CARNEY, Circuit Judge: Microsoft Corporation appeals from orders of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York denying its motion to quash a warrant (“Warrant”) issued under § 2703 of the Stored Communications Act (“SCA” or the “Act”), 18 U.S.C. §§ 2701 et seq., and holding Microsoft in contempt of court for refusing to execute the Warrant on the government’s behalf.  The Warrant directed Microsoft to seize and produce the contents of an e‐mail account that it maintains for a customer who uses the company’s electronic communications services.  A United States magistrate judge (Francis, M.J.) issued the Warrant on the government’s application, having found probable cause to believe that the account was being used in furtherance of narcotics trafficking.  The Warrant was then served on Microsoft at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft produced its customer’s non‐content information to the government, as directed.  That data was stored in the United States.  But Microsoft ascertained that, to comply fully with the Warrant, it would need to access customer content that it stores and maintains in Ireland and to import that data into the United States for delivery to federal authorities.  It declined to do so.  Instead, it moved to quash the Warrant.  The magistrate judge, affirmed by the District Court (Preska, C.J.), denied the motion to quash and, in due course, the District Court held Microsoft in civil contempt for its failure. Microsoft and the government dispute the nature and reach of the Warrant that the Act authorized and the extent of Microsoft’s obligations under the instrument.  For its part, Microsoft emphasizes Congress’s use in the Act of the term “warrant” to identify the authorized instrument.  Warrants traditionally carry territorial limitations:   United States law enforcement officers may be directed by a court‐issued warrant to seize items at locations in the United States and in United States‐controlled areas, see Fed. R. Crim. P. 41(b), but their authority generally does not extend further. The government, on the other hand, characterizes the dispute as merely about “compelled disclosure,” regardless of the label appearing on the instrument.  It maintains that “similar to a subpoena, [an SCA warrant] requir[es] the recipient to deliver records, physical objects, and other materials to the government” no matter where those documents are located, so long as they are subject to the recipient’s custody or control.  Gov’t Br. at 6.  It relies on a collection of court rulings construing properly‐ served subpoenas as imposing that broad obligation to produce without regard to a document’s location.  E.g., Marc Rich & Co., A.G. v. United States, 707 F.2d 663 (2d Cir. 1983). For the reasons that follow, we think that Microsoft has the better of the argument.  When, in 1986, Congress passed the Stored Communications Act as part of the broader Electronic Communications Privacy Act, its aim was to protect user privacy in the context of new technology that required a user’s interaction with a service provider.  Neither explicitly nor implicitly does the statute envision the application of its warrant provisions overseas.  Three decades ago, international boundaries were not so routinely crossed as they are today, when service providers rely on worldwide networks of hardware to satisfy users’ 21st–century demands for access and speed and their related, evolving expectations of privacy. Rather, in keeping with the pressing needs of the day, Congress focused on providing basic safeguards for the privacy of domestic users.  Accordingly, we think it employed the term “warrant” in the Act to require pre‐disclosure scrutiny of the requested search and seizure by a neutral third party, and thereby to afford heightened privacy protection in the United States.  It did not abandon the instrument’s territorial limitations and other constitutional requirements.  The application of the Act that the government proposes ― interpreting “warrant” to require a service provider to retrieve material from beyond the borders of the United States ―would require us to disregard the presumption against extraterritoriality that the Supreme Court re‐stated and emphasized in Morrison v. National Australian Bank Ltd., 561 U.S. 247 (2010) and, just recently, in RJR Nabisco, Inc. v. European Cmty., 579 U.S. __, 2016 WL 3369423 (June 20, 2016).  We are not at liberty to do so. We therefore decide that the District Court lacked authority to enforce the Warrant against Microsoft.  Because Microsoft has complied with the Warrant’s domestic directives and resisted only its extraterritorial aspects, we REVERSE the District Court’s denial of Microsoft’s motion to quash, VACATE its finding of civil contempt, and REMAND the cause with instructions to the District Court to quash the Warrant insofar as it directs Microsoft to collect, import, and produce to the government customer content stored outside the United States. And dotData is a leading provider or data science automation solutions, we have largely broadly speaking to customer types that we tend to target, experienced assigned teams primarily in larger organizations that are looking to automate the feature engineering part of their work. And the other one are more companies that are just getting started in the world of predictive analytics and in the world of data science, and are looking for automation solutions to try and empower non-data scientists in the process of building machine learning models and data science processes integrated to do predictive analytics. Walter: Awesome, fantastic. Well, thank you so much for joining me today. It’s a pleasure to have you here. And I’m really curious to know like when and how to dotData first stop? Sam: Yeah, so great question. So actually, the dotData story goes back quite a ways. Ryohei Fujimaki the CEO and founder of dotData, is a former employee of NEC in Japan. So he was actually what’s known as an NEC fellow Research Fellow. Now, there haven’t been that many in the history of the company, and he sees quite an old company goes back well over 100 years. And I forget the exact number, I don’t want to lie to you. But I know that, you know, there’s been very few NEC research fellows in the history of the company, he was the youngest one ever in the history of the company. And he was part of their data science team, and pretty much trend data, their data science organization from a services perspective, right. So they would do project based work going to accounts. And the idea behind dotData actually originated. Through the course of his experience with NEC, one of the things that he consistently kept noticing was that his team of data, scientists would always spend an inordinate amount of time on specific parts of the data science process. And getting a little bit into the technical weeds here. But there’s one part of specialty known as feature engineering, which is really the most time consuming the most manual part of process. And he kept seeing that they would literally be spending months on the feature engineering process. And they would still be at a point where they hadn’t even played with any machine learning algorithms yet to figure out what the model should look like. And you know, that’s obviously an aha moment, at some point that tells you there’s something there. So there’s a need here, there’s automation could perhaps solve that problem. And that’s where the idea behind dotData originated in the company was founded as a spin off from NEC Corporation in 2018. In Japan, and so originally born in Japan, but fully headquarter nine, United States, we have all of our headquarters, if you have staff and pretty distributed company. We’re worldwide we have people in Europe, we have people in Japan, with people in the United States. And that brings us to where we are today. Walter: Awesome. That’s a fantastic success story. And I’m also very curious to know what is the story behind the name dotData because for our listeners, it’s spelled like dot d o t, but with a lowercase d, and then data with a capital D right after it. Where did that come from? Sam: Great question. So the original inspiration behind the name dotData really comes from, you know, one of the ideas that they were the group of people to found that a company was toying with was, you know, we’re talking like, probably when this idea was first being kicked around 2016 2017. So there were a lot of conversations in the world going on about data and the volume of data and how much data was being generated around the world on a daily basis. And it sort of dawned on them, you know, the previous iteration of the internet, so to speak, in the 1990s, and the 2000s. Were all about dotnet. Right? And the network, and they thought, well, the next iteration of the world is really going to be about data. So that data, so instead of.net dot data. So that was the original intent behind the dotData name. Walter: Okay, yeah, that makes sense with a lot more clarity. With that in mind. I also really do love the alliteration of it the D D, the dot data, it’s got a really nice sound to it when you say Sam: Yeah it is a memorable name, and it’s, it’s easy to mark it. Walter: Yeah, yeah, I completely get that. And I also want to know, like, in November last year, you folks there at dotData published an article called what is predictive data mining? Obviously, I would highly recommend listeners go check it out. But while you’re here, like could you give us a brief overview regarding what predictive data mining is? Sam: Sure, absolutely. So obviously, you know, from a perspective of the audience, those that are not familiar with it, you know, you may have heard of it in different terminology may have heard of referred to as predictive analytics, predictive data mining data mining by itself, technically, they’re not quite the same thing, if you really want to split hair, but for, you know, sort of a broad audience, predictive data mining and predictive analytics are really about leveraging historical data that you have in your organization. You know, for example, a good use case might be in marketing, you might want to predict behavior of visitors on your website for a shopping cart, right? And you have historical data about, you know, what are the actions that certain people take before they purchase a specific product. And you want to use that data, you want to mine that data, and use very specific techniques and algorithms things like and you know, decision tree analysis or rule induction, clustering, outlier detection and other types of data mining techniques, to identify the patterns, determine, you know, sort of visit the insights, part of predictive analytics, build those insights. These are also sometimes referred to as features in the world of machine learning, but figure out the insights that tell you okay, this is what tends to happen. Every time somebody buys a particular product in the example we just had, and then taking it one step further and saying, Okay, now I can use certain machine learning algorithms to try and predict a probability of somebody purchasing a product when they take certain specific actions. The reason that’s important you as a marketer for the example that I just gave is, if I can predict with a certain degree of accuracy, what’s going to happen when somebody takes certain specific actions, I can drive people towards those actions, I can now leverage that information to optimize my marketing campaigns. So that’s predictive data mining in a nutshell, it gets a lot more complicated very quickly, there’s a lot more to talk about. So I’ve given you literally the marketing guys 32nd version, a lot more information available on our website, and we’re happy to meet with anybody that obviously wants to learn more about this. We’re very keen on educating the market as much as possible about this. Walter: Yeah, I can imagine that can get pretty complicated pretty quickly. So I really do appreciate you giving us that brief overview. And I think you did a good job of summarising what appears to be a very complex topic. Now, I also want to know like, are there other companies operating this space? And if so, like, how do you folks at dotData, differentiate yourself from the competition? Sam: Great question. So the short answer is yes, of course, there are plenty of other companies that operate in this space. And having, you know, having said that, the one thing that is probably also a truism about the Machine Learning slash predictive analytics space, is that it is developing and is changing at an incredibly fast pace. So if you look at the positioning of companies, say, three, four years ago, when I first joined up dotData, versus how those same companies are positioning themselves today, how their products are built today, where they do today, radically different conversations. And that’s really been driven largely by how quickly the market is developing. Through all of that, however, the one huge differentiator for that data really comes down to the core engine of dotData and how dotData works. So one of the things that I haven’t, we haven’t talked about, and again, this gets a little bit technical depth of this conversation, but it’s important is that in the world of predictive analytics, right, when you go and use these machine learning algorithms to build your predictive models, these machine learning algorithms like flat tables, essentially, they’re not happy. So if you know if you don’t know how much you know about enterprise data, but especially in the world of enterprise data, if you think about something like salesforce.com, for example, as a user of salesforce.com, I just see a leads screen and it has lead information. And as my activities against my leads, it’s all in one location. But if I take the covers off of that, and look underneath in the guts, so to speak, of how this system operates, it’s basically what’s called a relational database. So all of those fields that I’m seeing many of them are really parts of different tables delivered in different parts of salesperson, they’re all connected together. Well, machine learning algorithms don’t like those things, machine learning algorithms, like flat tables, machine learning algorithms, like things that look like CSVs looks like spreadsheets. So a big part of machine learning is what’s called Feature engineering, which is essentially a process of taking these complex relational data tables, figuring out the patterns that make sense for your machine learning algorithm and building these flat tables essentially, that you then have to feed into machine learning algorithms. The biggest core differentiator for dotData is that we do that part automatically. That’s traditionally a very hands on process. If I go back to when you asked me the very first question about, you know how that data originated. That was the aha moment that our CEO had was watching In these data scientists spent literally months on building these feature tables that they would then have to manually put into the machine learning algorithms. And realizing there’s got to be a better way, we have to be able to build a system that will automatically find the connections between these tables automatically identify the patterns that are relevant and purposeful, and build these feature tables automatically. So that’s by far our biggest differentiator. And today, we’re really the only company in the market that provides that functionality. Walter: Okay, that makes sense. Yeah. And I always love the fact that whenever I interview people, it always seems like there is some kind of aha moment at the basis of all of these companies I speak with. And it’s really, it’s a really fun part of my job getting to that core drive, I guess, so that makes absolute sense. And I’m curious to know, what is next on the horizon for you folks at dotData? Sam: : So I think from, you know, sort of a couple of perspectives, right. One is from a, obviously, as a business growth is the biggest area of interest for us. And actually, one of the things that we think, especially given the economic uncertainty that’s happening right now, systems like that data actually become even more beneficial to organizations. You know, when money went investment, capital was plentiful, and organizations didn’t have to worry about headcount and didn’t have to worry about, you know, you could just hire to solve the problem, right? You needed to do things faster, you hire more data scientists, you needed to build products faster, you hired more data engineers, and so on. Well, with the economy doing what it’s doing right now, we’re actually seeing an uptick in demand, we’re actually seeing more companies saying, I don’t have the ability to expand my team, I don’t have the permission, so to speak financially, to go and hire 1015 20 More data scientists. So how do I make my existing team more productive. And that’s where dotData can give them a lot of help. So we see a lot of opportunity in the short term, as well as a long term from that perspective. And obviously, we have a whole lot of ideas and a whole lot of new things coming down the line from a product perspective, most of which I can’t really talk about just yet, but some very exciting things that are coming in the second half of this year, that will continue to expand on the capabilities of the product and also take us into some new areas we haven’t been in before. Although some legacy systems still use SOAP over SMTP, the transport method typically used for SOAP requests is HTTP. Part One: Java Calling Salesforce The Salesforce ecosystem is pretty massive. Developers need to work hard to stay up-to-date with the latest and greatest features and tools coming from Salesforce. In this article, we’ll mix a little bit of the and the . We’ll combine Java-based applications with Salesforce, and we’ll do so via web services. old new Java is a programming language and computing platform first released by Sun Microsystems back in 1995. Since then, we’ve seen the rise of Web 2.0 and web programming languages, containers, microservices, and cloud-native architectures. Yet even now, many new products and digital services designed for the future continue to rely on Java. Java will be around for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Salesforce has established itself as the world’s top CRM and customer success platform. With today’s enterprises relying on multi- and hybrid-cloud setups with applications that need to integrate seamlessly with one another, it’s not surprising that Java applications and the Salesforce Cloud need to intersect. So how do we get our Java and (SFDC) applications integrated and talking with one another? Salesforce.com In this article, we’ll discuss how to implement this integration using the Web Services Connector (WSC). We’ll use an example use case—a business that wants to use its Java application to manipulate Salesforce org data—and show you how to set up your developer environment and connect the pieces. However, before we start, let’s talk briefly about Salesforce and its API-first approach. Salesforce and the API-first Approach If you’re familiar with the SFDC ecosystem, then you will know that Salesforce takes an API-first approach when building features on its platform. In fact, Salesforce was to deploy web APIs! While the platform has many great built-in capabilities, Salesforce wants to enable its customers to create the capabilities and custom experiences they need for their own platforms. By offering APIs, Salesforce ensures that SFDC can be customized and connected to any external application that can interact with web services. Some of the APIs from Salesforce (and there are of them) include: one of the first companies a lot SOAP API REST API Bulk API Metadata API Chatter REST API Streaming API Tooling API Suffice it to say that Salesforce has its platform pretty well-covered by APIs, opening up access to its capabilities for countless different use cases. That being said, let’s dive into our use case. In our example use case, we have a Java application that helps a business generate leads for their sales organization. That business would like the Java application to push the qualified leads directly to their Salesforce CRM, avoiding the need for manually entering lead data into Salesforce. To integrate Java and Salesforce, we’ll use the Salesforce SOAP API and the library, which serves as a wrapper layer that simplifies working with the API in Java. Web Services Connector (WSC) Initial Setup The initial setup of our Java developer environment requires taking several steps. Fortunately, we had guidance from this . Nonetheless, we’ll provide an overview of the major steps here. Salesforce tipsheet Install the Java Developer Kit (JDK) To use Salesforce APIs in our Java application, we’ll install the Java Developer Kit (JDK) at version 11.0 or later. You can do that by visiting and finding the appropriate binary for your local machine. this page Install Eclipse Next, you’ll need a Java development IDE. While there are several options available to you, the steps for our walk-through will go with the Eclipse IDE. You can find the latest Eclipse IDE packages . Download and install the IDE on your local machine. here Install the WSC Since we’ll be using the Salesforce SOAP API, we need to install the WSC. Download WSC pre-built .jar files The for the WSC shows all of the versions available: Maven repository Navigate to the page for the version that that you’re using. Generate and download the WSDL for your Salesforce org Next, we’ll generate an WSDL to use in generating our .jar stub files. We can’t use pre-built .jar files here because the WSDL is specific to our Salesforce Org. If there are custom objects and fields defined in our Org, then the WSDL will reflect those, and the generated .jar will contain them. We log into our Salesforce developer organization. Then, we navigate to , , , . We click on “Generate Enterprise WSDL.” Setup Platform Tools Integrations API This will open a new tab in your browser, displaying your WSDL file. Save this file to your local machine with the name . Put it in the same folder where you downloaded the WSC .jar files. sfdc.wsdl Generate Java stub file To use the SOAP API with Java, we need to generate .jar stub files for use in our application project. Build a Java Backend that Connects with Salesforce

Something that has always baffled me is the way that fashion trends go around in circles, seemingly at whim and without warning (for those of us who don't attend Fashion Week, anyway). Round glasses have been resurrected from the '20s, mom jeans have made a triumphant return from the '90s, and even shoulder pads have made a brief reappearance in recent years. And yes, I'm dreading the day that fedoras make a comeback. While some of these resurgent trends are pretty whack, a lot of them make sense – and it isn't just the fashion industry that sees the old become new again. Featured in my newsletter today is David Wachs, CEO of . He revived the ancient art of handwritten letters, but with a modern spin... he produces them en masse with the help of 115 custom robots. Handwrytten I'm mind blown! Let's talk about it. From New to Old David Wachs is an engineer and serial entrepreneur who's managed to exit his first company – Cellit – and launch an incredibly successful second company called Handwrytten, of which he's now the CEO. Let's talk about Cellit first. Interestingly, David started this company as a real estate service. "The whole purpose of Cellit was to provide information on real estate – so you would drive by a house, text a number, and get info on the house. And then the realtor would capture a lead. We were kind of the first ones doing that." It slowly turned into something else, though. As their work grew more and more promotional, Cellit branched out into the hospitality space, and then onto big name brands like Abercrombie and Fitch, Toys R Us, and Sam's Club. It would eventually become a full-service mobile marketing agency. Cellit was sold to HelloWorld in 2012 which eventually became Merkle; and with that, David knew it was time to pivot. “I felt that text messaging had kind of run its course. I always felt that way – even when I started Cellit. People are now inundated with 1000s of text messages and emails a day... an average office worker spends about a quarter of their time managing their inbox. It's all just noise at this point.” The Handwrytten Revolution I told you that today's newsletter guest was someone who resurrected an old trend – and that's exactly what David did with his next project after Cellit, which he called Handwrytten. The inspiration struck when David was leaving his old company behind. “When I left, I wanted to send my employees and my customers 'thank you' notes for sticking with me, and helping us grow this business. I didn't want to send them an email – I wanted to send them a handwritten note.” He sat down with pen and paper and started writing handwritten notes. But of course, his hand cramped (we've all been there) and he ran out of stationery. “I thought there must be a better way; a way to scale handwritten note outreach, so that it was as easy as sending an email, but would still be noticed. And it would be easy for me to do. Even better if we could automate the whole process.” Handwrytten was born – and David started the iterative process pretty much the day after leaving his previous company. How It All Works Handwrytten is a software platform where you can use handwrytten.com or their iPhone/Android app, as well as integrate with salesforce.com and HubSpot. The company uses a number of ways to get data in, including Zapier and Integromat. You order the message, stationery, handwriting style, and volume, and Handwrytten does the rest. But don't worry – it isn't run by a factory of workers with impeccable handwriting and carpal tunnel. "What we actually do is we have 115 custom robots here in Phoenix that write the notes out in pen. Currently, each robot is custom-built; I wrote the software that actually does the writing. But they all can write in realistic handwriting, which is the most realistic handwriting available on the market today.” What's more, the company now offers a premium option where you can have your own handwriting style programmed into the robots. I'm absolutely blown away by the tech this guy has developed, and according to David, his robots are top of the range. “There's just nobody that comes close. So we're doing about 5,000 to 10,000 notes a day, on average, for everything from realtors to luxury brands and car dealerships, solar panel installers, etc.” Why Does It Work? So we know how Handwrytten manages to pump out thousands of notes every day – insane robot writers. (They're seriously cool. You can see a video of them in action .) here But my question to David was... why does this work? What's the appeal? If we've moved way beyond snail mail and into the cloud, why are people using a service like this? The Uniqueness Factor “Email is just junk at this point," David explained. "Sending somebody a text doesn't really say 'I care about you.' But when you receive a handwritten note in the mail, it's unique now. What's old is new again, right?” His explanation reminded me a lot of antique furniture. People love handmade things because they're unique – and they were made with time, effort, and care. I also thought about Mother's or Father's Day gifts; it's always lovely to receive a bought gift from your kids, but there's no denying that homemade gifts feel extra special. From a customer perspective, we all want to feel that we're cared about by the brands we buy from – even on a subconscious level. (I don't think any of us truly believe that a brand cares about us as individuals, but it's still nice to feel like they do.) The Spam Factor "When you're going through your mail, it's just bill, bill, bill, bill, bill – but if you see this nice handwritten note, you'll save that. You'll open that last." I definitely second that one. I know I've been way more likely to open and save a handwritten envelope than one that looks like it contains a bill. Plus, as David pointed out, with so much spam and junk mail floating around, getting an actual piece of mail feels special in itself. It's not often you get something physical in the mailbox these days. "Not only will you read it (which is pretty much a 99 to 100 percent read rate, because everybody wants to know who took the time and effort to write a note), but often you keep it.” The Time Factor And of course, time. We're all short on it. We all feel like we don't have enough hours in the day. “Nobody has any time anymore, right? Everybody's responding to 12 emails at once, and their Slack is going off, their Teams is going off, their emails are going off... nobody can sit down to focus and concentrate. So when you receive a handwritten note, you realize time went into it. And that's the gift that you're receiving.” What a beautiful sentiment. If someone takes time out of their day to write you a handwritten note, it really does mean the world – especially knowing how busy we all are. Of course, Handwrytten is in the business of creating that illusion. And I think it's one of the most fantastic business concepts I've heard in a while. It's seriously a win-win scenario; the customer feels cared about, the company gets repeat business, and the world gets a little more handwritten love. The Take-Home: Go Analog or Go Home When the whole business world was going digital, David and his team thought outside the box – or rather, they went back to an old-school way of thinking. And it's paid off in a big way. I'm not suggesting that Apple goes back to making handsets with rotary dials (though I'm sure there are a few of us who would be into that), or that Nintendo starts selling board games again. But there's always room for old trends to be revived in new and interesting ways. Let's look at some examples: Fujifilm revived Polaroid-style cameras with its line of brightly-colored Instax camera kits. Impala Skates relaunched the classic roller skate with a modern twist, and they're now one of the most popular brands in the industry. Depop gave thrifting a major facelift by providing an online platform for people to sell their retro and vintage finds. The list goes on – and B2B and SaaS companies are jumping on board as well. Moo.com brings the classic business card into the 21st century with their stylish and customizable designs. Trello revived the Kanban board, a system that was originally developed in the 1940s using pen and paper. The bottom line? There's always room for old trends to make a comeback – and businesses that are able to tap into that nostalgia are bound to find success. The fundamental capabilities of the internet can be boiled down to one simple interaction: a call and a response. One machine (the client) sends to another machine (the server), which with a reply. This back-and-forth request-and-response cycle is how every phone, television, smart fridge, or computer sends and receives data. requests responds However, there are several security risks inherent in this model, from application vulnerabilities to DDoS attacks. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at how Cross-Origin Resource Sharing, or , mitigates these risks and how it operates. By working with a small Node.js app that interacts with several Salesforce APIs, we will see the differences in responses when CORS is enabled and disabled, as well as what effect it has on our client. CORS First, let’s take a deeper look at what CORS is and why it exists. Web Pages Call External Resources Whenever a browser requests a web page, the server sends back a chunk of HTML. The browser then draws that HTML and, crucially, continues to ask the server for more information when necessary. For example, if there’s any content that can’t be parsed, such as images or videos, or code that needs to be executed (such as JavaScript), then the browser continues making requests to the server, and the server happily fulfills them. Security Risks Suppose you’re browsing around at , and your browser encounters some JavaScript that executes a request to . In this example, without any boundaries, can’t control who is requesting data from them. What would be is if a server could make a list of whom it trusts to be given access out on the web. A server dictates not only which domains can access its resources, but the types of HTTP verbs as well. If a client isn’t able to satisfy the server’s CORS requirements, then data cannot be executed or delivered. CORS is a concept that extends beyond any one programming language and is configured on a web server, such as nginx or Apache. Most crucially, it’s enforced by the browser: there’s no way around it, and data enforced by CORS can’t be accessed by browser clients outside of that context. CORS is designed to walk the line between enabling a client’s productivity and enforcing a server’s security. CORS is enforced through , which can be thought of as additional metadata attached to HTTP requests and responses. You might be familiar with adding headers for (such as ) or to specify the data types the client understands (via ). CORS has , which a server uses to state where a browser may load its resources from. If an opaque response serves your needs, set the request's mode to 'no-cors' to fetch the resource with CORS disabled. What’s going on here? Well, Salesforce provides semi-open access to its data and assets. In this case, we tried to use JavaScript’s function to make a request and retrieve some JSON data. However, due to CORS, we were blocked from doing so. Unauthorized access is exactly what CORS was designed to prevent. fetch Specifically, we were blocked by the lack of a proper definition. This header states which URLs a browser is permitted to load resources from. If this information is missing, then the browser simply cannot load the external resource, which in this case was the content at the path of our Salesforce instance. There are many other types of CORS headers, such as , which defines which HTTP methods a browser is permitted to make. Access-Control-Allow-Origin /services/data Access-Control-Allow-Methods Enabling CORS in Salesforce Fortunately, it doesn’t take much to enable CORS on the Salesforce APIs. Click , then run that code snippet one more time. Voila! It’s not much, but you should see a list of some Salesforce editions. Save Other CORS Considerations While Salesforce takes the utmost effort to provide a way to securely retrieve data, other platforms might not be as secure. Fortunately, CORS also provides the ability to pass in credentials . Credentials are useful if you’re navigating on a site that, unlike Salesforce, does not use an authentication mechanism. By setting an additional option in your client-side JavaScript request ( ), your browser’s cookies are sent over along with the request. Cookies have been used as an identifying mechanism since the very early days of the internet. Although they’ve largely been abandoned as an authentication method, some websites still do use them as such. It’s the server’s responsibility to receive the cookies and perform any additional validations on them. credentials: "include" Since CORS support is largely a consideration for servers (that is, servers should have CORS enabled by default), there isn’t much else for the client to do. There are different that a client can set, which have a variety of purposes. For example, if you’re building a series of microservices, then you may find that the ’s strict domain matching may be useful for doubly ensuring that requests and responses come from the same domain. modes same-origin We’ve largely been talking about CORS and JavaScript, but there’s another important component to web development where CORS can step in: the humble . The iframe element allows you to embed the contents from another URL into a web page. What keeps me from registering and just setting the page to the contents of Salesforce? Improperly configured CORS settings have the potential to impede legitimate user workflows, but disabling CORS entirely will certainly make your application more vulnerable to attacks from malicious clients. In general, as a developer, if an action can be done on the server, it’s more likely to be safer than performing work on the client, so make sure you are disabling CORS for a good reason if you’re thinking of it.
