How I Landed 4 Jobs and Earned $25K+ With Technical Writing

Yaroslav Zubko has crafted a remarkable international career, creating designs for Boeing, Markit, Deloitte, and Tinder. His exceptional work has earned him prestigious accolades, including the DotComm Award and the Clio Awards, one of the oldest creative awards in the US. The latter was received for one of Tinder's most famous projects, Swipe Night. How did he achieve such impressive feats in the competitive world of design? From Law to Designs Zubko’s journey began in the heart of Ukraine, a burgeoning hub for IT and design. Initially, he studied business law at a local college but decided to follow his passion and started studying graphic design online. In 2012, he landed his first job as a web designer at a Ukrainian fitness retail company, Terrasport. That work, along with some other early projects, laid the foundation for his work philosophy, characterized by a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality. In 2017, he assumed the role of product design director at UpTop, a New York-based property management startup. There, he was in charge of choosing which product features to research and test and deciding how they would be implemented. “There were nights when I couldn't fall asleep because I was thinking about ideas for the product,” Zubko recalls. Concurrently, he dedicated his time to “Interaction Library,” an ambitious project he had been nurturing since 2016. The initiative aimed to curate a comprehensive collection of interaction samples and interface behaviors, serving as a valuable resource for designers and stakeholders. American Odyssey The library's publication on platforms like Dribbble not only earned Zubko industry recognition but also captured the attention of business leaders. Among them was Tinder's Jonathan Badeen, who extended an offer to the designer, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Zubko’s professional life as the lead product designer at the dating giant in 2018. Zubko was entrusted with reshaping Tinder's user experience, with a focus on monetization and engagement. “I animated and presented over 20 versions of Tinder's app, and used A/B testing methods to understand what ideas were worth implementing,” he recalls. One of the standout achievements during his tenure was the restyling of subscription packages in alignment with Apple Store guidelines. This initiative not only enhanced the user experience but also paved the way for sustainable revenue growth. Zubko’s ability to balance user-centric design and revenue optimization was a testament to his holistic approach to product design. He often noted that his goal was to align Tinder's business objectives with user needs, creating a win-win scenario for the company and its users. His original design solutions helped reinvigorate Tinder's premium offerings, catapulting the app's revenue to new heights. Learning Solutions Transitioning from the realm of dating apps to educational technology and leveraging his previous experience, Zubko launched Fluently in 2019—a mobile application dedicated to immersive language exchange. In 2020, he was commissioned by Riiid Labs, which builds AI-based personalized learning solutions. It is one of the major players in the EdTech field, backed by $250 million in investment funding. At the company, Zubko took on the role of director of product design, contributing to Riiid's mission of revolutionizing personalized learning through AI and gamification. Drawing from his insights into UX/UI design, user engagement, and gamification strategies, Zubko led several notable projects. For instance, he worked on an application that helped American students to prepare for the SAT, a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. He also developed the mobile app DE Saber for Colombian students preparing for the Saber 11, a high school exit examination for college admission. Further, Zubko was invited to join Shiftsmart, a company that developed a platform assisting with team onboarding and training, performance management, scheduling and shift dispatch, and more. Shiftsmart raised a total of $117 million in funding, attracting prominent investment firms such as D1 Capital, Spieker Partners, Oakridge Management Group, and S12F, among others. Zubko served as a Senior Designer at the company and worked on the creation of the mobile app and branding. Towards Rewards Zubko’s original designs have earned prestigious international awards and industry acclaim. For instance, he was recognized as Designer of the Year 2019 by the Ukrainian IT Awards. He also won an international competition, the dotCOMM Awards, and the Italian A' Design Award for one of his freelance projects, FameLab. FameLab is a leading social marketing cloud that delivers authentic engagement on Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook Pages. Zubko created interactive designs for the company’s app. He also contributed ideas and concepts to the Swipe Night initiative created for Tinder by the advertising agency 72andSunny in 2019. This was an interactive mini-series about friends trying to save themselves from the apocalypse. Users could participate in the series by swiping, thereby making decisions for the main characters. Based on users' choices, Tinder would then offer potential matches. In 2020, this project won a Clios, one of the oldest awards in the US, recognizing innovation and creative excellence in advertising, design, and communication. From reading HackerNoon articles to working for the company, I've come a long way. Hi! I’m Devansh, a self-taught designer & a 2022 CS graduate. And just like most of us amidst the hiring freeze and lay-offs, I too was looking for a job. I even “almost” landed one (A full-time design role at a Fintech, based in the US) but the HR left me stranded as they went into a hiring freeze, and my salary negotiation interview got scheduled but never happened. So, I was back to square one. A Ray of Hope 🤞 After scrolling for hours on LinkedIn in search of the role that suited me perfectly, I came across this: The moment I saw this, I knew I had to take a shot. I’ve been reading HackerNoon articles ever since one of my seniors introduced me to it back in 2019. So, without wasting any time I updated my resume and got my portfolio ready. The application procedure was quite simple and I could apply with ease. You just need to fill out your details, answer a few questions, add some links to your socials/portfolio, and your resume ofc. Ps: I won’t go into further details about the complete application form since we all like to discover things on our own & I don’t wanna be the one who ruins your adventure. The Interview Process 📃 The whole recruitment process was pretty straightforward with 3 Main Rounds, namely - The Application Round, a Test, and The Interview. I applied on September 10, 2022 Application Round: On September 24, 2022, I received the very first update (From none other than Hang) along with an anticipated timeline mentioning that I was still being considered. First Update: Depending on the team(s) you selected during the application, you receive your test(s). (You receive multiple tests if you apply to more than 1 team). On September 27, 2022, I received invites to the test round from both Social Media and Graphic Design Teams. Test Round(s): As per my interest, I ended up submitting the test for the latter. It took me a good whole week to finish up and meet the deadline (4th October) Test Submission: On October 18, 2022, the good news finally came in. I was invited for an interview with Kien Dao (Design Lead) at HackerNoon. I ended up selecting October 27, 2022, as Diwali was just around the corner. Interview Round: I had an amazing time with Kien during the interview and it became more of a 1-1 discussion about all things design rather than a typical boring interview. Interview: Finally the wait was over and the mail was here. Result: The Task that took me through to The Interview 🚀 After getting shortlisted, comes the task. These were the tasks that earned me a spot for the interview. The test from the Design Team comprised two tasks: Logo Design Task Motion Graphic Design Task Logo Design Task 🎨 The logo design task proved to be a perfect match for me. It challenged my brain to unleash its creativity to the fullest and bring some crazy ideas to life. Here’s the design brief that was sent over: So initially, I approached the problem statement keeping a few things in my mind: Gotta keep it simple Remember, ”Less is More” Don’t forget to add a pinch of Pixelated/Retro Vibe Process My process for this logo design sprint began with the 10/10 method where I produce 10 random ideas that come to my mind and then, later on, add further details to the design. 10/10 Method The 10/10 Method (as I call it) is all about sketching down 10 raw ideas in 10 minutes. (All based on your initial interpretation of the problem statement) & then figuring out the details for the same. Here are the 10 that I came up with initially: Adding details Come to think of it, Designers at HackerNoon did an excellent job designing the first SOTY ‘22 logo. The rocket is a very recognizable symbol. In order to come up with something as iconic as the one they used earlier, I opted for the “Innovation Bulb/Lamp” or we can say the “Idea Symbol”. It was based on my belief that a startup can only bloom if it has a solid foundation and a solid foundation is an idea that can make this world a better place - even if just a little. Ps: The humanoid bust represents the human factor of any startup/org & in order to incorporate the touch of Retro I went for a pixelated bulb. (Created in illustrator). Also, the filament here represents one’s journey through ups and downs to reach their goal. Colors In order to keep it simple and minimalistic I went for a combo of White (#FFFFFF) and Pigment Green (#1AA54A). The green here represents growth and sustainability - the ideals a startup should be built upon. Out of all other greens, Pigment Green hits the spot for me with a balance of 10% red, 62% green, and 28% blue. The white perfectly harmonizes with the green to create a calm tone. Final Submission After a fun week-long design sprint I finally ended up with my final designs for Startups of The Year 2022. Motion Graphic Design Task 🎥 The motion design task was next in line. It was fun and turned out to be a whole new learning experience in itself. Here’s the brief that was sent over. Just like before, I went in with the same approach of keeping it minimal. The process began with drawing out some frames that I had in mind and creating the basic flow (kinda like a storyboard). The final flow for the intro that I came up with was: The video opens with a pull-down light bulb that opens up the Logo animation Followed by the link Then came “Presented by Hackernoon” And at last, the sponsors. Final Submission During a whole week of balancing both tasks, I ended up messing up the deadline and had to improvise without the BG MUSIC 💀 (A major mistake when it comes to motion design. Music always comes first since it sets up the pace for the animation) Well that aside, here was my final submission (mp4→gif) for the motion graphics design task. The Happy Ever After ✨ Before I knew it, I was in an interview with . The interview went really well and we ended up discussing design trends. It became a friendly 1-1 meet rather than a typical interview. Kien And just like that the wait was over and was here: the mail Like the mail, the contract followed thereafter and in no time I officially onboarded HackerNoon as a Graphic Design Intern.

Just buying an iPhone (I have never been a fan of any brand, it is not related to the iPhone itself) helped me to get my first job in an interesting way back in the 2016 summer. It was a Young Talent program of one of the biggest Telecommunication Companies in Turkey and I was in 4th step of a 5-stage recruitment process: Video Assessment English Assessment Talent Assessment Group Interview Meeting with Executive & Offer If I pass the Group Interview stage, I will get an offer. The group Interview was interesting; a case study is given to 8-10 people around a table. Everyone read the case carefully and suggested a solution for the given questions. Group Interview It was the interview day. I prepared by watching example cases on Youtube. There were 4-5 employees (I later realized that most of them were managers) and 8-10 candidates in the room. We were given a 2-page case, on the first page there were some graphs and on the second page, there was a description and a question at the end. I can't remember the graphs exactly, but one of them was something like the below: There was also some demographic distribution of users and other market-related information. : What are your ideas to increase our Online Store sales? Question : Explain your ideas and convince others about it. Also at the same time, inquire about others' ideas, ask them why they suggested them, etc. Your idea should be the best one while respecting others. Mission : Company was selling internet plans (GB deals etc.), headphones, accessories, tablets, and cell phones. Note Success Thinking time was up and now it was discussion time. One of the candidates started to explain his idea then I and others began to discuss: We should make discounts on physical products with sim card deals We should have cheaper internet deals than messaging deals ... I did not write down too many ideas but one of them was interesting. The year before I graduated, my father and his friends invited me to join their trip to the USA. It was in September and Apple had just announced iPhone 6S. When we went to Store in Washington I joined the long queue first time in my life. At that time, I researched the reasons for this long queue and learned that because of Apple's announcement policy, people were already prepared for the new phone’s launch. If you look in detail at the release cycles in the above picture, most of the releases are in September and October. Apple Back to the interview, I was thinking of the peak point in a specific picture. And suddenly I had an idea; Is it possible people are checking if there is a new deal for the new iPhones? When it was my turn to share my idea I mentioned: Apple releases iPhones every year around September (which I remember because of my trip and research after). It seems like people are looking for new iPhone deals on the store mostly around that month. We should highlight the iPhone deals around this month and have special offers if possible. So far no employee had made any comment on our discussion. But when I mentioned this idea, 2 of the employees (managers) mention that they were impressed, not directly to me; just reflexively. Even after the interview was done some of the candidates came to me and said "you will be selected". In the end, I got a job offer and started my first job as a Backend Developer. Conclusion Never limit yourself to given data. Think about correlations and similarities of a problem you’re solving, with isssues in your life Try to take lessons from all events. It doesn't have to relate to programming, engineering, etc. Also published here.

Buying an iPhone Landed me my First Job as a Developer

With internship season in full swing I’ve reflected on last years internship memories and lessons. Interning at was a very valuable experience, and I’ve written this post to shed light on my journey and experience, in hopes that is useful for incoming interns or anyone that is interested in joining Facebook. Facebook Background Last year (July — October 2017) I completed a Software Engineering internship at Facebook, Tel Aviv. I worked on the team, which is part of . Internet.org aims to solve the social, economic and technical barriers to connect the 4 billion people without access to the internet. Express Wi-Fi Internet.org Facebook Interview Process I applied to Facebook through Facebook! I submitted my resume via the careers section. At the time, I was an undergrad student in Israel at the Technion, and had a nice , and 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃 collection of hacks, projects failed start up attempts One thing that stood out about the Facebook application process, in comparison to other large tech companies, is that you are not required to submit a grade sheet. Facebook loves recruiting engineers who are builders, and I think this approach stems from the belief that a high GPA is not necessariliy an indication of strong engineering skills (although it can help!). This gives the hackers and builders a chance to shine and show off all the cool stuff they’ve built. After submitting my resume, I had a phone call scheduled with a London-based recruiter. It was a short non-technical conversation where she told me about the company and asked me a few questions about my interests and experiences. After this we scheduled an interview that took place at my university’s campus. I won’t dive too deep about the actual interview process because there is a ton of accurate regarding this. The interview questions and required preparation is pretty similar to prepping for a Microsoft / / <BIG_TECH_COMPANY> interview. Know your data structures and algorithms well. Cracking the Coding Interview is a highly recommended book throughout the industry, although I didn’t have time to sift through all 700+ pages. I used online interview sites like HackerRank and LeetCode. information available online Google One thing that I learned in retrospect is that interviewers really want to see you do well. My experience is that they’re not going to approach you with nefarious, evil dynamic programming questions just for kicks (although we’ve all heard horror stories 😱 😰😱 😰😱 😰😱). Interviewers take time out of their schedule to interview candidates, and the goal is to find people who are the very best at what they do. So, try to be as relaxed as possible, and focus on the task at hand! A couple of interviews later I had received an offer 😎😎😎 I was really excited to find out what happened next! About 3 months prior to team selection, Facebook sent out an email where we were asked about our technological interests, fields we’d be interested in exploring and fields we did NOT want to work in. Take time in thinking about this and research the projects available at the site you’re going to join. They take these preferences into consideration and try to find you the best match possible given the available teams projects and needs. 4 weeks later, I got a phone call from the intern director who let me know I was set to start at Express Wi-Fi! Facebook uses a strength-based approach. It’s really important that everyone gets to work on what they are passionate about, as they believe it is a crucial component for high quality work and success. Preparing for the internship Being as excited as I was to start, I wanted to prepare for the internship by learning about relevant technologies. This ends up being a bit tricky as you don’t know what project and tech stack you’re going to work on until a few days into the internship. One thing that I recommend learning if you’re not already familiar with (whether or not you’re coming to Facebook!) is version control! You’ll be using this on every team at Facebook and hopefully any other company you end up at. Facebook . You could learn it or learn git. The concepts are similar and knowing the basics of version control makes it easier to submit / iterate on your work. It is important to mention that as an intern Facebook isn’t expecting prior domain specific knowledge. Projects are selected carefully for this reason, and interns are expected to learn and ramp up on the relevant tech stacks. This can sound daunting, but Facebook provides a lot of internal wikis, videos, and general help for learning internal technologies. For the open source technologies (Android, iOS, React, php etc.) Google and Stack Overflow are your friends 😄😄😄😄😄. My projects consisted primarily of writing and interacting with Facebook specific backend frameworks. There was no real way to familiarize myself with the tech prior to beginning of my internship, but it was completely fine. I was given the time to learn and ramp up and had an excellent intern manager who helped me along the way. uses Mercurial hack So how does this whole internship thing work? In general, a Facebook internship is a 12 week process. Each intern is assigned to a team where they are assigned a specific intern project. Your main goal during your internship is to complete the project successfully and ship it to production. For the first week of the internship all the Tel Aviv interns were flown out to the London offices for an orientation week. This was a lot of fun, as you will have time to explore the city, get to know other interns, and explore the amazing London offices. After a week we returned to the Tel Aviv offices to begin our internships. I started working steadily on my project and began to feel familiar with the codebase, while getting to know my team. My team and intern manager were super welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Hanging out with my team was fun, and ultimately the people at Facebook are one of the strongest reasons to join! During my internship process, I was given a lot of ownership on my project and freedom in code architecture and implementation. It’s not all work though! There are frequent office events such as hackathons, , and more. BFF outings Me (left) and Avner (right), at one of the company hackathons During this period, I learned a lot about software architecture and workflow at a scale as well as approaches and constraints regarding developing software for developing countries. (hint: not all mobile browsers run Javascript!). At the end of each week you have a 1-on-1 with your intern manager. Use this as an opportunity to get feedback on how you’re doing and where you can improve. In addition, use every meeting as a chance to give your manager an in-depth update about where you are in your project, what’s going well, and what is challenging. Around 6 weeks into the internship there is a mid-point review where interns are evaluated. You get detailed feedback about how you’re doing and whether your “trending towards an offer or not.” If you’re trending towards an offer don’t take your foot off the pedal! If you aren’t, there is still time to improve and get an offer. Either way, your status, strengths and weaknesses shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point as you have weekly 1-on-1’s where you should be getting a steady stream of valuable feedback. Here are my 2 cents on what helped me make my internship successful, and ultimately receive a full-time offer. Be independent and learn how to unblock yourself You’re going to be working on one of the largest codebases in the world. At Facebook’s scale and engineering speed, you’re going to have a lot of “ ” moments. Learn how to use the resources available to you. Facebooks code base is a huge monorepo, so you can always search to see how different pieces of technology were implemented or used throughout the company. In addition, there are Workplace groups (Facebook for work) with helpful discussions and company wikis and videos. If you can’t find the information you need to move forward, ping a team member. In general, I like to consult with team members after I’ve tried a few things myself as this makes the “debug” process easier and more efficient. what is going on?! Move fast Submit code early and submit code often. Submitting / sharing your work early is going to give you more time to iterate on it. Pushing code regularly helped me avoid ‘code paralysis’ where I would feel too overwhelmed and unsure about how to start a certain task. Be organized in your approach Your internship project is likely going to be composed of smaller stepping stones and functional blocks. Spend time breaking down how you’re going to approach each challenge and work diligently. I liked working with a pen and notebook to scope out my tasks and cross them out when completed. Find whatever system works for you, and keeps you focused and on point. my handy dandy notebook Get to know your team Don’t be that intern who is oblivious to his surroundings! The people at Facebook are fantastic, and an internship is a great opportunity to get to know the people you’re going to work with. There are many events for office employees, so be sure to go out and relax with your work buddies! It’ll make the experience a lot more enjoyable 😉😉 Beach event for the interns Work life balance . If you’ve worked too many hours and are no longer efficient, recognize that and take a break or stop for the day. The internship (and full-time work later!) is a marathon and not a sprint. There are a lot of fun things to do around the office and clear your mind if you’re stuck on a task. Take advantage of that. The view from the offices are pretty calming too! How I Landed a Facebook Internship and Converted it to a Full Time Offer

I recently re-published my two year old article with the intention to write a follow up piece. TL;DR: I learned to code (front-end) and built an MVP for a location sharing app but the backend service I relied on got shut down… leaving me in a not-so-ideal situation (read the full piece ). here I see four outcomes: Pixity can fail, be a hobby, become a lifestyle business or become a massive success. It failed. Well technically, I gave up on it. With no income, I didn’t have the luxury of redoing the MVP with another backend. My plan: work at another startup to gain startup experience. It was around this time I stumbled upon . Shoelace Some of the Shoelace team in SF After meeting with the founders I landed my dream job as a “full-stack” developer, after only and as a first hire at a fast-paced and accelerating startup. 2 months of coding experience, It has turned out to be quite the journey. From starting out at one of the founder’s kitchen table to going through multiple accelerators and a team of over 20, I can almost say “I’ve seen it all”. If you’re interested in Shoelace’s progress check out the . investor updates “How much backend experience do you have?” “None.” “Do you think you can pick it up quickly?” “Yes.” It’s not like I had a choice. Startups have a lot of business demands but are naturally strapped for resources — especially growing startups. This creates the perfect environment for learning. As Facebook says — “move fast and break things”. We moved fast, broke things and I learned a tremendous amount. I picked up Node, Express, Mongo, , and a bunch of other things (hiring, mentoring, Scrum, code and system architecture). SQL AWS After only 2 years at Shoelace (pretty much all my coding experience) I consider myself somewhat a . senior developer Why? I am now comfortable and confident that I can learn whatever languages/frameworks/tools that are needed in order to tackle a task — using “best practices”. The best way to learn to code is by . coding No matter how junior you are, learning how to code boils down to your work ethic and willingness to overcome problems. You’ll be hit with bugs that seem impossible to squash. But coding is also about grit. Coding is problem solving. It’s not about what you know , but rather it’s about knowing what it takes to make things work and arrive at a solution . now eventually Usually this means Googling and testing out every accepted solution on Stack Overflow while trying to understand why that solution worked (or didn’t). Potential over experience How do you land your first dev job? Here’s my advice for anyone trying to land their first dev job. This is how I did it, and it’s purely anecdotal, but take what you like and discard what you don’t … 1. Figure out something you want to build — don’t stress too much about what language and services you should use… . the point is to get something working 2. Break that into smaller components and watch tutorials on how to accomplish those tasks (i.e first make the signup/login page and then learn how to save the data into a database) 3. Tie those components together to complete your MVP 4. Repeat if necessary with different ideas until you feel comfortable in your ability to build things in whatever language you ended up going with 5. Apply for jobs and use your MVPs to sell your ability to learn what’s necessary to get the job done That’s it — create a small, simple app that you are proud of and show it off — that’s the secret. How I Landed a Dev Job With No Coding Experience

After graduating from the Grace Hopper Program (an all-women’s coding bootcamp) this summer, I spent the following three months on a Teaching Fellowship, mentoring the next cohort of GH students, and began my post-bootcamp in the second week of September. job search During my seven weeks on the search, I connected with 45 companies and received four offers. It’s now the end of October and I just signed on with The New York Times! I definitely caught some lucky breaks, and my own privilege certainly played a part in my success. But I also worked really hard to make this happen, and I’d love to share with you how I approached the job search. My approach People often think a job search entails sending out hundreds — or even thousands — of applications in order to snag a job. But personally, , and sent out only three actual applications. (and one of those was the interview, just so that I was officially on file.) It doesn’t have to be a numbers game. How, you ask? I connected with fewer than 50 companies after There a way to succeed in the job search with a “quality over quantity” philosophy. is The way I see it, there are two very different approaches people take to the job search: the “quality” route (networking) and the “quantity” route (submitting cold applications). My intuition told me the “quality” route would yield more benefits for the time spent, so I threw myself into it full-force. My strategy was simple: The beginning of the job application process for me was always talking to a person, regardless of whether that was a person I already knew, a person I found cold on LinkedIn, a person I followed on Twitter, a person whose email address I guessed at until I got it right, a fellow alumna on Slack. How did these different sources of people compare? Get through to “a real person” and ask to buy them coffee or chat on the phone. My main sources of company leads: My leads came from lots of different places, but I’ll break them down into categories: Each white star indicates an offer received from one of the leads in that category. who would connect me to their own companies or to their connections at others. This was definitely one of the easiest ways to get connected to a company — a friend would simply introduce me to a hiring manager or engineering manager on their team, or a friend at another company that interested me. If a friend was the source of the lead, the next step was usually a coffee chat. Friends, finding engineers on LinkedIn who worked there and messaging them. People are surprisingly willing to help out eager and friendly people who express interest in them. I’d say my response rate for this was 50%. Again, I would always ask for a coffee chat or a phone call. Companies I targeted and reached out to cold, especially ones geared towards recruiting. I especially had success at women-in-tech-focused recruiting events, one of which is where I met my manager and initially heard about the position I later took! Meetups and networking events, future either through LinkedIn or email. Some of these passive leads came to me simply because I had a fully fleshed-out LinkedIn profile with my skills prominently listed, making me easily searchable. Others came because people found my technical writing here on Medium and then reached out. One of my offers came from one of these passive leads. Recruiters and engineers who reached out to , me a mini-interview event from which I got of leads, but which came too late in my process. (Because I was a teaching fellow, I had started my job search five weeks prior to Hiring Day, and so I received the offer I took before I could go onsite with most of the Hiring Day companies.) My bootcamp’s Hiring Day, lots which, as I mentioned, comprised only a negligible portion of my leads, and ultimately got me nowhere. Cold applications, Tracking Tool: To track my job search, my bootcamp’s Career Success department suggested I use , and was it helpful. Asana boy, In Asana, each company has its own listing with comments, making it easy to track everything at once. As you can see, I gave each company a “task” listing, in which I would list the job listing and my connections there, as well as comments with each action I’d taken with that company so far, whether it was reaching out to someone, getting coffee, completing a phone interview, etc., and notes about how it went. Whenever I reached a new phase of the recruitment process with a company, I would physically drag the company’s listing up to the next category (e.g. Phone Screen, Coding Challenge, On-Site, etc.) This system allowed me to keep track of where I stood with every company at any given time. It also enabled me to find all the details for my relationship with a specific company in one place, as well as set a deadline to remind myself when to follow up. If I hadn’t done this, I would have gotten very mixed up with so many companies! The Recruiting Pipeline: Each company’s hiring process differs in its components — some companies had recruiter phone screens then immediately brought me onsite, others gave me technical phone screens, or take-home coding challenges (some timed, some untimed). Some on-site interviews involved white-boarding and others didn’t. Some involved architecture components, and others didn’t. In general, the smaller the company, the more relaxed I found their interview process to be. Heck, at one tiny company, I never once had to code for them — I just showed them my Github and that was enough. The tech giants, on the other hand, often have several rounds of grueling interviews. In any case, here’s how my pipeline went: I had pretty high yields from step to step, since I avoided sending applications cold into the abyss. As you can see, the “coffee chat” approach led to a much wider funnel than what you usually see— over half of my coffee chats resulted in a phone screen or referral, as opposed to many job-searchers’ pipelines, in which 300+ applications yields a dozen phone screens. In fact, two of my four offers originated in a coffee chat or informational call, and one of the others was from meeting someone in person at a networking event. For the coffee chats that didn’t lead anywhere, it was generally because either (a) the company wasn’t hiring, or (b) I was already about to take an offer, so it was just too late in my process. Moral of the story: Coffee chats are great. In general, once I snagged a phone screen, I found that my chances were pretty good from there. 66% of my phone screens resulted in a next step, and half of the ones that didn’t were companies turned down. Only two companies turned down after the phone screen. (I attribute this success, very simply, to lots of practice answering basic technical questions, and smiling and sounding pleasant and excited while on the phone.) I me Also, I found that referrals in big company systems often are not particularly helpful; the three that I graciously received sat in large HR systems and nothing ever became of them. What I Learned: All right, here’s the part where I share my hard-earned wisdom — lessons I learned both the easy way (from doing them and succeeding) and the hard way (from doing them and failing): not 1. Figure out what part of the job search you’re weakest at, and prioritize your time accordingly. The way I saw it, there were three main ways to spend time during my job search: Networking / generating leads Building out my portfolio Studying algorithms / practicing whiteboarding Between those three, I felt weakest in the networking department, so I spent the vast majority of my job-search time just reaching out and making connections. I had already finished a few portfolio pieces, and I had been practicing whiteboarding in bootcamp, so connecting with companies was definitely the most valuable way to spend my time. That said, if you don’t feel you have any portfolio pieces to talk about in your interviews, or if you’ve never stood in front of a whiteboard, your priorities might look different. 2. Fully fill out your LinkedIn profile to gain the attention of recruiters. My bootcamp’s Career Success Department required us all to update our LinkedIn with a professional photo and a pitch/summary, as well as . By listing these skills, you will show up in recruiters’ searches, so make sure you have them on your profile! list every one of the technologies we knew as a skill My cohort also all for those skills and for our closest teammates, which gave our profiles a stronger sense of legitimacy. This sometimes felt silly, but I feel confident now that my robust LinkedIn was one of the reasons so many recruiters and engineers reached out to endorsed each other wrote recommendations me. 3. Take interviews first from companies that interest you less, but also don’t wait too long to reach out to your dream companies. Timing was one of the most difficult parts of my job search. My general strategy was to initially take interviews with small companies that I was less excited about. This was both good and bad — it was great practice, but also meant I got offers before I had even gotten into the process with the companies I wanted to work for. really The approach I suggest: — alumni posting on the alumni slack channel about openings at their companies, for example. Tell everyone you’re interested, and take any interview you are given. The more interviews you’ve done, the better you will perform in future interviews, both behaviorally and technically. (And hey, you might even find that once you’re on-site at a company you had never heard of, you actually love the company!) Start your search by taking whatever you can find through easy leads especially if they’re tech giants. The hiring process at large companies can take longer than you anticipate, and you don’t want to start too late and feel pressure to take a smaller company’s offer before you even finish the process with the larger companies that excite you more. After you’ve done ~5 “practice runs”, reach out to your dream companies, 4. Make a list of questions to which you actually want the answers, and bring it to coffee chats and interviews. My friend and cohort-mate gave me this advice, and it was absolutely invaluable. She recommended I make a list of 5–10 “factors I care most about in a workplace”, which for me included factors like: Rachel Berkowitz a modern technology stack clear expectations and feedback a culture of openness, collaboration, and vulnerability when one “doesn’t know” something work-life balance structured onboarding Then, I turned those factors into 5–10 that I could ask at coffee chats or at the ends of interviews, like: questions What is the feedback mechanism on your team? How do engineers know how they’re doing? How do people learn on the team? Collaboratively or independently? What kinds of personalities tend to thrive at X company/X team? (This one often resulted in revealing answers that made me certain I didn’t want to work at certain places!) These questions not only made me look curious and interested to my interviewers and connections, but also gave me a better idea of whether or not the company fit what I was looking for. Remember, you’re interviewing the company just as much as they’re interviewing you! 5. Always google “common [insert language here] interview questions” before the interview. Even if you’ve done this before, it’s amazing what a refresher can do. I looked up before each interview, and it was amazing how many of those questions actually came up in my interviews. Because I’d seen them and prepared them, I had intelligent answers at the ready. “common JavaScript interview questions” Also, often included the specific questions companies had asked applicants in the past. I highly recommend looking at those before the interview as well. Glassdoor interview summaries 6. Send a LinkedIn request with a note after meeting ANYONE. After any coffee chat, networking event, or interview, I would immediately log onto LinkedIn and send a connection request to each of the people I met. , so that the person remembered who I was and what we talked about. In the note, I would thank the person for their time and ask about next steps or how to best keep in touch about opportunities at their company. I always included a note I built out my network, and now, even at the companies that I didn’t accept offers with this time, I can build relationships with the people I met and easily reach out in the future. It’s all about building new bridges! This was one of the most valuable things I did, both for immediate gains during my job search and for future value. 7. To get in the door at big companies, find a way to connect to an engineering manager or hiring manager. Initially, I thought referrals were going to be my golden ticket into the large companies I dreamed of working at. If I could just get someone — anyone — at the company to internally “put me in the system”, I would have an in. Right? Wrong. While a random employee referral might be enough at a smaller company, I found that even with a red referral flag next to my name, at big companies, my applications still just sat forgotten about in giant HR systems. My three official employee referrals at big companies went absolutely nowhere. A better approach is to find a direct connection to an engineering or hiring manager. , but reaching out cold might work, too. The point is, the manager is looking for a real person to fit their real needs. If you can speak with them, establish face and name recognition, and make a case for why are the person who can solve their problems and fit well on their team, your chances at a phone screen go up exponentially. I usually did this by asking people at the end of coffee chats if they could “connect me with an engineering manager or hiring manager on their team” you 8. Always follow up, even when your message is ignored. Initially, following up was something I never did — if someone didn’t respond to my email, or if I never heard back after they had passed on my resume, I assumed that meant I was rejected, I was bothering them, or they didn’t have time for me or want to talk to me. But the Career Success team quickly set me straight — if someone doesn’t reply, it might just be that your email got lost among the week’s flurry of emails. The people you’re messaging are generally not sitting at home and watching their inbox. I can’t tell you how many times my own follow-up reignited a lead. Wait five business days, and then follow up. 9. Create a brand for yourself and/or write technical blog posts. Besides networking, the two best things I did for my job search were to (1) , and (2) , where people could contact me after reading my articles. write about tech on Medium create a personal portfolio site I’ve always loved to write, so when someone recommended to me that I write about tech as I’m learning it, I jumped at the opportunity, never realizing how much it would help my job search. — I received emails, LinkedIn requests, and Twitter follows from developers who had read my articles and were interested in . Writing also just feels like a great way to give back to the tech community.
