CONCLUSION In this paper, we proposed an anonymous yet accountable contract wallet system based on account abstraction and accountable ring signatures. The proposed system is implemented using Solidity for zkSync. Moreover, we discussed potential of the proposed system, e.g., medical information sharing and asset management. Since the current implementation results using Solidity show the required costs are expensive, our result here might be regarded as somewhat conceptual. However, to the best of our knowledge, no previous implementation result is known that confirms the cost to run an accountable ring signature scheme in Solidity to date, and we believe that our result can be seen as an important stepping stone to provide anonymity and accountability simultaneously in blockchain systems. Investigating other applications of the proposed system will be left to future work. The underlying account ring signature scheme does not provide post-quantum security due to the discrete logarithm-based construction. Thus, it is difficult to accept the current construction as a platform to manage large amounts of assets due to the progress of quantum computing. Because a post-quantum accountable ring signature scheme has been proposed in [7], it would be interesting to employ the scheme, precisely, how to implement it using Solidity is left to future work. The trend is spreading fast and many manufacturers already announced new 2018 models with edge-to-edge screens. For example with Android P devices like Essential Phone, OnePlus 6, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21, LG G7, Huawei P20 or Asus Zenfone 5. Similar to the iPhone X, Apple’s new iPad Pro model, the iPad X, will also include a notch and feature Face ID. “ ” How hard can it be to support the notch — maybe one or two days to optimize existing apps for it? In addition to the rounded edges, there is a main pain point for mobile app developers: the notch. Instead of a clear rectangular frame, app developers now face arbitrary shaped screens. Also, hardware buttons at the front no longer exist. They got replaced by on-screen buttons and gestures provided by the OS. The following sections describe how to create adaptive layouts to handle those challenges for both iOS & Android. While this post uses examples for iPhone X, the same concepts and suggested solutions also apply for other devices & platforms with similar screens, like upcoming Android P devices. Bigger Screen Size and Safe Area of iPhone X For the iPhone X, the new screen holds two major factors to account for in your mobile app: The screen is bigger in general, so there’s more space your app can use. Your app content should not cover areas with a notch or native on-screen buttons. Otherwise, the elements you place at these parts of the screen are not accessible. To support different device models and screens, most apps use a responsive layout. This means that the pages use the full height and width to show as much content as possible. This is a good thing. But if the notch and reserved areas are not taken into consideration, some parts of your app are covered or inaccessible. In the example screenshots shown above for the iPhone X, the notch covers the top navigation bar in portrait mode and your page content, the list item text, in landscape mode. For both orientations, the area for the home swipe gesture overlays your app at the bottom. Also note that the new screen comes with rounded corners. To solve this problem, your app needs to consider the of the screen. It is the part of your app, which won’t be covered by the notch or on-screen gestures. The required top and bottom screen insets determine the safe area in portrait mode: safe area For example, the navigation bar requires more padding at the top to be within the safe area. In landscape mode it looks a bit different. We then require margins to the left and right (for the rounded corners and the notch), as well as a small inset at the bottom (for the home swipe gesture): How Do Existing Apps Look on iPhone X? If you are worrying that your published app is already affected by the notch, you can relax. Only apps configured to target iPhone X will run full-screen. Your existing iOS apps will come with as shown on the right in this image, to not overlay areas with a notch or screen gestures: black borders The disadvantages are that the borders do not look good and the app does not match the style of other iPhone X apps — your user’s will realize this and your app will get a worse rating. The black border fallback is simply a backwards compatibility feature by Apple to not break anything. However, it also means some work for us app developers to support the new screen. How to Create iPhone X Apps with Xcode Enable iPhone X Support for Your App Unless your app enables support for iPhone X, it will show with black borders by default. This also means, that your . However, if you want to fully support iPhone X and let your app fill the whole screen, you need to add an additional launch image for the iPhone X resolution in Xcode: existing apps won’t be affected by the notch Add one image with 2436 x 1125 pixels for landscape mode, and one with 1125 x 2436 pixels if you want to support portrait. Position Your Content to the Safe Area Layout Guide Many iOS apps use a navigation bar at the top and a tab bar at the bottom. With iOS 7, Apple decided to add the and properties, which match the insets for these bars in the view. Developers can thus align their content to match these insets. topLayoutGuide bottomLayoutGuide For iPhone X, it is not enough to only take care of the top and bottom margins. We also have insets to the left and right of the screen, e.g. when in landscape mode. So Apple introduced the new property with iOS 11. The top and bottom layout guides are now . safeAreaLayoutGuide deprecated To make sure your content isn’t covered by the notch, position it to the safe area layout guide. Similar to the previous top and bottom layout guides, this can be done with constraints. But this simple solution is still far from perfect. Especially in landscape mode, constraining your content area can leave some ugly margins. To avoid this, you can instead add custom insets to your content only where necessary. The new property gives access to the exact pixel inset for the safe area. You can thus tweak the layout to look exactly as you want. For example, you can design the cells of your list items to account for the safe area with a bigger indent. The view content can then cover the whole screen. safeAreaInsets How to Migrate Existing Native iOS Apps to work with Safe Area Insets To make updating your apps a bit easier, you have the option to activate the setting for each of your Storyboards in Xcode. Use Safe Area Layout Guides The Storyboard then replaces the top and bottom layout guides with a safe area and updates the constraints. This is a quick first measure to get your app ready for iPhone X. But as mentioned above, you will still need to check all your views to provide the best possible user experience. For example, to: Let the background of a sub-view use the full screen while keeping the content safe. Decide how to handle the insets when flicking a UIScrollView. Set up your UITableView or UICollectionView to correctly layout for iPhone X. Also, you might not be happy with the result of the default setting in case your app : Use Safe Area Layout Guides hides the system status bar Due to a bug within the latest iOS 11 SDK, the navigation bar does not account for the notch in this case. Except for some workarounds, there is no simple solution for this issue at the moment of writing this guide. At least when relying on native iOS development with Xcode. Android P Developer Preview: Display Cutouts Many Android phone manufacturers already announced their upcoming device models with edge-to-edge displays and rounded corners. In the iOS world, display cutout is equivalent to notch. How to Test Apps with Display Cutout in Android P The Android P Developer Preview allows simulation of display cutout. Android P is available with the SDK Manager of Android Studio. It is sufficient to install the Android P SDK and System Image to test on a virtual Android P device: After installation is complete, you can start an emulator running Android P. The developer settings on Android P offer four different display cutout options to choose from: After selecting this option, the Android device will show with a bigger status bar that also includes a display cutout: The attribute controls how the window is laid out if there is a display cutout. By default your Android P app never extends into cutout areas — with a single exception. As visible on the image above, your app can safely cover the full screen for cutouts that do not exceed the status bar area. layoutInDisplayCutoutMode The window will lose this ability to extend into the cutout area when or is set. Note: FLAG_FULLSCREEN SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_FULLSCREEN To let your app always take advantage of the full screen, you can set the value . You are then responsible to keep your app content within the safe area of the screen. For example, when the device is in landscape mode or if the cutout exceeds the status bar in portrait. LAYOUT_IN_DISPLAY_CUTOUT_MODE_ALWAYS Custom Layouts with Safe Area Insets in Android P Like iOS 11, Android P includes features to determine the safe area of the screen and work with the given insets. The new class lets you find out the location and shape of the non-functional areas where content shouldn’t be displayed. DisplayCutout To determine the existence and placement of the cutouts areas, use the method. Optimize your User Interface with Adaptive Layouts For most use cases, the default settings are fine to let your app look good on devices with and without display cutouts. If you want more control over how to display your content, you can disable the setting of each . You then have two options to work with the safe area: useSafeArea Page Configure only certain content items within the Page to align with the safe area. For us, that hasn't been too much of an issue so far because we're working on the transition between Web 2 and Web 3. You're able to hand that VIP NFT over to someone else once you don't want to play the game anymore More generally, gamers can preserve their in-game assets even if they don't play a game anymore. Either they sell these assets, or they keep them as collectibles, but at least these aren't lost when you delete your game We also like the notion of "social interoperability" of game NFTs: if you win a mighty item in a game that is an NFT, the fact that you've gained this item isn't only visible within the game, you can show that fact off by showing your NFT wallet so someone else. It means that new players only come in because they seek a positive return on their investment, which kind of fulfills the definition of a ponzi scheme - only if there are enough people coming in after you, you can expect to make a positive return. Since the game economies are zero-sum (or negative-sum) economies, there need to be people who are net-negative on the game. "Surprisingly" this is the case in traditional games, though. Here, nobody gets a positive return on their investment, because they're exchanging money for entertainment. Therefore, only if the main driver to play a game (and spend money on it) is outside of pure earning expectations, "play to earn" (I prefer "play and earn") economies can be sustainable all Adrian Krion Jul 26, 2022, 11:19 AM Kelley Dane Interoperability of NFTs in games is typically discussed in a narrow sense of "you can use item X from game A also in game B". This is a very bad example of interoperability of game NFTs because the complexities lie in the semantics of the item (what it to use item X in game B) rather than the mere fact that you have it. Instead, we like focusing on two other aspects of interoperability: means The economical interoperability - this is where you can basically sell items from one game to buy items in another game. This is something very obvious to gamers The social interoperability - as many games, specifically MMOs (massively multiplayer online games), have a large component of "showing off what you got", we think this component can be best leveraged by gamers when the respective items define your identity inside a game don't just live on a game server, but on a public network. The only requirement is that it needs to be incredibly easy for players to deal with these NFTs. NFTs can also be used for additional gamification around very simple game loops (like "match 3"). NFTs can have lives of their own, be merged, blended, modified or destroyed, which can all add an additional layer. It's similar to these story modes for hypercasual game models (like in Candycrush or Gardenscapes), only that you use NFTs for that which players can eventually trade. Web 3 to me is a prerequisite for a Metaverse to attract a large amount of commercial partners and content creators as they would require real estate in such a world before investing in it heavily. On the other hand, I don't think everything will be in the Metaverse. Especially casual gamers will not want to boot up a Metaverse just to enjoy a few minutes of casual gameplay on a commute, and they also don't benefit from the immersion offered. Background I have been playing with Elm for a few months now and have gotten to the point where I am starting to feel like I kn0w my way around the language and how to get things done. This has been a very nice feeling. However, one thing that was gnawing at me this whole time was how a component and an overall application should be sized and set up. While this might seem like a trivial detail, and is something that is easily overlooked, I have found this small detail can have profound impacts on the outcome of a project maintained by one or a few people over a long period or built and maintained by a larger team in a short period. In looking through the Elm code examples, there didn’t seem to be an obvious example, so I looked to personal examples and compared to what seemed to be the opinion of others. Step One: Look to what you have already done… Having come from what now feels like an endless stream of angular applications, I will start there. Based on guides from the omnipresent John Papa in the Angular community, best practice seems to have arrived at dividing controllers, services and factories into the tiniest little blocks possible. On the UI front, directives are the way to go, but I have observed less discipline over their sizing than that of factories and controllers. …quite honestly, it’s 2016. We have enormously productive tools, shortcuts, tricks and abstractions for the backend, why is anyone still writing HTML in the front-end? Practically speaking, I have seen and experienced projects that take tiny services, factories and controllers, share them between directives and, as the code base evolves, create really subtle errors and edge cases that are tricky to track down. Also, directives have a nasty tendency to bloat quite a bit over time. However, the thing that frustrates me the most is: quite honestly, it’s 2016. We have enormously productive tools, shortcuts, tricks and abstractions for the backend, why is anyone still writing HTML on the front-end? The fact that anyone not only wants to continue using HTML, but actually thinks it would be an even better idea to randomly interleave Javascript into a soup of HTML tags just seems like salting an open wound to me. To me, Typescript and Angular 2 just feel like a regression back to Java for the web; and that makes me really sad. So that’s been my experience with Angular 1. Now I need to decide if I want to upgrade to 2 or jump ship. With the Angular folks aggressively pushing Typescript, OOP, and increasingly heavy overhead for creating new projects, it feels like the only fun things in Angular 1 have been sucked out. To me, Typescript and Angular 2 just feel like a regression back to Java for the web; and that makes me really sad. Step Two: Consider alternatives… So the two answers to Angular, as far as I can tell, are React and Elm. I looked into React and actually got really excited about this about Functional Components with React stateless functions and Ramda. I read through it, liked what I saw a lot and thought that would be the model. Chopping everything down to microscopic bits of DOM with data flowing down through their respective components seemed like just the way I thought about applications. I was hooked. post Unfortunately, for all of the great ideas coming out of the React community, and there are many, there are two things that worry me: Tooling, libraries, best practices, APIs and even architectures have been churning every quarter for two years straight. While too much innovation is a classy problem to have, JS fatigue is real and worsens exponentially when working across distributed teams. React is as much a discipline as a framework/design/architecture. If anyone on the team isn’t disciplined, things start to get messy. Thus bringing me to Elm… Elm is wonderful. It handles the state issue by minimizing it as much as practical. It handles the “seriously HTML….it’s 2016” issue by generating it through functions on my behalf. It reduces my applications to testable functions. It reduces the risk of refactor-induced errors through a cheerful and helpful compiler. It eliminates type invariants of all persuasions. It even formats my files for me after each save. It has solved so many of my JS pains I could very well do a backflip for joy. Yet despite all that, something didn’t quite feel right. Spiritual guidance on Brannan Street… So I sought out professional help. I talked to the ever-delightful Richard Feldman at an Elm meetup recently in SF. I shared with him the dream of writing stateless components which could be used like “jigsaw pieces” to build up to bigger and bigger pieces and make a website. He kindly listened and provided feedback that completely changed my train of thought about how an application should be architected. “Make the record as large as you need. When it makes you uncomfortable, it may be time to refactor.” This was the opposite of how I interpreted everything I had read about Elm to date. When I read composable stateless components, I thought about a zillion three line functions slowly building up to a website. Turns out Elm can do that too (and quite well as you will see shortly). But that’s not actually the hard part. It’s the reducer and state management part that really matters. Passing state and messages around an Elm application is an area of lively discussion right now, but prevailing wisdom is that there’s no need to cut the application into smaller pieces than required. It is entirely natural to have a full blown page or major component of an Elm application in one elm file; model, update, view and all. Though you certainly can break each of those three pieces apart if you like. So I took this advice while working through a this weekend with this advice in mind. It was fun, natural and reconnected me with one of the major benefits of functional programming I have experienced: functional programming gives you the tools and framework to build a beautiful API for yourself and others. Elm takes care of the things that have blown you and your team up when your application goes from a POC to production with a host of new features in between. However, microscopic DOM functions aren’t really a problem that required an answer. The thing that makes my blood pressure go down is that state is minimized and in one place for each component start to finish and solely the responsibility of that code’s update function. All of the helper functions to build up to your declarative API are able to stay in the file or move to a helper function file; that’s your call. However, functional programming gives you all the tools you need to quickly build up your API and hopefully, others will find that API useful and able to be leveraged in their projects. Most importantly, because all of those functions are pure functions, you no longer need to worry about someone changing an object, a prototype or anything else in that code while you both are using it. Given an x, that function will always produce a y, regardless of who, when, where and in what context that function is called. I realize this is a major push of React in stateless functional components, but I need to stress, that is a recommendation, not a requirement. Even the most disciplined teams cut corners and POCs have a very nasty habit of outliving their usefulness and scaling terrifyingly beyond their intended use. My experience in software development continually has reminded me of two adages: Any corners that can be cut, at some point will be. There’s nothing longer than temporary. Elm removes all of the major stumbling points of JS frameworks I have seen with very little to give up. But as everything is still so new, best practices seem to be more of an oral tradition than anything committed to writing. So I would like to share the thoughts, experiences and conversations I have had with others so that this language and this community of Elm may flourish. Richard’s feedback was the guidance I needed to push forward and feel confident in what I was doing and made me look forward to building bigger and more interesting things.
