So why can’t you grow your profits by exploiting the masses’ hunger for the next big social media app, or the next big iPhone game, or the next big app that solves 99 percent of their problems with just a few gestures on the screen? Obviously, you can. Whether you are a newbie, just beginning to build your empire, or already an established business owner looking to expand by investing in a mobile app, you just have to get started. Sooner or later, you will make it happen. You can solve 99 problems for your users and happily rake in the dollars if your app is good enough. But that’s exactly the problem for most people nowadays. You have to be good enough. And being good enough is extremely challenging! Most of the apps today get lost in the app traffic, or get poor reviews and are never downloaded after a few months, or the owners are forced to pull them back due to various bugs or UI/UX issues. In this article, I will therefore touch on a few pitfalls you can avoid when starting out in the world of mobile apps. Of course, I won’t make any guarantees, but I do hope these tips help you get the most out of your app idea. 1. Does your product idea need a mobile app at all? The first thing to consider is if your product actually needs an app at all. If you want to start developing an app just because everyone else is doing it, my recommendation is to not do it. Maybe think of other ways to grow your idea into a thriving business. For example, if you are a company that sells wholesale goods to distributors, you can easily run your business on phone calls and emails. The only people you should be concerned about are the distributors you work with directly. The general public won’t even know or care about your app even if you create one, which means your investment in the app will go completely down the drain. On the other hand, if you are a company that sells goods directly to the consumers, creating an app that lets users create and track their orders is a good idea. 2. Does your app have a sufficient market size? Another thing to think about is market size. Here you have to beware of pitfalls. Most people fall into the trap of just analyzing the number of potential customers for their business. Seeing that this size is huge, they just dive headlong into the process and start developing the app. However, if you only look at the size of the potential consumers, you are missing out on a large chunk of the data required for market analysis. What you are missing is the number of your competitors. There are so many apps that do the same thing nowadays that a new app almost definitely gets lost in the vast number of search results that you normally get in the online app stores. If you are doing what every other app in your niche is doing, you will be hard pressed to find any success. Therefore, be creative, add flavor to your app, and make sure you get to the masses by doing something that no other app has ever done before. 3. Is your UX designer good enough? UX design has always been one of the most underrated aspects of software development. It doesn’t matter if your app is solving a thousand problems for users if these users’ main problem is the app itself. Users need to intuitively be able to access the solutions you are providing through the app. Today, designing is not about where to put boxes and buttons, or what font and color to use. Therefore, make sure you hire an actual UX designer and not just make do with the backend developer who happens to be "very good at designing as well." 4. Do you really need cross-platform development in the beginning? Today’s app world is dominated by two operating systems, Android and iOS. Therefore, it might seem counterintuitive to create your app for only one platform at first. However, developing the same software for different operating systems without knowing whether it will succeed is a huge gamble. Your choice of platform completely depends on the target market analysis. For example, if your market is in the U.S. or Western Europe, you should probably go for iOS first. For anywhere else, Android is probably your best bet. You might also think about developing a web app if your target market consists of a large older audience that sways heavily in the direction of more PC usage. 5. Is your network good? The Internet is almost as important as air today. We know it’s there, we use it subconsciously, and it sustains us. Without networking, you will almost never grow your product to reach every nook and cranny of the world. Therefore, make sure to focus on how your app communicates with other devices in the network as well as the Internet as a whole. For example, if your app controls all the electronic appliances on the same local network, make sure that the app understands and can translate all the standard response codes sent by the connected IoT devices. 6. But, most criticism stops there - even if every YouTube commenter solely voiced these sentiments, they’d make up less than 0.2% of the overall view count; the vast majority are simply spectators. So what makes this passive consumption dangerous? More than you might think. Let’s break down some of the key reasons. It’s Open Source, and Anyone Can Access It Ctrl Shift Face’s video has a note right in the About section, linking to the exact code they used. , I’ll save you the painstaking detective work needed in tracking it down. Here you go Now, that code’s useless by itself. It comes neatly packaged, but not alongside the personal expertise you need to make it work - just like any other open source product. People are working together around the clock, continuously eradicating bugs, adding guides, and publishing manuals. Followers and contributors are growing in number, while the code itself gets consistently more effective. There’s no doubt that this community of coders have mostly good intentions, but that itself is what’s frightening - they’ve been able to achieve this with very little. Replace the people and scenarios with ones you don’t know, and if done properly, it’s hard to detect what is real; most cases where deep fakes are used are openly trying to entertain, and not deceive, via using obvious likenesses for entertainment value. This primary body has ample room for more sinister usage, hidden beneath normality. If someone is exposed to entertaining deep fakes daily, they’re more vulnerable to that annual, targeted smear campaign or fake news video. It’s Becoming Easier to Utilize So far, I’ve talked about deep fakes as a general idea or open source technology. This freedom of potential is lost when it’s packaged as a specific product, and completely subject to the team behind it (and their dodgy terms & conditions that was hastily agreed to). Often, this is in the form of a mobile app. Even the best face-tuning apps seem jovial compared to viral deep fake videos, but that gap will only get smaller. A major reason is that those videos are often done on a powerful computer, whereas apps are restricted to the processing power of a mobile device. 5G could change this, however, as with it comes - allowing the extensive rendering and algorithms required to be fulfilled server-side, then transmitted to the phone. massively reduced latency This ease of access also improves companies’ ability to perfect the technology. I’ve lived in Silicon Valley for a long time, and have seen it work both ways - trends that seemed scary at first, like machine learning, drones and driverless cars, all garnered benefits as they developed. I think we’re already seeing some of these positives emerge. A common trend throughout this article, entertainment, has forever been shaped by it, with new opportunities emerging in adapting old footage and expanding new formats. But, in an ironic twist, this benefit seems fake; a piece of potential that is far outweighed by risk, to the point of the to combat it. The technology is here, it’s rapidly expanding, and can’t be stopped; so instead, let’s think about a key benefit that I don’t see being discussed enough: education. The penetration into the entertainment sphere could be the final link we need for people to take their data seriously, being bolstered by elements such as . competition The misguided notion that advanced, technical concepts are beyond the understanding of the common user has been around since the inception of the internet. Deep fakes are the perfect vehicle for this new zeitgeist, as they adhere and warp people’s very personas, in a very dynamic way. We can’t change the level of impact deep fakes will have on technology, or society as a whole. We can, however, shape this impact for the better through educating people.

I didn’t even know what I should be doing with my life next. Yes, I was quite depressed at that time, but to explain everything better, let’s get back to 2021. A Career in Real Estate In 2021, I was working as a Real Estate Agent in Poland. It was my first proper profession in my homeland since I left the country right after college. The pandemic forced me to come back, but our plan at that time was to apply for a visa to Canada with my wife. We knew that the process would take some time, so while sorting everything out, I decided to open a business and become an agent. I had always wanted to own a business and work for myself. Challenges in the Polish Real Estate Market I enjoyed it, but let’s be honest. The real estate market in Poland is not the easiest one in Europe to work with. I had customers, houses, and flats for sale, and there was some rotation. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, but I knew that if I kept doing this for a few more years, I would be able to grow that business much more. Dreams of Moving Abroad However, I never wanted to live in my country. I always wanted to be somewhere else, and this thought was coming back to me every single day. I remember when I was around 16 years old, waking up in my family home, looking through the window, and thinking that I had lived here most of my life and the world was too big to spend the rest of my time in the same place. It was after Brexit, unfortunately, so if I didn’t get it, I would have had to apply for visas and all that… Facing New Challenges It wasn’t more than a month, I think, when I had my motorbike and car sold, customers were taken care of by my coworkers from the company I was at, and I was ready to go. I rented a room in my friend’s house and had to find a job quickly as I was quite short on money. I quickly got a CNC position after I graduated from mechanical college. It was all good; I began saving money for my wife to come so we could rent a flat. A few months passed, and I began to receive calls from the Home Office asking me for documents that would prove I lived in the UK for five years before. I thought it would be easy! All I needed to do was find old emails, payslips, and other things and just forward them. But once I started digging for them, it turned out I had lived here only four years and eight months or something very close to that. I was cooked… I didn’t know what to do, and it turned out that my plan was falling apart… again. A New Beginning in the South I went to a lawyer who told me that if my decision was refused, I had to apply for another review that would buy me more time. Of course, it happened, I did apply, and because there were thousands of people in a similar situation to mine - I got stuck here for another 2 years. In the meantime, I moved down to the south where I found a company that could provide me with a working visa if I needed it, but here is where the Ruby story actually begins! Discovering Programming I work as a CNC bending machine operator… Every day kind of looks the same. It’s super boring, and I was getting sick of it and wanted to change something, as this was not getting me any closer to my dream of owning a business, and I knew I wouldn’t become a solopreneur by staying here. WewnetrznyAzyl A Visit from an Old Friend Working on these blogs, especially with AI, felt to me as if I was at work doing a monkey job. It wasn’t what I wanted. I still thought about what to do because I knew I couldn’t stand working on CNC anymore. A few days later, my friend from Poland called me, saying he would like to come and see me. He is a programmer and doing well. As you might already know, I came up with a brilliant idea. I will ask him everything about this and will start learning. The more I thought, the more ideas I had, and I saw that programming does not set any borders. You can literally do anything with it. Starting My Coding Journey When he came, I spoke to him, and we began looking for great resources for me to learn coding. I stumbled upon a couple of them, all on Udemy. After a little research, I picked one and was happy and excited to get this going. It was JavaScript, of course. I was learning every single day, little by little, until I got to classes, and then I had another look at the course resources. Finding the Right Learning Path It seemed to me that I was going quite fast and would finish the course in probably 1-2 months, but I still hadn’t even done one project, and I didn’t even have a clue how to make one! Starting My Coding Journey When he came, I spoke to him, and we began looking for great resources for me to learn coding. I stumbled upon a couple of them, all on Udemy . Udemy After a little research, I picked one and was happy and excited to get this going. It was JavaScript, of course. I was learning every single day, little by little, until I got to classes, and then I had another look at the course resources. Finding the Right Learning Path It seemed to me that I was going quite fast and would finish the course in probably 1-2 months, but I still hadn’t even done one project, and I didn’t even have a clue how to make one! I knew it wasn’t a good way to learn, and from the experience I had from learning other things, I felt it was going to end up as tutorial hell. Discovering The Odin Project I quickly began to search for something else and found The Odin Project , which was recommended everywhere. It promised me to think as a programmer, sort out any problem on my own, build any project I wish, and be able to apply for junior dev jobs with all that knowledge. The Odin Project I thought that if it takes even 1 year or more for people to finish it, then it might be true. I gave it a go, and so far, I am not disappointed. Choosing Ruby Ok, but WHAT ABOUT RUBY?! While going through The Odin Project Foundations, I was thinking about which path I wanted to follow afterward: JavaScript or Ruby and Ruby on Rails. I read a lot and watched a lot of videos about it, and of course, I found a lot of articles that said Ruby is dead, nobody is hiring, it’s old and not good anymore, yada yada yada. I have always liked to be different and do things the opposite way for many people. Moreover, the idea of making an MVP fast with Ruby excited me as I could imagine myself doing more advanced projects than my previous WordPress blogs in probably less time with a higher success rate. All these were enough to make me choose it. If it’s the language that I can use to push my MVPs as fast as possible and see which one grabs people’s attention - then I am in!
