The TechBeat: A Deep Dive on Digital Identity: Why You Need to Check Out Genies Traits Framework (2/1/2024)

What if your avatar in the Genies Ecosystem encoded not only your visual representation but also who you are – your personality, quirks, and all? The Traits Framework at Genies is our approach to bringing multi-layered depth and dynamism to your digital identity: depicting not just what you look like, but also describing what your personality is like. Why do we want to do this? Because we think your online persona should grow and change just like you do in real life. It's all about making the digital world more personal and responsive to who you are. There’s nowhere else where you can be part of an ecosystem that not only comes with amazing high-fidelity avatars but also a high-fidelity description of the inner self and personality of someone in the digital world. We describe a little bit of this in our previous , but we’d like to dive deeper into our methodology so you can understand how we’ve designed our Traits Framework and how it describes your digital avatar’s inner self. It's like giving your digital self its own unique flavor. blog post The Origins of Our Traits Framework We had two initial requirements for our Traits Framework that our product team set out as goals It must be comprehensive enough to describe a person relatively accurately but also uniquely. It must be simple & straightforward enough for developers to build innovative custom experiences based on your unique Trait profile. Based on these two requirements, we knew we had to bring in experts to do proper discovery work in building out the foundation of Traits. Therefore, we brought in a team of psychologists to work directly with our product team in building the foundation of our innovative framework. The psychologists helped build a clinical and scientific foundation for our framework and helped audit our creative process to ensure rigor in design. The Game Designer helped provide a developer perspective in architecting this framework and is now developing flagship examples that will make it straightforward for a new genre of personality-based Experiences to be built by anyone building within the Genies Ecosystem. We first worked with the psychologists to pull inspiration and research from other personality systems (Jungian Archetypes, the 7 Chakra System, 5 elements in Chinese medicine, and the 9 Enneagram Personality Types), but in parallel, we also looked to innovate in creating our own structure that would work specifically for our ecosystem where we’re able to have a bit of creative leeway to make personality profiles much more fun and engaging especially as we need to pair them with Experiences. Eventually, our focus narrowed to combining the 7 Chakras System with a gaming approach of multi-layered Traits (i.e., FIFA’s DEF or “Defensive” stat is actually a composition of multiple sub-traits each with their own values), forming the bedrock for the current Traits Framework. Clinical judgment from psychologists and qualitative research methods helped us to distill each of the 7 Chakras into 7 categories, each with three descriptive Traits that uniquely describe a different facet of that respective category. We then worked with the psychologists to generate a list of 21 Traits in total (3 Traits per category, 7 categories) making sure that we don’t generate so many Traits that it’s impossible for developers to build against, but making sure we have enough variety in Traits such that every individual can eventually build up a unique Trait DNA profile. As seen in the graphic above, these 21 Traits can also be beautifully grouped by “Mind”, “Gut”, and “Heart” type Traits where Mind are the more intellectual Traits, Gut Traits are the instinctive Traits, and Heart Traits are the emotional Traits. We’ve also color-coded each category based on the chakra system to give each personality type more expression and something for both users and developers to hold on to. As we started to leverage this framework to create custom personality-tailored experiences, our Game Designer gave us valuable feedback to simplify the system as much as possible to make the development experience as easy for devs as possible in the near term. Thus, we then worked to focus on 7 Traits to start off with - one from each category that the psychologists felt epitomized each category the best and was most accessible to users. We are not removing the remaining 14 Traits; eventually, we will want to layer in the two additional Traits within each category as we expand our Framework to create better fidelity. These are the final starting 7 Traits that we ended up with along with their illustrative Trait stones that can be gained by users within the Genies Party ecosystem. This personality Trait dimension presents a unique opportunity for users to learn about themselves from spiritual, psychological, somatic, and material perspectives. It’s an invitation to reflect on who you are, who you want to be, and to see aspects of yourself reflected in the Genies ecosystem. This is not the end though! As we build out the Genies Party ecosystem, there will not only be these Foundational 21 personality Traits but also many other Traits added that will gradually create more fidelity as more complex Traits grow from these Foundational Traits. Some of these you can start to experience in our ! personality quiz Additionally, we are looking to expand and test additional Traits like Physical Traits, which are useful for games within the Genies Party ecosystem as developers may find these Traits easier to understand. The first physical Traits that you will be able to gain for your avatar in Genies Party are “Strength”, “Stamina”, and “Speed.” How Will a Genies Party User See These Traits? As a user builds out their Trait profile in Genies Party, they will be able to collect and build on the Trait stones that correspond to their personality, with their most prominent Traits shown closer to their Avatar. There’s no “best” Trait value or combination for users, you are your own unique person and every profile will be a relatively unique combination of scores for each Trait. It’s like a Trait DNA that’s created for each user and constantly evolving based on your actions within Genies Party. Your Trait profile will be developed through what you say and do in Genies Party. Every conversation and every experience could shape your profile based on your behavior. It’s also fun seeing how your Trait profile could evolve and change over time, maybe even to characteristics you wouldn’t have expected! Don’t worry, if you don’t like your Trait profile, you can always reset your Traits and start over just as you would be able to completely change up your avatar appearance. Because this Trait profile is a result of your actions taken in the digital world, it’ll truly become a horoscope of your personality. Through Genies Party, we’d also capture insights about your inner self that you may not have been able to realize through any other platform, allowing you to compare your true self to friends and Creators. “Am I more similar to my friend John or Claire?” “Would I be compatible with Timothee Chalamet?” Finally, the personalized experiences brought to life by your Traits in Genies Party are set to redefine avatar-based gaming. They unlock a new realm of customized games that not only enhance how you can socialize your identity but also add a whole new tailored-to-you dimension of multiplayer interactions. We’ll touch on this in the next section along with some challenges of balance that we’ve thought of between Traits. It’s important to note that although the creation of this Framework is rooted in empirical and scientific work, our aim is to still make it fun with somewhat mystical/metaphysical leanings, rather than a more standard personality profile measure like the Myers-Briggs or the Big Five personality Traits. How Will Custom Experiences Be Built Against These Traits? Devs should generally not be using Traits to modify the difficulty of a game. Our recommendation for types of ways 3rd party devs can develop against Traits are as such: - Through cosmetic changes in avatar, environment, and VFX, devs can provide unique Trait-based experiences that don’t directly impact game mechanics. This rewards players with a sense of achievement without disrupting the game flow. Cosmetic - Through narrative changes in game flow, story, or progression, a user’s Traits can change the way NPCs interact or how the game progresses in story. Narrative - Through specific Trait values, a user may be given a shortcut through a game experience. Shortcuts/Paths If devs have created multiple archetypes of characters in their game, Traits can be used to assign an archetype to that player. Archetypes - - Things are the smart interoperable 3D objects of the Genies Ecosystem. Traits can be attached to Things developers create, adding another depth and dynamism to not just avatars, but also the objects that you carry around. Things For example, if users have a high Calm Trait in a Tamagotchi-type game, they may be more likely to find calmer pets to raise. Similarly, if a user picks a calmer pet to raise within that same game, their Calm Trait value may increase. Another example is if in a racing game, a user comes in with a specific Trait, they may get 3 race bonuses to pick from based on their specific Trait, whereas someone coming in with a different Trait may be selecting from 3 different race bonuses. Cosmetically, you may notice that Caring Trait users may have a pink heart-particle aura and Ambitious Trait users may have glowing red exhausts. We do not want users to use Traits for gating or power level purposes within their games to avoid balance issues. It’s also important not to only have direct player competition within games based on Traits to not have to contend with “which Trait is better” type of questions for each game. If you have concerns about being assigned a Trait profile that doesn't resonate with you, we have a thoughtful solution: Things x Traits. Envision this: each item your avatar equips carries specific Traits. This allows you the flexibility to customize your Trait profile to suit various experiences, ensuring that each interaction can be shaped by your choices and the items you choose to equip, giving you the power to own your gaming experience. We’ll touch on our innovative Things Framework and the intricacies of that system another time. How do Developers Access Traits in Our Developer Kit? We've integrated an API into our devkit scripting, allowing developers to access Trait values ranging from -100 to 100. While the exact number of a Trait isn't directly shown, this range simplifies the application of Traits in-game logic. For instance, a developer can use a formula like `if(max(calm, 0) * RNG > 50) success! Reading Traits: Else failure to apply the positive aspect of the calm Trait in a random number generator (RNG) check. This approach simplifies complex calculations, making the development process more efficient. Our API allows developers to adjust Traits in terms of Large, Medium, and Small increments, either positively or negatively. For example, a period of low actions per minute (APM) with successful outcomes might prompt a Positive Medium adjustment to the Calm Trait. Writing Traits: Conversely, a high APM with few successes could lead to a Negative Medium adjustment. We're also exploring a 'batching' API for more granular games, allowing developers to accumulate Trait changes and send them in batched API calls. This ensures smoother and more efficient Trait management in our devkit. To further simplify Trait adjustments, we're considering offering developers various controllers that they can easily integrate and configure. These controllers would respond to different gameplay aspects, like APM and success rates, to automatically adjust Traits. By simplifying Trait management through intuitive APIs and developer-friendly tools, our goal is to empower developers to create a completely new genre of more engaging and dynamic games that are effectively customized to each user's Trait profile. I had just finished reading a tech article online when I logged on to my account. I scrolled through my news feed scanning through recent posts and videos. The red circular banner containing the number 1 drew my attention to the single new notification I had and I clicked on the icon. Facebook It was a new post from the web developers group I was a member of. I then opened the message which would go on to amuse me and inspire this article. It was something like this; Hello everyone. Please, I need a React developer. I used ChatGPT to create a web app but I do not know how to run the code. I need a web developer to help me turn my code into a website. I chuckled after reading the message. From the reactions to the post, I wasn’t the only one who found it funny. A couple of laughing emojis were already deposited on the post. I then held down the reaction icon, selected the laughing emoji, and joined other developers in the shared amusement. Another person misled by the craze! The ChatGPT Craze! The ChatGPT craze has taken over the internet! Which other robot uprising are we speculating on? It’s happening before our eyes. The internet is agog with tweets, discussions, code, videos, memes, etc. gotten from interactions with ChatGPT even though the bot was launched just a few months ago. To cap this up, The Guardian newspaper reported that the bot got up to after its release. 100 million users only 2 months That’s just mind-blowing! I keep saying that the rapid rise in popularity of ChatGPT among tech-savvy and just regular people alike is a wonder that needs to be analyzed. Many great tech products often take years to rise to such prominence. But the chatbot accomplished it in months. While I acknowledge the TikTok challenge-like trend of ChatGPT as a remarkable achievement for technology, I believe it's crucial to address a significant problem that affects widely adopted products like this. To put it plainly, Hype! Big Hype!! The internet is full of reviews heaping praises on the great capabilities of the chatbot. And while this is mostly true, some of these influencers go overboard to create the impression that ChatGPT is an omnipotent tech genie of some sort. They make people feel like anyone can create any kind of complicated software with ChatGPT even if they know absolutely nothing about coding. This is obviously false. While ChatGPT is quite advanced at generating code, it actually needs a lot of guidance to properly organize this code to standard. And even after this, the code it generates often needs a considerable amount of debugging to work well. Hence, it will be quite difficult for a non-developer to create software with ChatGPT. A simple look at the ChatGPT homepage will highlight some of the weaknesses of the bot which the creators endeavored to state as clearly as they could. I will highlight them below; Limitations: May occasionally generate incorrect information May occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content Limited knowledge of world and events after 2021 While these instructions are not specific to coding, they clearly show that the bot is not the omniscient, omnipotent genie some people have come to think it is. Fixing the ChatGPT Web App After having a good laugh, I eventually reached out to the client that made the post and was able to see the code he had generated with the bot. Turned out that he was trying to build a fully responsive React and Javascript blog site with up to ten different pages with the bot. Of course, it was ridiculous to expect ChatGPT to perfectly build something like that with one paragraph of instructions he typed, however detailed. But after watching a influencer who was just trying to promote his video imply that it could be done, who could blame him for trying? It’s just a website, right? He had heard that that was the easiest to do. Youtube Lol… Well, suffice it to say that the code he generated was never going to do what he imagined it would do even if all the bugs were corrected and the many omitted dependencies were installed. So, I gently but clearly explained to him; You need a web developer to build a standard web app for you. ChatGPT is not your tech genie! At least not yet. Software developers are!! And we got to work building his blog. To Conclude: ChatGPT is a formidable manifestation of generative AI but software development goes beyond writing code. Developers plan, implement, debug, test, refactor, compile, release, and maintain software. ChatGPT can’t do most of those things, yet. If well-guided, ChatGPT can create quite complex software but you most likely need a software developer for that. Web development is often touted as the easiest to get into among the areas of software development, but considering the many tools and languages to be combined in web development, it is likely also the most complicated.

Why ChatGPT is Not the Tech Genie You Thought it Was

I had the opportunity to interview Allison Sturges, the Head of Marketing at . Genies allow creators to design and create their own avatar ecosystem. An avatar ecosystem consists of avatars, fashion and collectibles, spaces and venues, and social experiences. Genies They are a web3 company, and its digital assets are NFTs minted on the Flow blockchain. Below is an edited transcript of the interview. To start, I love to hear about how you got started with Genies, what you were doing before, and what got you excited about this space. I'm part of the founding team at Genies. Currently, I’m the Head of Marketing. I've actually been with the company since I think my sophomore of junior year of college. I actually went to high school with Akash, our CEO. We didn't really know each other that well in high school. I heard through the grapevine that he was starting a company. At the time, it wasn't even called Genies. We were working on a different social consumer app. I ran into Akash at our local gym. So I walked up to him and was like, "Hey, would love to work for you as an intern this summer. Do you have any open roles available?" And he put me through a full resume interview process. They told me they were interviewing hundreds of people, but I swear I was probably the only one they were interviewing. Over the years, we worked on a couple of different social apps. Some of them were around photo sharing, video sharing, even got into the chatbot space for a bit. And then we landed on the avatar space around 2016. Can you talk more about what led to the transition of the work from the previous company into Genies? What was it that you saw with the avatar systems and the tools that made you guys think, "Ok this might be it"? We've always been obsessed with the next form of communication or social interaction in digital form. We were working on different social consumer apps at the time. We pivoted a few different times as we were iterating, failed fast, and kept iterating and learning from that. Over the years, that provided us a lot of learnings to get us to where we are today. At the time, the only social avatar was Bitmoji and people used to say we were the better Bitmoji. We got into the avatar space around 2016. Other than that, people knew avatars from a gaming lends, like Sims back in the day but there wasn’t many that were used as a kind of social communication. We saw avatars as a tool for communication and really a tool for self-expression. Our philosophy behind avatars is that it can be a representation of your truest, most authentic self, kind of like your inner emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that maybe you don't feel comfortable expression in the physical world. As a result, we spent a good amount of time perfecting how our avatars look and I believe we have the best-looking avatar on the market. Can you elaborate more on the avatar space for people like myself that's aren't familiar with it? There's definitely a lot of players out there that are looking towards the avatar space or trying to build an avatar world. You have companies like Zepetto, or you could even say Roblox, where that is a form of self-expression. You're able to create that identity layer and use that within those kind of gaming type experiences. With Genies, we're focused on the aesthetics of the avatars. We've really studied Gen Z to understand what they care about, how they want to express themselves, and what kind of tools they might want to use to create that kind of identity. With the Genies Studio app, that is our first experience in providing the ability for people to create their own avatars, but then also providing tools that allow them to customize and create whatever they want in our ecosystem. Fashion is really interesting when you look at Gen Z and culture. They grew up on the internet. They have access to everything. They want to be unique and be able to stand out. Fashion is really interesting when you look at Gen Z and culture. They grew up on the internet. They have access to everything. They want to be unique and be able to stand out. And so fashion has been a form of that self-expression that you see in the physical world. In our tool, we let creators design their own patterns or textures to use on their assets. Eventually, creators will be able to upload their own patterns and creations. We even have kind of like cropping or stitching type tools where you could take this shirt here and take the sleeves off and combine it with another shirt. And creators will be able to sell, trade, or thrift them within our ecosystem. Can you walk us through how the technology works? We're an avatar tools company. In the app currently, you're able to design and create your own avatar. We'll be rolling out more customizations where you can change your body type, create your own makeup, and even tattoos. In the coming months, we'll be rolling out more tools that will allow you to create your own looks, spaces, and experiences. And then once we roll out the developer kit, you'll be able to create your own avatar ecosystem as well. What kind of features do the creators want in an avatar tools company? Right now, we have a big focus on the uniqueness and customization of the avatar itself as well as creating and designing your own fashion. When we rolled out our limited beta, that was the kind of feedback we were getting from our users. We're even exploring things where the avatar doesn't necessarily have to be human. It can be an animal or it can be a teacup with floating arms. These things get really playful and expressive and allow people to innovate on that identity. And as we look towards the developer community and the experience side of things, the tools will be more around how you can have your avatar interact with others around you. Maybe it would involve motion capture or embodiment. Or maybe take an object in the real world and turn it into a 3D object. Do you find that Gen Z are open to NFTs, or are they against it? I think there's kind of mixed feelings on NFTs. When NFTs got their boom, it was all around digital artwork. That and NBA Top Shot is really what accelerated the NFT space. And that is a great use case for what the power of NFTs can do. Digital artists have never had a way to monetize their digital artwork and NFTs provided a way for them to do so the same way that physical artists have been able to. I would say over the next year or two, people will start to be more educated on the power of NFTs. But I think there's still a lot of work to do around the branding of the technology. For us, we really view NFTs as a great empowerment tool for creators. We're seeing creators leave platforms like Instagram because they're not getting paid for their creations. They don't own them. With a platform like ours and us announcing full ownership, all of our creators and users have that full ownership, that full access. In your opinion, what makes someone feel like they have true ownership? It's the ability to trade it, to control it, sell it, or thrift it. It's being able to exchange that asset. It's also about attributing it back to the original owner. I can fully create an outfit or shirt in the Genies ecosystem. Now when I sell that to you, it's always going to be attributed back to me as that original owner and creator. Over time, maybe that asset gets traded to someone else. So monetarily, that attribution gives you the split in the future as well. Lastly, what do you envision where Genies the company will be in five years? In five years, assuming all goes well and we continue to stay on track, we definitely envision hundreds, thousands of creators, artists, and developers being able to build their own avatar ecosystems that the mainstream users adopt. It starts to get really exciting when you think about how Apple first rolled out the app store and now they have millions of apps on the app store. Crowd Genie is a peer-to-peer online lending platform in Singapore which is looking to enhance its business loan service provision by embracing the blockchain innovation. The company’s vision is to radicalize the existing funds lending and borrowing framework so as to make it more efficient and worthwhile for all parties involved. To this end, the platform has scheduled an ICO aimed at raising $35 million to enhance the platform and scale operations to reach the global market. Market Problems The alternative financial market space is one of the fastest growing globally, particularly in the emerging Asia-Pacific region. Most of this growth can be attributed to a market gap, whereby legacy financial institutions are unable to meet borrowers’ and lenders’ demands satisfactorily. At the same time, technological advancements are gradually streamlining the capital allocation process but most existing institutions have not managed to keep pace with such innovations. Therefore, most small business entities end up having very limited access to funding options. And even when they do, the existence of third-party intermediaries makes it extremely costly. Lenders also lack a credible system of customer identification and authentication. The Crowd Genie Solution Crowd Genie is a significant player within this space, going beyond the obvious to meet the needs of all key players in this crucial market. This peer-to-peer lending platform has more than 18 months of experience in the financial market. It is also one of the four licensed securities platforms in Singapore. The platform is now geared to move to the next level by incorporating blockchain technology into its operational system. Unique Highlights of Crowd Genie GenieShield Crowd Genie is the first platform in Singapore, and possibly South-East Asia, to launch a provision fund. This fund, known as GenieShield, is a protective feature for lenders who use the platform. It uses a ring-fenced fund to achieve this by advancing funds to lenders in the case of payment defaults or delays. This buffers the risk involved in becoming a lender and makes potential investors more likely to take advantage of the model. Digital Passport The Crowd Genie platform is planning to build a digital identity verification system for every user of the platform. This “digital passport” will formulate the gateway into the platform and will be put on the immutable blockchain so as to prevent tampering and manipulation of existing data and also ease the verification process. The system will seek to pass existing regulatory compliance tests guaranteeing a similar level of diligence from the system as is expected of traditional financial institutions. Blockchain Listing for Unique Asset Classes The use of ERC-20 tokens in the Crowd Genie system will allow the fractionalization of any asset, making it easier for individuals to diversify and manage risks. Using blockchain technology and the smart contract feature, it will be possible to tokenize new asset groups that are currently inaccessible. Such assets will include buildings, fleets of cars and even commodities. Tokenization will mean that all of these and many more can be traded on asset exchanges. This will increase liquidity, improve price discovery and also lead to wider asset distribution. Additional Security Features Crowd Genie makes use of an Artificial Intelligence engine to assess the viability of every borrower.
