How the Rad Lab at MIT was more important than Los Alamos in defeating the Nazis; Radar Won the War, the Atom Bomb Ended It Most of us have heard the story of the Manhattan Project, which was the gargantuan effort to take a scientific theory (a sustained nuclear chain reaction) and turn it into a reality (the atomic bomb) for the war effort.  In one of the largest scientific mobilizations ever, a number of physicists and other scientists were shipped off to Los Alamos, New Mexico in one of the most secret labs in the nation. The story has been told in many books and movies; my personal favorite is , an account that stretches from Leo Szilard’s initial idea, to Oppenheimer and General Groves setting up the lab on an old boys ranch in New Mexico. Day One That secret lab eventually built both a uranium and a plutonium bomb (nicknamed “Fat Man” and “Little Boy”).  The effort actually went well beyond the Los Alamos laboratory – for one thing they needed enough purified materials (Uranium 235 and Plutonium, both of which had to be separated); this involved the efforts of labs in Oak Ridge Tennessee, Berkeley (under the direction of Nobel prize winner Ernest Lawrence whose cyclotrons played an important role) and dozens of other locations. The reason many of these scientists participated was because they were afraid the Nazis would develop the bomb first. Though every schoolboy knows that the atomic bomb helped end the war, it seems like the Japanese may have been on their last legs anyways and Germany had already surrendered by this time. The real impact of the Manhattan project and nuclear power came after the war; in the Cold War and the nuclear arms race (which involved more destructive Hydrogen bombs). On the other hand, most schoolchildren (including most MIT students) don’t know the full story of the Rad Lab, another laboratory that had an equal, if not greater, impact on the outcome of World War II. This was the “radiology lab” at MIT which was housed in a “temporary building”, called building 20. In this lab, many of the nation's leading scientists perfected radar, building it from a crude tool of bouncing very large (and imprecise) radio waves into the highly accurate system for tracking airborne and seaborne objects (using centimeter length waves) which we think of today as a staple of all air and sea travel. Radar stands for , and while its history goes back to the nineteenth century when Hertz bounced radio waves off of metallic substances, it was the efforts of the Rad Lab scientists that turned it into the must-have, reliable tool it is for today's military and civilians. RAdio Detection And Ranging I actually got to know this building well - I spent many late nights there working on my thesis when I was a student at MIT; While I knew that the ratty old building had something to do with radar and world war two, I didn’t know the full history until recently. It turns out that the Rad Lab was a continuation of the work of a privately owned predecessor lab, known as the Loomis Laboratory. In her excellent book, nnet Conant, writes of this private laboratory that was set up Alfred Loomis, a wall street banker who became one of the wealthiest businessmen in the country (and later, a respected scientist in his own right). Tuxedo Park, Je Loomis started funding scientific projects at his private lab and made many discoveries related to radio waves and microwaves, including the first EEGs, with the help of professional scientists like Robert Wood (From Johns Hopkins), George Kistiakowsky (who would play an important role in both radar and nuclear weapons development), and Ernest Lawrence, whose cyclotron Loomis helped fund and get off the ground. As Germany started to attack the British Isles  (well before the US had entered the war), Loomis and others saw the importance of helping England hold off the German attacks using innovations in science. The German U-boats (submarines) were sinking British American ships in the Atlantic, and the German bombers had shifted from daytime to nighttime bombing of London, making it very difficult for the Brits to defend themselves. The development of radar proceeded quickly during this time only because men like Loomis were pushing its development from a theory, incorporating some of the top findings from the British physics community, who sent a mission to Washington in 1940 to share information with "the yanks" since they were on the verge of being defeated by the Nazis. The US military, it turns out, was hesitant to use this untested technology (as they were initially hesitant about the atomic bomb, thinking it was a weapon for the “next war”). Loomis, Vannevar Bush (who was head of the Carnegie Institute), Karl Compton (President of MIT), and  many others were put into a committee called NDRC (National Defense Research Committee) by FDR.  This is the kind of bipartisanship we don't see much of today, since many of these men were not Democrats nor supporters of FDR. The NRDC was setup specifically to oversee scientific developments that could impact the war effort – and two of the main committees were the “radar committee” and the “uranium committee”.  Since WWI, which was the first mechanized war, forward thinking members of the scientific and political establishment had come to realize that science and technology could be the decisive factor in winning wars. Like many accomplishments in our nations history, much of the technology developed in WWII was from fear that others (namely, the Germans at thisz time), might get there first. According to , Loomis was instrumental not just in setting up this lab but in pushing its research forward, even before there was adequate funding from the government. He did this by using his own funds and cajoling his contacts in industry to develop prototypes when formal funding hadn’t been approved or before the military had even agreed to use the equipment. Tuxedo Park If Loomis hadn’t done this, it’s very possible that the radar advancement would've gotten caught up in government bureaucracy , and radar development may not have happened fast enough to help England (and later the Americans) in the course of the war. In the book, Conant tells the story of Loomis, Lawrence, and many other prominent scientists and their impact on the development of this revolutionary technology in detail. While some primitive radar existed in both Britain and the US before the war, the real issues were in miniaturization  - both in getting the size of the waves down (for better accuracy)  and the size of the senders and receivers so they could become airborne and practical (originally radar was not very accurate and required separate sending and receiving devices, which were very large antennas). It turns out the British had one part of the answer, which was a magnetron, and the physicists that descended on Cambridge, MA at the Rad Lab en masse solved many of the practical problems of how to send and receive radio waves from the same device ,and came up with dozens of miniaturized models of this new technology . The government funding finally came through and this temporary building they had set up at MIT, building 20 (it never had a “real” name because it was meant to only be temporary) became a full-fledged operation churning out one advancement after the next. The lab kept expanding as Loomis and his team kept coming up with new applications – airborne radar to help bombers locate bombing targets, airborne radar for submarine detection, which allowed England to stop the bleeding of ships from the German submarine menace, and airborne bomber to bomber navigation which played a critical role in reducing the damage done to England by German’s formidable air force. Before airborne radar was a reality,  clunky ground-based radar was used to determine the approximate location of the German incoming bombers and then these coordinates were transmitted verbally to British pilots, which made it pretty difficult for them to intercept the German pilots. The innovations in the Rad Lab were critical to stopping the bombing of London and the UK by intercepting first German aircraft, and later in the war, the other deadly new weapon, the guided missile (or V-1 missiles that were shot by Germany at the UK). The temporary "building 20" at MIT  where the Rad Lab lived Loomis was able to attract some of the top physicists to the lab because of his association with men like Ernest Lawrence, who earned the Nobel prize because of the cycolotron Loomis helped him build. This lab wasn’t technically under the jurisdiction of the military (unlike the Los Alamos lab during the war), and as a result, it was a free-wheeling, skunkworks like operation where the scientsts were free to "invent" whatever they thought they might need. This was partly because the military didn’t realize it needed radar until after the US was dragged into the war and air power was finally recognized as the "new reality" of war.  If anything, the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 showed the military just how vulnerable US forces were to air power. Although airplanes  had been present in WWI (the flying “aces”), it didn't become the decisive factor in warfare it's considered today until  the second World War. Without developments related to radar at the Rad Lab, the Allies would have  been at the mercy of the German war machine, which in many ways was ahead of the Allies at the beginning of the war. It is a wonder that the Nazis, who were so great at creating offensive weapons, didn’t get to have this advantage first.  Without the work of the Rad Lab,it’s very possible that the Nazis would have defeated Britain and taken over the UK before Pearl Harbor, which means we might be in a very different world today (If you want to see what this might be like, read Philip K Dick’s Man in the High Castle, or watch the Amazon TV series)! When the military finally started to take the uranium bomb idea more seriously (in the parallel Uranium committe of the NDRC), Loomis and Lawrence played key roles, helping to recruit many prominent physicists from the Rad Lab to the Manhattan project.  For example, one of Lawrence’s key proteges  from Berkeley, Luis Alverez, played a critical role in the development of many of the radar systems that went into production. This led  to a new billion-dollar industry when the United States entered the war with the Army and the Navy realizing the new reality and asking for radar systems on .  Alvarez himself would later go on to be part of the Manhattan project and receive the Nobel prize in physics. every single ship and every single airplane Similarly, another of Lawrence’s apprentices at Berkeley, Robert Oppenheimer (known as “Oppie” to scientists) went on to become the director of the Los Alamos lab which produced the atomic bomb. Since most of the basic research around radar had been done at this point, and the Rad Lab was so well funded, others were able to take over and finish production models after key physicists went to Los Alamos to help solve bomb-related problems. The lab was able to take the initial research and crank out all types of anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, anti-ship and anti-missile technology, not to mention the precursor to today’s GPS systems, all by using radio waves. After Germany was defeated and radar was in broad use by Allied forces, the decision was finally made to shut down the Rad Lab on August 5, 1945, since the technology was now in the hands of commercial manufacturers. This decision was followed with a number of press releases and announcements about the important accomplishments of this lab and the scientists who had been there in the war, but these were upstaged by the momentous news of the atomic bomb drop the next day. For example, according to Conant, Time Magazine was going to have a cover story about the work of the lab on radar and its decisive role in helping England stand up against the (seemingly) overwhelming numbers of German submarines and bombers. After the war, MIT chose not to tear down this temporary building right away as a testament to how important the Rad Lab had been to the war. When I was a student there in the late 1980s/early 1990s, I remember being surprised at how often, when I wanted to find out about some new lab or program, it would be housed in this shoddy old building. It turned out that it continued to be a “skunkworks” type building for MIT, housing new labs and departments for many years, ranging from Minsky’s work on linguistics, to the Experimental Study Group, to Doc Edgerton’s strobe lights.  Basically, something that didn’t have budget or office space elsewhere ended up in this “temporary” building.   It was finally torn down in 1998 for the new Stata center, which houses the computer science department at MIT. Conant writes near the end of Tuxedo Park: “The men who worked on the atomic bomb were hailed as heroes, and countless books and Hollywood movies would recount their exploits, while the daring and inventive minds who create radar were large forgotten… Only the Rad Lab veterans knew better, knew that if radar had not kept the Germans from defeating  England, the war might have been over before America entered the contest.  Everyone who had worked at the laboratory understood the decisive role their deadly devices. Had played in speeding the day of victory, and it was a reflected in a remark by DuBridge (later President of CalTech, who was director of the Rad Lab) that became something of an  unofficial slogan, their badge of honor: " Radar won the war; the atom bomb ended it.

The Other Secret Science Lab That Helped Win WWII

Gone were the days when it is a novelty to have pen pals. It is easy to see the benefits of having an interconnected world from a social standpoint. But in the global trade industry, the internet has no impact on the physical transportation of goods worldwide. The internet has made ordering goods, supplies, materials from various countries much easier. As a result, there is a strong demand for both global seaborne and airborne trade. Given the increasing growth in the number of ships and flights, aviation and maritime safety became a fundamental concern. Could find a place in both maritime and aviation industry? Blockchain technology Let’s first take a look at both the aviation and maritime industry. Shipping and Maritime Industry Shipping is essential to the supply chain of numerous industries as it accounts for approximately 90% of all global trade. To all involved businesses and parties, any incident at sea results in large financial losses. Should there be any severe accidents, the risk of lives lost exists if the disaster is not attended to in a timely manner. According to UNCTAD, the number of ships registered has been rising rapidly since the turn of the millennia. The maritime industry showing no signs of slowing down. Therefore, we can expect an increase in the number of ships. In the region of South China Sea, Indonesia, and the Philippines, reported that from 2007 to 2017, more than 252 shipping incidents occurred — the largest number of incidents by region in the world. In 2017 alone, there were 30 shipping losses in this region, the top rank in terms of shipping casualties and incidents globally. Losses included actual total losses of ships as well as constructive total losses recorded for vessels of 100 gross tons or over. Allianz Global Corporate Report The Aviation Industry There are currently at least 2,000 airlines operating more than 23,000 aircraft which provides services to over 3,700 airports. The growth of world air travel has increased at least 5% per year over the past 30 years and the annual growth in air travel is assumed to be twice the annual growth in the US GDP. The annual growth in global air traffic passenger demand has been positive from 2006 to 2018. Only in . In 2017, the world’s airlines carried at least 4.1 billion passengers and created 65 million jobs to support aviation and related tourism. Around 10.2 million people within the 65 million jobs working directly in the aviation industry. Globally, the total number of planes, including freighter and passenger planes, is estimated to be 21,453 and is projected to grow to 47,987 by 2037. 2009 did the industry saw the worst demand decline in history The Importance of Data Recording Instruments We have touched on the high growth rate in both aviation and maritime industries. With an increasing amount of sea and air traffic daily, it is impossible to avoid accidents and near misses. This also includes unforeseeable events such as the two flights from Malaysia airline (MH17 and MH370). Should these unforeseeable events happen in remote locations, be it in the ocean or unpopulated regions, locating the wreckage can be a major hurdle. Aviation (Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder) The aviation industry cannot downplay the importance of preventing and investigating given the meteoric growth in the number of flights. Most aircraft carry one or both of the following flight recorder devices. These devices are the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR). The flight data recorder is more commonly known as the “black box”. The Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention) regulates the use of FDR and CVR. The parameters the FDR must record include the flight path, speed, altitude, engine power and configuration of lift and drag devices. However, it also depends on the takeoff mass and type of aircraft. Further, the FDR must be able to resist fire, shock impact, crushing force, fluid and water immersion, penetration resistance and hydrostatic pressure. Maritime (Voyage Data Recorder) The International Maritime Organization (IMO) enacted which requires the majority of vessels to install a Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). The resolution was enacted to aid in the investigation of marine accidents. These devices monitor and record vital sensory information from sensors aboard the vessel in a continuous loop. Resolution MSC.333(90) (IMO Resolution) Whenever a maritime incident occurs, the VDR will be extracted and analyzed to discover the underlying causes and prevent recurrence. However, the VDR faces certain drawbacks — the main one being the requirement of physical access to the device before data can be retrieved. This proves to be a crucial challenge as there exist instances when the VDR is irrecoverable. The Problems Faced by both industries Human Error consistently estimate that around 80% of causes in marine accidents are attributable to the human factor. A report by Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty highlighted crew negligence and inadequate vessel maintenance as two increasing areas of risk. Studies Physical contact required As a physical object, the data recording instruments require physical contact in order to retrieve it should an accident happen. Installing location transmitters makes the retrieval process much easier. However, the signal has an effective range of only a few miles. Although, it still requires search teams to be almost directly on top of the wreckage to be able to identify it. Never 100% retrievable The recovery process can be arduous and expensive. In some instances, finding and retrieving the remains of planes and ships were impossible. These challenges can include natural factors such as the sheer vastness of the ocean and depth of the seabed. Also, technical issues where ping signals are only available for a month and within a small effective radius. This requires extensive manual search and rescue efforts that are costly and time-consuming. Tampering Insurance claim processes can face several issues as well especially in a non-fatal example such as a near-collision between two ships. The data recorded by the VDR is one of the data sources used to determine liability. However, malicious actors could find ways and means to tamper with the data or device in a bid to reduce their liability. The tampering of the VDR is a serious problem. Here are several high-profile case examples where tampering has resulted in serious consequences: , two Italian marines aboard the Italian oil tanker MV Enrica Lexie fired upon and killed two Indian fishermen on St Antony off the coast of Kerala, India. On 15 February 2012 , the Singaporean cargo ship MV Prabhu Daya was involved in a collision off the coast of Kerala, India. In the investigation that followed, one of the crew was found to have inserted a USB flash drive into the VDR which resulted in a rewriting and loss of crucial data. Further, the software was found to have been infected with malware. On 12 March 2012 t, investigators concluded that the CVR could have been disabled by pulling out the circuit breaker that is connected to the CVR. On the SilkAir Flight 185 acciden Cesar Llanto disappeared from and Hector Collado was found dead on board two weeks later ‘death ship’ in 2012 So how can Blockchain help solve these problems? Blockchain’s traceability and tamper-proof nature provide a direct solution to the problems discussed above. Anti-Tampering In a , I discussed the possibilities of blockchain being hacked by Quantum Computing. It is the power of millions of users of blockchain that makes it immune to hacking. In any case, centralized legacy systems and databases are more likely to be cracked, altered and data misused than a (decentralized) Distributed Ledger Technology. Having a system that provides real-time location data can be immensely helpful as it reduces (or completely eradicates) the tampering possibilities to the black boxes. Should the global transport infrastructure adopts this system, it could harness the potential of blockchain technology. recent article No Physical Contact Needed Installing a satellite that records real-time location data can prove to be a game-changer. The data can be remotely access which makes physical contact obsolete. Enhance Retrievability Using Satellite Locating The primary problem with current black box recovery is locating it. With a satellite, its last location data can be transmitted and be recorded on a blockchain almost immediately. Thus, making the process of locating the black boxes far easier. However, it is important to also note that, if the data has already been recorded on the blockchain, then there should be no need to retrieve the black boxes. Is there already a blockchain solution out there? However, there is a company that caught my attention in the last few weeks. No, there isn’t. Enter , a Singapore-based company that is attempting to solve the challenges of retrieving black box data. Combining the benefits of key technologies like artificial intelligence and big data analytics, Blocbox is creating the world’s first blockchain protocol for aviation and maritime safety. Blocbox The company is building a physical and lightweight device called the BlocBox Transmitter. This device shall be connected to existing recording instruments on planes and ships. It will continuously copy and transmit recorded data. One good thing about the device is that it does not replace existing instruments. According to their whitepaper, they are also developing a satellite that will solely be used to ensure the constant transmission of data between relevant parties. Blocbox is relatively new so it will be interesting to see how they progress in the next few years. In theory, their proposed solutions address the key issues currently faced in the industries. The Blockchain Revolution Implementing blockchain technology certainly looks promising in both the aviation and shipping industry. However, it is important to remember that we are still at an early-stage of blockchain solutions. The majority of companies offering blockchain solutions are still developing. It is definitely an exciting period to be alive, watching the mass majority adopting emerging technologies. How Blockchain will help the Aviation and Maritime Industry

Around 90% of globally traded goods are handled by the sea shipping industry each year, making it one of the world’s biggest industries. The cornerstone document facilitating this industry is the Bill of Lading (B/L), which confers proof of ownership of the goods in question as they pass along the chain from exporter to shipper to importer. The document is issued by the shipper as they take possession of their cargo, and sent by express courier service to the exporter. When the importer makes payment the exporter will courier the document to the importer, who can then use it to claim ownership of the cargo once it reaches it’s intended port. Being a paper-based system it suffers from several disadvantages: Cost — With seaborne trade volumes surpassing 10 billion tons the costs associated with this system add up. Printing costs alone are estimated to be around USD 2 billion, with another USD 5 billion going to couriers of the documents. Lost contracts — As paper contracts are lost or stolen, the process for issuing new ones is both cumbersome and time consuming. It can also lead to increased costs for demurrage or late arrival of shipments. Time consuming — The average B/L document gets sent by express courier 3 times. This means that the total time taken for a B/L to travel from issuer to final recipient is 5–10 days. CargoX are developing the platform and protocols to manage bills of lading electronically, by tethering them to the Ethereum blockchain. Using their smart contracts, shipping logistics will be done instantaneously and without using paper. The potential savings for the industry, both in deferred costs and time saved, are significant. CargoX are also releasing a crypto-currency, the CXO, to grant access to the system and to be used as payment within the CargoX framework. The CXO tokens are fully ERC-20 compliant. They have also developed a decentralized application (B/L dApp) that allows licensed users to issue the CargoX B/L smart contracts. The full contracts will be stored using encrypted decentralized storage, and referenced in additions to the Ethereum blockchain. The issuing and transferring ownership of CargoX smart contracts will be paid for using CXO, which acts as the gas powering the CargoX ecosystem. The CXO tokens are required to gain access to the system, and can be used for payments within the framework. Both issuing and archiving smart B/L contracts will require CXO tokens, and as the network grows it can be used for additional services. CargoX will act as the service provider for the ecosystem. They will approve carriers as issuers of smart B/L contracts, and define the protocol rules governing the contracts. They will also act as dispute intermediary. For it’s services, CargoX will be paid in CXO which they can transact on the open market. Other applications As the network of shippers using CargoX B/L contracts grows, other services needed for the industry can be developed, most notably for handling Letters of Credit (L/C). CargoX are developing a smart L/C dApp that will allow for the money transfers involved in shipping to be handled by the same infrastructure as the smart L/B contracts. The need for electronic Bill of Lading contracts grew out of the developers experience with 45HC.com, an aggregator of shipping rates from several providers. Linking the CargoX ecosystem to industry platforms like 45HC will allow for buying and selling of free shipping space using CXO. CargoX will also prepare standardized APIs and SDKs for seamless integration with the B/L X protocol. This will incentivize industry participants such as banks, insurance companies and shippers to form smart contracts for their own products that are compatible with the CargoX infrastructure and can interact with the CargoX B/L eXchange protocol. Conclusion, Software and Data, Acknowledgements, and References 4. Conclusion We have presented our design for an introductory course to AI and software engineering. The course involves group project-based learning and gamification through competition-based learning. The results of the course suggest that both project-based learning and gamification help motivate students and create a better learning experience through peer-based learning and the intrinsic motivation created by friendly competition. We wish to conduct a formal teaching assessment campaign before next year’s edition of the course to confirm what our informal assessment has suggested about the students’ highly positive sentiment towards this course.
