Testers play an important role in software development, and you can consider it in one of two ways: as a career of its own—especially if you can give a lot of attention to detail and don’t mind repetitive tasks as an entry job in tech that you will be able to leverage to achieve your long-term career goals Over the course of my career, I’ve seen few people using software testing as a solid base to expand their work profile. Entry-level: manual testing At the most superficial level, testing is using the application the same way the users do and checking whether it behaves in an expected way. The skills you need to do it successfully are as follows: You need to know the application as a user. You will have to know how to understand the application’s domain and how to use the interface. For example, if you work on logistic software, you will need knowledge of some basic concepts and terminology of that industry. You’ll see a lot of buzzword-driven advice online—where new and shiny things are getting disproportionately more attention while work mules of the industry are overlooked. Knowing that at least one company in your area is using framework X in production can be a strong indication that learning this framework is a good investment for you. This knowledge is especially useful as you can easily check if they have openings in that technology and how difficult it is for them to find people with that skill set. Mentoring opportunity A good company should be interested in supporting your professional growth. If you are lucky, you’ll have the possibility to establish a mentoring relationship inside the company, for example: if management supports the direction in which you want to develop, you can try getting an official mentor to help you with questions as they appear, or a friendly colleague who is willing to guide you through your learning process, or code review where your colleagues give you feedback on your changes—you can always go the extra mile to process the feedback and learn the reasoning behind it Progress options Assuming you want to use software testing as a trampoline to different parts of tech, what are your options? Programming If your long-term plan is to become a programmer, you can use testing as an opportunity to build your muscles. I know a few people who went this path, and it looked very natural—the duties simply shifted more and more toward figuring out requirements and less on checking them. Finally, they were spending most of their time working on the product instead of testing it. Scrum master Another non-obvious job is becoming an internal expert on Scrum methodology and helping out your colleagues to be as productive as possible. This role is part of Scrum methodology. Not every company uses it, but Scrum is popular enough for this to be a valid career option. It’s most likely not a full-time position. In a team with a handful of people, you will not have enough issues or blockers to keep you busy—but it can still be an interesting addition to your skill set and daily duties. Supply issue Not many people are willing to do testing as a job. The problem is: technical people look down on it and would rather build applications and not test them, and non-technical people are not aware of them or simply don’t consider applying there. I cannot guarantee that landing a job in testing will be easy — I have only worked in programming— but I’m sure it can be an interesting option to consider. Despite comprising 1.6 million organizations and raising $500 billion annually in the United States, nonprofits are struggling to leverage recent advancements to further their missions. But this is starting to change. According to a Google survey featured on philanthropy.com, more than half of nonprofits are already turning to generative AI, like Open AI’s ChatGPT, to streamline content creation and grant writing. While this is a positive step forward, a study conducted by Stanford University highlights that nearly 80% of nonprofits still lack an organization-wide policy for AI usage. The Competitive Landscape of the Software Development Job Market

Look, I don't know where you fall on the spectrum of "does emulation promote piracy?", but the idea that a video game company like Nintendo can let off its army of lawyers on a bunch of hobbyists/programers/geeks like a pack of hungry wolves and force them to shut down AND pay over 2 million in dollars just because it thinks emulation promotes piracy should alarm any and every one in the tech space. To quote Steam Founder Gabe Newell: "Piracy is not a pricing issue. It’s a service issue." Amen to that, brother, AMEN! Microsoft's Xbox understands this. Sony's PlayStation understands this. But somehow, the memo was lost on Nintendo which thought it was absolutely ok to force Tropic Haze, the company behind Switch emulator Yuzu and 3ds emulator Citra, to shut down its websites, take down its code repositories AND pay $2.4 million because, apparently, its software allowed people to illegally play Zelda. Nevermind the fact that thousands of people legally pay for Nintendo titles and emulate them on a different hardware because it plays better or because it provides more accessibility. But of course, that's the kind of rhetoric that would fall on deaf ears at Nintendo HQ. Instead, you have Nintendo coming out of the woods to protect its iNtElLeCtUaL pRoPeRtY whenever someone makes a fan project, a ROM website full of abandonware titles, or literally dozens of instances where people just want to do cool and different things with its video game titles. Ironically, except for a handful of titles that Nintendo offers through its online subscription service, there is no "legal" way to play games from the yesteryears without actually emulating them. Emulating video games also ties into video game preservation, but that's a whole different topic altogether. On top of that, Nintendo won't even port its major titles to the PC. Perhaps because it doesn't want to share revenue with others OR it wants to keep selling the Switch consoles. Whatever the case may be, it still SUCKS that Nintendo would just blatantly shut down a project like Yuzu. In some ways, one could argue that this is an attempt by one of the most successful companies in the world to make an example out of a project that is born out of passion. But what does that get the company ultimately? It's already massively rich, and all it's achieving out of these intimidation tactics is to scare off gamers and those who create emulators for them. There's no telling where the scales will tip for emulators for older Nintendo consoles like the Wii or the Wii U, but it wouldn't be surprising if more and more developers decide to not create emulator software because they don't want to fall foul of Nintendo's legal antics. Look, I don't know where you fall on the spectrum of "does emulation promote piracy?", but the idea that a video game company like Nintendo can let off its army of lawyers on a bunch of hobbyists/programers/geeks like a pack of hungry wolves and force them to shut down AND pay over 2 million in dollars just because it thinks emulation promotes piracy should alarm any and every one in the tech space. it To quote Steam Founder Gabe Newell: "Piracy is not a pricing issue. It’s a service issue." Amen to that, brother, AMEN! Microsoft's Xbox understands this. Sony's PlayStation understands this. But somehow, the memo was lost on Nintendo which thought it was absolutely ok to force Tropic Haze, the company behind Switch emulator Yuzu and 3ds emulator Citra, to shut down its websites, take down its code repositories AND pay $2.4 million because, apparently, its software allowed people to illegally play Zelda. Nevermind the fact that thousands of people legally pay for Nintendo titles and emulate them on a different hardware because it plays better or because it provides more accessibility. But of course, that's the kind of rhetoric that would fall on deaf ears at Nintendo HQ. Instead, you have Nintendo coming out of the woods to protect its iNtElLeCtUaL pRoPeRtY whenever someone makes a fan project, a ROM website full of abandonware titles, or literally dozens of instances where people just want to do cool and different things with its video game titles. Ironically, except for a handful of titles that Nintendo offers through its online subscription service, there is no "legal" way to play games from the yesteryears without actually emulating them. Emulating video games also ties into video game preservation, but that's a whole different topic altogether. On top of that, Nintendo won't even port its major titles to the PC. Perhaps because it doesn't want to share revenue with others OR it wants to keep selling the Switch consoles. Whatever the case may be, it still SUCKS that Nintendo would just blatantly shut down a project like Yuzu. In some ways, one could argue that this is an attempt by one of the most successful companies in the world to make an example out of a project that is born out of passion. But what does that get the company ultimately? It's already massively rich, and all it's achieving out of these intimidation tactics is to scare off gamers and those who create emulators for them. There's no telling where the scales will tip for emulators for older Nintendo consoles like the Wii or the Wii U, but it wouldn't be surprising if more and more developers decide to not create emulator software because they don't want to fall foul of Nintendo's legal antics. So, yeah. In the tech world, specifically the space, continuously moving forward is a mandate or you will get left behind. Bard becoming Gemini is more than them just slapping on a new label and calling it a day. Of course, it goes deeper than that. It is more like they're sending out a message to the world, "Hey, we're leveling up, taking things to a whole new dimension." But for real, does a new name mean we're about to get our minds blown, or is it just the same old tunes on a brand-new speaker? software development And let's be honest – every time a favorite app or software pulls the rebrand card, there's a hot minute of chaos. Web 3.0 The Future of Decentralization: Cody Marx Bailey and the Andromeda Effect Ishan Pandey: Hi Cody, great to have you here for our "Behind the Startup" series. Please tell us about your background, your journey, and your role at Andromeda Protocol. Cody Marx Bailey: I got involved with computers in the early 90s as a ten-year-old. Got most of my experience first-hand by teaching myself Unix and Linux. I was one of the first web developers in 1993 and watched the web get built, site by site, through the 90s. I fell in love with the principles of free and open-source software. In the 2000s I helped build out the free culture movement online and some of the foundational technologies in social media, namely Hashtags. One question I get a lot is when did I get into blockchain and my answer usually confuses people when I tell them that it was in the late 90s. They ask how that be if Bitcoin hadn’t been around until 2010? Well, all the pieces of blockchain were around in technologies such as SETI and BitTorrent. So when I read the BTC whitepaper, it was like “ohhh, yeah, that makes sense. Ishan Pandey: What is the mission of Andromeda, and how does it contribute to bringing Easier, Better, and Faster capabilities to Web 3.0 and the blockchain industry? Cody Marx Bailey: I’ve been kicking around the idea of an operating system since 2017 when I helped create the ERC721 standard for NFTs. That technology was a crucial step towards creating unique digital objects. I made a few casual attempts at creating the OS with Ethereum and Solidity, but in the end the technology just wasn’t good enough. The need for an OS stems from recognising that the current state of these primitive machines is extremely hard to use. Every blockchain experience is different, there’s very little standardization, few concepts that normal people can relate to. That’s the job of an OS - to abstract away all the technicalities and replace them with more user-friendly concepts. Ishan Pandey: Can you explain the concept of a blockchain operating system, and in what ways does AndromedaOS stand out as an operating system designed for distributed computing frameworks? Cody Marx Bailey: Modern operating systems found on PCs, cell phones, tablets and other devices have a specific set of responsibilities. The first is to establish an environment in which applications and services can operate seamlessly through standards. This is done with things like user accounts, sophisticated application messaging services, a common namespace for resource referencing through a directory tree, and many other things we expect to see on a modern OS. One system that we borrowed a lot of our inspiration from architecturally is the POSIX family of standards. Ishan Pandey: How does AndromedaOS leverage the Cosmos Ecosystem, particularly the Rust/CosmWasm combo, to achieve breakthroughs in interoperability and complexity in the blockchain space? Cody Marx Bailey: Ask anyone who has developed in Solidity/EVM, regardless of the underlying chain, and they’ll tell you that the language isn’t good enough for creating the type of system that Andromeda has. Rust/CosmWasm is the right tool for the job. Just a small side note, Rust is now being used in the Linux Kernel, I doubt you’ll ever see Solidity being used anywhere outside of the EVM. As for the Cosmos, the Internet of Blockchains might sound like a buzzword slogan that someone just slapped on the homepage, but if you look closer it reveals an architecture of independent nodes where no chain has primacy or authority over others. In the L1/L2 narrative in Ethereum, you’ve got all these temporary solutions to the crunch on blockspace, whereas in the Cosmos, we have the ability to scale with new chains without needing to always pay rent back down to an L1. Ishan Pandey: Can you share any exciting updates on Andromeda's plans for its native token and overall ecosystem expansion? Cody Marx Bailey: Absolutely, we're thrilled to share a significant milestone for Andromeda and its community. Our native token, $ANDR, is set to make its debut on the MEXC Exchange on February 22, 2024. This marks the first time $ANDR will be listed on a centralized exchange (CEX), signaling a new chapter of accessibility and growth for our ecosystem. MEXC Exchange is renowned for its extensive global reach, trusted by over seven million users worldwide. The listing of $ANDR on such a platform is not merely about offering a new trading venue; it's a pivotal moment towards achieving global adoption and enhancing the token's liquidity. Andromeda is known for its multi-chain Operating System, launched last year, which is redefining Web3 technology by simplifying the development and deployment of decentralized applications (dApps). The Andromeda Operating System (aOS) reduces the complexity and development time from months to minutes, empowering developers to create seamlessly across the Cosmos Ecosystem and beyond. The listing of $ANDR on MEXC is expected to catalyze further growth within the Andromeda ecosystem, aligning with our mission to make on-chain development easier, better, and faster, expanding what's possible in Web3. Ishan Pandey: How does AndromedaOS on multiple Cosmos chains enable seamless cross-chain application creation, and what advantages does this offer users? Cody Marx Bailey: Just like you have different layers inside the OSI model of traditional/modern networking, the Cosmos is starting to reveal a similar stack of concerns. IBC is the transport layer, and our addition to the stack is AMP, or the Andromeda Messaging Protocol. We look at IBC channels as just secure ways to get information from one aOS install to another - similar to how technologies like TLS work. Separation of concerns with seamless handoffs between the layers works really well from an architectural standpoint - the entire internet was built that way. Ishan Pandey: Why hasn't the Web3 industry adopted a standardized OS, and how would the landscape change with the introduction of no-code development tools? Cody Marx Bailey: I think everyone is still trapped in the “old way” of doing things. Monolithic applications that do one thing and one thing really well. There’s so much money to be made in creating strictly financial applications, that’s where all the attention is. The “distributed ledger for financial applications” narrative has all the attention right now, but no one is really looking at the application space. These little computers with abstracted decentralized hardware are maturing quickly and we believe that the Cosmos architecture is the first possible moment that we can build a legitimate OS. Ishan Pandey: How does Andromeda envision its business model evolving, especially considering the unique features and services it offers in the Web3 space? Cody Marx Bailey: Andromeda’s business model is built for the explosive growth that occurs from network effects and global distribution.  The future of open source software is to power all the public infrastructure our civilization needs.  And that depends upon its sustainability.  Andromeda achieves sustainability by using an open source Apache 2.0 license and tokenomics to incentivize software development. With this license, commercially investable open-source software is finally possible with more egalitarian outcomes than possible using pre-bitcoin FOSS models. Ishan Pandey: What do you anticipate as the impact of introducing and expanding ETFs on the crypto industry, and what opportunities or challenges do you foresee emerging from this development? Cody Marx Bailey: ETFs are an important development for mass adoption of cryptocurrency.  It mitigates crypto FUD and makes it easy to get price exposure. Getting crypto ETFs in the mass market’s portfolio is an important first step to introducing the possibilities and promise of DeFi. Of course many will be confused to learn an ETF is not the same as holding a cryptocurrency in your wallet. But over time the market will discern the power, legitimacy and value of cryptocurrency over fiat. Don’t forget to like and share the story! For us, community-driven awards are the most authentic and meaningful awards of all. It is further validation of what we have developed and continue to build upon as a company. We are grateful to all those who supported us in winning this award. What sets you apart from the competition? HarperDB was founded by developers who spent decades fighting the limitations of multi-system architectures. After exploring the logic behind systems like MongoDB, Kafka, Redis, and Node.js, it was apparent that combining the underlying systems into one distributed technology would have significant benefits from a performance, cost, and ease of development perspective.  From that realization, we created our unified system architecture that backs HarperDB. Aside from its performance advantage, I think HarperDB’s simplicity motivates companies to make the transition to our technology. We’ve seen distributed applications built in weeks with HarperDB that easily could have taken several quarters to plan and build with other technologies. Ultimately, HarperDB was a database built by developers for developers.  We built a product we would want to use. As our product continues to advance while we are focused on solving large enterprise problems, we still want to create a product that seamlessly integrates into a developer's workflow and is fun to build and deploy. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Our team is made up of amazing people. One of our core values is authenticity, and what I love about our culture and our team is that people bring their authentic selves to HarperDB. We have a team of weirdos and misfit toys who are extremely passionate about innovation and solving complex problems.  We like working on hard things, and we love delighting developers and customers. Our team is made up of people who do not let existing paradigms and patterns stop them but will push through to create something new and incredible. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Sleeping. We have been building HarperDB for almost seven years.  It has been an incredible journey, and we have had many amazing moments and a lot of hard ones. At the end of the day, everything that we have achieved has been due to the people who make up our team.  When we founded HarperDB, it was all about technology, and while that remains a huge part of what we do, I have learned that people matter more. If I weren’t running HarperDB, I would be doing something to help improve people's lives in meaningful ways. What that looks like exactly, I am not sure. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? From a business development perspective, proofs-of-concept (PoCs) are our number one metric. Although we also track npm and Docker downloads, PoCs are the key metric leading to business success. Since what we do is a first for the software development industry, people need to experience the benefits firsthand. We find that engineers tend to experience a light bulb moment with HarperDB once they fully internalize the breadth of value a unified system architecture can bring. After the light bulb moment, HarperDB tends to be part of nearly every deployment since building without it feels cumbersome and counterproductive. Tell us how your startup is changing the world. HarperDB changes the world on many levels. This title is a recognition that we are building a tool developers want to use. To embrace that, we will continue delivering features and performance improvements that help drive their software products forward. Today, nearly every feature we release is a direct response to requests from development teams worldwide. We will continue to serve them cutting-edge features that make their processes and products more performant. What goals are you looking forward to accomplishing in 2024? 2023 was a breakthrough year for HarperDB in many ways. Our product gained significant traction with three releases that embedded data streaming capabilities deep into our technology. This was a welcome addition for many companies courting standalone data streaming solutions since they now had all the power they needed without the multi-year journey standalone streaming solutions required. 2024 so far has been customer and market-focused.  We have seen a strong reaction in the market to our product and tremendous validation, with many large organizations implementing mission-critical workloads on HarperDB.  We plan to spend 2024 growing our customer base while continuing to innovate. Which trend(s) are you most excited about in 2024? Share your reasons. For the last several years, people have been exploring what distributed computing really means. We have seen containers explode in their usage and other distributed deployment methodologies.  That said, that has created new paradigm shifts in how people think about application development, compute, deployment, security, and many other areas. We are seeing 2024 as the year where experimentation becomes a reality.  Organizations, large and small, are embracing new architectures that unlock the true power of distributed computing to improve customer experiences, do more with AI and ML, reduce cost, and build high-availability architectures. In a lot of ways, this leads to the democratization of technology.  It allows people to build bigger and better without being locked into a single cloud vendor.  I am most excited about the things people will build with this newfound freedom. 2023 had been another crazy year, especially in tech, with layoffs and the Generative AI takeover! Which trend are you most concerned about? Be as brief or as detailed as you like. We have had a pretty clear vision for where we wanted to take HarperDB from the beginning and what we wanted to build both as a product and as a company.  We try to stay focused on putting one foot in front of the other.  Ultimately, trends in the tech industry are cyclical, and there are booms and busts.  High valuations and low valuations.  Lots of hiring and lots of layoffs. Quite honestly, the trend that worries me the most is worrying about trends. People keep building great stuff.  Great people need jobs.  Good companies need funding.  Large companies need help solving big problems.  These things remain the same regardless of the current trends. I think the thing I worry about the most is people losing sight of the fact that this will all repeat itself. Share your biggest success so far and/or your biggest failure so far. Our biggest failure by far was that we were way too early for the market.  People thought we were CRAZY when we started HarperDB.  We were too early because we didn’t realize the problem we founded HarperDB to solve was not a common problem at that time, and only a handful of companies were experiencing it ten years ago. We should have done more research, talked to more companies, and paid closer attention to the market.  We were just so enamored with solving the problem that we didn’t do our homework.   We let passion get in the way of reason. Our biggest success has been our resilience as founders and as a team as a whole.  We are extremely proud of the team we have built and have had relatively little turnover in our time. We have also managed to stay alive and continue to build a tremendous product to reach the point where the market has caught up with our crazy ideas, which have become a commonplace everyday problem.
