With the recent launch of the iPhone 16 I thought it would be great to try and find workarounds to the AI feature gaps that iOS has, especially for people switching from an Android device. Here’s how to set up an iPhone and get some of the most popular smarts from a Pixel phone: Circle to Search, Google Lens, Gemini and even Work profiles. Circle to Search on any screen Pixel devices come with out-of-the-box integration with Google services like Gmail, Google Maps, Gemini, etc. Fortunately, all of these services and apps are also available for iOS, and while Apple only allows switching defaults for the web browser and mail apps, you can pretty easily ignore Apple’s stock apps. But what about deeper integrated features like Circle to Search? Being able to search the content of your screen, regardless of the app that you are seeing, is extremely powerful. You can use it to select any text you see –even inside an image–, or to look for a place that you like on social media, or to search for and buy the clothes that someone is wearing on a video, etc. There are infinite use cases. The workaround to get this on iOS has three components: the iPhone’s Action button, the regular Google search app –which comes bundled with Google Lens–, and one of the most useful features on iOS, the Shortcuts app. Emulating Circle to Search is as simple as installing the Google app, and then creating a shortcut that automates the following flow: take a screenshot and pass it to Google Lens. The AI model processed both voice and image input and provided answers instantaneously. Unfortunately, Visual Intelligence won’t be available for a while. Apple will not be ready to release its Apple Intelligence features until later this fall –even though it was one of the biggest highlights of the iPhone 16 launch–. The good news is that all of the scenarios demoed during the official presentation can already be solved using Google Lens. Triggering this variant of Visual Intelligence powered by Google Lens is as easy as enabling the Back Tap Accessibility action. This lets you run a shortcut when you double-tap or triple-tap the back of your iPhone. To get started, create a new shortcut that simply launches Google Lens. Then, navigate to the Touch Accessibility settings menu, enable Back Tap, and select your Google Lens shortcut. You can see detailed instructions here. Gemini is easily accessible on Pixel phones, and Apple promises that the iPhone 16 will get Apple Intelligence with ChatGPT integration –Apple’s response to the LLM craze– at some point in early 2025. But like with the Visual Intelligence workaround above, there is no need to wait for Apple Intelligence to enjoy some good AI conversations. First, create a new shortcut on the Shortcuts app and search for the “Open URLs” action. Then, type exactly “googleapp://robin” as the URL to open, which will launch the Google search app directly with Gemini enabled. You can rename your shortcut as “Gemini” and set it to trigger from a Triple Back Tap, a Control Center shortcut, a Home Screen icon, or even from your Action button if you use Gemini more often than Circle to Search. Some of those improvements might never see the light of day, but that shouldn’t stop you from properly separating your work from your personal life. On Android, profiles allow users to install the same app twice. This helps keep work content separate from personal content. That means different widgets, different notifications, different placement of the app icon, etc. Since iOS doesn’t allow installing the same app again, the best way to replicate this behavior on iPhone is by using different apps for personal and work accounts. For example, Gmail for your personal email account and Apple Mail for your work account. Same with Google Calendar and Apple Calendar. Once both apps are set up with their respective accounts, set work apps and their widgets on their own Home Screen page. Then, create a new Focus –let’s call it “Out of office”– that silences notifications from the work apps, and hides the Home Screen with all the work content. Similar to a work profile on Android, you can manually enable the “Out of office” focus on your iPhone to stop seeing any work-related content. You can combine this with a “Work” focus that shows specific work-related widgets on the Lock Screen and automatically gets enabled during working hours: If you only want to disable the “work profile” and hide work-related content during your scheduled vacations, you can create an automation that gets your calendar events, and only enables the “Out of office” focus if it detects an event with the title “Vacation”. I fell in love with the Pixelbook about two months ago. I saw a coworker at Google using one, and I was immediately impressed by its extreme thinness. The Pixelbook is as thin as two USB-C ports stacked. Why hadn’t I paid any attention to such a beautiful device until now? The Forgotten Chromebook Chromebooks were first announced in 2011, and I admit I ignorantly dismissed them as cheap laptops that constantly relied on internet connectivity. This sentiment made me ignore most of the updates released by Google for years. Also, as a Windows Phone user, and later as an iPhone user, my laptop aspirations were better covered by the ecosystem integrations that a Surface or an iPad could offer. The last time I owned a laptop was in summer 2018. Back then, I owned a Surface Book, but it was chunky and not very easy to travel with. My needs for a personal laptop were also very simple –they still are–, which made me wonder if I could survive with just a tablet. When I switched to an iPad Pro as my main computer in late 2018, I wrote: “A vast majority of customers have simple needs when it comes to technology, and they expect equally simple solutions to their problems. Most users want a computer for editing or creating text documents, browsing the web, responding to emails, watching movies,” and I still think that’s true today. For years, I used the iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard Folio as my only personal device, even after switching from iPhone to Pixel! I’d use the iPad to write blog posts on Google Docs, stream movies during flights, read articles on the web, watch YouTube videos, etc. Unlike a traditional laptop, the iPad felt limited at times, particularly when browsing the web. Many websites, especially those from financial institutions and airlines, default to the mobile version even when I specifically request the desktop site. Some other websites directly force me to open the mobile app, preventing me from using the browser at all. This constant struggle for a full desktop experience ultimately led me back to wanting a laptop. Enter Pixelbook Last April, when my coworker took his Pixelbook out of his bag, my first thought was: “Wow, that’s a thin laptop.” I dimly recall Google announcing it in 2017, but I did not pay much attention to it. Looking at it now, I couldn’t avoid thinking that I hadn’t seen such a portable laptop that also looked this good in a while. The combination of aluminum and glass accents, the symmetry in its squared body, and its consistent thickness throughout the whole fanless chassis, all make the Pixelbook the sexiest Chromebook ever made, even seven years after its release. Trying to get over the attractive looks, I remember thinking that ChromeOS was not a really good fit for me when it came out. But what about now? I felt very ignorant, not knowing what changes ChromeOS had announced in the past few years, so I did some research. It turns out that ChromeOS has changed a lot since its debut, and Chromebooks can be very capable laptops. Especially after last year’s Chromebook Plus program, which introduced a new generation of laptops with cutting-edge hardware, ready for the AI era. But what about the Pixelbook? Can it still handle the latest ChromeOS version? After all, Google introduced the Pixelbook as a premium device with beefed-up 2017 specs: a 7th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, for a whooping retail price of $1,649. I pleasantly discovered that the Pixelbook went through a program that Google introduced to extend software updates for certain Chromebooks. As a result, it expanded its “Auto Update Expiration” date until August 2027. That’s a full decade after its announcement; three more years to go! Let’s just say I was eager to find a reason to get one. Then I discovered that Android phones integrate seamlessly with ChromeOS: the Pixelbook can stream apps from my Pixel onto a floating window, without having to install the app on the laptop, and it can access recent pictures that I took, or Chrome tabs that I have opened on my Pixel. I was convinced. But since Google stopped selling the product in 2020, I had to figure out how to get one. A Seven-Year-Old Jewel Getting a discontinued laptop is easy if you don’t mind scuffs, marks, scratches, or poorly-removed stickers. Fortunately, I found a seller on Amazon that sells renewed top-of-the-line Pixelbooks in “excellent” condition for $335. When mine arrived a few days later, I could not believe my luck. I got a Pixelbook that had been barely used, with 95% battery health and only 38 charging cycles. Setting it up was easy, even as a newbie in the ChromeOS world. After logging in with my Google Account, the Pixelbook has quickly become a familiar laptop, giving me immediate access to all my files, pictures, contacts, emails, calendar, bookmarks, and basically everything I need. It feels like the Google equivalent of logging in on a Surface with a Microsoft Account, or on a MacBook with an Apple ID: seamless access to all your services. Streaming apps on the Pixelbook is as easy and intuitive as it sounds. I don’t have to think about which apps should be installed; I already have access to all the apps from my Pixel. I nonetheless love being able to use the Google Play Store. I installed video apps like Netflix, Prime Video, or Plex so that I can download content for offline viewing. To sweeten the deal, I also bought a Pixelbook Pen, which originally sold for $99. I was curious to see how the 10 ms drawing latency felt using 2017 technology, and I found a new Pen for $25, in a sealed box! I don’t expect to use it too frequently, but it’s nice to know that I can use it to sketch or hand-write when I flip the Pixelbook into tablet mode. ChromeOS also includes a built-in Linux environment, allowing users to run desktop applications, command line tools, and code editors. I enabled it to install GIMP, a free and open-source graphics editor used for image manipulation and editing. But not everything is great. The Pixelbook’s screen bezels are so big that they look out of place even among other 2017 laptops. Even with all its then-top-tier specs, the Pixelbook won’t be getting some of the exclusive AI features reserved for Chromebook Plus devices, automatically making it fall behind the competition. If we take into account that the Pixelbook will stop updating in a little over three years, one could argue that the laptop cannot even compete anymore. Hope for the Future The improvements of the past seven years have focused on updating internal hardware specs to support new software features without any hiccups. But product design hasn’t been a priority for most Chromebook manufacturers. I tried looking for any other Chromebook that could rival the Pixelbook’s design, and I found nothing as elegant, timeless, and well-built. Even today’s most expensive Chromebook Plus laptops seem to fall behind my Pixelbook’s unique looks. The versatility, up-to-date smarts, and premium feeling of the Pixelbook, coupled with its current low price point, make it an amazing low-cost Chromebook in 2024. I’m truly enjoying using the Pixelbook. It has brought back the joy of writing on a laptop, without missing the tablet experience. But I’m sad that there isn’t a clear successor. Is there space for premium Chromebooks in such a competitive market? Will we ever see a Pixelbook 2? I hope we get an answer within the three years of life left in this beauty. Most users want a computer for editing or creating text documents, browsing the web, responding to emails, watching movies, For years, I used the iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard Folio as my only personal device, even after switching from iPhone to Pixel! I’d use the iPad to write blog posts on Google Docs, stream movies during flights, read articles on the web, watch YouTube videos, etc. Unlike a traditional laptop, the iPad felt limited at times, particularly when browsing the web. Many websites, especially those from financial institutions and airlines, default to the mobile version even when I specifically request the desktop site. Some other websites directly force me to open the mobile app, preventing me from using the browser at all. This constant struggle for a full desktop experience ultimately led me back to wanting a laptop. Enter Pixelbook Enter Pixelbook Last April, when my coworker took his Pixelbook out of his bag, my first thought was: “ Wow, that’s a thin laptop. ” I dimly recall Google announcing it in 2017, but I did not pay much attention to it. Wow, that’s a thin laptop. Looking at it now, I couldn’t avoid thinking that I hadn’t seen such a portable laptop that also looked this good in a while. The combination of aluminum and glass accents, the symmetry in its squared body, and its consistent thickness throughout the whole fanless chassis, all make the Pixelbook the sexiest Chromebook ever made, even seven years after its release. Trying to get over the attractive looks, I remember thinking that ChromeOS was not a really good fit for me when it came out. But what about now? I felt very ignorant, not knowing what changes ChromeOS had announced in the past few years, so I did some research. It turns out that ChromeOS has changed a lot since its debut, and Chromebooks can be very capable laptops. Especially after last year’s Chromebook Plus program, which introduced a new generation of laptops with cutting-edge hardware, ready for the AI era. But what about the Pixelbook? Can it still handle the latest ChromeOS version? After all, Google introduced the Pixelbook as a premium device with beefed-up 2017 specs: a 7th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, for a whooping retail price of $1,649. I pleasantly discovered that the Pixelbook went through a program that Google introduced to extend software updates for certain Chromebooks. As a result, it expanded its “Auto Update Expiration” date until August 2027. That’s a full decade after its announcement; three more years to go! Let’s just say I was eager to find a reason to get one. Then I discovered that Android phones integrate seamlessly with ChromeOS: the Pixelbook can stream apps from my Pixel onto a floating window, without having to install the app on the laptop, and it can access recent pictures that I took, or Chrome tabs that I have opened on my Pixel. I was convinced. But since Google stopped selling the product in 2020, I had to figure out how to get one. A Seven-Year-Old Jewel A Seven-Year-Old Jewel Getting a discontinued laptop is easy if you don’t mind scuffs, marks, scratches, or poorly-removed stickers. Fortunately, I found a seller on Amazon that sells renewed top-of-the-line Pixelbooks in “excellent” condition for $335. When mine arrived a few days later, I could not believe my luck. I got a Pixelbook that had been barely used, with 95% battery health and only 38 charging cycles. Setting it up was easy, even as a newbie in the ChromeOS world. After logging in with my Google Account, the Pixelbook has quickly become a familiar laptop, giving me immediate access to all my files, pictures, contacts, emails, calendar, bookmarks, and basically everything I need. It feels like the Google equivalent of logging in on a Surface with a Microsoft Account, or on a MacBook with an Apple ID: seamless access to all your services. Streaming apps on the Pixelbook is as easy and intuitive as it sounds. I don’t have to think about which apps should be installed; I already have access to all the apps from my Pixel. I nonetheless love being able to use the Google Play Store. I installed video apps like Netflix, Prime Video, or Plex so that I can download content for offline viewing. To sweeten the deal, I also bought a Pixelbook Pen, which originally sold for $99. I was curious to see how the 10 ms drawing latency felt using 2017 technology, and I found a new Pen for $25, in a sealed box! I don’t expect to use it too frequently, but it’s nice to know that I can use it to sketch or hand-write when I flip the Pixelbook into tablet mode. ChromeOS also includes a built-in Linux environment, allowing users to run desktop applications, command line tools, and code editors. I enabled it to install GIMP, a free and open-source graphics editor used for image manipulation and editing. But not everything is great. The Pixelbook’s screen bezels are so big that they look out of place even among other 2017 laptops. Even with all its then-top-tier specs, the Pixelbook won’t be getting some of the exclusive AI features reserved for Chromebook Plus devices, automatically making it fall behind the competition. If we take into account that the Pixelbook will stop updating in a little over three years, one could argue that the laptop cannot even compete anymore. Hope for the Future Hope for the Future The improvements of the past seven years have focused on updating internal hardware specs to support new software features without any hiccups. But product design hasn’t been a priority for most Chromebook manufacturers. I tried looking for any other Chromebook that could rival the Pixelbook’s design, and I found nothing as elegant, timeless, and well-built. Even today’s most expensive Chromebook Plus laptops seem to fall behind my Pixelbook’s unique looks. The versatility, up-to-date smarts, and premium feeling of the Pixelbook, coupled with its current low price point, make it an amazing low-cost Chromebook in 2024. I’m truly enjoying using the Pixelbook. It has brought back the joy of writing on a laptop, without missing the tablet experience. But I’m sad that there isn’t a clear successor. Is there space for premium Chromebooks in such a competitive market? Will we ever see a Pixelbook 2? I hope we get an answer within the three years of life left in this beauty. Before building Bzar, we debated whether we would base our stack on pixel streaming, which renders content on the cloud, or a locally rendered tech that uses a device’s own computation power. Since this choice drastically impacts a project’s cost, scalability and user experience, it’s an important aspect to get right from the outset, before commencing writing a line of code. Until now, we have had to choose between quality and scale. WebGL is cheap but the graphics leave a lot to be desired. Cloud rendering on the other hand enables high-end graphics but is way too expensive to scale. Even recent developments in cloud rendering where up to 4 users can utilize one GPU won’t solve the core problem. But that’s recently changed. After a lengthy period of development, the Google Chrome team released something called . As opposed to the previous iteration, WebGL, this rollout enables your browser to access more of the computational power of your device's GPU. (Graphics Processing Unit). WebGPU In other words, real-time computation of high-quality 3D graphics can now happen locally on your device – a fantastic feat that will drive mainstream adoption of immersive virtual spaces at scale. So how does WebGPU stack up against pixel streaming? Let’s dive into both technologies, consider the pros and cons of both based on real-world testing and explain how to approach decisions around which is best for a specific immersive application. WebGPU vs Pixel Streaming: Head-to-Head To gain a comprehensive understanding of user experiences, we conducted a test, pitting the two technologies against each other head-to-head. The objective was to construct an identical environment using Pixel Streaming (leveraging Unreal 5.3 and a MetaHuman Avatar) and WebGPU (employing Babylon.js and a Ready player me Avatar). We gained a nuanced perspective through extensive hands-on work with both solutions and careful analysis of the different outcomes. A quick note:  our exploration will concentrate on graphics on mobile devices, tablets, and PCs—excluding VR, which comes with different challenges and solutions. Our tests show a few core differences: The between the two environments is perceptible but not monumental. Particularly on mobile devices, the average user might not discern a substantial difference. fidelity contrast The is the most striking divergence. A Metahuman avatar, for instance, is considerably more realistic than a Ready Player Me avatar. However, achieving this realism with a Metahuman Avatar demands pricier hardware, making it a consideration for specific use cases constrained by cost and availability. quality of avatars The of the WebGPU experience stands out, showcasing negligible latency even on an average internet connection. While it might not attain the same photorealistic heights as Pixel Streaming, WebGPU represents a substantial improvement from its predecessor, WebGL. remarkable responsiveness WebGPU may larger virtual experiences in real-time. That means that it can support high-quality experiences without requiring users to download larger files, install software or use high-powered devices. The Pros of Pixel Streaming Pixel streaming has several advantages: End-users benefit from reduced local device demands, as pixel streaming efficiently renders high-quality graphics on robust server-grade hardware, This ensures a visually engaging user experience and elevates the overall visual quality, creating a compelling immersive environment. High-Quality Graphics: Commonly associated with high-end gaming experiences, Unreal Engine stands out as being easy to use for creating high-quality graphics. Offering both fidelity and user-friendly features, it comes with tools for automating optimization and simulations, simplifying and speeding up the process for developers. Unreal Engine: In our tests, pixel-streamed MetaHuman avatars implemented through Unreal 5.3 proved to be highly realistic and customizable. This flexibility allows users and enterprises to modify avatars according to their preferences, enhancing the customization aspect of the immersive experience. High-Quality Avatars: Pixel streaming enables users to access graphics-intensive applications on various devices, including low-powered ones. The offloading of rendering tasks to servers liberates users from the constraints of local hardware, promoting inclusivity across different devices.\ Device Independence: The Cons of Pixel Streaming However, there are challenges: Pixel streaming's efficiency relies on a robust internet connection, making it bandwidth-intensive. This dependency may pose limitations, particularly for users with slower connections or those concerned about data usage costs.\ Bandwidth Dependency: The issue of latency can affect the seamless flow of the experience. Delays in data transmission, often due to the geographical distance between the user and the cloud hardware may negatively impact the experience. Latency Challenges: Implementing pixel streaming necessitates a robust server infrastructure, leading to high operational costs for maintaining and scaling server farms. The financial aspect becomes a crucial consideration in balancing the benefits of the technology with its maintenance expenses. Server Infrastructure Costs: The economic factor plays a pivotal role in evaluating the suitability of pixel streaming for specific use cases. Rendering graphics in the cloud can be extremely costly at scale,, and as user numbers and engagement time increase, so do the associated costs, requiring a careful cost-benefit analysis. Cost & Scalability: WebGPU: Pros and Cons WebGPU was specifically created to unlock the potential of modern graphics hardware, allowing developers to harness the full power of modern GPUs for rendering and computation tasks within the web browser – no fancy gaming console or a revved-up computer required. The previous iteration, WebGL, can also render 3D graphics in the browser, but only at low fidelity. The Pros of WebGPU WebGPU stands out in a few core areas: WebGPU enables web applications to directly tap into GPU capabilities, fostering more efficient graphics rendering and computation. Low Latency: Unlike Pixel Streaming, WebGPU doesn't demand expensive cloud hardware or robust internet connections. This cost-effective approach facilitates scalability, allowing a large user base without significant costs. Cost & Scalability: WebGPU supports advanced rendering techniques, such as ray tracing and high dynamic range (HDR), enabling significantly improved visuals through dynamic lighting, reflections, and shadows. High visual fidelity allows brands to create truly immersive experiences that captivate users and eliminate any lingering metaverse skepticism. Visual Fidelity. The Cons of WebGPU Even so, WebGPU has a few limitations, namely: The widespread adoption of WebGPU faces a hurdle in the form of limited browser support. As of today, not all web browsers fully embrace WebGPU, posing a compatibility challenge for developers, at least in the short term. Limited Browser Support: WebGPU's low-level nature necessitates a deeper understanding of GPU programming. This characteristic potentially increases the learning curve for developers, demanding a higher level of technical proficiency. Learning Curve: The absence of tools like Unreal Engine prolongs the development time for immersive experiences on WebGPU. Developers often find themselves working with less advanced 3D software such as PlayCanvas and Babylon.js, contributing to extended project timelines. Development Time: Direct GPU access raises security concerns, emphasizing the need for meticulous implementation. Poorly developed applications could expose vulnerabilities that might be exploited for malicious purposes. Security Concerns: WebGPU applications currently lack top-end avatar options comparable to MetaHuman. The local rendering capacity falls short of handling the same complex 3D graphics as Pixel Streaming, resulting in less photorealistic avatars. This limitation may impact the overall visual richness of WebGPU-powered applications. Avatars: So which is better: Pixel streaming or WebGPU? The choice between Pixel Streaming and WebGPU comes down to the specific use case: every application is different and should have its ideal architecture, based on that application’s unique needs and end-user expectations.
