While the data is scattered all over, we felt that there wasn’t a single place where one could find this data. There are several hundreds of SaaS companies. This list had just a few dozen startups in 2014 and was a side project on our blog. Thanks to community comments, it grew huge. Now to make it even bigger, we are publishing it on Medium. The biggest danger to Blockchain networks from quantum computing is its ability to break traditional encryption. Google sent shock-waves around the internet when it was claimed, had built a quantum computer able to solve formerly impossible mathematical calculations–with some fearing crypto industry could be at risk. Google states that its experiment is the first experimental challenge against the extended Church-Turing thesis — also known as computability thesis — which claims that traditional computers can effectively carry out any “reasonable” model of computation What is Quantum Computing? Quantum computing is the area of study focused on developing computer technology based on the principles of quantum theory. The quantum computer, following the laws of quantum physics, would gain enormous processing power through the ability to be in multiple states, and to perform tasks using all possible permutations simultaneously. A Comparison of Classical and Quantum Computing Classical computing relies, at its ultimate level, on principles expressed by Boolean algebra. Data must be processed in an exclusive binary state at any point in time or bits. While the time that each transistor or capacitor need be either in 0 or 1 before switching states is now measurable in billionths of a second, there is still a limit as to how quickly these devices can be made to switch state. As we progress to smaller and faster circuits, we begin to reach the physical limits of materials and the threshold for classical laws of physics to apply. Beyond this, the quantum world takes over. In a quantum computer, a number of elemental particles such as electrons or photons can be used with either their charge or polarization acting as a representation of 0 and/or 1. Each of these particles is known as a quantum bit, or qubit, the nature and behavior of these particles form the basis of quantum computing. Quantum Superposition and Entanglement The two most relevant aspects of quantum physics are the principles of superposition and entanglement. Superposition: Think of a qubit as an electron in a magnetic field. The electron's spin may be either in alignment with the field, which is known as a spin-up state, or opposite to the field, which is known as a spin-down state. According to quantum law, the particle enters a superposition of states, in which it behaves as if it were in both states simultaneously. Each qubit utilized could take a superposition of both 0 and 1. Entanglement: Particles that have interacted at some point retain a type of connection and can be entangled with each other in pairs, in a process known as correlation. Knowing the spin state of one entangled particle -up or down - allows one to know that the spin of its mate is in the opposite direction. Quantum entanglement allows qubits that are separated by incredible distances to interact with each other instantaneously (not limited to the speed of light). No matter how great the distance between the correlated particles,  they will remain entangled as long as they are isolated. Taken together, quantum superposition and entanglement create an enormously enhanced computing power. Where a 2-bit register in an ordinary computer can store only one of four binary configurations (00, 01, 10, or 11) at any given time, a 2-qubit register in a quantum computer can store all four numbers simultaneously, because each qubit represents two values. If more qubits are added, the increased capacity is expanded exponentially Difficulties with Quantum Computers During the computation phase of a quantum calculation, the slightest disturbance in a quantum system (say a stray photon or wave of EM radiation) causes the quantum computation to collapse, a process known as de-coherence. A quantum computer must be totally isolated from all external interference during the computation phase. Interference Given the nature of quantum computing, error correction is ultra-critical - even a single error in a calculation can cause the validity of the entire computation to collapse. Error correction Closely related to the above two, retrieving output data after a quantum calculation is complete risks corrupting the data. Output observance What is Quantum Supremacy? According to the Financial Times, Google claims to have successfully built the world’s most powerful quantum computer. What that means, according to Google’s researchers, is that calculations that normally take more than 10,000 years to perform, its computer was able to do in about 200 seconds, and potentially mean Blockchain, and the encryption that underpins it, could be broken. Asymmetric cryptography used in crypto relies on keypairs, namely a private and public key. Public keys can be calculated from their private counterpart, but not the other way around. This is due to the impossibility of certain mathematical problems. Quantum computers are more efficient in accomplishing this by magnitudes, and if the calculation is done the other way then the whole scheme breaks. It would appear Google is still some way away from building a quantum computer that could be a threat to Blockchain cryptography or other encryption. "Google's supercomputer currently has 53 qubits," said Dragos Ilie, a quantum computing and encryption researcher at Imperial College London. "In order to have any effect on bitcoin or most other financial systems it would take at least about 1500 qubits and the system must allow for the entanglement of all of them," Ilie said. Meanwhile, scaling quantum computers is "a huge challenge," according to Ilie. Blockchain networks including Bitcoin’s architecture relies on two algorithms: Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for digital signatures and SHA-256 as a hash function. A quantum computer could use Shor’s algorithm to get your private from your public key, but the most optimistic scientific estimates say that even if this were possible, it won’t happen during this decade. “A 160-bit elliptic curve cryptographic key could be broken on a quantum computer using around 1000 qubits while factoring the security-wise equivalent 1024-bit RSA modulus would require  2000 qubits”. By comparison, Google's measly 53 qubits are still no match for this kind of cryptography. According to research paper on the matter published by Cornell University. But that isn’t to say that there’s no cause for alarm. While the native encryption algorithms used by Blockchain’s applications are safe for now, the fact is that the rate of advancements in quantum technology is increasing, and that could, in time, pose a threat. "We expect their computational power will continue to grow at a double exponential rate," Google researchers. Quantum cryptography? Quantum cryptography uses physics to develop a cryptosystem completely secure against being compromised without knowledge of the sender or the receiver of the messages. The word quantum itself refers to the most fundamental behavior of the smallest particles of matter and energy. Quantum cryptography is different from traditional cryptographic systems in that it relies more on physics, rather than mathematics, as a key aspect of its security model. Essentially, quantum cryptography is based on the usage of individual particles/waves of light (photon) and their intrinsic quantum properties to develop an unbreakable cryptosystem (because it is impossible to measure the quantum state of any system without disturbing that system.) Quantum cryptography uses photons to transmit a key. Once the key is transmitted, coding and encoding using the normal secret-key method can take place. But how does a photon become a key? How do you attach information to a photon's spin? This is where binary code comes into play. Each type of a photon's spin represents one piece of information -- usually a 1 or a 0, for binary code. This code uses strings of 1s and 0s to create a coherent message. For example, 11100100110 could correspond with h-e-l-l-o. So a binary code can be assigned to each photon -- for example, a photon that has a vertical spin ( | ) can be assigned a 1. “If you build it correctly, no hacker can hack the system. The question is what it means to build it correctly,” said physicist Renato Renner from the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Zurich. Regular, non-quantum encryption can work in a variety of ways but generally a message is scrambled and can only be unscrambled using a secret key. The trick is to make sure that whomever you’re trying to hide your communication from doesn’t get their hands on your secret key. Cracking the private key in a modern crypto system would generally require figuring out the factors of a number that is the product of two insanely huge prime numbers. The numbers are chosen to be so large that, with the given processing power of computers, it would take longer than the lifetime of the universe for an algorithm to factor their product. Encryption techniques have their vulnerabilities. Certain products – called weak keys – happen to be easier to factor than others. Also, Moore’s Law continually ups the processing power of our computers. Even more importantly, mathematicians are constantly developing new algorithms that allow for easier factorization. But people LOOOOOOOVE parallax sites… right? Everyone knows clean and simple doesn’t win you a Clio Award. *Satire* A new year is a great time to launch a new website. But with that comes many questions. What are the trends? What type of website can I build that’s so innovative, game-changing, and synergistic that people can’t help but wonder how they survived in life without my Jackson Pollock-inspired mishmash of website greatness? If you really want your website to stand out in 2018, here’s what you have to do. Pop-Ups Everywhere A great way to introduce people to your website is to ask them to sign up for your email list even though they haven’t even figured out whether they like what you’re selling yet. Just throw as many pop-ups as you can on there. In fact, you can throw one on top of another on top of another! Who cares if it’s a bad user experience? Some “growth hacker” you met at the New York Tech Meetup the other night assured you that these babies convert! And, if people don’t want to opt in to receive badly formatted emails from you once every six to eight months, make sure you leave a condescending opt-out option like, “No, I’m a loser that doesn’t want to improve my life” instead of a simple “No thanks.” Animations Galore What could be more fun than lots of animations on your site? Sure, it’ll fuck up the UX on non-standard screen sizes and cause visual distractions that pull your site viewers away from the content they really need to know. But you really, really must have animations on your site so people can tell you apart from all those companies that save animations for dumb and impractical uses like network television cartoons. For added standout effects, add sound effects reminiscent of the most most awkward corporate PowerPoint presentation you’ve ever seen. Or, just add music! I recommend the same song you had on your MySpace page back in 2005. And, if you really want to tell a compelling story, make sure it’s all parallax slide-in effects and requires about 5,000 scroll gestures before anyone can find what they need. 26,000 Nav Bar Items Why have a simple navigation structure when you could have drop downs upon drop-downs upon drop downs? Make sure you add every piece of content your company has ever produced to your drop down options. And make sure the drop downs all rely specifically on hover states that are impossible to navigate on mobile… that’s sure to catch someone’s attention! Hover States On Everything Speaking of hover states, don’t forget to put them on literally everything on your site. Who cares if they make for a shitty tablet experience? Put ’em on every image, every line of text… it doesn’t even matter whether the image is clickable! Hell, just make the page a giant hover state. It may not add much value to your site design, but you’ll inevitably be able to brag about how hard it was for your dev team to code all that insanity, not unlike that time you kept them working through the BlizzCon Livestream to fix your cousin’s chemtrail conspiracy WordPress site that got hacked. Optimize For Desktop You already know that amazing scroll bar you put on the front page is going to look like shit on mobile. But who cares? Optimize for desktop anyway. Who cares if 60% of all ecommerce web traffic on Black Friday came from mobile? Desktop is the way of the FUTURE! Make sure to create a crazy, elaborate site and to completely ignore the mobile experience. It’s not like anyone pays attention to mobile design anyway. Even if your mobile site isn’t even responsive, you’ll still be well on your way to winning design awards because design awards judges only want to see crazy interfaces and DGAF about whether the site is actually functional. Include Lots Of Advertising It doesn’t matter what kind of website you have — it could be a SaaS product, for all I care — just make sure it features clickbait from companies like Outbrain and Taboola that love to use sites like yours to advertise weight loss pills and male pattern baldness cures, and borderline revenge porn. In fact, if any company has ever considered paying you to run their ads on your site, make sure you let ’em all happen instead of trying to find a more viable revenue stream. For added umph, you can make sure to include autoplay web commercials that blast at top volume as users scroll through your site and mine Bitcoin in the web page background. Make Sure The Site Takes A Really, Really Long Time To Load The best things in life are worth waiting for, right? Just like it’s worth it to wait for your brand new animation-fueled, brightly-colored, hover state-endowed website! When designing your site, assume that everyone has the same top-level broadband that you do and that they can all download everything as fast as you can. And if they can’t? Well, think of it this way… that’s 20 more seconds they’ll spend on your site, so you can brag to your marketing manager about what a great job you’re doing keeping people on your site’s home page. If you notice a high bounce rate, you can just assume the user was some kind of idiot who wasn’t really interested in seeing your website anyway. Bury the Content Users Want This will ensure users spend an exorbitant amount of time on your website. Have so many options and accordion menus that they enter an endless rabbit hole of clicking through internal links and expanding nested sections as they try to find things that don’t actually even exist. Visitors might be stuck on your site forever! And who cares if they don’t convert or if they can only figure out how to leave your site after they throw their computers against the wall because they’re so frustrated by your black hole of a website? They should have clicked the right link in the first place! Don’t Make It ADA-Accessible That would take hours! Make sure your website stands out by using the time it would take to make the site ADA accessible and putting it into a funky new interaction design feature that turns your call to action buttons into pictures of Jim Carey in “The Mask” when you click it. That would be “Smokin’!” But really, how many people in the U.S. who use the internet actually have disabilities? Only like 18.7% of Americans. Screw ‘em! Spend No Time On Copy Great copy is a waste of time! Your users can figure out what your product does. Everyone knows what “A data science-backed algorithmic approach to neural network analysis for a winning blockchain platform” means and understands exactly how it applies to their needs. Instead of spending time on copy, spend more time designing layer upon layer of funky interfaces. In fact, if you just take the time to craft a comprehensive illustration of your data-backed algorithmic approach to neural network analysis on the blockchain, then everyone will understand how it works. exactly And there you have it! That’s how you build a website that stands out in 2018. Who needs something clean, sleek, simple, and to the point? 10 Ways To Make Your Innovative, Game-Changing, Synergistic Website Stand Out In 2018

When the first home telephones were being installed in the 1870s, the companies selling them had a problem: phones aren’t very useful if you can only call a few people. However, this challenge got easier and easier as the networks expanded, since every new customer’s presence in the phone book increased the overall value of the product as a communication tool. This concept — called a — entered its renaissance during the tech boom, as platforms like Facebook and the Apple ecosystem rapidly secured huge market shares on the power of large userbases. “network effect” Just like the telephone, tech products with strong built-in network effects tend to become the most profitable and sustainable businesses around. I say “profitable” because companies that have strong network effects typically result in a “winner-take-all” dynamic that leads to massive market shares. I say “sustainable” because once they’ve secured a majority position, it becomes less and less attractive for people to fully leave or switch to another network. Fast forward to 2017, and everyone is looking around for the next runaway network effect. As I’ve been developing for Ethereum and the decentralized web, I’ve discovered that decentralized apps on Ethereum are empowered by a whole new type of network effect, or what I’d refer to as “synergies”. Let’s start by looking more closely at some classic network effects, and build up to show how Ethereum enables an attractive environment for application developers building on top of it. Direct network effects LinkedIn is a classic example of a network effect in action. Every new employee that joins the platform adds value for existing users by increasing their networking potential. The more members there are on the platform, the more attractive it is for employers to join. Every new employer that joins the platform adds value because you now have more employment opportunities to choose from. As this viral network grows, it becomes unattractive to switch to a LinkedIn clone with a smaller network. This virtuous cycle typically results in one or two companies taking 80% of the market in a . power law distribution YouTube, Airbnb, Uber, Facebook, WhatsApp, and eBay are also strong examples of businesses built on a direct network effect. Indirect network effects When we typically talk of these network effects, we’re typically referring to : increases in usage lead to direct increases in value. direct network effects However, there’s another type of network effect called “ ”, where increase in usage of the product creates more value for products, which creates an ecosystem of sorts that increases the value of the original product. indirect network effects complementary For example, let’s take the Mac computer. It has some direct network effects — for example, increase in the number of Mac users increases its value because a greater number of people can share compatible files. But the indirect network effects that arise from the complementary Mac applications are probably much more important: the larger the number of Mac users, the greater the demand for compatible Mac applications, which leads to greater demand for software firms and developers to build Mac applications. More development leads to lower prices and a greater variety of applications, making Mac users better off. This hardware/software paradigm applies to a number of markets: iPhones (hardware) and iPhone applications (software) Android phones (hardware) and Android applications (software) ATM cards (hardware) and compatible teller machines (software) Televisions (hardware) and movies / TV-shows (software) Electric cars (hardware) and electric fueling stations (software) In each one of these cases, you have some standard hardware platform, and a variety of complementary software and services. Similarly, we can argue that indirect network effects exist between the web platform itself and all the applications built for the web — specifically, every new user added to the web platform creates more demand for web applications, which in turn creates a greater variety of web applications and benefits users. But can such indirect network effects also exist among two complementary software products built on the web platform? Friction in network effects between web apps: proprietary APIs On the surface, a photo sharing service and a cloud storage service would seem primed for indirect network effects. We could argue that an increase in usage of the photo sharing service would lead to an increase in usage of the cloud storage service, since the photo sharing service has to store more and more photos somewhere, while cloud storage services need customers with lots of things (such as photos) to store. In theory, this increased demand for cloud storage services creates a greater variety of cloud storage services and lower prices (due to more competition), which in the end, is better off for the photo sharing service. But the problem here is that unlike the hardware/software paradigm, there’s no single standard for “a photo sharing service” or a “cloud storage service” on the web today. Centralized platforms like Instagram often have to make a tradeoff between the openness they are willing to enable vs. control of their core technologies and data. Creating shared technology standards is great, but can be difficult when competing technology firms each want their R&D to be well-represented. So unlike the indirect network effects seen with a standard hardware platform and complementary software, we wind up with a cloud storage platform and a photo sharing service. How do they find synergies? Well, they do it by directly plugging together APIs. proprietary proprietary proprietary Consider Amazon S3’s proprietary API for its cloud storage service. In order to create an integration between Amazon S3 and Instagram, the two products have to engage directly — Instagram needs to sign up, create an Amazon account, pay for the service, and build new back-end code that plugs into Amazon’s proprietary APIs. If Instagram finds a need for another cloud storage service (e.g. Google Cloud Platform), it would need to sign up, create an account, and pay for the service, and build additional back-end code that plugs into Google’s proprietary APIs and so on. One proprietary API after another. Soon enough, your application architecture looks like this: Are you ready for the other shoe to drop? Well then, let’s take a look at how this all changes when you’re building on an open, decentralized platform like Ethereum. How Ethereum tackles the synergy problem Ethereum is a blockchain with a built-in Turing-complete programming language and state-management capabilities that make it simple to write smart contracts and decentralized applications. In theory, this enables us to build a more “decentralized web”. Just like the current web, we find indirect network effects between the Ethereum platform and all the applications that get built on top — every new user that gets added to the platform creates more demand for decentralized applications, which in turn creates a greater variety of decentralized applications. It’s a win-win. But there’s more. The beauty of building an application on Ethereum is that its decentralized, permissionless and open nature allows complementary applications to seamlessly integrate with each other as first class citizens. Proprietary APIs aren’t a problem because every application is written on the same virtual machine (aka Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)) and uses the same underlying language (aka EVM Code), the same primitives (aka Smart Contracts, Accounts, Addresses, Transactions, Messages etc.), same fee structure (aka gas price), same state validation logic (e.g. proof-of-work, proof-of-stake), same wallets, etc. In other words, . everything is built around a single shared standard As a result, it’s clear to see that there’s also indirect network effects every complementary decentralized applications that get built on top of Ethereum — every new application that gets added can seamlessly integrate with every other existing application, which in turns increases the value of all applications on the platform. among Every time any of these applications adds a new user, it increases the value of that application, which in turn indirectly increases the value of every other application on the platform (again, because of the ability to seamlessly integrate and benefit from one another). And the best part is, all these synergies emerge automatically. Overall, the decentralized web pushes applications away from building up disproportional direct network effects and monopolistic business practices, to one where there are indirect network effects and synergies among every application built on Ethereum. Hopefully, this opens up lots of choice, flexibility and freedom. An Example of Synergies among Decentralized applications built on ethereum But will this really happen? Well, it’s already happening, at least in the decentralized app microcosm. First, consider this handful of Ethereum apps: : A platform built on Ethereum which sources computing infrastructure in a decentralized manner to create a global market for computation. A “worldwide supercomputer” that anyone can contribute to and/or buy from. Golem : A data carrier between external Web APIs and a decentralized application on Ethereum, where security is enforced by cryptographic proofs. Oracalize : A digital identity service built on Ethereum that makes it simple and safe to make statements about who a person or entity is when interacting with smart contracts and other uPort identities, either on-chain or off-chain. uPort : A decentralized prediction market that operates on the Ethereum blockchain. By using the platform, individuals and companies will be able to forecast future events (e.g. expected stock fundamentals, price discovery, etc.) Gnosis : A decentralized governance platform built on Ethereum that offers various services to managed decentralized services and entities. Aragon Finally, let’s walk through an example of what real-world automatic synergies on Ethereum look like. Say you’re building a decentralized insurance application. With the addition of uPort to the ecosystem, you no longer have to do KYC and digital signatures yourself, and can seamlessly use uPort to verify a user’s identity. Similarly, every other application on Ethereum automatically benefits from the identity service uPort provides. And every time uPort adds a new user, it benefits the entire ecosystem because more users can be verified across any application that uses uPort. With the addition Golem to the ecosystem, you can use their distributed plug-and-play computation platform for running various services within your insurance application. Similarly, every other application on Ethereum natively and automatically benefits from their service. Every time Golem adds a new user (i.e. machine), it adds more compute power to the system and benefits the entire ecosystem. With the addition of Gnosis, your insurance application can get market predictions of the uncertain outcome that a borrower on your platform will default on their loan. Similarly, every other application built on Ethereum benefits from a predictions market for their own application. Every time Gnosis adds a new user, it makes its predictions market platform better, which benefits the entire ecosystem. With the addition of Oracalize, you can now fetch external information like price feeds, quotes, etc. Similarly, every other application built on Ethereum benefits from Oracalize by now having the ability to fetch external information. With the addition of Aargon to the ecosystem, you can now create a voting governance system that helps process insurance claims in a fast, cheap, and fair manner. Similarly, every other application on Ethereum can seamlessly use Aargon’s governance system within their own applications. Every user that gets added to Aargon’s platform makes their services better, which benefits the entire ecosystem. … and so on. All these integrations happen seamlessly, without custom integrations, back-ends, payment models, APIs, and so on. This is just a small scaled version of what’s possible. There are . seriously endless possibilities for these automatic synergies The irony of Ethereum: removing friction makes monopolies difficult The flip side of all this is that it becomes much harder to build giant businesses off direct network effects on Ethereum. The radically streamlined ecosystem makes the cost of switching to alternative services much lower. Even from an end user’s perspective, it becomes much simpler to switch from one service to another, so long as they are on the underlying Ethereum platform and have an Ethereum account/address that works across any application. Unlike the LinkedIn example I used at the beginning of this post, creating a “moat” around any service becomes difficult since most of the proprietary puzzle pieces have been removed from the picture. How this “monopoly resistance” feature will play out as real-world businesses choose Ethereum as their playing ground remains to be seen. Regardless of the outcome, I’m personally excited about the enormous potential for a system where apps as well as users can create value with little to no friction.
