In the context of the coronavirus crisis, many companies began experiencing cash flow shortfalls. In order to avoid the liquidity problem, which eventually may turn into a solvency issue, businesses were forced to cut their operational costs. As a result, , a record 20.5 million jobs were lost in April as the unemployment rate jumps to 14.7%. The April over-the-month decline is the largest in the history of the series and brought employment to its lowest level since January 2011 (the series dates back to 1939). Job losses in April were widespread, with the largest employment decline occurring in leisure and hospitality. only in the U.S. Employment in leisure and hospitality plummeted by 7.7 million, or 47 percent. Almost three-quarters of the decrease occurred in food services and drinking places (-5.5 million). Employment also fell in the arts, entertainment, and recreation industry (-1.3 million) and in the accommodation industry (-839,000). Employment fell in transportation and warehousing in April (-584,000). Transit and ground passenger transportation and air transportation lost 185,000 jobs and 141,000 jobs, respectively. Wholesale trade shed 363,000 jobs in April, largely reflecting losses in the durable and nondurable goods components. Employment in financial activities fell by 262,000 over the month, with the vast majority of the decline occurring in real estate and rental and leasing (-222,000). Like any other country, Australia has been hit also quite hard by the coronavirus pandemic. The Westpac/Melbourne indicator, which is designed to predict the direction of the economy, suggests that the economy is suffering one of the largest economic downturns since the Great Depression, falling 0.8% MoM in March 2020. Besides, the Reserve Bank of Australia is forecasting a contraction of 6% in 2020. In the case of the unemployment rate, this may soar to around 9% by the end of the year. To boost the weak economy, the RBA has decided to cut interest rates to a historic low of 0,25% back in March, at the same time launching a quantitative easing program. The Board has also announced that it will not increase the cash rate target until progress is being made towards full employment. The airline, without any doubt, is one of the most vulnerable industries now. From the beginning of the year, the Sydney Airport stock has fallen over 34%, whereas lost around 18%. It’s no secret that Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 elections was a blow to the ethos of Silicon Valley in more ways than one. Being in the middle of the Valley right now, I’m exposed to a lot of doom and gloom scenarios that is supposed to be the end of history as we know it. Socially, perhaps this may be true: nothing will ever be the same — at least, not in the way we talk about the issues to one another. If we take a calm, collected look at economic data and market trends, however, we may be able to look at the with a little more certainty. future A quick look at the S&P Index shows it dipping as it approaches election day, but overall the market seems largely indifferent to what had transpired during election week. (It’s climbing slightly upwards, in fact.) The tech industry may be feeling very pessimistic right now, but . Why does this disparity exist? the market as a whole seems to be fairly optimistic Given the volatility of Trump’s personality and claims, there is no guarantee that all or any of his economic policies will actually materialize into something workable or real. But there seems to be enough consistencies in his policy agenda that has Wall Street somewhat reassured, even as he insults them at every turn. For a second, let’s forget all about the fake-article controversy, media circus, angry rants, racism, and claims of the coming apocalypse for now. (It’s Thanksgiving, so maybe it’ll be good to get away from that stuff for a little while, anyway.) Let’s just simply look at how the market is reacting to Trump’s presidency in response to his policies related to economic development. His policies are: Lower taxes for corporations, including small business corps. Pro-business: Regulations across the board, including environmental ones are likely to be relaxed. Anti-Regulation: Stronger illegal immigration penalties, maintenance of existing legal immigration policies. Immigration: Increased infrastructure spending for federal and state projects. (Though this is promised by just about everyone, but never actually done.) Infrastructure: Foreign Trade: Protection for American jobs and interests, which may lead to increased tariffs. Save for a few crazy proposals (like making Mexico pay for it), if you look at enough of Trump’s policy proposals, they start to look like ones from a run-of-the-mill Republican candidate. This is the biggest divergence he has with the Democratic establishment, as well as the existing Republican establishment as well. (Bernie Sanders is Trump’s leftist equivalent in this regard, which also explains the hostility Sanders received during the primaries.) With one exception: Trump is in favor of economic protectionism of the American worker while adding heavy revisions to global trade policies like NAFTA and the TPP. From a purely economic perspective, the last point is what scares the Valley the most, because it has, for better or worse, been a major benefactor and profiteer of the forces of globalization for a while now. From manufacturing, labor, recruitment, customer-acquisitions, investment, social connections, off-shore practices — all the way to their saying of “changing the world”. The idea that the scope of their ideals will have to shift inward rather than outward poses a very real economic and existential threat. But now, more than ever, it’s important for tech companies to prepare for the next big pivot coming in the upcoming years. Regardless if Trump stays for 4 years, 8 years, or even less than 1, the sentiment of the public has changed irreversibly and people will be looking for something very different from than they did before. If we are to stay relevant in the upcoming election, the upcoming world, we will need to adapt to survive. Find Your Way to a New Job — Tradeschool or Community College?

In the current issue of I wrote an article laying out the case for how conscious companies can and do have an outsized economic and social justice impact on our cities. My essential premise is that companies and executives can play a significant role in curing some of the ills that plague many of our once and hopefully future great centers of industry and commerce, but in order to do so they must first recognize the of business is not simply to create value for shareholders, but to first create value for society. It seems that by default we continue to look to government to solve problems like income inequality, middle class job loss due to globalization, climate change and a slew of other issues being bandied about in this current political season, without also recognizing that many of these issues are inextricably tied to business and the way we choose to practice capitalism. Conscious Company Magazine purpose While we at once complain about how big business has left behind the middle class, is killing the planet and decimated local economies, at the same time we put the blame on government policy for “letting” these things happen, instead of asking critical questions of our entrepreneurs and executives so that they may step up and take responsibility. And why? Because we continue to think of business as a zero sum game of financial gain. In our collective zeitgeist we seem to not only adhere to the notion that business will do only that which is in it’s short term financial interest to do, we in fact hold this notion as so engrained and absolute that we never even consider that the theory we’ve adopted of capitalism might itself be part of the problem. It’s almost like we’re saying collectively, that given the opportunity to make greater profits and screw the rest of society, not only do we know that is what business will do, we hold that the only way to counteract this “basic rule of economics” is to have government impose laws to protect us. While the talking heads on CNBC (or the “comedy channel” as some of my friends on Wall Street have dubbed it for the lack of real insight and analysis) talk about the rules of the economy as if they were laws of physics, what is becoming increasingly clear is that humans are complex beings and our decision making processes are not simply based on rules of supply and demand, ROI and economic self interest. They are in fact, choices that we make about how we think the world works and more importantly how we think the world ought to work. We as a society have been conditioned to believe that, because business is only about financial returns for shareholders, the fact that people, executives, who have the power to make decisions to move jobs or not, to squeeze suppliers or not, to pay decent salaries salaries or not, simply can’t be held accountable for decisions that put shareholders before society. As the narrative goes: . But of course there is always a choice. In general, I believe, when we see executives making decisions pitting shareholders against other stakeholders (employees, customers, suppliers, communities, the environment) what we see isn’t math or physics at play but a lack of imagination on the part of management. If they were of the mind to find both societal and financial value the chance is that they indeed could do so. And, increasingly, if they do use that imagination and find new paths to value that increase the returns for all stakeholders, their customers, employees and communities will in fact increase their sales and help them create even more substantial financial returns. This is the paradox of : The less you focus myopically on money, and instead focus on creating societal value in the form of stakeholder interdependency, the more long-term financial value you end up creating for shareholders. If labor is cheaper in (name the foreign country), and the politicians set in place global trade deals that allow businesses to move jobs overseas, well of course American’s will lose jobs because CEOs have no choice but to move those jobs Conscious Capitalism I truly believe this is the type of mindset that can turn our most challenged cities into engines of economic development, individual prosperity and more joyful communities. If we are able to create 100s or even 1000s of new businesses that focus on society first, in cities like Baltimore, Cleveland, Columbus and Detroit, I believe we will see a shift in our ability to improve the lives of neighborhoods that have been so long forgotten and neglected. Working remotely is no longer just a dream. If you can afford a decent laptop and access to the internet, combine it with solid work skills and that gives you a pretty good chance to find a remote job. Challenges Unfortunately, we live in an imperfect world, which means that even great ideas such as having a remote job come with . Ethereum maintains the state of the EVM on the blockchain. All nodes process smart contracts to verify the integrity of the contracts and their outputs. This distributed network of computers for automatically carrying out contracts written in code. conveniently provides the security, reliability, and computing power necessary Ether — The Fuel that Powers the Network Within the Ethereum platform is a native currency called ether that is used to fuel the applications built on the platform. Just as a car requires gasoline to power its engine, applications built on the Ethereum platform require ether to obtain computational power. and is used by developers looking to develop and run applications inside Ethereum. Ether is like a vehicle for moving around on the Ethereum platform According to Ethereum, it can be used to “codify, decentralize, secure and trade just about anything.” Ethereum miners running the network nodes on their computers provide processing power to DApps and, in return, are compensated with ether. The Ethereum Virtual Machine This is one of the primary innovations of the Ethereum project and is a virtual machine designed to be run by all participants in a peer to peer network. It can read and write to a blockchain both executable code and data, verify digital signatures, and is able to run code in a Turing complete manner. It will only execute code when it receives a message verified by a digital signature, and the information stored on the blockchain tells it is appropriate to do so. Consensus Think of a normal centralized organization. All the decisions are taken by the leader or a board of decision makers. This isn’t possible in a blockchain because a blockchain has no “leader”. For the blockchain to make decisions, they need to come to a consensus in another way. In simple terms, consensus is a dynamic way of reaching agreement in a group. One of the central problems when it came to reaching a consensus is called the Without going into too much depth this can be summarized by describing generals in a “Byzantine Army” who want to attack a city and must agree on a concerted strategy to avoid catastrophic failure — when some of the Generals are unreliable. “ Byzantine Generals Problem ”. It can ensure that their army can actually attack as a unit despite these setbacks. A consensus mechanism can solve the Byzantine Generals problem. For example suppose the army on the left want to send a message called “attack at dawn” to the army on the right, they could use the following steps. (number only used once) to the original text. The nonce can be any random hexadecimal value. First, they append a “nonce” After that, to get a result. Suppose the armies have decided to only share messages which, on hashing, gives a result which starts with 6 zeroes. they hash the text appended with a nonce If the hash conditions are satisfied, they will . If not, then they will keep on changing the value of the nonce randomly until they get the desired result. This action is extremely tedious and time consuming and takes a lot of computation power. send the messenger with the hash of the message If the messenger does get caught by the city and the message is tampered with, according to hash function properties, the hash itself will be drastically changed.
