline, one or more receive or collect data that is then placed on an internal queue. This is by default small and held in memory, but can be configured to be in order to improve reliability and resiliency. input plugins larger and persisted on disk Processing threads read data from the queue in micro-batches and process these through any configured in sequence. Logstash out-of-the-box comes with a large number of plugins targeting specific types of processing, and this is how data is parsed, processed and enriched. filter plugins Once the data has been processed, the processing threads send the data to the appropriate output plugins, which are responsible for formatting and sending data onwards, e.g. to Elasticsearch. But really Go is not giving any chances to survive in enterprise world… If you got the idea of this quote, then you probably tried or just looked around . Which is I think easiest programming language that can fit in any kind of application development. Yes! you read that right, for me Go is easier to learn than even JavaScript. I think this is the main reason why Go language become so match popular within a few years. Go programming language So What We Had Before Using Go? mainly dashboard and API based web application with some analytical stuff. That’s the main reason why we started thinking about merging into single project because they have a lot of things that are similar but codebase is duplicated over multiple programming languages and technologies. But it turns out that we need to work a lot to customize Django’s API services, especially with custom JSON responses. API Service and Backend After 1 month of building API service with Django, I felt that Django is great until you building something very usual, but when you want more performance and some custom modules things getting more and more complicated. Why Go? As I told earlier is the most easiest languages that I’ve ever seen and used. But it was only the first attraction for me. Go Language Here is the main 5 reasons why we choose Go over Python Django #1 It Compiles Into Single Binary Golang built as a compiled language and Google developers did great job with it. Using it actually combining all dependency libraries and modules into one single binary file based on OS type and architecture. Which means if you are compiling your backend application on your laptop with Linux X86 CPU you can just upload compiled binary into server and it will work, without installing any dependencies there! static linking #2 Static Type System Type system is really important for large scale applications. Python is great and fun language but sometimes you are just getting unusual exceptions because trying to use variable as an integer but it turning out that it’s a string. # Django will crash process because of thisdef some_view(request):user_id = request.POST.get('id', 0)# If this post request has "id" parameter then# user_id would be a string,# but you really thinking it is integerUser.objects.get(id=user_id) Go will let you know about this issue during compile time as a compiler error. This is where you winning time for this kind of stupid issues. #3 Performance!! This could be surprising but in most of the application cases Go is faster than Python (2 and 3). Here is the results of , which are unfair, it depends on application type and usecase. Benchmarking Game For our case Go performed better because of his concurrency model and CPU scalability. Whenever we need to process some internal request we are doing it with separate Goroutine, which are 10x cheaper in resources than Python Threads. So we saved a lot of resources (Memory, CPU) because of the built in language features. #4 You Don’t Need Web Framework For Go This is the most awesome thing about programming language. Go language creators and the community have built in so many tools natively supported by language core, that in most of the cases you really don’t need any 3rd party library. For example it has built in language natively and you can build very complex API services without even thinking about finding library on Github! http, json, html templating But of course there is a lot of libraries and frameworks built for Go and making web applications with Go, but I’ll recommend build your web application or API service without any 3rd party library, because in most cases they are not making your life easier than using native packages. #5 Great IDE support and debugging IDE support is one of the most important things when you are trying to switch your programming language. Comfortable IDE in average can save up to 80% of your coding time. I found which has support also for (Webstorm, PHPStorm, etc…). That plugin is giving everything that you need for project development with the power of JetBrains IDEA you can really boost your development. Go Plugin For JetBrains IDEA Based on our code base statistics, after rewriting all projects to Go we got 64% less code than we had earlier. You really don’t need to debug code which doesn’t exists. Less code, less troubles! Conclusion Go gave us huge flexibility, single language for all usecases and for all of them it working very very well. We got about 30% more performance on our Backend and API services. And now we can handle logging real time, transfer it to database and make a streaming with Websocket from single or multiple services! This is awesome outcome from Go language features. It’s a pretty common opinion outside the crypto community that the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) as technology has absolutely no purpose. I disagree, even though a number of its current uses are, almost exclusively, different versions of tricking the uninformed into throwing lots of money into technology they don’t understand. However, they do present a clear path to monetization for artists, something I'll get into after delving into the technical details. For now, let's focus on two problems with NFTs as implemented today. The ownership problem Right now, the most common use is to demonstrate “ownership” of an image. However, “ownership" in this context doesn’t mean much because it doesn’t necessarily include the copyright or the license to use an image. It , but the legal details get complicated quickly. Storing legal contract details alongside the asset would be interesting, but could create a patchwork of different rights issues, as the NFT moves between different owners and different jurisdictions. could Given the above, it’s a little confusing as to what purchasing an NFT actually entitles an owner to. As someone who has a pretty thorough understanding of how this technology works, I also have no idea what -if anything- is captured by the ownership of an NFT. As far as I've seen, this question has been left intentionally unanswered by the purveyors of NFTs. The most charitable answer seems to be that it entitles the owner to a transaction on the blockchain, and the ability to transfer the token to someone else. That's it. I'd like to contrast this with the most obvious comparison, digital items in video games. If I purchase a card in Hearthstone or stash tab in Path of Exile, it's completely transparent that I'm purchasing an entry in a database that entitles my account to the usage of the item in-game. The item's usability is either temporary or tied to the lifetime of my account, which is tied to the lifetime of the game's servers. Putting that all together simply: I'm purchasing a license to use the digital item until either it expires or my account expires. While the sellers of NFTs may try to convince unsuspecting buyers that NFTs will last as long as there are participants in the underlying network, the lifetime of an NFT's may or may not be tied to the lifetime of the service it was minted from. That depends on the implementation of the NFT contract because there's nothing stopping the contract writer from including logic that requires the minting service or the contract owner to be functional. There's also nothing preventing services (or users) from minting brittle NFTs that rely on centralized infrastructure (as we'll see later). usability With all of that in mind, it seems that the only tangible and permanent benefit of purchasing an NFT today is a transaction on the blockchain with your wallet ID on it. No guarantee of usability in the future, no clear declaration of the lifetime of the token, either. Considering that the practical benefit of owning an NFT boils down to an entry in a ledger, it seems that the “non-fungible” part of “non-fungible token” is true in the sort of sense that my $20 bill is non-fungible relative to your $20 bill because mine is in my wallet and yours is in your wallet. However, according to NFT experts, the situation is slightly different. They might say that, in the same way that my wife isn't interchangeable with my neighbor's wife, one NFT is not interchangeable with another. Or are they? Let's explore. The authenticity problem According to the of an NFT, the answer to the above question must be no, but the we have today don't prevent creating multiple NFTs with the exact same data. Since the content is identical, we can't decide which one is authentic based on the token data itself. This implies that we need some kind of authority (organization, digital mechanism or etc.) to tell us which one is "real" and which one is a duplicate. On the other hand, if someone tried to swap out my wife with my neighbor's wife, both I and my neighbor would take issue because they are tangibly different. NFTs are not verifiably authentic based solely on their content. concept implementations The most quick-to-mind counterargument would be that one can verify an NFT’s contract details; however, the same issues with NFT authenticity bubble up to the contract itself. There isn't anything preventing a bad actor from deploying a visibly identical contract and generating counterfeit NFTs. There are possibilities for addressing this kind of issue, but none of the NFT contracts deployed today seem to do so, and migrating existing NFTs into a new, more secure contract would require even more trust than the current system does. The technologies in place today just don't have the mechanisms baked in to provide self-evident authenticity. This is a notoriously difficult problem to solve, and interested readers may delve into other projects. To draw a real-world comparison, we can imagine something like counterfeit trading cards. A poor counterfeit might be clearly inauthentic, but a perfect counterfeit might require some authority (like the manufacturer) to prove or disprove authenticity (by establishing a chain of trust from the factory line to the end-user). This is sometimes hinted at with ideas like difficult to replicate, tamper-evident, sealed packaging. The idea is that only the manufacturer has the specific packaging, so a product sealed in such packaging must be from the legit manufacturer. Returning to the digital goods example from above, the only way to receive something like a Hearthstone card is to purchase it in-game. The existence of the item as part of my in-game collection is akin to a seal of authenticity from the manufacturer. Short of glitches or hacks, the only way to obtain the card is to purchase it from the manufacturer, and it's up to them to maintain the integrity of the system. A recent example would be , where one of the game's most expensive items was mistakenly placed by developers where anyone could grab as many copies as they wanted. This resulted in a rollback of the game's servers to a state before the glitch occurred, returning the guarantee of the authenticity of the item. This draws an interesting parallel to , which effectively rolled back a multi-million dollar set of transactions by a bad actor who had found issues with a contract deployed on the network. Old School Runescape's Twisted Bow glitch the Ethereum hard fork Coming back to the point, the authenticity of a given object (physical or digital) has to be established either by the content of said object or by an authority over the authenticity of the object. A hash of some data is authentic by its content (we can verify the hash) while a collectible card may require an authority to verify it. By their nature, NFTs require an authority that is unfulfilled by marketplaces and exchanges. What is an actual NFT? } If you've never seen an NFT before, this may be a little underwhelming. It's literally just a JSON file with an entry on a blockchain pointing to it. It has an image field with a fragile IPFS gateway link and some metadata. Most of the "functionality" of an NFT (trading and ownership establishment) is implemented in the minting contract and not the token itself. As an aside, this is a sad implementation of an NFT because the JSON file -the literal NFT- being referenced isn't actually the IPFS address of the file, it's a link to Pixura's proprietary gateway. This means that this NFT will no longer function correctly if Pixura ever decides to take its gateway offline. This is opposed to providing an IPFS protocol link, which will work as long as the file is pinned to IPFS. Even worse, someone could hijack that gateway server and link to all sorts of awful stuff. This particular NFT would be durable if it used centralized storage! That seems opposed to the decentralized nature of blockchain technologies, but I'll leave the moral ponderings to the reader. more Looking at the above, the issue is clear. Because the transaction can never be changed, one can more easily identify this token from duplicates by keeping track of the original recipient. Modern artists have to jump through so many hoops to get paid, and anything from shilling sponsorships to farming ad revenue or selling "fans only" content is on the table. Most of these methods leverage the artist's reputation and audience engagement as the product being sold rather than the art itself. If you're not interested in being used as a weapon in the psychological warfare being carried out on consumers, your options are slim. Not nothing, but certainly slim. Selling NFTs in a marketplace with an (almost) direct-to-consumer business model cuts out a lot of the typical garbage that an artist may have to deal with in more direct bartering situations. It also goes a long way in connecting artists to people who want to purchase art, which is invaluable and a significant improvement over the current strategy of trying to cultivate a Twitter following and linking to commission forms or patreons. NFTs as "status symbols" or tokens of proof of supporting a favorite artist seems like a pretty cool idea, and there's definitely an untapped business opportunity in creating a more supporting-the-artist-centric model of an NFT marketplace. Given the ease of deploying contracts and websites, this could be a couple of months’ worth of weekends for a pair of competent developers! As a final concrete example, when I decided to get an avatar commissioned for a personal brand, I spent hours digging around on Reddit and Twitter looking for artists before I found . The process for getting work done involved a couple of days worth of back and forth negotiating usage rights, pricing, and drafts. Joghs was easy to work with, so this process was relatively painless but the only records we have of the rights negotiation are my personal records, a private Discord conversation, and (hopefully) Joghs’ personal records: there’s no public record of what rights I purchased. Moderators at Big Tech are the unsung heroes of our social media and internet experience today. The cleaners of the interwebz if you will. Evidence of their work stays obscured from us. It is only when unintended slip ups occur that the consequences spill over onto the internet and chaos ensues. During the tragic terrorist attacks on Christchurch mosques back in 2019, the attacker was live streaming as he went about his killing spree. While the massacre was ongoing and many hours afterwards, those heinous videos kept on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube and other social media. Moderators on those platforms struggled to keep up. It became a game of cat and mouse with normal users scrambling to report posts that showed up so that moderators could review and remove them quickly. surfacing In absence of adequate moderation, you or your child's YouTube feed could look like this (Source: Reference #1) It goes without saying that moderators go through disturbing experiences like these day in and day out so that we don’t have to. Their work ensures that vile content stays off the internet. Stuff that often involves unspeakable human cruelty – from violent extremism, to murder, to animal torture, to child abuse, to rape, to self-harm, to hate speech, to terrorist propaganda and so on. Sometimes, it’s intentional shock material like or graphic pornography. At other times, it’s straight-up illegal affairs such as contraband solicitation. A moderator interviewed by VICE last year estimates 5-10% ( ) of what they see through the course of their work is potentially traumatizing. Media and Tech companies, especially those that allow user-generated media, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Telegram etc. have community standards that are usually based on common sense principles and statutory law. In order to ensure that content posted on their platforms follow the guidelines, these companies employ AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning) algorithms to automatically filter out objectionable matter. Things that slip through the cracks go over to a moderator (or mod) queue for manual review. When a user reports anything, it goes through an automatic or manual review process A mod’s designation can vary from community mod to to content manager to legal removals associate ( ) etc. They can operate proactively if they detect questionable content or reactively in response to a report by a user. Based on their assessment, they can choose to keep, remove or escalate the flagged material to higher-ups. Escalations happen for grey areas such as a political matter. A user can also be temporarily suspended or permanently banned from the platform based on their actions. But the psychological trauma from reviewing 2000 flagged photos/hour ( ) or 400 reported posts/day and the resulting stress of maintaining a high is the same for all. Actions have ranged from permanent bans to reporting the matter to the FBI. Each of those incidents have been distressing to say the least. Where do games come in all of this? Games and social media have always been intersectional in the form of MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) such as World of Warcraft, RuneScape, League of Legends, Clash of Clans, Eve Online or Battle Royale games like Fortnite, PUBG, Call of Duty, Apex Legends or even other online multiplayer games such as Among Us, Minecraft, Pokemon Go, FarmVille etc. Players interact with each other through in-game channels, Discord servers, chat rooms, Twitch etc. over text, audio, video and file transfers. MMROPG's like Old School RuneScape (OSRS) have tens of thousands of players interacting at any given moment ( ) Source So, game moderators (or gamemasters) face similar challenges as above when handling these forums. There are fewer instances of heinous content in gaming forums compared to social media, however. Instead, moderators here have to focus more on issues such as harassment, spam, trolling, cheating, bullying and ensuring that game rules are not broken. Because of the competitive nature of games, these channels of communication could turn heated leaving mods with their hands full and on their toes. Moderators may be by publishers/developers or from the community with high trust scores. employed volunteers What are the legal implications of moderation? In the 90s, the early days of the internet, there was a widespread mass scare that the web would lead to the spread of pornography and the resulting promiscuity would destroy the social fabric. Media reports would use all kinds of names such as calling the internet a “global computer hookup” ( ). The fear-mongering got to a stage where rationalists had to counter repeated calls for censoring the internet. Source: Reference #5 Scare stories like these created negative public perception about the internet during its infancy ( ) Source Subsequently, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act was ratified. This gave protection to platforms from the liability of publishers and the immunity to be able to remove bad content under the “Good Samaritan Clause”. This landmark law allowed the internet to grow to its size and form we see today. This is also what offers protection to moderators to go on about their jobs without fear of reprisal from affected parties. As games and social interactions move onto metaverses (more on that later), the same law will protect mods who “police” these realms to filter out bad behavior. However, there will be higher complexity of interactions in these settings, requiring new sets of guidelines for mods to operate. Just for an example, there could be instances of or stalking in the metaverse which require a moderator to step in and take corrective action. Without clear SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), moderators could remain second-guessing on taking a decisive measure. groping Wait, but what is a metaverse? Metaverse is a loosely held term that is usually meant to describe a shared immersive virtual realm that some envision as the future of the internet. This was largely a topic of science fiction until the advent of provably ownable digital assets in the form of cryptocurrencies and NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). The closest precursors of a true metaverse experience would be various game worlds. However, traditional gaming communities and studios have been wary of crypto and its associated technologies so far. As a result, crypto-native companies like Decentraland and The Sandbox have spawned metaverse-like worlds where users can own assets (both portable and non-portable). One thing that both sides might agree on is that “land” in the metaverse should be limitless. It is unclear whether Meta will incorporate the ethos of crypto (decentralized, permissionless, self-custody) or build a walled garden with its own architecture instead. Instances of game studios nixing ( ) existing digital context (assets, score, progress etc) continue to make the case for Web3 developments. However, as some critics have , it is important to keep in mind the vectors of bad behavior in a world where blockchains can play a large role. A metaverse mod will have a completely different experience from existing media i.e. text, images, video, sound, files etc. In a metaverse, in addition to the above media, there will be avatars mimicking human actions and using digital assets to extend those behaviors which will also need moderation. It will be as real as it gets to the meatspace police trying to maintain civility and keeping the bad apples in check. Moderators will have their work cut out in a new paradigm. Employers, on their part, will have to ensure that this work is not only suitably rewarded but the mental well-being of those involved is also taken care of. Social media has already given an idea of the toll it takes on mods. This new iteration of social experience should not fail them as they strive to uphold the sanctity of metaverses for the rest of us. Play-To-Earn (P2E) is a horrible model and it’s about time people stopped worshipping this false idea. As much as I’d love to earn money playing video games myself, this model that all of these blockchain games have adopted is . unrealistic and only puts a bad name on crypto Anyone who actually played a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) in their life understands why this concept just doesn’t work. Unfortunately, the mass majority creating and playing these games aren’t actual gamers, which is why they don’t understand. So, why can’t it work? After all the idea is pretty simple right? You play the game, earn whatever their native token or virtual material there is, sell it on an exchange and there’s your profit! On paper, this idea works completely fine—but only in the short term…. All these P2E games are doomed from the get-go. — Says who? Says the economy. AI and Robots Are Destined To Destroy The World Although the idea of dystopian AI is a worry for another day (in our real world), in video game universes it’s the problem of the present. Bots have been for years! And that’s excluding blockchain games, which heavily restrict real-world trading (RMT). Even there they manage to annihilate the experience. destroying virtual economies In the case of the P2E model, altogether. If a game’s existence is centered solely around the market then this is inevitable. no economy also means no world If you’ve played an MMO, you’ll recognize that P2E games utilize the “grindy” or “farming” aspect of video games. These refer to monotonous gathering tasks that are very simple but require lots of reactive effort and time as opposed to skill (almost like your average job :P). There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Might be a bit boring but hey… you do you. The major issue though, is that you as a . player will be easily replaced by bots You’ve seen them. On Twitter, Facebook, RuneScape, World of Warcraft, and basically any social community. The botting and AI technology is just too advanced to stop within virtual worlds. If multi-billion dollar companies like Twitter or Blizzard can’t handle it, what chances do you think a small indie developer has? These bots will quite literally take your job. And since you can’t stop them you cannot possibly outperform them. They do not sleep, they do not tire. They don’t require food or even a water break. They’re simply unstoppable and willing to work for a fraction of whatever you expected. How exactly do bots ruin the economy? An army of bots will do 2 things: Grind every commodity into worthlessness Drive away the majority of the player base Every market works on supply and demand and virtual games aren’t an exception. Bots will ‘farm‘ out all of the tokens, items, collectibles, and basically anything that’s worth something. This will create a massive disparity between supply and demand, which will of course force all of the different bot operators to compete with each other. They’ll constantly undercut each other’s prices and inevitably, drive the value into the ground. An average player will need to compensate each day for the plummeting prices with hours of extra “play time”, which will consequently feel more and more like work each day. In the end, it’ll be pure slavery with only the people at the top making money. Starting with the developers descending into different bot operators in an almost pyramid-like manner. Sound familiar? The Iceberg Goes Deeper At the end of the day, P2E games function similarly to malicious crypto miners. Not the kind that makes crypto for you but the kind that’s secretly injected into programs and you unknowingly download. These programs mine crypto and send it to someone else at your computing expense. This used to be what people were scared of and what they avoided. Nowadays though, not only are people downloading them willingly but they even help it in the guise of earning money themselves. Because that’s what P2E games are. Little programs that ultimately make money for the big fish with the illusion of looking out for the little guy. So is earning while gaming impossible? Of course not. Anything is possible. I’ve made quite a bit of money playing a wide range of games myself, including centralized titles. The blockchain does make it much easier too. However, the main point is that most of the focus in blockchain gaming is on P2E games, which is, as you might have guessed, a very faulty model in my opinion. Borderline predatory in most cases. Not all of them are obviously like that. Axie Infinity or even some of the upcoming ones like do seem like very genuine projects. But this “chasing the dragon” styled gameplay is just not it. The ability bar is now also fully functional, allowing the player to customize the placement of abilities, in addition to adding consumables such as food/equipment, giving the user full control of their placement and allowing the player the ability to alter the hot bar.
