The Pixel Icon Library by HackerNoon This open-source collection of was designed using a 24px grid for perfect alignment and consistency, thereby enriching your web/app/product/page/life experience. Inspired by HackerNoon’s retro design vibe, these icons encapsulate the essence of the internet's golden era. Pixelated Icons The Concept Behind Our Pixel Icon Library As designers, we often seek solutions to streamline our processes. At HackerNoon, we initially turned to Font Awesome icons to add the necessary functionality and aesthetics to the site. These icons served us well by offering consistency and a wide range of options. However, by relying on a pre-existing library, we could no longer service our brand identity as it evolved. Our founders, and , initially proposed the idea of transitioning to an in-house Icon Library during one of our product meetings. This involved deciding on the level of detail, illustration style, and mood we wanted our icons to convey. Establishing this foundation ensured consistency throughout the library. For the level of detail, we opted for a minimalist approach and aimed for clean icons. We ensured the icons would not create visual clutter when scaled, which helped us eliminate unnecessary details. Our Illustration Style was particularly inspired by the . The retro, 80s-inspired pixel block design style is perfectly in line with our brand. This ensured the design language was consistent with the overall visual identity. We call them the Pixelated Icons. HackerNoon logo To maintain consistency, we opted for a 24px grid. (A 24px grid is considered ideal when designing icons since most system icons are displayed at 24x24). This enabled us to create icons for viewing at 100% scale with pixel-perfect accuracy by providing us with: A 22px live area for icon content And 1px of padding surrounding the live area Ideation & Sketching The ideation process began with listing the functions represented by the current icons and their respective use cases. We then brainstormed how we could redesign icons for these functionalities. And then followed up with quick doodles and sketches. These rough sketches helped us visualize the icons on a smaller scale, allowing for faster iterations and discarding of ideas that didn't fit. Designing the Pixelated Icons The next crucial step was converting these hand-drawn concepts into pixelated icons. This phase primarily involved using Adobe Illustrator to create these pixelated icons and subsequently exporting them in different formats and sizes to test scalability. We began by importing these rough sketches into Illustrator. We then created a 24px grid using the Grid Tool to begin the pixelation process. We utilized the Live Paint Tool and filled out each square that had >50% of space occupied. Once we were satisfied with the design, we expanded the Live Paint (Object Menu → Expand) to form shapes. Next, we utilized the Shape Builder Tool to simplify these shapes, and voilà! Our pixelated icon was ready. We then exported the icon as SVG, PNG at 12px, 16px, 24px, and 48px. (We selected these sizes based on the use cases we listed during the ideation phase) Moreover, we documented specific details about the icons, such as their type. Currently, we have three types: (Fill), , and Icons. There is another type for those icons that don't fall under the first three, namely the . We chose Figma Community File and a GitHub Repository for this purpose. Here’s how we prepared everything: We organized the icons into four sets based on their type: Solid, Regular, Light, and Brand Logos, making it easier for users to search for specific icons. Grouping and Organizing: We established a clear and descriptive naming convention to make it easier for users to identify icons. This included an introduction to the Pixel Icon Library, information on all possible methods to use these pixelated icons in your project, licensing details, well-defined contributing guidelines, and other special considerations. I joined The Markup in late August as editor-in-chief, and this week I did a fireside chat on “ ”—at a conference for people who work the digital advertising and marketing industry. Yep. Scrutinizing Big Tech inside I talked about the Meta Pixel with , managing editor of AdExchanger, and encouraged everyone in the room to and see what data it collects. Allison Schiff self-audit whether their company uses the pixel I didn’t know what kind of reception I’d get. Much of our work at The Markup scrutinizes advertising technology, and we don’t pull our accountability punches. Since we our first large-scale, crowdsourced study of Facebook’s pixel in January 2022, we’ve found websites across multiple industries— , , , and the —transmitting sensitive information to Facebook through the Meta Pixel, a Facebook tracking tool that helps site operators better target their advertising. kicked off hospitals telehealth companies tax preparation sites U.S. Department of Education There’s no question that the pixel is pervasive, but there’s good news. These stories created nearly immediate change. Many companies have either removed the pixel entirely or limited the scope of what data gets collected. So far, our reporters have collectively contacted more than a , telling them what specific information we found their sites sending to Facebook. hundred organizations We’ve received all kinds of responses from companies, but one always stands out. It boils down to: We didn’t know. Last week, our community and social media manager, Maria Puertas, and our infrastructure engineer, Simon Fondrie-Teitler, about how to be proactive about user privacy when it comes to the Meta Pixel. Here’s one excerpt I want to highlight: wrote a piece together Don’t be surprised if many people in your organization don’t know about the Meta Pixel. Many of the organizations we found leaking sensitive user information to Facebook seemed to be unaware of what exactly they were doing or the potential ramifications. —companies said they didn’t know they were collecting this kind of data from their users and promptly deactivated pixel tracking parameters. In certain cases—like that of tax preparation site Ramsey Solutions “We did NOT know and were never notified that personal tax information was being collected by Facebook from the Pixel,” Ramsey Solutions said in an email to The Markup. “As soon as we found out, we immediately informed TaxSlayer to deactivate the Pixel from Ramsey SmartTax.” Ramsey Solutions wasn’t the only organization that removed the pixel after being contacted by our reporters for comment. After we notified hospitals and health systems of the Meta Pixel’s presence, either from portions of their websites or altogether. 35 of 40 removed it Major tax companies to capture less data. The U.S. Department of Education changed its pixel’s settings to on FAFSA applicants. changed the pixels’ settings capture less information If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the last decade, it’s that unintentional harm is very common (as are unintentional bad consequences). As investigative journalists, our job is to hold people and organizations accountable for their decisions and the harm those decisions have caused, intentional or not. In addition to that, our goal is to have an impact and create real, positive change in the world. The organizations we write about aren’t monoliths—they’re made up of many people, and lots of people inside companies want to do the right thing (such as protect their users’ privacy).
