When I was diagnosed with autism at age 28, I finally got an explanation for so many of the struggles I’d faced in school and my professional life as a writer and website designer. My doctor explained that some people go undiagnosed due to learning to mask specific indicators they are autistic throughout their lifetime. Since I worked behind a computer, I typically avoided situations where I might have to make small talk. I could plan my own schedule and take breaks when I felt overwhelmed. I set up my home office workspace how I wanted and reduced distractions. However, I found myself struggling when I had to venture outside the norm for a team meeting or professional conference, which ultimately led to my diagnosis. Now, I’m proud of the coping strategies and tools I’ve used to grow in my field since I was diagnosed. One of the biggest aids has, to my surprise, been the rise in AI. What a Neurodevelopmental Diagnosis Means for Design and Development Professionals When my psychologist first suggested I might be neurodivergent, I felt unsure of the potential diagnosis. Many people including me are inspired by fictional geniuses who can do things impossible for simple people I can’t imagine a great developer who wouldn’t love Rami Malek’s character in Mr.Robot. The ultimate hacker who can beat the most powerful organization with the power of his mind — doesn’t that sound attractive? Of course, it does. …But the cruel reality is that there is no space for lone geniuses in there. Firstly, the real world contains so many different factors affecting the end result that it is completely impossible to plan everything. It is better to think of it as some level of randomness. It seems obvious but, still, in many complex situations many smart people start trying to calculate all pluses and minuses to come up with an ideal plan (coming up with a kind of brute-force search). «Even if I can’t plan everything, multi-factor analyses will give better results than using some rule of thumb» — sounds rational, right? This mindset is especially common among many developers. It’s not surprising that I myself have been adept at this kind of thinking as well. And here we come to the second reason why this mindset usually fails on the long-distance… Even if you don’t play Chess you probably hear something about openings theory and know that all great players use a predefined list of moves in the early stage of the game. Why to do that? The chess board has only 64 rows and often you have only 2–6 reasonable moves from the current position. Significantly less than in real life! Still, that leads to around 10^120 possible games and makes it impossible to solve chess by brute force with the human brain. Therefore, even a chess game with the lack of random factors and only a small number of possible actions at each stage is a problem that can’t be solved without using some heuristics (e.g. developing pawns in the early game). And if we take the real world, the situation is even worse… But more often than not, people underestimate the number of potential scenarios. And cause of that we make errors, blinded by the illusion of our planning ability. To fight this problem, the smartest people usually tend to think otherwise. They feel that they can’t know all the details. But if their decisions are made for a really strong reason and there are only so many small counter-arguments not to do so, it is probably worth it. Nassim Taleb perfectly described the underlying principle: «If you have more than one reason to do something (choose a doctor or veterinarian, hire a gardener or an employee, marry a person, go on a trip), just don’t do it. It does not mean that one reason is better than two, just that by invoking more than one reason you are trying to convince yourself to do something. Obvious decisions (robust to error) require no more than a single reason» Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb The same idea I met while reading about the moment when Steve Jobs was deciding whether or not to sell Pixar to Disney. From the perspective of the prosperity of both companies separately and together, there were a lot of reasons not to do that but only a strong one to continue this deal: in his eyes, Disney was also a great company and he understood that without Pixar Disney will probably stop to exist. He didn’t want the world to lose such a great company. Of course, there is a bigger context of this story: Steve Jobs already returned back to Apple and from a rational point of view it was obvious to sell Pixar to some good hands. That’s why the only question that mattered in this story was whether or not Disney was a good hand for that. That’s not the line of thought you can expect from ordinary people, right? Any other factors didn’t play a crucial role in this story, even together. Many other great people I have the pleasure of working with also tend to this line of thinking. Probably you’ve also met some of them. But they obviously couldn’t formalize this sort of thinking, couldn’t explain it. Especially all the great founders & businessmen use this framework on an intuitive level. That’s why many smart people who can think really fast usually neglect this line of thinking at first. P.S. Decoding the Crypto Trader’s Mind: Leveraging Behavioral Economics for Smarter Trading Decisions.

In my previous post , I explained that some parts of a monolith are pretty stable and only the fast-changing parts are worth being "chopped." I turned the post into a talk and presented it at several conferences. I think it's pretty well received; I believe it's because most developers understand, or have direct experience, that microservices are not a good fit for traditional organizations, as per . Chopping the Monolith Conway's Law In the talk, I use an e-commerce webapp as an example. The pricing needs to change often due to business requirements, and it is a good candidate for chopping. The idea is first to expose pricing as an HTTP route. At this point, we can configure the Gateway to forward pricing calls with the cart payload to another component, , a  Function-as-a-Service. e.g. I expected a lot of pushback because we now need twice the number of HTTP calls. Given that the client is remote, it has a non-trivial performance cost. It has yet to be mentioned, but I'd like to offer another better-designed approach today. In particular, we can move the forked calls from the client to the API Gateway. We still have twice the number of calls, but since the Gateway is much closer to the upstream(s), the performance hit is much lower. No one will be surprised I'm using for my demos. It implements a plugin architecture and comes bundled with plugins that address most possible requirements. We need a plugin that pipes an HTTP call's output to another HTTP call's input. It's not part of the current out-of-the-box plugin portfolio; however, when no plugin fits your requirement, you can develop your own - or find one that does. My colleague Zeping Bai has developed such a plugin: apisix-pipeline-request-plugin README When handling client requests, the plugin will iterate through the nodes section of the configuration, requesting them in turn. In the first request, it will send the complete method, query, header, and body of the client request, while in subsequent requests it will only send the last response with the POST method. The successful response will be recorded in a temporary variable, and each request in the loop will get the response body of the previous request and overwrite the response body of the current request. When the loop ends, the response body will be sent to the client as the final response. -- apisix-pipeline-request-plugin README The final sequence is the following: Note that the consumes the input. As we want to return all the necessary data, we must return both the cart lines and the price in the payload. The Red Queen Effect is a concept that describes the phenomenon that organisms must constantly adapt, evolve, and compete in order to survive in a dynamic environment where their enemies and competitors are also evolving. The RQE also applies to business, technology, and society. In today’s fast-paced world, staying ahead of the curve requires constant innovation, learning, and improvement. Otherwise, you’re going to fall behind and become obsolete. The RQE also applies to personal and professional development. It means that we have to keep running faster and faster just to stay in the same place. But we can use it as a catalyst for our growth and development by being adaptable, foresighted, and continuously learning. You’re running as fast as you can, but you’re not moving. You’re stuck in the same spot while the world around you changes at warp speed. I can imagine this resonates with a lot of you (as scary and unsettling as this concept is), especially with the advent of new technologies seemingly being discovered and improved upon daily (and sometimes hourly). This is a common feeling in the modern world. You feel like you’re falling behind while everyone else is racing ahead. You’re missing out on opportunities while others are seizing them. You feel like you’re irrelevant, while others are influential. And, as stressful as this may seem, there’s some truth to it. However, this feeling/phenomenon is not new. That’s how Alice (from Wonderland) felt in Lewis Carroll’s classic book, “Through the Looking Glass”. In Wonderland, she met the Red Queen. The context was that Alice was on a chessboard that was moving backward while she was running forward. The Red Queen told her: “Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” This concept/theory is actually coined the Red Queen Effect (RQE). It’s a concept further explored in evolutionary biology, coined by Leigh Van Valen in 1973. It means that organisms have to constantly adapt, evolve, and compete to survive in a changing environment where their enemies and competitors are also evolving. Similar to how Alice was running but getting nowhere on the Red Queen’s chessboard. However, the RQE is not just for nature. It’s for business, technology, and society, too. In today’s fast-paced world, you have to keep innovating, learning, and improving to stay ahead of the curve. Otherwise, you risk falling behind and becoming irrelevant. The Red Queen Effect in Nature Imagine you’re Alice, and you are running with the Red Queen on a huge chessboard. But no matter how fast you run, you are not moving forward. The chessboard is moving backward at the same speed as you running forward. If you were to power walk, jog, or walk, you’d start to fall behind. It’s like a treadmill, where you have to run just to stay in the same place. This is how nature works. It means that living things have to keep changing and improving just to survive. Because their enemies and rivals are also changing and improving, they’re all running on the same treadmill. You can see the RQE everywhere in nature. It’s why animals and plants are always competing and evolving. For example, frogs have to catch flies to eat, and flies have to escape frogs to live. So frogs develop better tongues and flies develop better wings. This is a never-ending race where no one can win. This is what Charles Darwin discovered when he wrote his famous book, "On the Origin of Species" in 1859. He saw that nature is not peaceful but harsh. He wrote: "The most adaptable to change is the one that survives, not the strongest or the smartest." This is the core of natural selection, the process of evolution. It means that living things that fit their environment better have a higher chance of living and having babies and passing on their good features to their babies. Those who fit their environment worse have a lower chance of living and having babies and leaving behind their bad features. Over time, this leads to the creation of new kinds of living things suited to their own places. The RQE is the reason why we have so many different and amazing life forms on Earth. It is also the reason why we have to keep running to stay alive. The Red Queen Effect in Business The RQE is not only a challenge for nature but also for business. In the business world, the environment is constantly changing. Technology, competition, regulation, and consumer preferences. To succeed in business, you have to keep innovating, learning, and improving. Otherwise, you risk falling behind and losing your market share. Here’s a great example. In 1962, Warren Buffett bought a controlling stake in Berkshire Hathaway, a textile company. No matter how much he invested, he could not keep up with the changing environment. He’s gone on record stating that the money he poured into the Textile company was the biggest investing mistake he’s ever made. He eventually shut down the textile operations in 1985 and focused on using Berkshire Hathaway as a holding company for his other investments. He learned from his mistake and applied the RQE to his investing strategy. His focus? Businesses that had a durable competitive advantage, such as strong brands, loyal customers, or high barriers to entry. Businesses that could adapt to change and innovate continuously, such as Apple, Amazon, and Netflix. He turned Berkshire Hathaway into one of the most successful and respected companies in the world. What’s the lesson? The RQE is a race you can’t win by running faster. You have to run smarter. The Red Queen Effect in Medicine The RQE doesn’t stop in business. It transcends medicine and health as well. The Emperor of All Maladies (Mukherjee) is a "biography" of cancer, covering the history of cancer treatment and research from ancient times to the present. It won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 2011 and was acclaimed by critics and audiences. One of the main themes of the book is the RQE in cancer treatment. Mukherjee shows how cancer is a constantly evolving and mutating disease that adapts to the various therapies and drugs that humans have developed to fight it. He writes: (Mukherjee 2010, p. 47). "Cancer is not a concentration camp, but it shares at least one trait with history's most tragic camps: an unceasing capacity to remember and propagate its own suffering. Cancer cells, unlike normal cells, can activate telomerase, an enzyme that allows them to preserve their chromosomes indefinitely. Cancer cells can thus defy the normal cycle of senescence and death. They can grow relentlessly, adaptively, and endlessly." The RQE in cancer treatment means that doctors and researchers have to keep running faster and faster, just to stay in the same place. They have to keep developing new drugs, new combinations, new strategies, and new technologies to keep up with the ever-changing nature of cancer. But outside of cancer, the RQE also applies to medical advancements in general, as well as technological innovations in other fields. Medical advancements are driven by the need to solve problems, improve outcomes, and enhance quality of life. But they also create new problems, new challenges, and new expectations. For example: The development of antibiotics revolutionized the treatment of infectious diseases but also led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which pose a serious threat to public health. The development of vaccines eradicated many deadly diseases but also raised ethical, social, and political issues, such as the anti-vaccination movement, the distribution of vaccines, and the protection of intellectual property rights. The development of organ transplantation saved many lives but also created a shortage of donors, a black market for organs, and a debate over the definition of death. The development of genetic engineering opened up new possibilities for diagnosis, prevention, and therapy but also raised questions about the safety, efficacy, and ethics of modifying the human genome. The development of artificial intelligence and machine learning enabled new applications and insights but also generated concerns about the impact on human autonomy, privacy, and employment. The RQE in medical advancements means that doctors and researchers have to keep innovating, learning, and improving to keep up with the changing needs and demands of patients, society, and the environment. Strategies to Outpace the Red Queen The RQE is not just a business problem. It’s a personal problem. It means we have to run faster and faster just to keep up. But speed is not enough. We need a strategy. We need three skills to run smarter in the RQE: : How to change with the times. How to be flexible, resilient, and open-minded. How to experiment, fail, and learn. How to pivot, scale, and diversify. Adaptability is how we survive. Adaptability : How to see the future. How to be proactive, strategic, and creative. How to spot trends, opportunities, and threats. How to plan and prepare. How to deliver value. Foresight is how we succeed. Foresight : How to learn new things. How to be curious, motivated, and self-directed. How to access, evaluate, and synthesize information. How to collaborate, communicate, and share knowledge. Continuous learning is how we grow. Continuous learning These skills are not either-or. They are all in. They help us stay ahead of the curve, not just by running faster but by running smarter. Some food for thought: : Netflix is a leader in the streaming industry, but it faces constant competition from rivals like Disney+, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max. To stay ahead, Netflix has to invest heavily in original content, technology, and marketing. It also has to adapt to different markets, regulations, and customer preferences. Netflix has to run smarter by leveraging its data, brand, and network effects. Netflix : Tesla is a pioneer in the electric vehicle industry, but it faces challenges from incumbents like Toyota, Volkswagen, and Ford. To maintain its edge, Tesla has to innovate constantly in battery, software, and design. It also has to deal with supply chain issues, safety concerns, and environmental impacts. Tesla has to run smarter by harnessing its vision, culture, and fan base. Tesla : You are a professional in a dynamic and competitive field, but you face threats from automation, globalization, and disruption. To advance your career, you have to update your skills, knowledge, and network. You also have to balance your work, life, and health. You have to run smarter by developing your adaptability, foresight, and continuous learning. You The RQE teaches us some important lessons: Change is inevitable and accelerating. We have to embrace it, not resist it. Speed is necessary but not sufficient. We have to be strategic, not reactive. Value is relative and dynamic. We have to create it, not capture it. The RQE is a race we can’t win by running faster. We have to run smarter. Getting Personal I do realize that, to this point, most of this article may seem a little bit doom and gloom, so I figured I’d leave you with a few points on how to see the RQE as a blessing, not a curse. Because I know some of you are thinking that the RQE is not just for nature and business. It’s for you and me. It means we have to run faster and faster just to keep up. But how do we do that? How do we use the RQE to grow and thrive? Well, it’s not easy, but it’s doable. It takes a mix of strategies and mindsets that can help us adapt, anticipate, and learn. Here are a few things that you can lean into that will help you overcome it (and candidly, make you a much stronger person/professional at the same time). : Know where you are and where you want to go. 1. Assess What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are your goals and dreams? What are the opportunities and threats around you? How are you doing and improving? By asking these questions, you can find your gaps and areas for improvement. You can also compare yourself with your peers and rivals and see how you stand out. This is the first step of self-awareness and self-improvement. : Make a plan for your growth and development. 2. Develop What are the skills and knowledge you need to learn or improve? What are the resources and tools you need to get or use? What are the actions and steps you need to do or follow? How will you track your progress and results? By answering these questions, you can create a roadmap for your growth and development. You can also set and goals and targets and measure your performance and outcomes. smart achievable : Do your plan and learn as you go. This means that you have to act on your plan and learn from your experience. 3. Execute and iterate You have to be consistent, disciplined, and focused. You also have to be flexible, agile, and responsive. You have to be open to feedback, criticism, and advice. You have to be willing to try, fail, and learn from mistakes. You have to be able to pivot, scale, and diversify when needed. By doing these things, you can do your plan and learn as you go. You can also adjust your plan and strategy as you learn and grow. This is the third step of self-regulation and self-optimization. These strategies can help you use the RQE to your advantage. They can help you not only keep up but get ahead in a world that’s always moving. We don’t have to be scared of the RQE. We can use it as a spark for our growth and development. We can use it as a push for our innovation and excellence. We can use it as a chance for our success and happiness. So, naturally, people have been looking for a viable alternative ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter. But no platform ( , , , to name a few) was able to achieve mass adoption, until… Mastodon BlueSky Cohost Threads is not run by Elon Musk Look, I get it, a Twitter alternative from Zuck ( with of his own) sounds a little lame. It’s not due to just that, all of Zuck’s fraud history with European regulators. BUT. The bar is so low right now. And love him or hate him, Zuck WHILE AND . Simply put, the bar for people to like a social media app in 2023 is just, “not run by Elon Musk.” That’s why some people rekindled their hope for Twitter after learning that its new CEO will be , who is very respected in the advertising industry. Others go to great length to set up a server for their Mastodon instance (I haven’t). another billionaire multiple baggages even available in the EU right now knows how to run social media firing a lot of his staff not scaring over half of his advertisers Linda Yakarino Lately, Zuck has been entertaining the idea of challenging Musk in (lol). I think that was the first time since Cambridge Analytica that a meaningfully larger number of people might actually root for Zuck instead of Musk. It does take a worse billionaire like Musk to make Zuck look civil and worth rooting for. a cage fight The Metaverse is still a long shot Zuck, too, was fueled by desperation. made it clear that gone are the days of Instagram’s purchase (imho, Zuck’s best acquisition to date). With intesifying regulators’ scrutiny from all sides, it seems that he’s no longer allowed to gain monopoly on social media by simply buying up competitions. . He needed to hedge new bets, considering Facebook growth was severely capped, with no end in sight. The UK’s decision to block Meta’s acquisition of Giphy The UK specifically cited the fact that Meta already controlled over 50% of the advertising market in the UK as the reason to block Giphy acquisition In October 2021, Zuck announced the relaunch of Facebook as Meta (our parody ), . Ever since, he has burned billion of dollars into this pipedream ( , $10 billions in 2022, and planning to be about $100 billions over the next couple of years). here announcing that Facebook Instagram, and Whatsapp, are just products belonging to the parent company Meta reportedly Unfortunately, the Metaverse had not yet to pan out the way he hoped. . People’s avatars look awkward, cartoonish, and limited, nothing like the person they attempted to represent (see some ). The remains quite niched and largely unfriendly to the general public. Unlike the cash counter that is advertising money from Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, Zuck’s Metaverse vision seemed to be quite far-off, and not exactly what the people want, or need, right now. Expensive though it seemed, this move by Apple might effectively one-up and undercut Meta’s market share into AR/VR. And of course, the growth of generative AI, most notably with chat GPT, has very little to do with Zuck’s metaverse pipe dream. launch the Apple Vision Pro Threads is shamelessly Twitter-like, and the people running it are the first to admit it If you are one of the that are reportedly active on Instagram in 2023, signing up for threads literally takes 3 seconds, as you can sign in with your existing Instagram handle. Once there, you have the option to import your Instagram bio, profile picture, and link. You also have the option to follow anyone whom you already followed on Instagram, even before they join Threads. That way, once they do join, you would already be one of their followers. A “pre-follow” if you will. 1,4 billions users From there, it’s basically Twitter, without the baggage and all the added features. Adam Moserri, , and multiple public threads on , accredits Twitter for pioneering the “reply format”, which gives the same design treatment for comment as it does for the original post, creating a natural "public conversation”. This is vastly different than commenting on Youtube, Facebook, or Instagram, which gets a “second tiered” design treatment. in an interview his own account The things Threads does have: 500 character limit for each post Ability to retweet (called “repost”), and quote tweet (called “quote”) Ability to comment/reply A like counter, and a reply counter (both can be hidden) Search for users’ handle Way to go back and forth seamlessly between Threads and Instagram. My favorite is the “add to story” button that shares Tweet in a beautiful pre-designed manner As mentioned above, ability to bring most of your Instagram followers with you And of course, a lot of users already, since it’s basically Instagram but “not Twitter” Twitter The things it doesn’t have (I shared these in my first threads ): here A personalized or even just chronological newsfeed that surface only the people you follow An inbox (post all on main, i guess, lol) Ability to switch between multiple accounts Ability to search for anything else that’s not a handle Elon Musk =)) The weird quirks: Threads algorithm seems very random and buggy right now. I was reading an interesting thread, and the feed just refreshes itself. Since I cannot search and don’t remember the handle, that content is now gone forever from my feed. Annoying buzzing and endless notifications as default for some users Owned by . Meta In general, I don’t think it’s perfect, but I already like and use it way more than Twitter. And I assume a non-trivial percentage of Instagram avid userbase will feel the same. Threads might save Zuck. But it’s too early to tell. (or, in Musk’s word, “ ”). We’ll see how the case go. What they do then, how careful they are with users data & integration (under extreme scrutiny from both regulators and reporters), what features they will add or kill, and most importantly, what users will they be able to convert to long term users, will determine the future of this app, and by extension, the legacy of Zuck. For now, I know that I have nothing to lose by posting on Threads directly to my Instagram stories, as I’m already too addicted to Instagram.
