This is the first article, in a new series where I’ll be sharing my journey of building an app for learning a language with Jetpack Compose. I’ll show you my daily progress, how the app evolved over time, why I made certain decisions, and so on. I’ll also share the new things I learn along the way that might be useful to you. When I started programming, one of my first projects was a website that I used to review words I was learning in other languages. Fast-forward a few years, and I need something similar. This time, however, I’ll be building it using Jetpack Compose and aiming to publish it to the Play Store. If you’re a junior engineer, this series will show you my process - how I went from nothing to having an app that’s ready to be published to the Play Store. If you’re a senior engineer, this series will hopefully teach you some new things about Jetpack Compose and might even cause you to rethink the way you solve some problems. Background I’m calling this app Lingua, it’s “language” in Latin. It’s supposed to be a combination of Duolingo and Anki plus some other things I think will be useful. One of my goals for 2023 is to learn Italian, and I also need to spend some of my time actively creating something instead of just passively learning new things. I’ve read a lot about Compose, now it’s time for me to put that knowledge into practice (later I recognized that I actually knew very little about Compose). If I arrive at a version that looks good and I think it makes sense, I’ll publish it to the Play Store. This is the first draft I created in Figma; it is far from the final version but guides me in the right direction. I’m building this app iteratively, so as you will see the first versions of the app will look pretty ugly but that’s okay, the initial goal is to get something that works. Later, I can come back to it and improve the design. I’ll split my updates into days, so you can have a reasonable idea of how long it took to build this, I’m spending about 1hr on this daily. Tools and Libraries To keep track of my tasks, I’m using Notion. For the design, I’m using Figma. I’m using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. I’ll mention the other libraries as they come into play. Day 1 Below, you can see my first draft of the home screen. I’ll have some kind of progress section that’ll show how much the user learned in a given day, in a given week, and in a given month. I also want to add a strike feature to motivate people to keep learning. Data is pretty valuable to me, so I’ll also add detailed charts about things that might be of value to the user. Instead of just having the usual “Practice” most apps have I also want to build a custom practice that lets you choose what you want to practice. And finally, I want to show the list of courses/decks the user is subscribed to. I’ll call these cards “decks” from now on but the name may change in the future. } Keep in mind that this is my first “big” application with Compose so I’ll certainly make mistakes and learn along the way. I then created the other components but for now, I’m just assigning hard-coded values to them. One thing worth mentioning is how I achieved cropping for flag images. I’m using Coil. I was not able to add cropping directly to the image, so I wrapped it with a and defined a rounded corner for only the bottom end corner because the top start corner is already cropped by the card. } By the end of day 1, I had created the screen you can see below, it’s not functional yet but it’s a good step in the direction I want to go to. Day 2 On day 2, I just built the library screen, it’s pretty simple right now. It lists the available decks. In the future, I’ll add more sorting options to make it easier for the user to find what they want. It also has a button for the user to create a new deck. This is what I had achieved by the end of day 2, nothing special. Just a and a . I actually also created the for this screen so I just need to hook this up to a data source later and the correct data will be listed. LazyColumn FloatingActionButton ViewModel Day 3 On day 3, I started working on the deck creation screen. Basically, I need at least one deck with cards to be able to develop the rest of the application so that’s why I’m going this route first. As you can see below this screen is not as simple as the other ones. First, you can name your Deck, I’ll build this initially. After that you can change it to public/private, I’ll leave this for later. Everything will be public for now. On the top right, you can see a flag, that’s a cool functionality but I won’t be implementing it right now too. In the middle, we have the most important part of this screen, the cards that compose a Deck. For now, there will only be one type of card and it’s just . Input <-> Output For example, the English word Bee is Ape in Italian so it’d be something like Bee <-> Ape. This allows me to do a few things: Show the word “Bee” and the user has to type “Ape”. Show the word “Ape” and the user has to type “Bee”. If there are more words I can show something like “Ape” and the user has to choose a word from a list like (“Apple”, “Bee, “Pie”). This is basically a simple version of Duolingo. Later I’ll be adding support to sound and image but for now, that’s just additional complexity. Finally, we have a button to add new cards and a save button to save everything. I ran into a few problems like how do I pass the deck id to this screen? I’m using the same screen for adding and editing decks so the id had to be an optional parameter. I solved this by creating a new object in and adding the and methods. LaunchedEffect By the end of day 3, I had built only a small portion of this screen. Day 4 By day 4 I stopped working on the screen to create decks and moved on to the screen to create cards. Decks and cards are the foundation of this app, everything else in the app will revolve around them. For now, I’ll only develop the “Text” type or as I called it earlier Input <-> Output. It’ll contain one field for the input and one field for the output (I need to come up with better names for these things lol). Later I also want to add an “Info” type that works a little bit differently but that’s for later. This screen is pretty similar to the previous one, I have my and EditDeckCardRoute . We also have 2 text inputs and a FAB to save the card. EditDeckCardScreen One difference here is that to create a card I need the deck id and to modify the card I need the card id. Today, investing in any product takes more than just learning about the product. Your prospects want a complete picture of what it means to get involved with your company. They want to know things like what do you value as a business? What is your buying process like? What does your customer service, support, and success experience look like? Even though they can get all these answers from your sales reps, they want to get authentic answers from people who have used your product before. Getting Started with Customer Testimonials: A Beginner's Guide

Brenden Mulligan, after selling his startup "LaunchKit" to Google, went all-in on his love for building products. He built ten products in 12 months. Just imagine, you have just successfully sold your startup that you worked on for years to a company like Google. What would you do next? Maybe go on a trip to the Bahamas? Or start an investment firm? Or just chill around for a while and do nothing? Brenden Mulligan, the person who sold his startup “LaunchKit” to Google, did none of those. Instead, he decided to go all-in on his love for building products. Over the next year of selling his company to Google, he built ten products in 12 months. Not all of them succeeded; the goal for Brenden was not to make successful products. It was, instead, to rebuild his muscle of taking an idea, building on it, and taking it in front of people as soon as possible. That too, all on his own! Taking no external help or hiring people. It sounds insane and a hectic undertaking. Doesn’t it? But that’s just the kind of person Brenden is. A true serial builder. Taking ideas from 0 to 1 and doing it multiple times over and over again. That’s just what Brenden loves to do. It was his way of taking a break after some grueling years of running a startup and selling it. I had the pleasure to get an insight into Brenden’s builder head. He talks to me about how he began his career journey, the many products he built along the way, and how he ended up at Google. Besides, he also told me about how he spends his day, what he does to get creative, and why he always indulges in more than one project. Let’s listen from the man himself. Brenden introduces himself Hi, I’m Brenden Mulligan, currently the Head of Product at , a company playing in the social fintech space. Besides, I’ve built a couple of dozen products in the past, some bootstrapped, some venture-backed. I’ve also sold companies to other companies like Google. CommonStock I’ve had a winding career, and the overall theme has been that I love building products. On building ten products in 1 year So that came after I had done a startup for 3-4 years and then sold it to Google, where again I spent 3-4 more years. When I left Google, I wanted to rebuild that muscle of taking an idea, building on it, and putting it out in the world. I wanted to go 0 to 1 on my own with no-one else involved. Hence, I started building a framework that could help me rapidly deploy different projects. I wore all the hats for all the projects I made; that is, I did everything from coding to launching to marketing, basically everything. Some of the projects were small 8-10 hour projects; others were multi-week to over a month to get the MVP out. If a project took more than a month, I knew it was too complicated, and that’s something I didn’t want to take up. The approach was to build a product, put it out and see how it resonates. If it works, I will work more on it, and if it doesn’t, I’ll put it off or let the few people who want to use it, use it. It was about experimenting with different ideas and testing different things. It was my way of taking a break after all those hectic years of working on a startup and selling it. This whole exercise was more about having fun, exploring myself, than building something really big and successful. On his beginnings I built crappy websites for people in high school to show off my “web-design and graphics company.” I made a website for my stepdad and a local restaurant. I think a lot of people get started that way. My first real startup was called “Artist Data,” which was around 2006. It was around the time MySpace had come to life, and digital music was the thing. The music industry struggled to figure out how to manage postings on all these different websites about music tours. I had experience working in the music industry, so I built a tool to solve this problem. It was basically like, you enter tour details on this tool, and it’ll spread it across to all these different websites. I spent 3.5 years working on that, and I went into debt as I had no clue how to build a revenue model around that tool. For me, that was the best education I ever got. Although, in the end, I was fortunate enough to sell it to another company in the music tech space. That got me out of debt, got me into San Fransisco, and set me on a path where I could do this again and do it better this time. Even though “Artist Data” could not be a successful business, it was a great product, and it got me speaking at music conferences. I was constantly talking to musicians and hearing their pain points; one of the big ones that came up was websites to help them set up an owned audience on the internet like email lists. Sites like MySpace could fall apart one day, so musicians needed a medium to engage with their followers directly, and email is a great way to do that. But how do they collect emails? By having their own site. My following product, “OneSheet,” solved this problem. It helped artists build their own websites, connected with their social media, and they could start building an audience by collecting email addresses. More products that Brenden Built Another product we made is “Cluster,” basically a location-based image platform. A tool to create an album by aggregating all the pictures taken at the same location at the same time. By everyone who’s there. It was so cool! Eventually, we pivoted away from a location-based album to an album of known people together who could bond over a shared album, like the birth of a child album shared with the entire family. Cluster still has a bazillion users; a friend of mine runs it now. We actually built multiple apps upon Cluster; they were 90% the same code base, 10% was to tailor it for the specific use-case we were targeting. For example, for teachers, we made an app called Homeroom. Using this app, teachers could share pictures of students via a shared album with the parents. It has features very tailored for schools. The app is still there. The story behind the company that got acquired by Google After building so many apps, we realized it’s a colossal pain to launch these apps. For example, if you wanted to check reviews, you’d have to go to the app store every day to check, or if you want your sales numbers, you’d have to go login to iTunes. We ended up making a tool to pull all this information and put it in Slack, which was just getting started at that point. That tool we made was called “LaunchKit.” It was a set of integrations with Slack. So once you had launched an app, you could have a Slack channel where all your reviews would come in. You could have another channel for your sales. That was the product that started going crazy. The other big problem that we solved was when you had to launch an app, you had to upload screenshots of different screen sizes – iPhone 4, 5, 6, iPad. It took forever to get these in place back then. We built a small product called “Screenshot Builder,” where you could upload one screenshot and export it in many different formats, which solved the problem. We ended up building an entire suite of developer tools; all focused on launching iOS-based products. That was “LaunchKit,” and that’s what Google acquired. At the time, Google had acquired Firebase for their developer tools, and they also wanted to get into marketing tools. That’s where the LaunchKit acquisition happened. On dabbling into multiple things. I think it’s always good to have multiple projects or streams of conversation that remind you of what life is like on the outside. If you’re doing just one thing, you can get too enclosed in that, and it can hurt your worldview. So I still do at least two things. I spent a lot of time last year coaching CEOs and product managers. I’d coach them around product management and hiring good product talent. I still do this with a couple of clients. I believe the best way to learn is to teach, so when I work with these heads of products and CEOs, I get to learn new things that I can even implement at CommonStock. Besides that, I’ve one project that survived well from the ones I tried- “ .” It’s a website builder for podcasters, as simple as that. It’s my favorite type of project as technically, it’s relatively simple, and it’s a tremendous value add for the community. PodPage That project is at a maturity stage, so I don’t have to spend a lot of time on it actively. I have a team working on it. For me, it’s not something I have to work on; it’s just something I can work on for a couple of hours a week and put my builder hat on. I’m not looking to build any more products now. CommonStock is at a stage where we are looking to scale, so the creative part of my brain is all going towards CommonStock. Brenden’s typical day I’ll put a caveat that we don’t have kids, so that makes it a little straight-forward. I usually wake up at around 7:30. From 8 to 9, I grab a coffee and walk our dog, who’s like our kid. While on the walk, I check-in with all the PodPage stuff that needs my attention. By 9, I’m at my desk to start my day at CommonStock. We have a team coffee at around 9:30 and the team stand-up at 9:45. Work at CommonStock goes on till about 5:30 or 6. Then again, from 6 to 6:30, I’ll do another check-in with PodPage stuff. Then I start cooking with my wife and start winding down the day. My wife’s a nurse; she goes to bed by about 9:30. If I stay up for a few hours after that, I’ll try to do some focused or creative work in those hours. Usually, I go to bed around midnight. Exciting use of Google calendar at Google When I was at Google and wanted to ask someone for coffee, they’d say, “Just put time on my calendar.” To me, it was weird to be able to manipulate other people’s calendars. Another odd thing at Google was that if someone put something on your calendar and you didn’t decline it, it was a default yes. I took a little time to get used to this. At Google, if you’re added to a meeting, you’re expected to show up unless you specifically say no. Anyway, that trained me to use the calendar to plan my day and keep track of my time. Move your body to get creative There was a time when I was experiencing intense anxiety, both in my personal and professional life. It was killing my creativity. At the time, I was the CEO of a company, and I was supposed to be creative, but I just couldn’t get out of my head. I was working with an executive coach and a therapist, and both said that if you’re sitting and your brain is going crazy, you need to get up and move your body. Because if you keep sitting still, all your energy will go to your brain, and it’ll go crazy. So get up and get moving; that could mean doing a workout session or going for a walk. It’s for that reason that I still go on a lot of walks. I use the fact that I have a dog that needs to be walked as an excuse to out and get myself moving. It helps me keep sane and also be creative when I need to. Using Mailman to deliver happiness I don’t use for the intended use case, i.e., avoiding distractions. But I use it for delivering happiness, so all my notifications for new product sales come to me in batches of happiness via Mailman. Mailman All the messages that I get via Mailman are like that, a new subscription for my product or someone making a payment. In that way, Mailman delivers happiness for me. One extra hour a day I feel I have enough time in my day and don’t feel the need for an extra hour in my day. But if I could get a teleporter with an extra hour, I’d be sitting on the beach with my wife. I’d make it a rule not to spend that hour on anything productive. That would be the way I’d spend it. Because you meet these people, real people, and see the good and the bad in them and realize we're all the same. The struggle is creating that level of empathy in other people who can't move to another country and don't have a desire to learn new cultures. How I Adopted the Model, View, Controller (MVC) Architectural Pattern in JavaScript

Hey guys, hopefully  you are doing well, today is an introduction to get started with Grandjs the promising nodejs framework! What is Grandjs? Grandjs is a javascript server side framework for building scalable web applications with solid architecture in nodejs What is the difference between grandjs and express? As anyone live in this planet hears every day about a new javascript framework and library and don't know why this happens or what is the difference between these new frameworks and the current frameworks!! Expressjs is amazing and great framework, it have been maintaining nodejs development applications for many and many years, it gives you the ability to create, build anything you want because it's simplicity! One concern on express, it's doesn't developed for javascript ES6+ features, it's a great choice for any type of applications but it doesn't have a new vision based on the current javascript state Why Grandjs? Grandjs is build on typescript to get the benefits of typescript types, decorators and ES6+ features such as classes and so on However Grandjs is built upon typescript, it's available for usage also in javascript without any need for compilation or code transpiling. Grandjs gives you the ability to create solid routing architecture based on javascript classes, it gives you the ability to write one router which can be extended for different purposes and uses, it also gives you the ability to specify middle wares in an organized way for each route, router or apply global middle wares over the whole app. These routing features gives you a full control over your routes to customize and consume your routes in different ways for different purposes When it comes to rendering dynamic pages, you may find yourself puzzled to chose one good template engine contains everything you need, you may   choose handlebars, ejs, pug or any other template engine, but have you asked yourself why a template engine in a language has template literals and JSX like javascript? Also Grandjs accepts many expressjs packages to be used inside it, it accepts using body-parser for parsing request body, cookie-parser for parsing cookies, sessions, morgan, express-fileupload and many other packages that can be used by injecting them inside the app by using this function app.use() However using these middlewares, Grandjs includes also a built in methods such as native request body parsing  and fileupload without a nead to middlewares! Now for the tricky part, we need to setup Sass but I don’t want to have to eject from create-react-app. I followed this . tutorial npm install --save node-sass-chokidar This will create .css files of our .scss files, which I’m not super crazy about but for now lets roll with it. We will want to ignore our css files in git, so add src/**/*.css to our .gitignore file. Install npm-run-all so we can include our scss build in npm start npm install --save npm-run-all In the package.json in the npm scripts, add build-css and watch-css, build-js and watch-js, and modify build and start to use all our new scss stuff. Now, that we have all our setup done lets get some basic layout items in place using Bulma. Basic Layout and Header Let me take a quick minutes to talk about my file structure because its a little different then what you might be use to seeing. Fractal File Structure I first found the idea of . The idea wasn’t very clear the first time I read the article but one thing popped out at me and it think I understand it. I could be completely wrong, but never the less, my method has worked VERY well from me other the last few months. Instead, we are keeping our components in their parent folder, using for each component name, and for that components children folder. The only real exception here is App.js is technically a child of index, but I’m not sure that counts 🤔. PascalCasing camelCasing The benefit of this is that we can clearly see that Header, Content, and Footer are all components used in the Layout component which is used in the App component.    |- Footer.js Then we don’t have any real indication to the hierarchy of components or which components Layout.js is even used on, where as the fractal pattern shows you exactly who uses what components and where. Its a clear parent child structure, and layouts can even include a shared folder for components only shared within layout children. Remember how I mentioned key value structure earlier. This was the idea that made this all click in my head. So if you take my first example you think of it like this: src: {

} Our site starts to look like JSON data… kinda, but you get the point. A “key” is always a component .js file. The “value” is as always folder with its key’s name and it contains all of the children components. Where this really starts to shine is in your store, which I keep separate from my presentation layer (app). We can now start structuring our store like our data structure. This works REALLY well with NoSQL. We will get more into this later. Lets start with the App In the root Create a folder named app and create file in it named Layout.js In the app folder, create folder named layout In the layout folder, create 4 files: Site.js, Header.js, Content.js, and Footer.js will call the Layout component and later include our Redux Store. App.js will contain and , which are just a wrapper for the site and content so we can get flexbox set up correctly, and and components. For now, we are not going to try and do anything thing fancy with it, just the simple, straight forward Switch and Route. In our layout folder add a new file call Router.js . This router will live inside the on our Layout.js file. This wills house our basic top level pages. Content <Content>

</Content> Additional Routers components can be created in pages to add deeper nested routing. Our naming conventions for those in the future will be their parent component name and Router. Example, BlogRouter.js or HomeRoute.js. , they will live in a folder called blog.
