I sat down with Joel to chat about Web3 technologies, innovation, and our future as he sees it. Ethereum What's your current role and what do you like about it? I founded the , and am currently running it as CEO. I'm also the lead language designer of the __ __language and metaurl protocol. We believe we have the best secret sauce for uniting all metaverses and becoming the platform of choice for individuals, DAOs, and businesses in building their metaverse. We focus on the experience of the Web3 travelers, and engagement throughout their journey traversing our cosmic system with a narrative to give travelers purpose when initiating their launch sequence. In the past, I was a founding member of Ethereum and the founding architect of . I have over a decade of experience in Ethereum development, governance protocols, cryptoeconomics, and establishing legal standards for utility tokens at Harvard and MIT. MetaMetaverse metalambda MetaMask How and when did you get into programming? I was always a logical thinker. I think of myself more as a thinker, rather than just a programmer. I first started programming games, but later my research interests focused on the confluence of blockchain network topologies and swarm intelligence, especially how the principles within decentralized organizations can be used to fuel global innovation. I also worked on holonic philosophy, the evolution of jurisprudence, data-driven approaches to innovation, and smart city data architecture. What's your earliest memory of learning to code? Very long ago. I think I was about six years old and started with Qbasic, and this cool magazine called 3-2-1 contact that used to have basic programming challenges. Not to show my age, but I think nowadays a lot has changed within the sector. When Elon Musk achieves his dream of getting us to Mars, what technology do you think would be important on Mars and why? Well, once the dream becomes a reality the next step needed would be one of Horticulture, they say Martian soil has some nutrients which plants need to grow and survive. But because of Mars's extremely cold conditions, plants such as Watney's potatoes would need to grow inside a controlled environment. This technology might already be around to sustain this growth. Another important step would be transportation, outside of the obvious necessity of providing appropriate tech and science to have individuals being able to breathe air freely. What's a programming language that you would build EVERYTHING and ANYTHING in and why? I love metalambda because it is the first language oriented about generating your own metaverses, simulations, and virtual reality. MetaLambdas are cross-platform functions that accompany computational lifeforms such as anticipated by Von Neumann in his Universal Constructor Theory. What's something you think Software developers do not do enough of? I believe software developers nowadays need to focus more on QA, effectively making sure they read their own code and making sure it works in that scenario. Planning out the purpose of building that code is another one of major importance, rather than building it because it ‘ended up in your lap.’ Writing test coverage is another thing. For those who do not know what that is, it’s a technique that determines whether our test cases are actually covering the application code, and how much code is exercised when we run those test cases. Build it with integration in mind - this is of the utmost importance nowadays given flexibility and robustness are of the highest necessity. A solid life balance is significant. Honestly, more developers need to cut time away from their computers and enjoy life a bit. Sometimes individuals who are constantly coding become lost in their work, and mistakes become abundant. What is your least favorite thing about programming? This goes back to my previous answer, it’s very easy for programmers to become introverted, with lots of people ending up not understanding you. It ends up being easier for people with bad intentions to take advantage of you. That’s why a solid life balance is important. What’s a technology you’re currently learning or excited to learn? There are too many, time is the issue. Currently, I’m looking at Pickover, who has a list of esoteric languages, and, in general, I like these very obscure programming languages. Time travel 10 years into the past or 10 years into the future? What does technology look like? Give reasons for your answer. In my opinion, I feel as if Telepathy will be the new frontier for the future. Imagine having the element of a smarter, sharper AI connected to your mind, and having the possibility to manipulate 3D space. The implications of this would be incredible. Apple’s New Virtual Reality Headset Apple just unveiled its virtual reality headset which the company said aims to merge the real world with immersive video and audio. However, even with Apple's reputation as a pioneer in the smartphone industry and the company’s ability to leapfrog other tech companies to the forefront of innovation and creativity, there are many doubts about the success of their $3499 device, especially considering the challenges faced by rival tech giants like Meta and Microsoft in bringing virtual reality into the mainstream. But who is going to pay that amount of money to wear something on their face? The answer is: not many people it seems. Paul Tassi, writing for Forbes, the product, arguing its mostly useless functionality will not take well with consumers. lambasted “Guess how many people I know who watch full movies in VR with a thing on their face? Zero. This is not a thing people do regularly. That will not change when it’s AR instead of VR,” he writes. According to what appears to be a growing number of critics, Apple's headset is both an experimental and costly venture; although the company could afford it. With tens of billions in profits last year, Apple can afford to spend the approximately $1 Billion on R&D for the Vision Pro. While the same could be said for other successful devices like the iPhone, those technologies were introducing new possibilities, whereas Apple is venturing into well-explored territory where others have struggled. What these warnings mean is that Apple is likely to fail in this endeavor to get people to love wearing a bulky and inconvenient headset. The Vision Pro headset, showcased at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, is designed to offer blended reality experiences for popular apps from Apple, Microsoft, and other companies, blending virtual and physical spaces for work and entertainment. The headset features a "see-through" experience, allowing wearers to interact with the physical world while engaging with virtual content. It even generates a digital representation of the wearer's appearance for use in FaceTime conversations and other immersive experiences. Expected to hit the market in early 2024, Apple's upcoming headset is connected to a pocket battery via a woven cable, providing approximately only 2 hours of usage time (!) This aspect of the product is a huge disappointment, and most users will be put off by the need to carry a battery pack in their pocket with a wire extending out from the headset. Apple claims that the device operates silently and maintains a comfortable temperature during extended use, but this claim will have to be put to the test by whichever wealthy consumers actually bother to purchase it. Powered by the R1 chip, a new Apple computer chip, the headset processes data from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, aiming to minimize sensor lag. Control of the headset can be achieved solely through the wearer's visual gaze, voice commands, and small hand gestures like pinching and flicking motions - another area of VR that has yet to be perfected, and we will have to see if Apple’s Vision Pro lives up to the hype and the expectations. The Challenges to Come For years, Silicon Valley has been striving to bring various forms of extended reality (XR), which encompasses virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, into the mainstream. One of the primary challenges faced by XR headsets is their high cost, along with the discomfort and unwieldiness of wearing bulky devices. However, an issue that has often been overlooked is virtual reality sickness, which is akin to motion sickness. Meta’s metaverse platform has struggled with its own technology and headsets. Prior to Apple's headset announcement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the upcoming Quest 3 VR headset, also offering a mixed reality experience, but it too is unlikely to have the desired effect on consumers. No one wants to shell out big money for an experimental device that is not going to deliver on experience and ease of use. Even during the Coronavirus pandemic when many people stayed home, virtual reality and other XR headsets did not experience significant adoption. Global shipments of VR and AR headsets actually decreased between 2021 and 2022. Experts say the user base for VR remains relatively small and primarily focused on video games and entertainment - not on daily tasks such as work and phone calls. Considering this dismal landscape, Apple has at least taken the smart step on the side of caution and set modest sales expectations for its headset, projecting less than 100,000 units sold and a total production of potentially 300,000 headsets, as reported by TrendForce. It is unlikely the device will take off as a popular consumer product. Sure, the wealthy will buy it for their kids on Christmas, and perhaps other industries will use it as an experimental device, but for the most part, that is exactly what this is: an experimental device. The technology behind VR and XR is almost there but not quite. It will take a few more years to perfect it. If anything, Apple’s Vision Pro is a terrific leap forward and adds a new layer to the possibilities that lie before us in this realm of virtual and extra reality. But we aren’t there yet. For now, the Vision Pro is nothing more than an experimental toy for the wealthy.

Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do. Hi! My name is Joel Dietz, and I'm the founder & CEO of MetaMetaverse, a diverse platform that allows users to build their metaverses and participate in virtual events, games, and much more. I was also a founding member of Ethereum and the founding architect of MetaMask. I've been in the space for over a decade. Through my studies at Harvard and MIT, I have amassed a wealth of knowledge in the areas of Ethereum development, governance protocols, crypto-economics, and the establishment of legal standards for utility tokens. What brought you to the metaverse space? There are several things that had my interest. First of all, the Web3 aspect, tokens, governance, etc., that we have come to know from crypto. Another one is AR and VR, creating new gaming experiences and more. Finally, psychedelic research and neurology, through which we connect with and learn about the brain and its processes. The convergence of interests and how they could intertwine to create new possibilities is what led me to the metaverse. Can you discuss the role of blockchain technology in creating and governing metaverses? Of course, blockchain technology is essential to the success of metaverses. It offers several key advantages essential for creating secure, transparent, and trustworthy virtual environments. First and foremost, blockchain provides a decentralized ownership model. This is crucial in metaverses, where virtual assets and experiences can be valuable. With blockchain, we can ensure that ownership is verifiable and transferable securely and transparently. This is further enhanced by providing the same security in its transactions with blockchain-based payment systems. This will be critical for the growth and success of the metaverse, as it enables users to transact confidently and reduces the risk of fraud and other financial crimes. Blockchain can help us manage identities in a secure and unique manner. This is essential for protecting user privacy and preventing impersonation in metaverses. Furthermore, blockchain technology's decentralized and cryptographic nature also helps ensure data security and integrity in metaverses, protecting against hacking and other forms of cybercrime. How do you envision virtual society, currency, and economies functioning in the metaverse? Developers will build virtual societies on a foundation of trust, transparency, and equality. Users will have a secure digital identity verified by blockchain, providing a safe and private environment to interact with others. I see blockchain-based virtual currencies as the backbone of the economy within these societies. Virtual currencies will be used to buy and sell virtual goods and services and to exchange value between users. Moreover, these currencies will be decentralized and transparent, enabling secure and equitable transactions. To support these virtual economies, I envision a range of marketplaces and exchanges that allow users to buy, sell and trade goods and services, invest in virtual assets, and exchange value between virtual currencies. Furthermore, decentralized and transparent mechanisms will govern these marketplaces and exchanges. These aspects of the metaverse have the potential to be more equitable, secure, and transparent than their real-world counterparts, and I am excited to be a part of shaping this future. What kind of infrastructure is necessary for building and maintaining a metaverse? Building and maintaining a metaverse requires a robust infrastructure supporting the high demand for computing, storage, and network resources. Key components include high-performance computing, large-scale storage, fast networking, scalable infrastructure, decentralized architecture, open standards, and interoperability with other virtual and augmented reality systems. Our metaverse project is designed with these considerations in mind to provide users with a seamless and immersive virtual experience. How do you see the metaverse impacting and potentially replacing physical societies in the future? The metaverse is complementing physical society, not replacing it. The metaverse offers unique opportunities for individuals to express themselves and connect with others in new and innovative ways. Still, it can never replace the richness and complexity of human interaction in the physical world. However, the metaverse will certainly have a significant impact on the way we interact, work, play, and socialize. It will offer new opportunities for people to engage with one another in virtual environments and can revolutionize how we think about and interact with technology. In the future, I envision the metaverse as a vital component of our connected world, providing a new and exciting dimension of human experience and connection. How do you plan to address privacy and security issues within the metaverse? We are working to implement robust security protocols on the platform, give users control over their personal data, comply with privacy laws, educate users on privacy, and collaborate with industry leaders to ensure a secure virtual experience. This comes partially with why the team joined the OMA3 alliance as well, to learn from great peers within the space and keep ourselves updated on privacy and security updates within the ecosystem. How do you envision the metaverse impacting gaming, education, and real estate? The metaverse has the potential to disrupt and transform many industries, providing new and exciting opportunities for innovation and growth. For gaming, the metaverse will provide an immersive and interactive gaming experience like never before, allowing players to get fully immersed themselves in virtual worlds and engage with others in new and innovative ways, further enhanced by the integration of VR technology. This concerns companies and brands engaging with audiences in similar fashions - where gaming meets brand recognition and immersion. In terms of education, the metaverse has the potential to change the way we learn and educate, providing students with new environments where they can experience new and innovative educational content freshly and engagingly. Simulating future endeavors and careers for students while providing them with the possibility of a hybrid schooling approach - individuals being taught at home for any reason can finally join in a more immersive and comfortable learning environment. Real estate will be able to use these virtual environments to provide new opportunities for people to showcase architecture, views, landscapes, and more. Through VR, for example, people can view properties remotely as if they were there in person. This can change how we think about and use real estate, providing new and exciting opportunities for developers and consumers. Our team is discussing a few of these ideas with decently sized real estate and architecture firms. These can enhance these industries, and I'm very excited to see how these sectors will benefit from their integration in the future. What ethical considerations should the industry address in creating and developing the metaverse? Potential ethical considerations must be considered in the creation and development of the metaverse, especially with its nature of rapid and unprecedented advancements. Ensuring the safety of users within the virtual world, protecting their privacy and security, promoting diversity and inclusivity, and considering the economic impact of the metaverse on communities and individuals are just a few of the key ethical considerations that the industry must address. Considering these considerations, we can ensure that the metaverse is developed and used responsibly, respecting all users' rights and dignity. Can you discuss any current or future projects you are working on related to building and expanding the metaverse? Well, as mentioned above, I'm heavily involved in the OMA3 alliance along with brands like Sandbox, Upland, Animoca, Alien Worlds, and more, to name a few - focused on ensuring virtual land, digital assets, ideas, and services are highly interoperable between platforms and transparent to all communities. Along with this, in direct relation to the MetaMetaverse, I'm constantly building on MetaLambda algorithms, which are cross-platform functions accompanied by computational lifeforms, these being seen in Von Neumann's Universal Constructor Theory. In addition, in collaboration with the Wolfram Institute, we are researching the Ruliad and using this knowledge in our assessment of the Zuse Hypothesis.

So What Does the Word Metaverse Mean? In original Greek: Meta → Beyond or after Verse → a universe or space So "Metaverse", in the true literal sense, would mean: " In this case, we can call a space beyond our reality, the Metaverse. A space situated beyond the (normal) reality". The Metaverse is a version of the internet that is always: Real-time → User is present in the moment(Live). 3D → Users can interact with the content. Immersive → User can experience the content in-depth. Activity oriented → User can move, feel and explore inside the immersive environment. The Multiverse of Metaverse. Metaverse is only one (like there is only one internet), but there are going to be many virtual worlds inside this Metaverse (like there are different websites on the internet). These virtual worlds can be created and customized according to the user’s wish. There can be a virtual world like Hogwarts or a virtual spacecraft that is traveling across galaxies. You can experience anything you want in an immersive 3D virtual world; these are the places where our fantasies come true. In a nutshell, the Metaverse is a space situated beyond our reality that you access using the VR/AR/MR headsets, where the user is present in the moment in the form of an avatar, and this avatar can interact, visualize and experience the content (3D assets) in depth, overall an immersive 3D presentation of the internet. How Do We Access the Metaverse? Let’s understand VR, AR, and MR and how they all are related to XR(Extended Reality). VR (Virtual Reality) headset: To access these virtual worlds, you’ll need a VR (Virtual Reality) headset, like the Meta quest. The VR name itself indicates that it is a gadget that helps you get immersed in virtual worlds like The SandBox, Horizon World, Rec Room, etc. AR (Augmented Reality) headset: AR (Augmented Reality) is a technology that helps us overlap digital objects over the real world rather than completely immersing us in a virtual world. Instagram/Snapchat filters and Pokémon Go are perfect examples of AR. You can consider AR as the partial implementation of the Metaverse. All this time, Metaverse has been here in the form of Augmented Reality, and we weren't even aware of it. MR (Mixed Reality) Is a Space Between VR and AR: VR allows you to interact and control the 3D assets whereas AR allows you to experience them in the real world. The MR headsets come into the picture when you want to interact, experience, as well as control virtual objects in the real world. MR brings a balance between the real and virtual worlds, and it consists of the most exciting real-world use cases. Be it texting your friend on Instagram or watching a video on YouTube, the process remains the same. In all cases, you are transacting information, either you’re creating it or consuming it. Except for gaming none of the above-given activities are highly immersive. The 3D Internet The Metaverse is about activities. It improves the internet rather than competing with it. With the help of technologies like virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR), users can navigate or experience a virtual world that mirrors parts of the actual world. This means that the user is present in the moment of interaction, almost as if they are in the scene themselves. It's like playing a game in first-person perspective (FPP) mode instead of third-person perspective (TPP). When you’re inside a Metaverse, you’re completely immersed in a 3D world, that expects you to perform activities to navigate/move. In the meantime, you’re experiencing the content in 3D, interacting with it rather than just looking at it (like you do with your smartphones and computers). In a nutshell, the current internet is something that people "browse." But, to a degree, people can "live" in the metaverse. Who Is Building the Metaverse? The Metaverse is being built on 3 different layers by companies and startups: Infrastructure layer Platform layer Application layer This layer is the building block of the Metaverse. As the name implies, this layer focuses on building the infrastructure for the Metaverse and it mainly consists of - Infrastructure layer → → To access the Metaverse, you need headsets. These headsets are being built by various companies like Meta’s Quest, Sony’s PSVR, and SnapChat’s AR spectacles. VR/AR/MR headsets → The Metaverse is completely 3D which means, it requires a lot of graphic power. This is where companies like Nvidia and AMD come into the frame. They are developing graphic cards like GeForce and Radeon to help your computer build/render 3D assets smoothly. GPU (Graphic processing unit) → In the Metaverse, the user is always present at the moment which means there is seamless connectivity between the user’s headset and the virtual world’s server. To ensure that connectivity never gets interrupted, there’s a need for a faster internet network like 5G. 5G → Since Metaverse is always live and 3D, it produces a lot of data that is stored at a place from where it can be downloaded and uploaded at any given time. This is where cloud providers like AWS (Amazon web services) and Microsoft Azure come into the picture. Cloud Storage → What does the word platform mean? The place where you get on or off trains at a railway station (using a pre-defined resource to create/access a new resource). In the same way, the platform layer of the Metaverse means building a system that would allow others to build on top of it. Platform layer Similar to how IDEs (integrated development) environment assists us in building applications for the current internet, there are going to be specific platforms that will help you to build the Metaverse applications. The Unity and UnReal gaming engines are two of the most popular platforms to build 3D assets. Virtual worlds like The Sandbox, Horizon World and Decentraland are also a type of platform which allows you to create content on top of it. The sole motive of the platform layer is to provide an interface for others to build. → Once you’ve access to all these virtual worlds and IDEs, how are you going to utilize them for real-world use cases? The application layer focuses on building solutions on top of the platform layer. Application layer Take, for instance, a scenario where a manager wants to conduct an online meeting with his employees. The manager can customize the virtual world using code/no-code tools to make it suitable for carrying out the meeting. Or if an artist wants to organize a concert in the Metaverse, the artist can customize the virtual world according to his needs. The Sole motive of the application layer is to build real-world use cases of the Metaverse. It is the application layer where all the consumers of the Metaverse are found. Why Do We Need the Metaverse? One of the most important questions is: do we need the Metaverse? We are happy with our smartphones and laptops/computer performing all the day-to-day tasks. In recent years, especially post-2010, we saw a sudden boost in the growth of internet users. The main factors driving this growth were the attractive , smooth and . If UI and UX, in the form of 2D, can drive such insane growth, imagine what kind of growth 3D UI/UX would lead to. 3D UI/UX can enhance user engagement in playing games, browsing social media, e-commerce, or attending a meeting by allowing them to be present in the moment rather than just scrolling or staring at a 2D screen. User engagement and experience are key to driving the growth of any product/service. Big brands understand this better than anybody else. Most metaverses will fail. I’m fairly certain about it. And yet, I’m still very bullish on the idea of the metaverse overall and I firmly believe that it will be the biggest socio-economic shift since the rise of social media (or web2 if you prefer)... but we will get to that later. For now, let’s look at the reasons why I think that most of these projects will likely fail. First of all, what is a metaverse? Even though it’s been a bit of a buzzword in 2021 and early 2022, the vast majority of people have no idea what it actually means. This is hardly surprising considering that even Mark Zuckerberg’s descriptions of Meta’s metaverse have been so far very vague… and he’s spending billions to build this thing! Ok, we are still in the very early days of web3/metaverse and I’m sure that it will keep evolving over time but if the end goal is so vague, I think most will fail to reach it. It's also difficult to make people excited about any vague idea - why should anyone care about it if no one seems to know what 'it' actually is? This leads to the second issue - the level of expectations. If you ask someone about their vision of the metaverse (assuming they have one), they will usually describe something similar to the Oasis from ‘Ready Player One’... which is totally cool, but let’s be honest - we still need another 10 or 15 years for the technology to reach that level. If for most people metaverse = Oasis-like experience, then unsurprisingly, they will likely be disappointed with anything the current tech can offer. And here lies the third issue - many current attempts at creating a metaverse are focused on the visuals ( , , or ) without giving much of an explanation WHY should anyone care about those worlds or what will you be able to do in them? HOW will they supplement or expand what we can currently do in the real world, on social media, or in video games? The focus seems to be on the visuals and digital asset ownership - NFTs representing land, apartments, vehicles, or clothing, tokens powering the platform, etc. But there's a clear lack of 'why'. And without it, it will be hard for any platform to reach mass adoption. Wilder World Bloktopia Helix When I chat with my web2 friends and colleagues, most of them are not keen on the idea of spending hours in front of a computer (or with a VR headset) to explore a virtual world. And yet, they’re already doing it without even realising it - they spend hours on social media to either kill time or to promote themselves, their businesses, etc. They spend hours playing online games. And they communicate with their friends and colleagues using WhatsApp, Zoom, or Teams. For better or worse, we are already living in a primitive version of the metaverse without even knowing it. That’s why I’m bullish on the concept of the metaverse - web2 primed the world for it, and now we need to take the next step. I think that there are two key elements that will decide which metaverse projects will survive - compatibility/interconnectivity and meaningful social or economical experiences. I much prefer the ‘connect your wallet’ option rather than remembering countless logins but I also want to be able to use the same avatar and assets across different platforms. I believe that we will have multiple metaverses but they have to be all interlinked, otherwise, we will just have another generation of social media platforms and online games. But most importantly, these new worlds or platforms have to give us a reason to spend time there. Time is the most valuable asset we have - you cannot buy it or get more of it. Yet, many of us will happily spend hours just mindlessly scrolling social media feeds. Others use these platforms more purposefully - to generate income, build connections, or raise awareness. Any metaverse which will offer social or economical reasons on the scale of Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter is bound to succeed. It’s great to see that some platforms, like or , went in this direction - focusing on experiences and utility, rather than looks. I’m also excited to see what will bring to the table - their first tech demo was pretty awesome and they certainly have the budget and connections to build something great. Since the days of ancient civilisations, humans felt the need to create virtual worlds as an extension of our reality. In the past, these worlds existed mainly in the realm of religion, the afterlife, and mysticism. In recent years, it shifted more toward the digital sphere. To me, the metaverse is the natural next step to fulfil this need of creating virtual worlds. If most metaverses will fail, it certainly won’t be because there’s no need for them… it’s rather because their creators are not focusing on what we’re actually searching for in those virtual worlds.
