In a TED Talk called , Dr. Csikszentmihalyi explains that when you’re fully involved in the process of creating something, your brain doesn’t have enough leftover capacity to monitor how your body feels. The chatter in your head fades away, and you forget if you’re hungry or tired. (or flow state) is an that I can only describe as a state of ecstasy in which everything makes sense and you feel zero friction. Flow — The Secret to Happiness Flow out-of-body focus Dr. Csikszentmihalyi and his team interviewed thousands of people in order to identify the key components that define the flow state. These seven points summarize how the people interviewed would describe flow: You’re totally involved in what you’re doing. You’re completely focused and concentrated. There’s a sense of ecstasy — of being outside the everyday reality. There’s great inner clarity. You know what needs to be done and you get immediate feedback on how well you’re doing. You know that the activity is doable and that you have the necessary skills to complete the task successfully. You lose your sense of self, and all of your worries and excuses drift away. You lose track of time and you’re fully focused on the present moment. There’s an intrinsic motivation — whatever produces flow becomes it’s own reward. How do you hit flow? Many of you have reached out via Twitter and asked how I hit flow and stay in it. Keep in mind that this is how I put myself into flow state. Whenever I can, I work near windows. If it’s summer, I try to work outside. I find that this helps open up my body, reduce stress, and prevent brain fog. Music: Ah, my favorite part! For me, music is the most critical part of hitting flow. With the wrong music, I can’t hit flow. With the right music, I can sink into a deep out-of-body focus within seconds. In general, I try to work to music without lyrics. Before entering flow, I’ll usually listen to hip-hop to put myself in a zone; but I’ll switch to one of my go-to playlists, as lyrics demand partial brain capacity and distract from reaching a fully focused state. I almost always work to mixes that last 60–120 minutes. This gets rid of the temptation to distract yourself by changing the song. It also seems to be the perfect amount of time when you’re in flow, as the end of the mix is a natural time to take five. If you need new earbuds, are the ones I always use when working from my computer. The quality is great and they cancel noise well. these 90% of what I listen to is deep house. If that’s not your thing, you’re totally missing out, but hopefully you’ll find something you like. Sit on a firm chair with your laptop on a table. Move your chair in so your elbows are close to your sides while your hands are on your keyboard. Scoot your butt to the back of your chair and sit up straight, feet planted flat on the floor — posture is key. I’ve found that it’s much more difficult for me to hit flow when I’m on a couch or when my legs are crossed. I’ve also found that it’s difficult to focus when sitting in a chair with wheels, as I have a tendancy to spin and move around, which distracts me from working. The perfect setup is different for everyone, so find what works for you. Listen To Your Body: So you have the environment, the music, the setup — now what? Stretch. Reach your arms above your head as high as you can, leaning from side to side. Release. Push your shoulder blades back and hold. Release. Twist around your chair and stretch your lower back. Stretch out your legs. Point your toes and stretch your ankles. Roll your head in a circle and stretch out your neck. Get your blood flowing. Take a deep breath and sigh. A few more. Force oxygen into your lungs. Damn, this feels good. Let’s Do This: Okay, now reset your posture. Music on. Head is in the zone. Priorities are straight. You’ve opened a new browser window so you don’t have 13 tabs demanding your attention. Or you have your sketchpad out, or whatever you’re focusing on. Your phone is on airplane mode. Let’s crush this. Close your eyes. Listen to the music. Move if your body tells you to. Feel it, whatever is. Think about what you need to accomplish. Get there. All the way there. Nothing can distract you. This is your zone and you are in full control. We’re ready to rock. You’re in flow. it Working In Flow: Reaching flow is like launching a rocket into orbit. It’s hard to get there, but once you hit it, it’s relatively easy to stay. Okay, maybe that was a dumb analogy, but you get the idea. As Dr. Csikszentmihalyi said, once you’re in flow, your brain doesn’t have enough leftover capacity to monitor how your body feels. I go hours without eating and get dehydrated. I sit in weird and uncomfortable positions without taking notice. The next thing I know, it’s five hours later and I’m hangry, totally dehydrated, and my leg is asleep because I’ve been cutting off the circulation for the last half hour. Again, listen to your body. Check back in with yourself once in a while. Be diligent about eliminating distractions as you work in flow. Keep in control. If you’re getting notifications from a specific program, close out. If your mind starts to wander, that means you’re not fully invested in what you’re currently working on — bring it back. Keep your focus frictionless and your mind a blank slate, unless it’s related to the task at hand. Thanks for reading! No, that doesn’t mean it’s worthless. The human body is awesomely complex. I am not a doctor nor a biologist. I am an amateur scientist, geek, fitness-nut, writer, programmer, and arm-chair philosopher. When it comes to medical advice, don’t seek it here. I cannot cure anything (. . . yet). But what I can do is share anecdotal and quantified evidence for what is “good enough”. “Good enough” is taking the latest in scientifically-rigorous studies and hacking them to produce beneficial results without the (extremely important but egregiously slow) official peer-reviewed scientific study to prove it. All my methods come from years of research and working with specialists. No bullshit crystals, chia rubs (it’s probably a thing) or money-grabbing diet and fitness fads. Important Disclaimer Good enough comes from research and experimentation. Good enough brings results. Good enough works. But before I start expounding on the system, I should elaborate on my baseline and how I finally determined to take my life back from this illness . . . (Don’t care about the personal stuff? Stay tuned for the next episode where I introduce the system.) I was struck down with Fibromyalgia on October 10, 2003 at the age of 17 in the second month of my senior year of high school. Yeah, not the best time in life to become bedridden and socially isolated. (All that existential angst and identity crisis and all.) While everyone was choosing their colleges, ending their summer flings, and preparing for their cookie-cutter University career paths (go Private School molding!), I was living on my parents’ couch, barely able to move, unable to read or think deeply without becoming extremely nauseated, in perpetual pain, having no clue what was going on with my body and mind. *Insert 4 months of every kind of test imaginable to figure out the cluster that was my health. Colonoscopies, GRI scans, CT scans, MRIs, lots and lots of blood panels, sleep studies, and all other kinds of fun stuff.* Finally, in January 2005, after eliminating the most likely candidates such as Lupus, thyroid disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Celiac Disease, a Rheumatologist and Infectious Disease Specialist diagnosed me with this very strange sounding chronic illness: . Fibromyalgia If you have never heard of it, just know that . No part of your body or mind is left unaffected. I’ve found that the best way to describe it to people is this: Fibromyalgia is all-encompassing symptomatically “It’s like having that inescapable exhaustion you experience when you’ve come down with the flu — but all the time. Mix that with the shooting nerve pain and intense muscle ache you get the day after being in a car accident. This is your constant state.” Or “It’s like having a phone that won’t fully charge combined with that hidden background app on your phone that, unless you are intent on managing it every day, drains your battery to 15% before you ever reach the office. Every. Single. Day.” Yes, it’s real. Yes, it’s awful. But no, it should never be an excuse to give up, whine, post inspirational quotes and images in one of your 6 Facebook support groups instead of actually doing something to make your life better. Because, you know, no one understands your pain or how awful your life is. (Yes, it’s very easy to do when you think no one understands your problems. But easy isn’t right. In this situation, easy is weak. Anyone can complain; few can overcome.) (Not familiar with Fibromyalgia? for a brief summary or for a more comprehensive explanation. Or ) It’s a problem that has a solution. It sucks tremendously, but it’s not an excuse to not LIVE. Go here here watch the recent Netflix Lady Gaga documentary. I spent the next 5 years bedridden. Life revolved around lying on the couch, listening to audio books and lectures, and extensive existential reflection. Circumstances forced me into a state of perpetual reflection, whereby the world outside faded away and my inner world became my vivid reality. When you have nothing but thoughts, time slows down and you perceive your life from without. You become an observer of self. Science and philosophy became my muses. I sought out every part of my psyche, evaluated the great historical and modern philosophies, ruminated, reflected, and repeated. For years. However, on the physical and symptomatic side, my progress was almost non-existent. I had sleep studies, medication after medication, gluten-free (before it was fashionable), lactose-free, and all kinds of specialty diets. Nothing seemed to be helping. I still was unable to have a life of significance. I was surviving in every sense of the word. Fibromyalgia would not kill me (it’s not terminal), but in a very palpable sense, it meant the death of my life. Then one day I changed: a friend told me to get a car, go to University, and get my life back. Yes, of course he was ignorant of the severity of my condition. How could he know what it was like to live with an “invisible” illness? You cannot empathize with one who has an illness you do not. No more than you can empathize with a mother who has lost a child or a soldier who has been taken prisoner in war. Empathy is distanced by analogy. And yet, he was right. There was nothing stopping me from regaining my life except the standard prognosis of the medical community. If traditional methods didn’t work, then it was time to start treating my own body and life as I had treated technology ever since I built my first computer with my grandfather at the age of 5: hack it. Looks cool . . . except he’s just reading news, building a lame web site, and . . . playing a game? Hacking has a bad rep outside of the tech community. Images of dark rooms lit only by an array of monitors positioned before hunched hoodie-strapped young men with over-sized headphones writing code as fast as they can type, — as they attempt to thwart impenetrable government and corporate firewalls to free the common man from their draconian overlords. (Yeah, that image was one of the first that came up when searching Unsplash for hackers.) That’s pretty cool stuff, but that’s not what I mean by hacking. A Berlin community called has the best definition I’ve found: SPEKTRUM A hack is a quick solution to a problem — maybe not the most elegant solution, but often the cleverest. Hacking is about using imagination and creativity to reinvent and reclaim the world — for good, for serious, or just for fun. The reason hacking is at the core of my approach to life is because it challenges the normal way of living and then couples it with experimentation that can be tested. It doesn’t wait around for a solution to come along — it creates one. I’ve always built my own computers, hacked video game systems to utilize the inherent power for tasks I found more useful (modchips anyone??), taken apart household gadgets to determine how they work, opted to learn through self-education when public and private was too conformist and irrelevant, etc. So why did I treat my body, mind, and lifestyle as if they too were not also systems that could be improved and optimized through more clever solutions? Analyze the system, find the flaws and weaknesses, hack, experiment, optimize, repeat. Take it apart, break it, repair, optimize, repeat After 15 years, I’ve optimized both my illness and my life’s axioms for personal and communal success (my , if you will). Everything can be hacked. How I hack my life to overcome my chronic illness

It’s been 2 years since I made the switch from 4 years working on my own startups into helping others as a , mentor and/or project manager. software developer No, it didn’t go as well as I had hoped, financially. Having achieved only one small exit (enough for a year off!). However, if I went back, apart from applying a bit more wisdom, I would do it all over again. Founding a is a great way to bootstrap a rewarding career in modern times, perhaps even better than a college degree. The knowledge and problem-solving skill acquired while launching a startup are valued by great companies. Companies that promote accelerated learning, personal freedom, and make sure their collaborators are well compensated for their input. startup I strongly believe however that if I carried these lessons from the beginning, I would not have had 3 failures and one exit, instead, I would now be a founder of a couple of successful companies. (Which I still plan on doing, but am currently taking a break, helping others is also a great and enlightening experience.) So, the lessons I wish I could go back and teach myself are: Chase negative feedback Go after as many people as you can for their opinion, keep the more critical ones around. If you convert those you convert anyone.Reality is a cold dark place, you must validate your ideas with that in mind. Positive feedback is warm and fuzzy, so it’s not representative of the challenges your product will face. Hard work does not replace Results A very common mistake in startup founders is to believe that success comes primarily from hard work. Some will make evident to others how they are sleeping little in order to put in more hours.However, if you put some of those long hours of “drone work” into thinking out strategies, it will allow you to reach the results you need with the least amount of work. This way you greatly increase your hourly output and reach goals faster. Validate before building / Don’t design while coding Don’t start by burying yourself and/or your team in weeks that then turn into months of development work. First create prototypes, using code-free tools, and iterate on them abundantly based on feedback.Business and design work should be completely decoupled from development. Since development takes easily 10x more and the pace is set by the slowest.You need to first gather feedback and to react to it fast and regularly, during the ideation and validation phase, which can come before coding. What you can’t do is more important than what you can do Your brain has a limited amount of work & quality to output.I’ll even go one step further and say that the less you do the more you have the mental freedom to think outside task scopes.So, yes, you’ll have to delegate. Delegation is probably the most important skill in any ‘leader’ or even team player. It allows you to scale your output and increase quality with the help from others.This is actually really hard though. Takes a lot of social skills, humility, confidence, or whatever works for you. But since it’s such an important skill I truly think it’s worth investing in.The next time you find yourself buried in work don’t just increase the daily work hours or the deadline, think about who can help you with it (or if you can adjust the strategy to require less work, but that’s a few chapters above). Learn from other’s mistakes You will learn tons from your experience, and this is without a doubt a huge, almost guaranteed value, you get from creating a startup.However, if your starting point sits on other’s experiences, your mistakes will be a bit more original, therefore more valuable to the community and yourself.There are many ways to learn from others, my favorite is attending meetups and becoming friends with people who have been through a lot or know anything better than me. There’s also ted talks, blogs, video blogs, books, online communities, etc. The community is more representative than friends or colleagues Friends and people who agree to help you are a great source of positive re-enforcement, either because they like you, because they don’t want to disagree with you, or because they truly believe in what you are doing. Hard to tell.Making them a very flawed source of feedback, only demonstrative of your inner circle, which is a far from accurate representation of reality.Instead of relying on inner circles it’s much more realistic if you go after acceptance and feedback from the community, be it potential clients, potential investors, other founders or industry experts. They can convert into organic unbiased followers, which is a great metric to nourish continuously.So, get out of your comfort zone and meet those people! Intelligence is overrated & equally distributed Attributing other’s success to their unique intelligence is denying yourself to learn from them.What matters is what people do, not how they get to the conclusions, that comes in an infinite amount of forms. Just base your actions on data and abundant feedback and you won’t have to be intelligent. Have a personal plan for if the startup fails that strengthens with what you’re doing Putting all your bets in one basket is incredibly stressful, and stress reduces IQ. So do yourself a favor, align your skill acquisition, newly made contacts or anything you can benefit from working for your startup into what could happen if it fails. Feel free to also update your LinkedIn or Angel.co and check a few offers from time to time, knowing what you are worth in the market is great for confidence. Concluding Launching a startup is a great career and personal decision, even if it fails.Feedback from people you don’t know is your most valuable resource towards success.Base your strategy on getting results with the least amount of work and delegate as much as possible to others, especially if they can deliver higher quality than you.Have a backup plan that benefits from what you are doing while founding your startup.
