But in the case of the video game crash of 1983, the concept of putting out low quality products was so widespread that it led to the entire gaming industry almost collapsing. When you’ve got a deadline to meet, and money has been spent on a product in terms of marketing, research and development, and overhead costs necessary to keep the business afloat, it’s easy to try and cut corners. The problem with cutting corners is that it often leads to a much lower quality product in the long run. Low quality products damage consumer trust in your company, your products, and your brands. Subsequently, this would drive consumers from you to your competitors, which in most cases just lowers a company’s revenue for the year. Arcade games were a favorite pastime of young and teenage children across America. It was common to see kids dropped off at arcade centers after school or on the weekends with a pocket full of quarters for an afternoon full of arcade fun. As gaming grew in popularity, home consoles started to release, that would allow gamers to play at home instead of having to drive out to the arcade every time they wanted to play Pac-Man. Millions and millions of dollars were being made in gaming and it seemed like everyone wanted a piece of the pie. The popularity of gaming was so high that companies that were involved in industries that had nothing to do with gaming, such as Quaker oats started investing in games and console development. And that attention is a large part of what led up to the industry as a whole crashing. The video game crash of 1983 actually looked rather similar to the streaming wars that are taking place today. Every company wanted to have their own platform to try and generate as much revenue as possible. Companies back then wanted as much profit as they could generate off of gaming, so multiple companies started developing and releasing their own gaming consoles.  The Mattel Aquarius, the Videopac+ G7400, and Super Cassette Vision were just a few of the consoles on the market. There were also a plethora of developers and development teams releasing games for these different consoles on the market. Releasing licensed movie tie-in games was especially popular and lucrative in the industry because children loved going to the movies and seeing their favorite characters on the big screen. The only ways to find out whether a game, or a console were worth the money were to either buy them and play them yourself, or rely on word of mouth. Eventually word of mouth turned sour, and that led directly into the video game crash of 1983. Lead Up To The Video Game Crash In the early 1980s the United States was undergoing an economic recession, which meant that there was less money to go around, especially when it came to leisure activities. As an end result, consumers were more conscious about what they were spending their money on, and how much money they were spending. More conservative spending caused a problem for gaming publishers and console makers that had invested tens of millions of dollars into games and consoles but weren’t seeing the return on their profits that they were hoping for. The solution offered was to spend less time and resources on games and essentially just put them out onto the market. Because the games were released on a shoestring budget, it’d be easy to make a profit if companies could get consumers to buy, which is why licensed tie-in games were so popular. But eventually word of mouth started catching up to publishers, because people started talking about how poor quality the games being released were. One of the most infamous examples is Atari’s E.T. The Extra Terrestrial movie tie-in that was developed in only 6 weeks to be released alongside the film. Once consumers started seeing that the games being released weren’t worth the money they’d cost to buy, consumer spending shifted from home consoles and arcades to home computers. Computers were expensive, just like consoles were, but computers were more versatile, because they could play games, but they could also be used for work, so they were a more worthwhile expenditure. The funds that used to be spent on gaming being diverted to other products led to the video game crash of 1983. Video Game Crash of 1983 Nintendo was founded in Japan and had been making video games since the 1970s. Its first console didn’t release until 1985 when the NES, a cartridge based game console, hit store shelves. The impact of the NES was felt immediately because of the way that Nintendo ran an extremely tight ship when it came to the games being released on their console. Unlike what console makers had been doing previously, Nintendo only allowed developers that were specifically licensed and had been given permission to develop and release games for the NES. To ensure that this standard was met, Nintendo developed a control chip that would talk to the NES and authenticate the game trying to be played. If that chip wasn’t present or it didn’t pass authentication, the game wouldn’t run. And Nintendo only gave out the control chips to licensed developers, so no one but developers that were handpicked could release games on the NES.
This licensing strategy led to fewer games being released for the NES than its other console counterparts at the time, but it also led to a higher quality of games, and record breaking revenues with the NES selling over 60 million units. Thankfully in this case, the mistakes of the past didn’t lead to the death of the gaming industry, but its salvation through Nintendo and its console development that continues to innovate and set industry standards to this day.

The Nintendo Switch was released worldwide in 2017 and took the gaming landscape by storm. The console itself is a massive success and one of Nintendo’s best-selling consoles ever, having sold over 85 million units, which bodes well for Nintendo considering the commercial failure that was the Wii U. But it also carved out its own unique niche with gamers because it doubled as a home console that can be hooked up to a TV but also a handheld gaming device. At the time in 2017, the premise was revolutionary, and the Switch’s ability to be played anywhere made up for its shortcomings in other areas, namely a lack of powerful hardware. After six years on the market, the console is starting to show its age. The Switch’s hardware is struggling to run games at a consistently playable framerate, and with the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, gamers have been wondering when Nintendo will enter into the current generation of consoles with a new console release. In this article, I’ll explore Nintendo’s console history by analyzing its previous releases and speculate on what the next Nintendo console could be and should offer if it wants to stand out in a crowded console gaming landscape. Nintendo’s Console History Before looking ahead to the future and trying to determine where Nintendo should go with its next release, I’d like to look back to the past at their previous consoles. Nintendo has a long history of creating groundbreaking consoles, and that history starts with the Nintendo Entertainment System, typically called the NES in America, and the Family Computer Disc System, or the Famicom for short, in Japan. The NES was released in 1983, followed by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, the Nintendo 64 in 1996, the Gamecube released in 2001, the Wii came out in 2006, and finally, the Wii U launched in 2012. When looking at the Nintendo family of consoles, three consoles stand head and shoulders above the rest as being the most innovative and impactful: The NES, the WII, the Wii U, and the Switch. The NES quite literally saved the gaming industry after it crashed in 1983 because of Nintendo’s proprietary cartridge designs. Cartridge gaming wasn't anything new when Nintendo made the NES, but the way they designed their console was. Prior to the NES, anyone could make a game for any console, and this led to a number of companies making extremely bad games and selling them as pure cash grabs to try and make as much money as possible. Eventually, gamers got tired of playing poorly developed games, so they stopped buying games and consoles altogether. Nintendo saw this and implemented a chip system in their consoles that required game cartridges to have specific chips in them to be able to interface with the NES and play games. Without those chips, games wouldn’t work on the console, and Nintendo had the final say over what games would and wouldn’t get their stamp of approval. Less games got approval, but that led to a higher quality of game releases, which revitalized the industry in the late 1980s. The Wii came about in 2006 and surprised everyone. Instead of focusing on traditional controller-based gameplay, Wii games were very much based around motion. The Wiimote and its attachment, the Nunchuk, allowed for previously unseen levels of freedom and interaction when playing games. Swinging your controller in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword caused you to actually swing your sword when you were trying to hit an enemy. Motion controls in gaming led to a feeling of immersion because instead of just watching actions playing out on screen, you were physically causing them to happen. The Wii U did for portable console gaming what the Wii did for motion controls in gaming. By creating a gamepad that could either mirror the image on your TV screen or allow you to play the game entirely on the gamepad while someone else used the TV, suddenly portable console gaming became not only possible but viable. There were some limitations, and its limited functionality did lead to it being a commercial failure, but the Wii U’s Gamepad offered something that had never been seen or done before in terms of console gaming. Finally, there’s Nintendo’s latest console release, the Switch, which doubles as both a handheld and a fully portable console that can be attached to and played on a TV. The Switch innovated in so many ways because it improved on almost all of the limitations of the Wii U by giving gamers a better, less bulky experience that was able to be taken anywhere instead of being limited by proximity to a console box. Improved motion controls that took a cue from the Nintendo Wii helped to round out the package. There’s no telling what the future could hold for the next Nintendo console. But Nintendo has a long history of making innovative and sometimes industry-defining consoles and either creating trends in the console market or taking existing ideas and giving them a new spin to make them more popular than ever. What Does The Future Look Like For The Next Nintendo Console? When asking what the next Nintendo console will be, the obvious answer is to wonder whether or not it will be a new iteration of the Switch, which is possible, but there are some pros and cons to that idea. Pros: The Nintendo Switch is already in the hands of millions of gamers worldwide, so releasing a Nintendo Switch 2 that’s similar to the current console with either some innovations or iterations could be a smart move by Nintendo. Instead of having to introduce and do marketing for a new console and design by explaining what it is and what it does, Nintendo could ride the power of the already extremely strong Nintendo Switch brand. Name Recognition: Comfort: Gamers are already used to the Switch, so having a Switch 2 release that’s similar to the original would make them more likely to buy one if it was the next Nintendo console than they would be to buy a new console with a new design. Cons: Portable consoles will most likely always be weaker than stationary console counterparts because portable consoles have to be able to be taken anywhere, which means that they have to be made large enough to use, but small enough to be compact and able to be easily put in a bag or a carrying case. Hardware limitations: These smaller designs mean that there is less room for airflow, which is necessary to cool larger and more powerful pieces of hardware like graphics cards that heat up during use. Smaller hardware means less powerful hardware as an end result, and in an era where not only is 60 frames per second gaming becoming the norm, but also 4K gaming, that could be difficult to achieve in a portable package. Since the Switch has a huge library of games from third-party devs (especially on the eShop), parents need to be more careful. Omocat The Switch has the Most M-Rated Titles in Nintendo History Nintendo was thought of as the family-friendly console, one in which parents still had to be cautious, but never had to worry about themes like suicide being present in a game played on a Nintendo console. Throughout most of the company’s history, M-rated or even T-rated titles were few and far between. I consider myself a hardcore gamer, and even I would struggle to think of any MATURE titles on the Gameboy, Nintendo DS, or Nintendo Wii. However, the release of literally changed the game for the company. With previous consoles, Nintendo pretty much relied on 1st-party exclusive titles to drive sales. the Nintendo Switch There’s a reason why the Fire Emblem, Super Mario, and Pokémon series can only be played on Nintendo consoles. With the Switch, that all changed. Nintendo game exception third-party developer support, allowing for huge triple-A titles like Skyrim, Wolfenstein, Assassins Creed, and more to be released on the platform. THAT’S HOW DARK IT IS Like population, I’ve experienced anxiety at some points in my life (particularly on airplanes), but I’m by no means someone that worries about getting anxious playing video games. The reason Omori hits so hard The constant flip-flopping between childlike innocence to super dark themes and imagery keeps your emotions all over the place at times and can trigger you. which is something I take seriously, be very careful with this game. If you are someone prone to serious bouts of anxiety, depression, or thoughts of suicide, it’s probably best to just stay away from it. For the sake of your mental health, It’s an amazing game, don’t get me wrong. I would go as far to say But as someone who has experienced a panic attack, no game is worth sacrificing your mental health to play. Maybe come back to it when you’re in a better place mentally and put it down if you ever feel uneasy. it’s one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played in my life. But Does it Really Need a Trigger Warning? Notice that the title of this article says that Omori needs a trigger warning. on Switch I didn’t say that it needs one for Steam or for PS4 or for Xbox ONE (although we could argue for that too). The main reason is that those platforms tend to have more mature gamers. Especially on PC, most people will do a bit of research on it or simply read the Steam reviews on the product page and realize this is gonna be a dark game. because of the number of younger gamers on the platform. I’m particularly worried about the game on Switch There are absolutely ZERO inklings, warnings, or images on the eShop page to show how dark this game is going to be. Looking at the front and back art of the game show no evidence of the VERY dark themes and plot points of the game. if they happen to get their hands on this game. Is the Nintendo Switch Worth It? - An Honest Review

History and Synopsis is Nintendo’s first attempt to port over their popular mascot onto a handheld machine, in case, their brand new (at the time of release) , known for its low price and long battery life, and limited colour palette of four (4) different shades of green and yellow. This is the first game in the eponymous trilogy, which spawned two better-known and more fondly-remembered successors: and , the latter of which featured Mario’s rival as the main playable character, who would later go on to have his own series in future games. I got a copy of this game alongside the Game Boy’s launch title, the ever-popular and often-imitated-but-not-quite-rivalled along with a clone reskinned to feature Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Super Mario Land Game Boy Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 Wario Wario Land Tetris Crazy Castle The premise of these games follows a standard formula for the franchise: the eponymous plumber (sometimes accompanied by his brother ) must set out to rescue a damsel in distress (usually , or as she was known in the West at the time, ) from the clutches of (known at the time as outside of Japan). This one changes things up a bit by having Mario go solo and rescue , who would later become Luigi’s romantic interest, from a tyrannical alien simply known as , who has enslaved the kingdom of . Mario Luigi Princess Peach Princess Toadstool Bowser King Koopa Princess Daisy Tatanga Sarasaland The Game When the game boots up, this is what you get: a simple title screen with a single option to start the game. This is a short game and can be completed in approximately three-quarters of an hour, maybe half an hour if you can achieve a perfect run. Due to the Game Boy’s limited monochrome palette and small screen size owing to its handheld nature, the game mechanics which made the original game so popular had to be revised and condensed in order to fit into the console’s small cartridge size of just 31KB (later in the Game Boy’s life, techniques would be employed to overcome the memory size limitation of the games in order to allow larger and more expansive titles to be released on the platform). Super Mario Brothers bank-switching This game is divided into four (4) worlds composed of three (3) levels each, and each world has a unique theme to it, along with both recurring enemies common throughout the game and enemies unique to those worlds. The manual refers to these worlds as and is named as such: “Kingdoms” (modeled after Ancient Egypt) Birabuto Kingdom (based on stereotypical sci-fi imagery and named after a Japanese word meaning “Futile” or “Wasteful”) Muda Kingdom (inspired by Easter Island complete with head-shaped menhir-like monuments) Easton Kingdom (resembles a fusion of Ancient China and Feudal Japan) Chai Kingdom The main differences between on the Game Boy compared to its bigger brother on the NES/Famicom are mostly cosmetic, but there are some mechanical changes made as well in order to better accommodate Nintendo’s flagship handheld console. Super Mario Land The 1-up mushroom (green in all other Mario games) granting the player an extra life is now a heart. The fire flower now fires what the game refers to as instead of conventional fireballs (presumably because fireballs would have been too difficult to distinguish or animate on such an early Game Boy title like this one), which look and act like cannonballs. Superballs The last level of each world now has a unique boss fight instead of recycling the same Koopa/Bowser enemy type for each battle (the final stage has two boss fights back-to-back). The player can now choose from two (2) exits at the end of the first and second stages in all four worlds: an upper exit and a lower exit. Taking the upper exit will grant the player access to a hidden bonus game where they have the chance to win extra lives (up to 3) or a powerup in the form of a fire flower. If the player wins the fire flower while they already have it equipped, then they get nothing. The third and final stage of the second and fourth worlds (Muda and Easton respectively) feature Mario travelling in a vehicle as the map scrolls automatically - these autoscrolling stages were apparently planned to appear in the original game but were cut out due to the technical limitations of the Famicom and the developers’ challenge in implementing them properly. Super Mario Brothers Presentation Being an early Game Boy game, possibly a launch title, the presentation for this game is extremely sparse - all the player gets is a basic title screen with a single choice: to start the game. Completing the game allows the player to replay the game on a harder difficulty, and completing it again unlocks a stage selection option. However, this is ultimately futile, as these achievements are lost when the power is turned off. The game’s aesthetics and mechanics look and feel very rudimentary, even for a Game Boy game, and the lack of extra content is disappointing. Graphics (Detail, Colour) This is a Game Boy game, so the colours are going to be a little bit on the absent side, while the detail in the graphics is quite simplistic, as if the developers were attempting to replicate the NES and Famicom titles onto much more limited hardware. One change I do like from the conventional powerups is that the 1-up is now a heart, as it is easier for the players to guess what it does, although I do not like how the invincibility powerup (a 5-pointed star also known as a ) disappears through the floor if the player fails to grab it in time, while in all other games it simply bounces along until acquired or until it falls into a pitfall. I also like the new Superball design unique to this game, and some of the architecture is quite appealing, too. pentagram Sound (SFX, Music) This game features an original soundtrack (as do its two sequels), and the music that is here is actually quite catchy and memorable, and, truth be told, I prefer it over the more iconic score from its bigger brother. Each composition sounds like it would fit right at home with its associated world and level design, generating a basic sense of atmosphere, while the sound effects are simplified versions of the famous sounds found in the original game (save for the sound effect played when picking up a coin, 100 of which are needed for an extra life, which seems like it was ported straight across without any compression). Super Mario Brothers Controls The controls are smooth and responsive - perhaps a little bit too responsive, as Mario seems to be slightly more sensitive to traction and gravity in this game. Both traits would later be inherited by Luigi in all future games, starting with the Japanese release of (released in the West under the title as part of the collection for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System or Super Famicom in Japan). I like the addition of fully automatic fire during the autoscrolling stages at the climax of each world, as full-auto gunfire assists the player greatly in destroying the numerous obstacles blocking their path and is extremely helpful during the boss fights. Super Mario Brothers 2 Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels Super Mario All-Stars Gameplay The game actually has a consistent and clear incrementation of difficulty, much to its credit - it gets harder as the player progresses through the four worlds, introducing new tricks and traps with each new level and if the player is savvy enough, then they can access hidden areas in some stages. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Mario game without pipes that lead into underground chambers full of money, and the game retains those in spades. The countdown timer in this game is actually slightly faster when compared against its bigger brother, but at least the maps for each level are short enough in that they can be traversed with ample time (most stages can be cleared in 2, maybe 3 minutes maximum). Super Mario Land Review Overall Verdict , while not a classic game for the Game Boy in the same vein as its successors or even titles like or *,* is an interesting historical curiosity because it showed that a Mario game on a handheld console could work, a concept which the two sequels fleshed out with a greater scope in storytelling and integrating new gameplay elements such as nonlinear levels and secret stages accessible only after completing a certain chapter, requiring that the player revisit already previously completed areas in order to obtain a perfect score. Not a bad start for Mario on the Game Boy, and a decent introduction to platforming on the handheld console as well as a good enough “first game” that isn’t Super Mario Land The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Metroid 2: Return of Samus Tetris. Final Score: 3 1/2 out of 5.

I love OLED and would love to OLED my whole life, but I mostly play in docked mode anyway, so I may as well pocket that money and buy a better TV instead. Also, with the Steam Deck coming out soon, I see myself using my Switch far less when I get my hands on that bad boy. I don't think the price difference is justified due to the minimal upgrades. Rumour has it though Nintendo wanted to upgrade the switches resolution and framerate but couldn't due to chip shortages. Not sure it's worth the money, but it could be for first-time buyers. What I wanted for an upgraded Switch were higher framerates and better performance. Games like Pokemon: Legends Arceus need it. I know you are looking forward to that game. Are you concerned about the switch’s power? That's interesting because I usually play in handheld mode. It makes sense if you play handheld; this upgrade might be more for you. Can you tell me a bit about the steam deck? I don't know much about it. It is a hybrid console like the Nintendo Switch but beefed up with the latest AMD chip architecture that is also present in PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.  Valve is reportedly testing every game on Steam to ensure you can play every game on the platform and support other storefronts like Epic Games and EA Play. I'd buy a steam deck over a Switch upgrade. Like we bought the switch for portability, we know that it is less powerful than other systems. The onus should not be on the consumer to upgrade their console if Nintendo didn't optimize well. Evidence is piling up that the semiconductor shortage might have made Nintendo pull the plug on the Pro. I guess only time will tell. Without COVID, we definitely would have had a pro by now. Adrian Morales Oct 29, 2021, 3:49 PM Jack Boreham, the team at Valve, has stated that it will support multiple storefronts, with Xbox and Xbox Game Pass supported. So yes, you can take your Xbox games on the go AND also take all the PlayStation games coming to Steam these next couple of years on the go too! The Steam Deck screen is only 720p and 60 fps which is fine by me. For a portable gaming system, I think that is perfect, and if I want higher fps, I'll sit and play at my PC anyways. If I didn't have a switch, I would prefer the OLED for sure, but it's not near enough of an upgrade to bother trading my base Switch in. Honestly, I want more battery life more than anything. I also agree that the Steam Deck seems like a better option if I want to upgrade. It's what a Switch Pro be. It's more powerful and far more consumer-friendly. I don't want another handheld console, so I'm stuck between giving up on Nintendo exclusives for something better or just sticking with my base Switch until Nintendo figures out a Pro model. I feel like they are the kings of "two steps forward, one awkward steps back." Blake Cram Oct 30, 2021, 10:48 PM Jack Boreham I think it may be the semiconductor shortage, but more than that, I think it's just the ethos of Nintendo to be a toy company. They haven't tried to push the fold of tech since the Super Nintendo, and I don't think they are interested anymore. They're just trying to make something fun to use, which sometimes leads to confusing decisions like the OLED Switch with only a few upgrades. And because it's Nintendo and the Switch already sells like hotcakes, I don't think they're worried about selling this thing. People will buy it regardless.
