It all started with an X “kiss” that turned out to be a bliss between Lex Fridman and Elon Musk. Just a few days after an interview with Donald Trump, Lex Fridman made an announcement about the Roman Empire “deep dive” episode: So, a thousand years of history, give it or take, are going to be “compressed” into a single podcast episode (no plural in the original tweet?!). I don’t even have to bother to look up, but there are entire podcasts and YouTube channels dedicated exclusively to the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. What can I say, good luck with that. Guess whose reply was the first to pop up? The good news was that Elon Musk specifically mentioned the book(s), not the series “Foundation.” What Amazon did with “The Rings of Power” was blasphemy to any Tolkien fan. “Foundation” was a mission impossible. So, kudos for that worth-a-try. Now, let’s get down to the business of unpacking, explaining, and comparing. A Brief History of Asimov’s “Foundation,” Roman, and Mars Empires The “epidemy” of comparisons between the Roman Empire and the USA may seem like the new thing, but that’s not the case. Back as early as 1961, Mason Hammond published “Ancient Rome and Modern America Reconsidered.” Compared to the contemporary analyses that are cherry-picking the fall-oriented parts by wannabe YouTube historians, economy, and policy analysts, Mr. Hammond did some serious unbiased work. When you see only what you want to see, then you leave out some undeniable historical facts. When you turn the whole story about the fall of Rome into a scarecrow, then you conveniently “forget” to mention that this fall is not the “Endgame” in Marvel’s terms, but actually the rise of the Roman Empire. Where and when the Roman Republic ends, the Roman Empire begins. The last time I checked, the land of the free and the home of the brave was still a republic. When the sh*t hits the fan, it doesn’t take a lot of convincing that decentralized governance and less bureaucracy are nice to have and do. We all feel it instinctively. Unfortunately, it’s also in our nature to look for a savior. During the time when the Roman Republic was going through an unprecedented series of crises, there was a guy who had a thing for red. Now, any veteran fellow can confirm and explain that the very first thing military commanders do on a battlefield is to “blend in.” You don’t stick out because epaulets are the first on the most wanted list for your enemies. You move and act as a regular soldier or you become a sniper’s trophy. There were exceptions, of course. Just when all seemed lost, a familiar figure rode into the breach and led the counter-attack. Caesar, calling on his centurions by name and wearing a conspicuous red cloak, rallied his forces, and seeing their commander in danger, the Romans redoubled their efforts and threw off the attackers. So, if you’re going to talk about Ancient Rome and Modern America, you have to bring Caesar this way or another into the story, just like The Time in this article: The U.S. Faces the Same Risks Ancient Rome Faced in Caesar’s Day Am I implying that there’s a US Presidential Candidate who’s being compared to Caesar? Let me talk about “Foundation” for a change, so you can have a better understanding of Elon’s tweet in case you haven’t read the book(s). What Is Elon Musk Not Telling You About “Foundation?” Once upon a time, there was the fictional Galactic Empire that was about to go through 30K sh*tty years. That’s a long time, so one scientist came up with a solution thanks to something called psychohistory which would shorten this period to “only” a thousand years. A bunch of clever guys who called themselves "Encyclopedists" gathered all human knowledge and gave it a cheesy name - Encyclopedia Galactica. They had to hide on an isolated planet - Terminus. That’s a rather ominous name for a city on Mars, Mr. Musk, but what do I know?! My memory doesn’t serve me right at the moment, how long did it take to make this Galactic Encyclopedia and exactly how, but nowadays, we all know that AI could come in handy. But, this scientist was very clever, that’s why he created another (alternative) foundation in secret. Hmm, it smells like teen spirit and good old decentralization, doesn’t it? And, that’s about it. What follows is a conflict between the First Foundation and Galactic Empire; eventually between the First (original) and the Second (secret) Foundations. If you’re asking me, Isaac Asimov got a nice multi-book deal, so the original “Foundation” concept got a bit lost in translation in prequels and sequels. In a nutshell, it’s either technocracy or Dark Ages 2.0. Again, if you’re asking me, it’s not much of a choice, but ignore my voice. Knowledge Is Power, But Collective Memory Is Superpower Look, “Foundation” is a masterpiece, a deep dive into Ancient Rome history is useful, and building cities on Mars is exciting, but not (re)watching the movie Idiocracy (2006) is a crime against humanity. Why? Rebooting the System, any system, from time to time, is a good (refreshing) thing. But, there’s a catch. It has to be done properly. I’m not a developer, and my biggest tech achievement in life is learning how to install and use Linux Ubuntu. If during the rebooting process, some of the memory is lost, you’re f*cked. If we are to break ties with the current status quo and start all over (hopefully peacefully - radiation-free), it would be good to have some knowledge about who we were, what we could do, and especially what we shouldn’t do again, saved. All the knowledge in the world, including “Galactica Britannica" would be useless without a reliable, efficient, and unbiased system to pass it on to the next generations. It’s no coincidence that “Planet of the Apes” movies took so many references and inspiration from Ancient Rome: Ceasar and Proximus to begin with. Silicon Valley: With Swords & Shields

Reflecting back to the Hackapost hackathon, I wanted to share a couple elements on how the technology stack worked. There are indeed quite a couple of moving pieces involved. First of all, let’s talk about sensing the world. In order to do that, one needs sensors. To make that easy on us, we have been provided with hardware and tools from AllThingsTalk (ATT for short) in the form of their LoRa development kit. Hum, wait, what’s LoRa? Lora stands for a longer thing actually: “LoRaWAN”. “LoRaWAN™ is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) specification intended for wireless battery operated Things in regional, national or global network.” The LoRa Alliance website has a lot of stuff about it: https://www.lora-alliance.org As a piece of hardware, it has the form of a Microchip component (actually some licensed thing). One needs to plug this component somewhere so that we can control it. In the LoRa devkit, we can plug this into an Arduino board named the “Mbili Sodaq”. Sodaq stands for Solar Data Acquisition. This is kind of useful as a solar panel and a battery can keep the system powered up without an external source (if one wants an external source, it works still). More about it on: Semtech http://support.sodaq.com/mbili/ Let’s get back to sensors. Arduino boards usually require some soldering or play with breadboards etc. Not so with this one, as it has what is called “ ”. These sockets are making it much much easier to connect sensors in a modular fashion. And the LoRa development kit contains quite a couple of such sensors. Grove sockets There is something we discovered with this board during the hackathon: there is only one I2C connector and this means that one has to choose between the GPS module and the 3-Axis accelerometer. You can’t have both at the same time. Here is a view on the bits and pieces making up the kit. So, connecting sensors is easy, getting the LoRa modem is easy as well. Now, there is a need for some software to make all of this do something. Like sending data out so that we can use it in an app or website. First, the radio side of things That’s where comes in handy. They operate the LoRa network, and have antennas deployed in the country. Proximus EnCo Some areas are still spotty at this point. In order to be able to talk with the network, our little device has to be recognized. When using the LoRa development kit, one automatically gets a device registered in the system after having activated the development kit on the website. https://devs.enabling.be That translates into having a device id. The device id uniquely identifies the board (I do not really know if this is the board, or the modem itself). There is another important concept, namely the “cloud channels”. For the development kit, a channel is automagically created that forwards the sensor data to AllThingsTalk. The channel is using MQTT. The reference site for MQTT is http://mqtt.org What’s MQTT? It is an IoT protocol invented at IBM in 1999 by Andy Standford-Clark ( on Twitter). So much for being new! @andysc There is super cool interview of him on The Pi Podcast #14, that was out this february. http://thepipodcast.com/the-pi-podcast-14-andy-stanford-clark/ For the interested, the protocol specification is accessible here: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/webservices/library/ws-mqtt/ So, MQTT stands for “MQ Telemetry Transport”. It is a “lightweight publish/subscribe protocol flowing over TCP/IP for remote sensors and control devices through low bandwidth, unreliable or intermittent communications.” Ah, perfect for the IoT space. MQ stands for “Message Queuing”. There is a lot of available software to deal with MQTT: https://github.com/mqtt/mqtt.github.io/wiki/software?id=software Client libraries are also plenty: https://github.com/mqtt/mqtt.github.io/wiki/libraries For the server side of things, one can use RabbitMQ along with its MQTT Adapter ( ). https://www.rabbitmq.com/mqtt.html I think that it is what AllThingsTalk use at their side BTW. There is also a very widely used broker named Mosquitto: , and the code lives on GitHub from this month on: http://mosquitto.org/ https://github.com/eclipse/mosquitto Back to our Cloud Channel Subscription, here is the details of ours: Hum, well, but how is our device sending things? Retrieving data from Enabling.co is a matter of using the API. But that’s not what we want here. We want to send data sensed from our sensors on the Arduino board. Let’s pay a visit to how one programs the Arduino board to actually send data. In order to program the Arduino, one has to use the Arduino IDE. This IDE usually has a light background and it kills my eyes when coding. As you can see it is actually possible to get it with a dark theme. Just check https://github.com/jeffThompson/DarkArduinoTheme For setting things up for the LoRa development kit, let’s pay a visit to AllThingsTalk. The site itself isn’t telling much as the real meat is on http://www.smartliving.io/ Err, yeah, one step even further actually: https://maker.smartliving.io/ There are docs in there about how it works: http://docs.smartliving.io/kits/lora/ After having registered (“claiming”) the device, there is a nice “Playground” available: The interesting bit about this is that one can add other devices to a playground. Let’s have a look at ours, containing our single nice little device. As we had some fun before writing this, you can see a couple of values for the various sensors. This will obviously be empty for a new kit. Back to the hardware/Arduino front there are some things to do. Basically, there are some keys things to do: Add the type of board to the Arduino IDE Add the libraries for the board, LoRa, and sensors to the Arduino IDE Get a copy of the “Keys” that make it possible for the device to be recognized when it sends radio stuff, and that will make messages come into the Enabling system The libraries are also living on GitHub and you may want to stay up to date: https://github.com/allthingstalk/arduino-lora There is also a set of example sketches in there. A sketch is what an Arduino IDE helping you edit, compile and transfer into an Arduino board. There is a keys.h file as well, where one puts the keys retrieved from the smartliving.io cloud settings. These are things that are used by the code. This looks like easy, and it is from the developer perspective. Underneath, yeah, there are lots of things going on, by we do not mind. So, get the board connected to your PC via USB… (provided the correct COM port is selected in the Arduino IDE) Just compile and upload. From then on, the system will run its program loop and send data according to its logic. Sending pushes the data to the ATT platform (through Enabling but that’s under the covers). Data is now flowing through, from the sensor to LoRa, through Enabling to Smartliving. That’s where we can start talking about actually using the data in an application of ours. How? By leveraging APIs. There are actually several ways to do just that. There is the easy way, that doesn’t even involve Smartliving. Or just could too. More on this later. And it is crazy what one can do with it. But that will be for another post. But that’s not the API for Smartliving. If we want to use the API of Smartliving (and that’s what I wanted to do during the hackathon, not sure I would have done that if I had had more clues about Waylay…) Let’s have a look at the Smartliving API. It is documented at http://docs.smartliving.io/api/ First thing I jump onto when dealing with APIs is: “How the hell am I going to authenticate myself with this thing”? APIs have often their own views on this. So, we need ids, keys etc. Where are those? Just here: And then, the fun begins with doing the right dance with headers and so on. I actually wanted to implement the API using my favorite development platform, which happens to be Pharo ( ) http://pharo.org These days, I am also using Python and Javascript|Node but they do not have the “Pharo feel”. If you want to know more about Pharo, here is a couple of nice articles about it on Medium.com. I made a solution for dealing with CMTSes and cable modems with it: http://pharo.org/success/CableExpertise It looks like this: Pretty much something that could make good use of all of the items in the IoT space as there is nothing that limits it to doing only CMTS work. It is a generic data collection and presentation + alerting thing. So, I wanted to use Pharo for accessing the API. And started with a little test… The client being an AttClient instance. An AttClient authentication looks like this: One nice thing is that one doens’t have to create a myriad of classes to organize things as, like in Objective-C, there are protocols, which are grouping methods. Long story short, the API invocation code looked like this at the end; The explore thing shouldn’t be in a test, but hey, we were hacking. It shows an object explorer like this: This makes it very handy to explore the results from the API and drill down, all without leaving the development environment. Once the API client was working nicely, I turned into making a server so that we could access the data in the format that was required by the front end developer. In Pharo, we have a little framework named “ ” which can do that pretty easily: Teapot With the xml entity returned being produced by the #sensors message, which actually sent ‘#sensors:’ with our actual device id. Giving: We needed XML out, that why there is the last line converting the data on its way out. It was actually easy as well: As you can see, Pharo code is pretty clean. At this point, we now have the possibility to use the data in the way we want. Of course we could have this same thing in a JS frontend app right away. But I was more interested in getting a Pharo based component that would help me created IoT apps than the business case. We had the opportunity to work with very useful hardware, test all sensors, get data through all of the path, discover new services and features, integrate APIs, and meet new cool people. For me, that’s what mattered about it, not being part of yet another startup. To be frank I am already busy with a couple ventures, and the key point was to understand all of this in more depth. Welcome back to POWER LEADER with our next expert, Alex Song, Founder and CEO of . Coming from the world of earned media relations, I am intrigued by my marketing counterparts and how machine learning is impacting their roles. Proxima The direct-to-consumer (DTC) audience further segmented by those who are iOS users is ripe for disruption. Song and his team have “cracked the code” on the post-iOS 14.5 world pairing proprietary data with machine learning to impact predictive AI in advertising. Let’s jump in. SE:  What innovations are you bringing to your industry? What sets you apart from your competitors? AS: Digital advertising continues to be a massive industry, but Apple’s iOS privacy
updates and skyrocketing Facebook advertising costs are making it much more
difficult for companies to scale and thrive online. More than 60% of iOS users have
opted out of iOS app tracking, which eliminates the signal between advertisers and
consumers. That major shift makes for a punishing advertising environment, with the cost of customer acquisition increasing by 50% over the last two years.  Now companies must spend more for less impressive results. As a DTC brand founder who managed to exit in 2021, I experienced the challenges
that were brewing in the digital advertising ecosystem due to a plethora of cheap
capital and the rising costs of customer acquisition. I started Proxima, an AI
audience technology, in 2022 to help digital businesses navigate these challenges
by providing better targeting and performance across media platforms such as
Google, Meta and TikTok at scale. Using predictive AI, Proxima leverages anonymized, first-party data and more than
55 million unique shopper personas from a network of 13,000 brands to reach new
customers, lower customer acquisition costs and increase ROI on ad spend. SE:  What is a recent win or announcement your company just celebrated? Why does it matter? I’m very excited to share that on April 19, 2023, Proxima to enable increased profitability and performance at scale across major AS: launched its self-service platform advertising platforms. Privacy updates and sky-high advertising costs on Facebook and Instagram, once the launch pad for thousands of small DTC businesses, are making it increasingly difficult for digital companies to target new audiences and acquire new customers efficiently. AS: Additionally, economic conditions have wreaked havoc on many major tech companies which are bellwethers for the rest of the industry — and capital is in shorter supply and more expensive. This makes cost efficient customer acquisition and establishing profitable unit economics more critical than ever. SE:  What stories aren’t currently being told about your industry that your audience should know? Meta’s Advantage+, a program touted as optimizing full ad campaigns with machine learning, is increasingly tipped in favor of Meta’s big spenders.  In fact, Advantage+ is the beginning of a significant strategic shift for platforms like AS: Facebook and Instagram. Our data reveals that larger brands, with the ability to spend more on Advantage+ campaigns, are reaping disproportionate benefits compared to smaller brands on Meta. More specifically, while Advantage+ campaigns were more expensive across the board, they were 26% more expensive for smaller brands, but only 4.7% more expensive for large brands. We can help digital companies of all sizes overcome this challenge with improved
targeting and more efficient results. SE:  How do you envision your business changing in the next 3-5 years? It’s very hard to predict with any certainty because we must see where macroeconomic conditions take us.  My mantra is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. During the pandemic there was high demand for digital solutions, which lulled digital marketers into believing they should expect high returns for the foreseeable future. AS: But then the economy changed and Apple’s new approach to app tracking happened. The digital advertising community as a whole also has to ride the wave with the performance and stability of current media platforms (Twitter implosion anyone?) and the emergence of new ones. Our vision as a business is to be the essential growth platform for all digital businesses. In the near term that means optimizing our audience solution and further leaning into AI, one of the most revolutionary technologies we’ve ever seen. In the mid to longer term, we must build a comprehensive product offering that supports the livelihood of our digital customers across all the most important facets of their business health. SE:  What changes do you think are necessary for your industry to stay competitive in current economic times? Keeping pace with AI, for one.  AI is changing the face of business and society — you can’t turn around without reading about OpenAI and Chat-GPT, for example. Predictive AI’s impact on digital advertising will continue to be massive for targeting new high-value customers and scaling advertising budgets profitably. AS: Advertisers need to partner with companies like Proxima that can offer them the right AI tools and techniques. Another thought: I strongly urge my clients to take calculated risks. You must budget for testing — in other words allot small investments to testing new media platforms.  You never know where the next social media arbitrage opportunity will be, so you should test small ad budgets on new entrants to understand their impact on customer acquisition.  You won’t stay relevant if you don’t explore new waters. SE:  What measures has your organization taken to ensure you're driving towards the most important goals? We are a mission driven organization that invests significantly in ensuring alignment of our most valuable assets - our people. Ideas are great but it’s the execution that enables businesses to reach truly remarkable milestones. Our people drive that execution which means prioritizing them above all else. AS: This shows up in the culture we’re building and values we operate within. Culture is not perks or parties, culture is the operating system that your team commits to when leadership isn’t present. We have many important values but two that I emphasize are Transparency and Grit.  We believe deeply in transparency and providing an environment where candid feedback is the norm and company performance is visible to all. We seek out individuals that take extreme ownership over their responsibilities and embrace the grind of startups with levels of grit that are unmatched.  We’re just getting started but it’s so important to ensure that we’re starting with the right people in the right seats.

The 2024 Presidential election of the United States is only a couple of months away. With Joe Biden out of the race, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump from the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively, remain the top contenders for the leadership of the most powerful country in the world. Usually, stakeholders in the blockchain industry, including Web3 users and cryptocurrency enthusiasts, maintain a reserved stand on politics. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterik even recently sounded a note of warning against voting for candidates simply on the basis of their allegiance to decentralized technologies. However, the stakes are higher for the upcoming elections. The right candidate could mean the difference between a relapse into the stifling, "regulation by enforcement" environment the industry currently battles under the Biden administration or a renewed approach that will drive innovation and sustain investor's interest. The voting significance of the blockchain/crypto community is also not lost to the Democratic and Republican parties, as contestants from either side have made moves to appeal to major industry stakeholders. All of these underline a crucial question: "Which candidate is better for the advancement of blockchain/Web3 interests in the United States?" To get a better context, let's look at the industry's current state. Pre-Elections 38% of workers in the United States admit to using blockchain technology in their businesses, while over 40% of American adults own cryptocurrency. With the approval of Bitcoin ETFs earlier this year, there has been increased nationwide interest in digital assets and cryptocurrency. However, blockchain in the United States continues to grapple with a tricky landscape. Unclear regulatory guidelines, a perceived "Operation choke point 2.0," and the determined attempts of the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission) under Gary Gensler to clamp down on "unregistered securities"  have seen Coinbase, Ripple, and Terra Labs, among others, slammed with contentious lawsuits. The ideal presidential candidate, among other things, would address policy change, promote fair regulations, and encourage pro-blockchain development. The Trump Option Key industry players like Ryan Selkis, the CEO of Messari, the Winklevoss brothers of Gemini, Elon Musk, and many others consider former President Donald Trump as the ideal choice for blockchain innovation. And with good reason. Trump has been increasingly vocal in supporting digital assets and blockchain technology. A major highlight was the last Bitcoin conference in Nashville, where he made the headlines for his position in the industry and his newfound love for crypto. But this was not the case just a few years back.  During his tenure as the President of the United States in 2021, Trump came down heavily on crypto in a Twitter (now X) post where he clearly stated he was not a fan of digital assets.  His change of mind and explicit declaration of support for blockchain has been a rallying call that has reflected positively on public polls. Beyond verbal reassurance, the republican nominee's financial disclosure documents reveal he has over a million dollars investment in Ethereum and three separate NFT collections that have made over $7.5m in sales. His campaign team has also encouraged and received donations in crypto to the tune of 25 million US dollars at the end of July. At the Bitcoin conference, Trump also commented about firing Gery Gensler, prioritizing blockchain tech growth in the US, and shutting down CBDCs. These and many more of Trump's bold and vocal stance on the blockchain have endeared him to the crypto majority and positioned him as a much-needed ally to turn the tide politically. Kamala Harris However, Polymarket, the world's largest decentralized prediction market, shows a keenly contested battle ahead, with Kamala Harris trailing only a few points behind Trump. Harris clinched the presidential nomination of the democratic party after Joe Biden stepped down and is vying to become the first female President of the United States. Unlike Trump, Kamala Harris has refrained from any public commentary on how to approach the blockchain industry. Similarly, the recently released 92-page official platform of the democratic national committee (DNC) had no direct or implied mention of blockchain, crypto, or digital assets, sparking rumors that Kamala Haris may toe the Biden line. On the flip side, however, there are already positive signs that a democratic presidency may favor blockchain sentiment, especially with ongoing efforts from the DNC to reach out and interact with industry stakeholders.  Billionaires like Mike Cuban, with extensive investments in Web3 companies including Polygon, OpenSea, and Arbitrum, are also betting on the democratic candidate. In addition, the commitment of Tim Walz, Harris's running mate, to clean energy policies could significantly shape the future crypto-mining and pave the way for a more environmentally sustainable approach. The personal stance of Harris concerning the blockchain industry, however, remains unclear and may be the biggest drawback for moderate voters and the younger, more tech-savvy demography. Beyond Elections In the broader tech ecosystem, especially with the emergence of AI, the impact of which is currently sweeping access to all sectors, what will Trump or Harris's win mean for solutions incorporating blockchain technology? Since its explosive resurgence last year, artificial intelligence has highlighted the need for decentralized technologies to bridge the infrastructural and computing gap that traditional tech companies have not been able to fill. Decentralized marketplaces and DePIN have enjoyed growing popularity in the past year due to their affordability and competitive edge, especially in executing AI projects. However, a tight leash on AI development will spill over to blockchain, limiting the potential capabilities of Web3 and DePIN.  An elected Trump will be actively seeking a repeal of the 2023 Biden AI executive order in a bid to loosen the reins and give more room for development. While this is good news for innovation, critics are concerned about the potential deleterious effect of unchecked growth in the AI sector. The explosive pace of acceleration of generative AI technology, although capable of yielding short-term gains for Web3, may create new social problems.  Take, for example, the emergence of dangerously accurate deep fakes. On the other hand, democratic Harris will most likely seek to uphold the executive order, pushing for more guidelines to structure the sector with emphasis on consumer protection laws, an approach sources claim the majority of Republican and Democratic voters inherently support. Rounding Off The 5th of November is gearing up to be a pivotal moment for the future of Web3 in the United States. With blockchain as a major talking point, regulatory clarity and the perceived ability to implement favorable policies will play a crucial role in the outcome of the elections. Currently, only the Trump candidacy has articulated and maintained these ideals. Therefore, except for a last-minute solid pro-blockchain move by the democratic team, Donald Trump remains the prime choice for many industry stakeholders and enthusiasts.
