Yet, there was a single voice against it. One of my friends thought he would have better chances with the Tommy gun. Our eyebrows were sky-high. Who’s this guy? Did he have too much beer? Tommy Gun — My Growth Marketing Man He owed us a huge explanation. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait too long. We all knew that he was a helpless marketing enthusiast. Yet, this was too much according to any movie or growth marketing standards you wish to apply. So, according to his interpretation, when you use a sniper is just like you’re applying a targeted growth marketing strategy. You aren’t going to waste too much ammo, that’s for sure. You focus your attention and your hit your target or targets with high precision and a probability of success. On the other side, you have an excellent example of spray and pray marketing — the Tommy gun. You’re shooting like crazy, but it’s not very likely that you’ll hit your target at all. That’s the perfect parallel with the spray and pray growth marketing. You do your thing and hope for the best. Needless to say, we were completely shocked, but also deeply intrigued, by this completely unexpected marketing parallelism. It was about time to leave the movie and the Prohibition discussion arena and focus entirely on growth marketing. When you put it like this S&P (spray and pray) marketing really sounds like a completely unreasonable tactic. It’s just like you have a gigantic net and you’re fishing across the entire ocean. You may catch something, but you may also walk back home empty hands. It doesn’t matter that the World Wide Web provides you with countless affordable alternatives. Yet, there’s something called the “High Volume-Sensitive Consumers,” who will simply and elegantly ignore or block your S&P random bullets. Nowadays, it’s really hard to imagine that S&P could actually get you something worthy of all the trouble. I also believe that you can hardly find pure forms of S&P or targeted growth marketing. Yet, if you plan to approach all Millennials or Baby Boomers in your “cyber neighborhood,” then there’s no way to avoid the S&P stigmatization. On the other hand, if you want to get the maximum of your targeted group with a symbolic investment, you don’t have to be afraid. No one is going to put “scarlet letters” S&P on you. Crypto Trading Bots - The Definitive Guide For 2021

“Hell is when other people are fake” — Jean-Paul Sartre writing in 2020. Have you ever read Jean-Paul Sartre’s famous play No Exit? The main character, Garcin, cries out “Hell is—other people!” after realizing hell is not torture racks and fire, but interpersonal strife manufactured by Lucifer to push sufferers to the brink of psychological collapse. Physical torture would be infinitely easier to bear, Garcin declares, than the vicissitudes of continuous socialization. If you had roommates in quarantine, you might relate. Garcin is trapped in a room with two others; but he knows they are real even if he doesn’t like them. In Sartre’s hell, reality itself is not distorted, even if its setup is contrived. Even Sartre failed to imagine a hell where no part of reality can be trusted: A world where synthetic media, otherwise known as deep-fakes, fractures social trust to the point where a Common Truth is nothing but a quaint ideal of yore. 250 million Americans (80 percent) are on social media, 3.5 billion worldwide. Why? Because it is so much fun. There is no imaginable level of societal derangement that will lead individuals to give up the mother of all toys em-mass. Much ink has been spilled on the problem of fake news, including a major Netflix docu The Social Dilemma (which we wrote about in an ). But if fake news is a strong wind blowing against democracy, synthetic media is a category-five hurricane. Social media, the “digital equivalent of a town square“ as Zuckerberg put it, is awash in sensationalization. Content is arm twisted for a higher viral coefficient, and not to spread the truth. earlier story Platforms so far have not been held accountable for the content users publish, thanks to Section 230, the immunity granting provision added to the Communications Decency Act in 1996, back when the internet was a bunny-hopping digital arcadia. Section 230 states: “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” Jack Dorsey (Twitter), Zuckerberg (Facebook), and Sundar Pichai (Google) are on October 28th to state their case for this controversial exemption. testifying before Congress Fake news shows up as exaggerated or falsified articles or videos with the occasional doctored image. Usually, with a little digging, you can find something close to the truth because the raw events, videos, and audio, are still largely trustworthy. Synthetic media changes that. Synthetic media obliterates any pretense to the Truth, even for the savvy user. Thanks to a technological breakthrough in a kind of machine learning called (GANs), computers can manufacture images that are indistinguishable from reality. A GAN so powerful that he looks like a real person: A guy who’s had his heartbroken, bought a house, loves Shakespeare. All the emotional intimacy of human beings is there, yet it’s fake. The proverbial “uncanny valley,” the idea that emotional connection with a synthetic human will never match “the real thing,” is filling in. Even cat videos, the symbol of the benign early days of social media, are no longer trustworthy. Does this matter? Maybe not. But it shows the power of synthetic media, and at the very least, it degrades the quality of the entertainment to have to constantly question: “Is this a real cat drinking straight out of the kitchen faucet?” To show how fast synthetic media is advancing, Martin Scorsese’s film “The Irishman,” released in 2019, spent millions de-aging their septarian stars Robert De-Niro and Joe Pesci. In the two to three-years since filming the Irishman, now does a better job than Hollywood studios did just a couple of years ago. Free content generation tools allow long-tail content creators, like small YouTubers, to compete with the big dogs. But there are private and public actors committed to maximizing the chaos and social unrest in the world, and as a result, these tools are a force for evil as much as they are a force for good, clean fun. Where we get Sartre-level is when we start seeing fake videos of political candidates doing unseemingly things that make Watergate seem like Nixon just kissed a baby. And can you imagine what a fake video the US president announcing a nuclear strike against Russia could do to humanity? In a very short number of years, these fake videos will appear indistinguishable from reality. I was at CES 2020 (with 200,000 in-person attendees! Simpler times…) where an arms race played out on the showroom floor between deep-fake AI detectors and deep-fake generators. The financial incentives are so heavily on the side of the content generators that it is all but impossible to imagine the detectors keeping up. It’s as if the US entered a cold war with the Vatican. So what’s the path forward? The next step for users is to educate themselves on both the threats and the possible solutions. We’ve already discussed threats, here are a couple of solutions. , a San Diego based photo, and video verification company, , a large chip manufacturer for Android phones, to attach meta-data to photos taken by smartphones that include information on when, where, and with what phone the picture was taken. Cryptographic digital signatures attached to images act as a form of digital watermark that can’t be altered, proving an image or video’s authenticity. Blockchain, in particular, is a spectacularly powerful way to store digital watermarks, and track the provenance of a digital asset, like a video, to make sure all the changes and alterations to it are publicly auditable on a decentralized ledger not controlled by any single person or entity. Trust is synonymous with having access to the truth, and there is no word more central to a well-functioning society than trust. There are powerful tools that can help us re-establish trust in a world overrun with deep-fakes, but we must embed these tools at the level of hardware, and commit to using tools that are decentralized, and user-centric. Pulling Back From The Deep-Fake Crisis

Three significant new trends in cyber-attacks have emerged from the Covid-19 emergency. Firstly, a new generation of attack software which has been developing since last summer has come of age and   been deployed. Secondly, the business model for extracting payment from victims has changed so that there are multiple demands for payments of different kinds, including auctioning off data. Thirdly, the kinds of clients that the gangs are targeting seems to have shifted. If you are going to auction data of the data has to be interesting. Celebrity data is the new commodity in the ransom ware market. These new developments are being driven by the same economic pressures that are changing the straight economy. A report by Chain Analysis in April 2020 showed that the number and success of cyber attacks had not markedly increased during the pandemic and the revenues paid to ransom ware attackers had actually declined. As the number of ransom ware attacks and the payments made to the criminal gangs have both dipped, so the gangs have responded to the downturn with innovation. A new generation of ransom ware The ransom ware used in recent attacks is called Revil. Which is also sometimes called Sodinokibi or Sodin. It is being used by a gang called Golden Garden who have their origins in the Rock Phish gang. The Eastern Europe groups that deploy these attacks so successfully, have morphed into multiple identities and used every more sophisticated forms of mal and ransomware. The most colorful character among this group, Evgeniy Bogachev, the Tiger King of hacking, is supposed to have retired to his Black Sea resort home town with US sanctions and a $4m bounty on his head but even if he is not still active many of his old crew are. These same groups had used the previously most sophisticated attack software called Grand Crab. It looks likely that Grand Crab was retired at the end of May last year and Revil has replaced it. The 33-year-old is thought to be the mastermind behind arguably the most sophisticated cyber-crime network the world has ever seen. Twitter user evgeniy Mikhailovich. A new business model? The new development is that not only are these gangs using new kinds of attack weapons, they are also deploying a variety of new business models to extract multiple potential pay days from their victims. Traditionally the hackers would use ransom ware to steal the data of a target company and then demand that the company pay a ransom for the return of their data. At the beginning of the year Travelex was hacked via an unpatched VPN connection and a stolen email address and password. The exchange company lost $25m when it was forced to stay closed and is reported to have paid the hackers between $2.3m  to recover the data. The traditional model of payment seen in the Travelex attack allows the attacker to only get one pay off. The first element in the new business model is the request for multiple payments. Firstly, for the recovery of the data and then a further payment to delete rather than release the files. After the victim company’s files are decrypted. The first payment gives the company the decryptor code or key so that the data can be restored but the attacker still has copies of the files. The second payment is for the files to be deleted. The threat is that if the payment is not made the files will be published and can then be accessed by competitors. At the end of last year, and for the first time, one of the angs released 10% of a companies data to try and leverage the additional payments for deletion. g A sample of files stolen from Allied Universal released by hackers. The third element is the auctioning off of the data to competitors via dark web sites. REvil set up an auction site at their Happy Blog space and offered the files of a Canadian Agricultural production company. “The victim firm’s auction page says a successful bidder will get three databases and more than 22,000 files stolen from the agricultural company. It sets the minimum deposit at $5,000 in virtual currency, with the starting price of $50,000.” REvil’s auction house. A new type of target These trends in attacks all come together in two recent hacks that give a clue to the new kind of target and the new kind of extortion that is emerging. They also high light the weakness of the cyber security systems in firms that hold the data of a large number of wealthy and high profile individuals. The new business model for the ransom ware gangs: The celebrity data hack. In the first case one of the largest and most successful entertainment law firms, Grubman Shire Meiselas, in New York had data about a range of clients as diverse as Barry Manilow, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Lil Nas X, The Weekend, U2 and Drake. Other clients listed are Priyanka Chopra, Robert De Niro, Sofía Vergara, LeBron James,  Mike Tyson, President Trump and Lady Gaga stolen. The hackers demanded an initial $21m for the return of 756 gigabytes of data including contracts with many of the weird and wonderful riders stars insist on, NEDs that they force their personal staff to sign, and personal emails. Some taster documents have been released and the tit for tat game is on. The hackers have increased their demands to $21m. The Grubman hack has been blamed on Covid-19 but it is not clear how it occurred. The senior partner at the firm, Allen Grubman, is said to be refusing to negotiate. The hacker group claim to have sold the Trump documents, while Grubman denies there were any Trump related documents taken. Their auction side it set up and ready to roll. The Auction site for the Grubman Hack. There has now been a second attack on a celebrity data treasure trove. The prominent London entertainment law firm Lee and Thompson has been hacked and a significant amount of sensitive client data has been taken. Lee and Thompson’s website says that the firm acts for leading actors, musicians, producers and entrepreneurs. Their clients include David Beckham and Harry Styles, member of the One Direction boy band. The Lee and Thompson hack seems to have originated in its acquisition of another law firm, Montgomery Barker in 2017. The credentials of Montgomery Barker’s founder were compromised when sales intelligence firm Apollo’s database was breached in May of 2018 and again in October 2019 when People Data Labs was hacked. As a result of the Apollo hack the private gmail address of the founder of Montgomery Barker, Sarah Barker, and her quintessentially English password- “marmalade”- became a tradeable commodity for hackers and was published on the dark web. The team using REvil will have worked their way from the private email account into the Montgomery Barker’s server and from there into Lee and Jones’s IT as the two firms integrated. Documents taken include client details, billing correspondence, contracts and non-disclosure agreements. There has been no public comment by Lee and Thompson. The Gold Garden team deploying REvil are now in a win win situation. They have hit either by accident or by careful planning on a precious commodity: celebrity data. If these two law firms do not pay they will lose clients and face lawsuits. If they do pay then they will have to pay twice, once for the decryptor and once for the delete. If they do not pay, then their dark web version of abay, will see them auction the largest horde of celebrity memorabilia, intimate documentation and private insight ever to surface. And who is going to bid? Every gossip and media organisations on the planet would like this archive. The hacker teams recently made a forced switch for payment to new harder to detect cryptocurrency, in preparation perhaps for the chequebooks of the world’s media.

Three New Dimensions to Ransomware Attacks Emerge During Pandemic

Having learned a lot of lessons along the journey, I thought of sharing all the wears and tears that I’ve been through in the hope of helping other makers like me. What is Product Hunt? “Product Hunt surfaces the best new products, every day. It’s a place for product-loving enthusiasts to share and geek out about the latest mobile apps, websites, hardware projects, and tech creations” — Product Hunt Basically, Product Hunt is where makers showcase their products and where general people update themselves with new innovations every day. The charm of Product Hunt lies in its Today page, where it lists all the products that makers launch within the day. What all makers dream of is getting their product featured on the “Popular” page, and ultimately, as top 5 because they’ll be featured in PH’s newsletter, getting more sign-ups and feedback. Why is there a hype? The race to the top spots is so challenging that it quickly becomes viral on the Internet. An “App of the Day” badge is like a certificate of the reputation for newly-launched products, so people are making a real fuss about it. Consequently, it created an impression that if you’re a maker, you have to know and to post on PH once. From my point of view, PH has its own uniqueness and only suits certain purposes. If you’re a maker and you’re on the fence about whether launching an app on PH is worth the effort, here’s my answer: Yes. you want to gain some momentum for your new product, receive feedbacks and suggestions of the other makers. If There’s a probability you’ll get noticed by PH team like , , … They will definitely ask tough questions to challenge you, or simply retweet your products with deadly cute cats 🙀🙀. If you want to know how much your current users love you (🤣). If In my case, I was really surprised to receive a lot of testimonials from my most loyal users. It’s truly heart-warming and actually surprising because they had never told me that before. Thanks Marc Copes! No. you want a source of sustainable organic traffic to your website. Even the most upvoted products on PH will have to spare the throne for newer ones. The list is updated daily so technically even hottest products won’t stay there forever. If you don’t love cats (Product Hunt is a cat-lover community, don’t ya know? (look at !) If their mascot you want to expand your customer base massively. From our experience, the charm of PH is that it connects you to certain connections (media, influencers, power users) that you can rely upon later, not pulling thousands of new sign-ups. If For your reference, here are our numeric gains from 2 successful PH launches Before you come to the CAT approach, I just want to make sure one thing. If your product is already receiving thousands of visits to the landing page and thousands of download, this post (I’m afraid if you continue you’ll laugh at my numbers…) is not for you But if you’re an indie dev looking for a way to get more public attention, then, you may want to check out some benefits of launching on PH :) 😸A huge burst of traffic to the landing page (Habitify for macOS launch) 1,665 visits on launch day 8818 visits in the course of 7 days 11,958 users in the course of 14 days $3000 sales (both iOS and macOS) in 14 days The red box indicates PH launch after effects. As mac App Store didn’t provide analytics at the time of our launch, it’s hard to measure the quality of the traffic. Let’s assume that users who are interested in macOS also have an iPhone and they visited the App Store. In the period of Jun-Sep, this launch’s traffic has a significantly higher conversion rate. PH traffic has the conversion rate of , measured in 14 days after the launch. It’s almost 8 times higher than the ! nearly 31% industry average conversion rate I don’t know why there’s traffic coming from zapier.com… The same magic happens on Twitter! For the first time in history, Habitify has reached over 20K impressions in July only (our Launch month), which is monstrously hugeee compared to 3–4K per month previously! There’s no such thing as negative feedback because every comment will give us a little more insight into the users. My main strategy for the launch is to find as many Habitify supporters as possible and ask one by one to help promote the product. It turned out the effect was trivial, but I gained something else. I am quite taken aback to realize that Twitter is a really cool platform to make friends and get to know people in the same field. By being active on Twitter I know some of my users are really keen on checking my tweets and retweets them! (thanks and !) I suggest taking a look at your own product and your timeline (and again, if you love cats or not 🐈) Product Hunt launch takes time and effort. It’s not a one-off game. Definitely not where you can even think about cheating. Hm… Okay. Fine. I thought about cheating, okay? But as karma goes I got backfired by my own dirty intents, so, nope, don’t try that at home.
