I was just entering the bootstrapped indie maker world After looking around into best practices, I set these three targets to reach by the end of 2023: → Grow big on social media and blogs → Master SEO → Build and launch free directories for traffic 1. Grow big on social media and blogs I began by sharing stuff everywhere. I did this for weeks but got nothing: no likes, comments, views, or followers. I found a tip: I chose X because I saw Pieter Levels and Marc Louvion were there, hitting millions of views. "Stick to one platform until followers grow.” After six months, I got it. One platform is like one product. Start with ten followers—post and watch reactions. Look for patterns in attention-grabbing content—iterate based on feedback. That's a lot. It took a lot of time. But it was worth it. I wrote and replied 10,000 times. My brain had rewired, and my content creator intuition turned into a pretty solid machine. This month, I hit my goal on X - almost 10k followers and 6 million views in 3 months. and go wild on all platforms. Next Stage: defocus from X Started from scratch there with no karma or followers. Wrap up on social media, For nine months, I posted and replied 10,000 times. All my energy went into one platform before spreading to others. On day 30, I only had 135 followers with no interaction. But something told me to keep going. And so I did. 2. Master the SEO. Last April, I was clueless about SEO. Reading a lot online, I learned about it. Free traffic seemed like too good to be true. However, after more research and writing many articles, We held on to hope: "SEO just needs time.” May brought small wins but not enough for all our hard work. Yet, I lost hope, to be honest, but my partner convinced me to give it some time, saying - SEO works; it just takes patience. That's when SEObot was born – an AI tool to speed things up. Cuz it was taking too much time. By the end of summer, we saw good progress. 'SEO does take time' proved true! In September, SEO became my main traffic source for some of the projects! One day, I had one where I owned 100 directories which are all famous. I told my team we should make directories to increase our traffic in the future. I couldn't let this idea go, so I built and launched it with friends. The results were great! It turned into the second most famous launchpad in the world for devtools. I dropped the idea Four months later, A rumor about custom gpts gave me another idea - "allgpts,” a directory for them. I decided to try it out. I didn't tell anyone on my team. This was totally secret project which I was sure would fail. But no! It worked really well! It became the most popular gpt directories worldwide, with half a million visitors and 7 million clicks on gpts. It brought the biggest growth to my premium tools just from the links in the footer. This hit made me realize that ignoring directories was wrong. So, using keyword research and 20 domain names, I started launching new directories every week. Next: osssoftware_org turned out to be another hit! It got famous overnight on Hacker News with around 30k users visiting the site just within one day! This proved that ! It’s not quite that either. It would more likely be called “warm emailing” prospects. Yeah, I know, let me explain. The whole gist of this strategy is to make the connections first, either through social media or sites like IndieHackers/ProductHunt/Reddit and the like. After that comes the getting the contact details part. You can start the conversation directly on the platform where you found the people or use any of the many email discovery tools out there like Hunter, Apollo, SeamlessAI, etc. Now, the key part for when you're contacting the person in question is to not sound like a salesman right off the bat. Don’t use the typical lead generation approach of “spray and pray” sending thousands of emails daily and then checking who replied. Instead, you want to use a different and innovative strategy called… Communicating like a normal human being. Seriously, you don’t need to make assumptions that are mostly wrong here. Talk like a friendly person wanting to help with whatever problem the product solves. That works for several reasons. But the main one is that you don’t sound like a desperate sales rep trying to meet the weekly outreach goals. The person who does this better than anyone I know is Ved Rasic, founder of (a LinkedIn CRM). LeadDelta Even if you don’t get customers from that process, you can get people who would recommend you to someone else, or people open to doing business with you in the future. Try SaaS Influencer Marketing While content marketing and email marketing are more well-known marketing practices, going the route of SaaS influencer marketing is one not traveled too often. And you know what they say, do what most people aren’t doing to get the results that most people aren’t getting. But I think I know why this strategy is not so popular or talked about. In a way, it sounds “icky”. Almost like you will be selling out by getting online cringy influencers making posts and hard-pushing your product in people’s faces (kinda like what some people do with YouTube ads). But for everything one can try, there are many ways to do it wrong and a few to do it right. In this case, you can do it tactfully by only working with people whose vibe aligns with your product and your content. You can do this on different platforms like , , , and such. A good deal of research will be necessary to see which platform has better chances of bringing high-quality traffic to the product and what types of influencers you want to work with. YouTube IG TikTok And if you still think that what I’m saying is too “fluffy” or too good on paper but doesn’t apply in real life… Let me give you an example of it in action. Even Pieter had not tried that strategy before (until very recently). He also mentioned in a podcast that he talked with a TikTok influencer to make posts about PhotoAI (his startup about AI pictures) and MRR went from $12k to $40k from that alone. So yeah, the possibilities are almost endless… Create an interactive product walkthrough A great product walkthrough can help turn visitors into paying users. The walkthrough can also become a marketing asset to drive conversions up and be a literal “show don’t tell” strategy. And yes, I’m talking about an interactive walkthrough of the main workflow, not just a recorded video of someone going through the process. The whole fact of people being able to click and poke around can give a potential customer a feel for how it works and what it would be like when using it as part of the daily work (or whatever other frequency). The other benefit of this strategy is that it can make it easier for people to understand how the interface is structured and how the features work. You know, stuff like “if I click on this tab or this option, I get presented with this data or these controls and then I can go back to the dashboard clicking this other tab”. Just from that you can see how people would need less of a user manual or knowledge base. But, of course, you can have one for those other things not shown in the walkthrough. And if the product walkthrough is something people have access to even before signing up, they could pretty much have done the onboarding process to the platform without realizing it. They’re one step closer to becoming a full-fledged user right there. And no, this doesn’t have to be a super complicated thing to implement for the product. There are already tools out there that make this process pretty easy. One that comes to mind now is called Arcade(dot)software. Other “Outside-the-Box” Ideas If all the other methods discussed above weren’t enough, here are some more unusual ideas to try. For example, host Twitter Spaces instead of the traditional “online webinars”.  I know Alessio Matara from LiveLogue has been killing it in that Space (get it? (s). Alright, ok. Moving on…) Space You can collaborate with other founders in your niche that provide complimentary services. For instance, if your product is a cold DM Twitter tool, you can partner up with someone who runs a Twitter analytics tool. Or maybe not Twitter but instead LinkedIn, same idea but a different platform. You can also appear on other people’s podcasts or do guest blogging to grow the brand, increase exposure, and get some mentions and also backlinks. Something else to try is to build features as if they were standalone micro products that are free to use and launch them on ProductHunt. These products can create buzz and get people to discover the main product through the use of the free ones. See if you can implement a referral program. Dropbox is the classic example here. Users were rewarded with a sizable amount of free space by referring others to the service. (I know of people who referred their classmates to get lots of free space.) Depending on your style and what you’re comfortable with you can also employ the strategy of “meme marketing”. That’s where you use the entertaining and potentially viral nature of memes to spread awareness of your product and the problems it solves for a specific audience. And hey, if you’re feeling daring enough, you can take the marketing out in the real world. Consider going to events in the niche like workshops or conferences. You can either find people who make up your target audience or potential collaborators whom to join forces with. This is just a sample of the many activities you can do to bring more awareness to your SaaS and reach a wider audience than the one captured in the first launch. If you were not building FullGap, what would you be doing? If I were not building FullGap, my focus would have been entirely on running FourthCanvas, which is still going strong. And if we're to be building something else, it would be a product to automate the management of brand assets, aiming to democratize and simplify the process. On a personal level, if I wasn't engaged in either FullGap or FourthCanvas, I'd probably be involved in sports, perhaps as a football coach or pursuing other sports-related interests. Fa: At the moment, how do you measure your success? What are your metrics? Fa: Currently, our primary metric for measuring success is the number of projects managed through FullGap. We are fast approaching the milestone of 500 projects, and we are excited about the increasing interest in our platform for both paid and unpaid projects. Many users start with unpaid projects, and as they become familiar with FullGap's capabilities, they will eventually transition to using it for paid freelance projects. We even have users leveraging FullGap to organize non-commercial initiatives, such as managing school final-year projects or developing personal portfolios. The early stages of adoption are critical, and we aim to become the go-to tool for project management in the freelance community. The number of projects managed is our crucial indicator of adoption. It signifies that users are finding value in FullGap, providing us with valuable feedback and spreading the word to their circles. Although the value of projects managed already amounts to approximately $150,000, we consider the adoption rate as the most important metric for us at this early stage. Where do you think your growth will be by next year? Fa: Looking ahead, we have ambitious growth plans, and we project managing over 10,000 projects by next year. This milestone is a tipping point for us, as it signifies FullGap becoming the default choice for freelancers when managing their projects. While celebrating the current count of 500 projects, we recognize that widespread adoption and market dominance require reaching a higher threshold. By becoming the norm for freelancers, we aim to see exponential growth and widespread usage of FullGap's project management solution, bringing us closer to the ambitious goal of managing 10,000 projects within the next year. What's your biggest threat? What's the biggest challenge you've had building your startup? And then how do you overcome these threats or challenges? Our most significant challenge lies in the psychographic tendencies of freelancers when it comes to organizational habits. While FullGap is designed to simplify project management, not all freelancers naturally possess an inclination to be efficient and organized. I mean, several freelancers are organized and they were just looking for a tool. But then there's also a percentage of freelancers who are not. But everybody wouldn't mind being organized if it was easier. To address this, we are adopting two strategies. Firstly, we focus on advocacy and education through our content and marketing efforts. We aim to showcase the immense value freelancers can achieve in their careers by being more organized and professional in their work. By highlighting the positive impact of efficient project management, we hope to encourage freelancers to embrace these practices. Secondly, we recognize the importance of making organization easier for freelancers. FullGap continuously seeks to simplify its features and processes. For instance, we have plans to integrate AI, which will assist users in creating project breakdowns and suggesting pre-designed contracts. By automating some of the organizational tasks, we make it more feasible for freelancers to adopt FullGap as their go-to project management tool. Tell us about your first paying customer. Additionally, what are your revenue projections for the next year, two years, or five years? As of now, FullGap is in its early feedback phase, and we have not onboarded our first paying customer. However, when we officially launch in October, we plan to switch to a paid system with a monthly subscription fee of $4. We have conducted market research, and many users have expressed their willingness to pay up to $10 for FullGap's services, but we are starting conservatively with the $4 pricing model. Looking ahead, we envision substantial growth and global impact. Our goal is to reach one million customers, establishing FullGap as a major player in the industry. We also plan to expand beyond the Nigerian market and introduce other currency options for users worldwide. FullGap's unique value proposition sets us apart from marketplace platforms like Fiverr and Upwork, as we focus on efficient project management rather than client acquisition. By catering to freelancers managing projects from any source, we tap into a vast and underserved market, positioning FullGap for substantial growth in the years to come. We distinguish ourselves from platforms like Fiverr and Upwork by addressing different aspects of the freelance process. While these marketplaces focus on helping freelancers find clients. FullGap is designed majorly for freelancers who also secure projects outside of these marketplaces. FullGap steps in after clients have been acquired to provide comprehensive project management solutions. It is important to note that people getting projects on Fiver or Upwork are just a small percentage of all the freelance gigs done worldwide. Unlike the insider tools offered by marketplaces, FullGap is designed to cater to freelancers regardless of where they obtain their clients. The value of FullGap lies in efficient project management, ensuring freelancers can serve their clients effectively and retain them for future collaborations. This makes FullGap a versatile and all-encompassing project management tool, filling a significant gap in the freelance market. What I Think of FullGap Upon critically analyzing the interview with FullGap's founder, Victor Fatanmi (Fa), it becomes evident that while FullGap is targeting a relevant and growing market of freelancers, there are foreseeable difficulties that the platform might face in reaching its ambitious goals. Firstly, the competition in the project management space for freelancers is already significant. While FullGap claims to differentiate itself by focusing on project management rather than client acquisition, it still competes with established platforms like Trello, Asana, and ClickUp, which are widely used and trusted by freelancers and businesses alike. Convincing users to switch from their existing tools to FullGap will require a compelling value proposition and a seamless onboarding process, as users may be reluctant to disrupt their existing workflows.
