I’m super passionate about helping others build their dreams and also interested in personal growth and what makes for good company culture. I also love all things France - the language, the people, the traditions, the food, the history, and the culture. Fun fact also, I used to run a cafe before I went back to university at 30 and spent 6 years doing a double degree in Mechatronics Engineering and Computer Science (I’d never touched a line of code outside of >dir /w before this!) What I’m seeing as a strong focus across the entire technology landscape is that AI has really become a major talking point and hit a major adoption phase. While I loved building this particular example (and it’s still really valuable for anyone getting started!), I think it’s perhaps only really scratching the surface of use cases we could see emerge with these 2 technologies and I’m looking forward to exploring them further - in fact, I’m currently working on a Bacalhau bridge that will enable people to call Bacalhau jobs (AI, ML + more) directly from their smart contracts! Do you usually write on similar topics? If not, what do you usually write about? I write on a variety of topics but predominately like to write full tutorials on how to build things with decentralized technology. Though I’m also interested in human cooperation, personal growth, and building good communities and workplaces. Great! What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) Sporadic!! Though I’m working on making it a much more prominent habit this year. I’ve always enjoyed writing and it’s just such a great medium for corralling your thoughts, honing in on your ideas, and open-sourcing them all for community input. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? Just starting!! I think some of my own tips (that I need to start adhering to more!), is 1. Keep a Trello board (or similar) of topic ideas and 2. Make a writing goal for each month - make it achievable and realistic and commit to spending x minutes (not hours!) per day on it :) - Make it an atomic habit and make the processes for ideas collection easy. How do you or your company intend to embrace the responsibility of this title in 2022? We are releasing a mobile app in April. It has all the pieces to fulfill the promise of I-Ally. What are some of the goals you’re looking forward to accomplishing in 2022 (whether it be through company initiatives or your personal journey)? In my personal journey, I’m looking to relinquish control over many things; In my company, I am looking to relinquish control over many things. As you look at the variety of concerning trends in the world around you, what solutions can you think of? Name three trends and three solutions. Be as brief or as detailed as you like. Millennials are going to be the biggest generation of caregivers, and we are not prepared. Solution: I-Ally needs to be adopted as a tool by employers and payers, and companies and organizations need to think about how they will help the caregiver rather than just the patient. Ultimately, gaming is most compelling when there is a perfect balance of potential outcomes. It is in everyone’s interest to respect the caregiver, including the caregiver themselves, and educate themselves. Disclaimer: They will be logging in to a container with minimal capabilities They won’t get shell , they will get a mock of a shell(sshesame) Any passwords that they try will work (to get all them h4ck3rs) This runs on a vanilla instance that I will destroy after this article If you don’t want to read all the implementatin the output can be found at the end of the article. Step 1 Docker: Docker is the obvious option , but i had a number of concerns , from attacks that run from the container triggering some kind of resource exhaustion (fork bombs , file number etc etc) to uploads, yes uploads i was concerned people uploading wrong content to the containers on my servers. Also i didn’t want to let all the bots log into the SAME container , i want to give one container per bot Step 2 Make Docker unusable: I’ll drop all the capabilities and then add the ones i really need: docker run -dt bechampion/honey --read-only --privileged=false --cap-drop all --cap-add SYS_CHROOT --cap-add SETGID --cap-add SETUID --cap-add CHOWN I’ve could’ve limited the memory too but i forgot about it . The second thing I’ve used is a project called sshesame which i forked ( ) and I’ve added some modifications. https://github.com/bechampion/sshesame Basically acts as an server and mocks a shell , it let’s you in and for any command you run it returns nothing for example: sshesame openssh That’s the server running you can see that my password was “anything “ , literally everything goes: So that’s the deal , it let’s you in using any password , and you can run commands all you want , they don’t return anything. Lastly I wanted to disallow internet access from the container itself as well as sshing into the host so iptables and sysctl helped here as: echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwardiptables -A INPUT -i docker0 -p tcp --destination-port 22 -j DROP Step 3 Docker TOO unusable: I realised after a little test that most bots where running and exiting in complete sadness , so i forked sshesame and added a number of commands, motds and PS1 promts , have a look at ( ) and other places too. uname -a https://github.com/bechampion/sshesame/blob/master/channel/channel.go#L46 Step 4 Give each connection a unique container: Well if i woul’ve used some normal docker port translation , for example docker run -dt -p 22:2222 image That would land all the attackers or bots in the , but Ididn’t want that , i want each individual bot/attacker in it’s own container. same container So xinetd and socat to the rescue: So that’s what the service looks like in xinetd , REMEMBER TO CHANGE /etc/services to match this port assignment . So every connection coming into port 22 will execute honey.sh , honey.sh looks like: The most important thing here is , i get the container ip and i run exec /usr/bin/socat stdin tcp:${DIP}:2222,retry=60 That sends all the traffic comming in from xinetd to the container in question in it’s native port , that happens to be 2222 Step 5 Log all them commands: Before i came across sshesame , i was thinking stracing all the containers or auditd , auditd came in handy to be honest i got to log all the execve calls with something like: -D-b 8192-f 1--backlog_wait_time 0-a exit,always -F arch=b64 -S execve I managed to get something similar with strace as well: strace -ffffff -p 10521 -s 100000 #optional -e trace=execve Ultimately , I’ve decided to use sshesame default json logging , which is stdout when running in the container.
