HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your background. I’m Co-founder and CEO of DoxyChain and winner of the Forbes 25 under 25 award. I’m member of the Global Shapers Community, an initiative of the World Economic Forum. Previously, I worked for the Warsaw Stock Exchange in the WSE Private Market project - a market for tokenization of assets using blockchain technology. Also took part in several deep tech projects in Poland and Singapore, among others. I’m also member of the former working group in the Polish Ministry of Digitalisation on DLT and blockchain. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? DoxyChain. It is a next-generation blockchain document management software (DMS). Powered by its own blockchain, DoxyChain is an innovation that combines electronic signature, workflows optimization, and enhanced security, which means we are the very first user-oriented holistic digital solution. We democratize blockchain and set new standards for digital documents space. What is the origin story? DoxyChain idea emerged during the GlobalLegal Hackathon held in Warsaw Google Campus at the beginning of 2019, where the four future co-founders Gabriel Dymowski, Piotr Żelazko, Marcin Lorenc, and Daniel Bigs, received the award for their "Blockchain Power-of-Attorney" project. After that competition,, the team received multiple inquiries and questions about the solution's functionalities and availability. That became an indicator of the market trust for a blockchain-based solutions. Yet before the entity was set up in September 2019, the team ran various business, legal, tech checkups to explore the market pain points, opportunities, risks and shape the revolutionary platform. Verified by the Covid-19 pandemic, the market needs happen to be way wider than just a PoA, which made the team start working on the app for all the documents (including various contracts), digitization, and management. After several MVP implementations and assumptions checks, DoxyChain launched their platform in Q2 2021 in Poland as B2B SaaS, also addressing the needs of enterprise clients with a dedicated offer for them. #What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Some of the core founders know each other for more than 7 years. We share a passion for technology and disruptive solutions. We are not afraid to be different, and we are not afraid to be judged for our revolutionary ideas. The experiences of every team member complement each other. We have a talented lawyer, 2 blockchain geniuses, and a business growth hacker. We communicate openly, know our strong and weak spots, listen to the more experienced advisors, and learn every day. If we weren't building the DoxyChain startup, we would be building another tech-related project. All of us have a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Analytical and critical thinking help me spot the pain points and come up with ways to resolve those. All of us would be connected to the blockchain market one way or another. #At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? Basically, we have just launched. The 3 main metrics crucial for us are the number of users, market awareness about DoxyChain, and partnerships/network. What's most exciting about your traction to date? It took us a while to test the platform before going public with SaaS. However, we already have 25+ paying SMEs. Besides, our resell partners are what we are most excited about: Wolters Kluwer Poland and Oracle for Startups among them. What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? Mostly I am excited about blockchain since I have been in that market for a while now. Obviously, every technology has pros and cons. The question is what the balance is. I personally took part in a debate, "Does blockchain bring more harm than good?" and although the end result was "No," I listened to several good arguments about DLT cons. There are risks. Designing Fair and Efficient Blockchain Games: Conclusion and References

Oracles provide a secure and reliable way for smart contracts to access real-time market data, which is essential for various DeFi applications. API3 has developed an oracle node that is operated by the API Provider, removing the intermediary node layer, or middleman. This change in oracle architecture creates a scalable and transparent solution that enables first-party oracles to be aggregated according to user requirements. DeFi protocols looking to utilize first-party oracles do so by integrating dAPIs to their smart contracts. With developers in mind, dAPIs have been designed with a simple integration process that abstracts away the technical implementation of accessing data feeds. The API3 Market provides the ability to manage these data feeds while giving users access to a range of first-party data feeds. In the future, additional data feed services, such as capturing (OEV) will be accessible once a dAPI has been integrated. Well, that’s exactly how I felt when I discovered that the liquidity and TVL (Total Value Locked) figures displayed on the Uniswap V3 user interface were completely wrong. Uniswap is the biggest decentralized finance (DeFi) project on Ethereum and the whole blockchain industry. Thousands of liquidity providers use these figures daily to build their investing strategies. So how could these figures possibly be inaccurate? I have spent hours trying to find a mistake in my calculations, and guess what? I didn’t make any mistakes. And the situation is even worse than just inaccurate TVL. But let’s go step by step and start with the problem. The Problem Firstly, what is TVL, and how is it used? In short, TVL is defined as a dollar value of all crypto assets currently delegated by users to a blockchain or protocol. For example, these assets may be the total liquidity of a decentralized exchange, bridge or lending protocol, or total staked assets of PoS blockchain. Crypto market investors and other participants use TVL for multiple cases: Assessment of the protocol health. This is why popular protocols boast their TVL on the main page. Bigger TVL = more user trust = lower risk =stable profit. Comparison between protocols. If I were a crypto trader I’d prefer to use DeFi tools, like decentralized exchanges or bridges, with higher TVL. Measurement of protocol growth. Investors who see that a protocol or project’s TVL is rapidly growing consider it a signal to be bullish about the protocol’s token price. Looks like it’s important to know TVL numbers, right? accurate But what if I say that the most available data about Uniswap v3 TVL is misleading? The biggest surprise for me, though, was that the official is also a problem! Here’s how I figured it out. Uniswap Chart App I was working on a liquidity analytics project, comparing official data on Uniswap v3 with my calculations using raw blockchain data. This step is vital to comply with the highest data quality standards. To begin verification, I chose a popular liquidity pool, USDC-WETH (0,3% fee level). Look at pool 3 on Uniswap v3 — it has an impressive TVL of $333m (based on Uniswap official charts at the time of writing) and a healthy daily volume of $61m. Immediately I ran into a problem: my calculated TVL value was $176m instead of the $333m reported on the Uniswap website. Ok, so bugs happen. But before jumping to debugging, I decided to verify the TVL on the most popular Ethereum blockchain explorer, . Etherscan Technically, each Uniswap v3 pool is a smart contract. So, the blockchain explorer can show the token balances in the pool’s possession, which is what TVL is. I expected the token balance of the pool to be a bit larger than the TVL reported by Uniswap. That’s because the pool holds liquidity as well as fees that have been accrued but not yet claimed. But this balance was almost half the amount Uniswap reported, and, surprisingly, it was the same figure as my calculations! Comparing the liquidity, asset by asset, also showed a huge difference. At this point, I realized the error had nothing to do with my math skills. But how could this happen? After researching, I found that Uniswap relies on the decentralized blockchain indexing service . The Graph With this service, any developer can add a personal analytics code (called subgraph) for specific blockchain data use cases and make the analytics available through API. Uniswap Labs has created its own subgraphs for Uniswap protocol analytics and made them available through . The good thing is that its code is . The bad thing, though, is its TVL calculation errors. The Graph Hosted Service publicly available A brief analysis of the code shows that it accounts for all swaps and liquidity events but doesn’t account for fees. Uniswap pools have a 0.01% to 1% fee on every swap. This fee is deducted from traded assets and accrued to liquidity providers. In turn, liquidity providers can collect accrued fees at any time. The current Uniswap v3 subgraph, though, displays the figures as if no fees were ever accrued and collected. So, the Uniswap v3 TVL figures deviated from reality with each swap. You may wonder: “Did you submit an issue ticket on GitHub before writing this article?” Yes, that’s my first intention after discovering the error. And you know what? That issue is , created by a core developer in November 2021! already logged So why wasn’t this problem fixed? I have no idea. Maybe the error was negligible at the time this bug was discovered. However, this is a cumulative error that grows with each swap. So, as the fee and trading volume in the pool grow, the resulting TVL discrepancy from the error will result in a larger difference from reality. And we can see that in a big pool like USDC-ETH with a larger 0.3% fee — it’s become out of control! It’s currently almost double the true figures. Let’s Verify Total TVL Ok, we know by now that the TVL numbers in individual pools are distorted. We’ll explore how this can affect investment decisions below. But before we get to that, let’s see how these errors affect the total TVL of Uniswap v3’s protocol. This TVL is reported at almost $12b at the time of writing. You don’t have to be a data scientist to see something is wrong here. We can see above that TVL was reported as slowly but steadily growing from $500m to $4.5b on March 6th, 2022. Then something crazy happened, and TVL was reported as $254b on March 7th, 2022. That’s 2,5x more than the highest TVL of the whole Ethereum network ever — in ONE day! Clearly, it’s a mistake in the data. In the following weeks, the TVL was reported as $10–20b. At this point, I lost all trust in Uniswap analytics data. But how can we know the true TVL? I had 2 options. — fork out and fix the Uniswap v3 subgraph. The bad thing about this option is that it would take days for the subgraph to reindex. And I’m not a fan of the GraphQL language The Graph uses. Option 1 Luckily, I had — — ’s high-performance analytical databases for all Uniswap v3 and Ethereum data, readily available for complex online queries. Option 2 Datamint After some experiments, I’ve created the following algorithm for accurate TVL calculation. Check the step-by-step process below. Calculate TVL for all existing Uniswap v3 pools using these two steps. Add all ERC-20 token transfers to and from the pool contract (this includes all unclaimed fees) and match the token balances on Etherscan Add all liquidity events, incoming and outgoing, then add all swap events to account for fees Compare the two methods and ensure no unexplained discrepancies remain Remove abandoned and empty pools with less than 50 swaps or 0.00000000000001 token amount (with 7,863 pools detected (including 2,083 pairs with stables), my algorithm removed 112 pools as empty/abandoned) 6. Find a path to stable coins for each token to convert pool TVL to USD value 7. Remove low liquidity pools with broken USD values since some pools can show inadequate values after completely removing liquidity (check the below chart as an example) 8. Convert TVL of all remaining pairs to USD value and add them After multiple cross-checks, I came up with a TVL calculation. I started it and wanted to get coffee while the calculation was executed, but it finished before I stood up. This is the only downside to using a high-performance analytical database. Are you ready to see the result? It’s almost than the reported $ It’s up to you to draw a conclusion. 4 times less 11,8b… *: My calculation may contain errors. In data projects for enterprise clients, we use documented methodology, autotests, and many other tools to achieve the highest data quality. These tools would be an overkill for a personal research project like this. This research highlights the obvious problems in available data rather than providing a final solution.* Disclaimer Ok, We’ll Fix TVL Calculations — Will It Help? The problem isn’t incorrect numbers but rather the decisions we make based on those numbers. For example, most profit calculators for liquidity providers use these numbers for predictions. However, it isn’t that difficult to fix the TVL calculation. Either Uniswap Labs fixes it in their subgraph code, or calculator developers start using other data sources. The core question is whether we can be confident that calculator predictions are correct. I did some calculations, and the short answer is — . not even close A bold claim, I know. Many liquidity providers use existing calculators which affect decisions that cost tens of millions of dollars. But let’s go through the calculation steps so you can make your own judgment. First, let’s review some core concepts of the Uniswap v3 protocol. One of its main innovations is concentrated liquidity. In essence, with Uniswap v3, you can select the price range you want your money to work as a liquidity provider. This is an amazing concept that can bring great value to protocol users. Liquidity providers limit their exposure to impermanent loss, and traders can enjoy smaller price slippage when volatility is low. But all these — . potential benefits come at a cost complexity So, we want to understand how the earnings of the Uniswap v3 liquidity provider are calculated. In Uniswap v3, the liquidity provider selects the price range to provide liquidity to. He’ll get his cut of the swap fees once the price is inside this range. At first glance, a liquidity provider wants to have the price range of his liquidity position as wide as possible. However, the liquidity is distributed proportionally over this range. So, the wider the range, the lower the swap fee is for each deal. In this example, option A shows the liquidity provider choosing a wider price range, and option 2 shows a narrower one with the same amount. Provided that, in both cases, the price is inside the chosen price range, the liquidity provider gets 3x more fees in option B. However, if the price is more volatile, the liquidity provider might end up with a higher profit in option A. So, in reality, selecting the right price range relies on finding the best balance between the risk of missing the price and receiving a lower return on each deal. One more parameter influences the profit of the liquidity provider and is often overlooked. I’m not aware of any LP profit calculator that considers it, and this parameter can change everything. You’re wondering what this is by now. It’s the distribution of the LPs. Consider the following example: In this example, two liquidity providers (LP1 and LP2) have positions. LP1 has a narrow position of $3. LP2 has a wide position of $5. In this case, if the price doesn’t leave the range of LP1’s position, he will get 3x more fees than LP2. That’s because LP2 has only $1 in this range. And this $1 is competing with $3 of LP1. If you look at the liquidity distribution of any Uniswap v3 pool, you’ll see it’s not uniform. The higher the bar, the higher the competition. Liquidity providers need to find the balance between choosing competitive ranges and the range with a lower probability of a price hit. That’s why this distribution plays a big role in LP profit prediction and strategy building. The only problem is… I’m not sure this distribution is calculated properly. As if That’s Is Not Enough — Liquidity Snipers Being a liquidity provider is about guessing the price, competition state, and trade volume. If an LP had a wish, it would be to know the future of the trades to adjust liquidity positions beforehand. But what if I tell you it’s possible? While researching, some unusual liquidity providers caught my attention. They added and removed significant liquidity positions (over $10m) many times a day. Even more surprising, they always added and removed liquidity in the same block. Let’s look at an example: We have three transactions, all in block 15413416, positions 3–5, executed in bottom-up order. The first transaction, with the Execute method, is a contract named “MEV Bot,” adding $22m of liquidity to the USDC-WETH pool. The second transaction is a swap from USDC to DogeChain through WETH. This is an ordinary swap with a value of approximately $16,500. Standard swap transaction The third transaction is “MEV Bot” again, removing $22m liquidity from the USDC-WETH pool. What happened in the example is called “ ”. Let me explain how this worked: liquidity sniping Somebody sent a transaction to swap USDC to DogeChain MEV Bot detected this transaction in the mempool and activated a private link with a mining pool using Flashbots technology or something similar MEV Bot paid miners to include a swap transaction and two transactions in a specific order that allowed value extraction MEV Bot added so much liquidity ($22m) to a very narrow price range, so effectively, all the fee profits from that specific USDC-DogeChain trade were accrued to him MEV Bot then removed the liquidity and earned fees (about $35) So, his gross profit after gas fees was around $30. Not very much? Yes, but he executes this strategy multiple times a minute, which all adds up. You can . check it out yourself What does this mean for you as a liquidity provider? It means liquidity snipers could take a significant cut of your fee profits. Conclusion Please don’t get me wrong. I truly believe that Uniswap is a great project with huge potential. I also respect the idea of concentrated liquidity in the core of Uniswap v3. However, what I have found out is that an analytics part of the Uniswap ecosystem is far from maturity. I am confident that this will change soon! Let me wrap up my research findings: TVL figures in Uniswap v3 Charts are grossly inaccurate. The same errors exist in all analytical tools relying on the official Uniswap v3 subgraph. Total Uniswap v3 TVL is $3,14b vs $11,8b reported by the official website (at the time of writing). Calculators for Uniswap v3 liquidity providers have little value for real-life strategies because they don’t account for competition and liquidity snipers. Luckily, you can now better understand how Uniswap v3 liquidity pools work in real life and can adjust your research accordingly. I’m not in a position to give financial advice, but I see only 2 options to build a prominent liquidity-providing strategy: . Use historical performance data. If you’re ‘in the team’ and have a list of apps, just give it to me man. Why do you have to INFORM THE TEAM that I’m offering you a deal?? Abstract The Turtle Trading System is a classic, comprehensive and long-lasting trading system, one that has influenced countless of investors 40 years after its invention. The system includes many classic concepts such as trend spotting, position sizing, risk adjustments and stops/exists, and has helped investors to become better traders and win them sizable investment returns in their careers. Cryptocurrency is the next emerging market after financial derivatives such as options and futures; as the development of Blockchain technology continues, this asset class will certainly draw attention from more investors in days to come. This article applies the traditional Turtle Trading system to Cryptocurrency trading. By using quantitative trading strategy to backtest the performance of turtle trading system in BTC market, this report thoroughly evaluates the effectiveness of this classic in a brand new field. Full Report 1. Background of the Turtle Trading System The Turtle Trading System originates from a famous dispute in 1983. Famous commodities speculator Richard Dennis had an ongoing dispute with his long-time friend Bill Eckhardt about whether great traders were a god-given talent; Richard believed that he could teach people to become great traders, while Bill thought that genetics and aptitude were the determining factors. In order to settle the dispute, Richard suggested that they recruit and train some traders before letting them trade on actual accounts. Since Richard was a famous trader at the time, he received submissions from over 1000 applicants. In the end, Richard recruited 13 volunteers to proceed with his experiment, including 10 novice traders and 3 friends that Richard already knew. The group of 13 people were invited to Chicago and trained for two weeks at the end of December 1983, and began trading with small accounts at the beginning of January 1984. After the training period ends, Richard funded most of them with $500,000 to $2,000,000 accounts at the start of February, and the students were referred to as the “turtles”. It later become one of the most famous experiments in trading history because after four years, these “turtles” achieved an average annual compound ROI of 80% with their given accounts. As such, Richard successfully proved that, with sufficient training, ordinary people with no prior trading experience could also become excellent traders. Several years later, some of the successful “turtles” decided to publish the turtle trading rules, which subsequently benefited numerous of investors around the world. The Turtle Trading System is essentially a comprehensive trading system that covered five most important aspects of investment: Markets — What to buy or sell; Position Sizing — How much to buy or sell; Entries — When to buy or sell; Exits: — When to get out of a winning position; Stops — When to get out of a losing position. In short, the Turtle Trading System bears three distinguishable features: It is a comprehensive trading system that covers every aspect of trading; Traders simply follow the instructions without making any subjective judgments. Due to its proved profitability, traders rarely doubts the authenticity of the rules, even in losing positions To a certain extent, the success of Turtle Trading System could be attributed to its simple and automatic nature, since these two characteristics leave traders no room for subjective thinking. In the words of Curtis Faith, the author of , “Most successful traders use a mechanical trading system. This is no coincidence. A good mechanical trading system automates the entire process of trading and provides specific instructions for traders. The system consistently makes it easier for a trader to trade because of the set of rules that specifically outlines what should be done in every situation. As such, the mechanics of trading are not left up to the judgment of the trader.” Original Turtle Trading Rules The success of the Turtle Trading System also reveals that, the confidence, consistency, and discipline offered by a thoroughly tested mechanical system are the “secret” to many traders’ success. Everyone with the confidence and the discipline to consistently apply the effective rules they were given can also become successful traders. As Richard Dennis, the father of the the Turtle Trading System once said, “I always say that you could publish my trading rules in the newspaper and no one would follow them. The key is consistency and discipline. Almost anybody can make up a list of rules that are 80% as good as what we taught our people. What they couldn’t do is give them the confidence to stick to those rules even when things are going bad.” 2. Comprehensive Guide to Turtle Trading System Now, we will carefully analyze the Turtle Trading system based on its answers for the six questions listed below. Markets — What to buy or sell? The Turtles only trade the most liquid markets. Higher liquidity leads to a favorable market depth, which can decrease trading risks and thus potential unwanted losses. Applying this rule to Cryptocurrency assets, this means that traders should focus on mainstream Cryptocurrency assets if they want to apply the Turtle Trading rules to their trading strategies. Position Sizing — How much to buy or sell? Volatility The Turtle Trading system automatically adjusts the position size based on the Market Dollar Volatility, which measure the absolute volatility in dollar terms (when compared to positions in other markets)irrespective of the underlying volatility of the particular market. Here we use N ATR to represent the 20-day exponential moving average of the True Range. or Since this formula requires a previous day’s N value, you must start with a 20-day simple average of the True Range for the initial calculation. Position Sizing The turtles build positions in pieces which we called Units. Units are sized based on volatility so that each N represents 1% of the account equity. Thus, a unit for a given market or commodity can be calculated as: Since the Turtles use the Unit as the base measure for position size, and since those units are volatility risk adjusted, the Unit is a measure of both the risk of a position, and of the entire portfolio of positions. There are also risk management rules that limited the number of Units on four different levels: Single Market (Maximum Units: 4); Closely Correlated Markets (Maximum Units: 6); Loosely Correlated Markets (Maximum Units: 10); Single Direction — Long or Short (Maximum Units: 12). In the Cryptocurrency market, traders applying the Turtle Trading rules can use correlation coefficient to determine the price correlation between Cryptocurrency assets. Tactics — How to buy or sell? The Turtles strictly follow trade signals. As a mechanical trading system based on trend-observation, the Turtle Trading rule believes in “Buying Strength & Selling Weakness”. Moreover, in order to avoid unsystematic risk, the Turtles diversify investments and spread risk across different instruments. Additionally, they change instruments once in a while and when price changes, they also change investment instruments. The Turtles avoids subjective trades by following the systematic strategies, therefore they are told to strictly execute every single trading rule under all conditions, regardless of wins or losses. Entries—When to buy or sell? The Turtles use a very simple entry system based on the Channel Breakout systems taught by Richard Donchain. The Turtles are given rules for two different but related systems we called System 1 and System 2, whereas System 1 is a shorter-term system based on 20-day breakout, while System 2 is a long term system based on a 55-day breakout. Investors are given full discretion to allocate as much as of their equity to either system at will. A breakout is defined as the price exceeding the high or low of a particular number of days; Thus a 20-day breakout would be defined as exceeding the high or low of the preceding 20 days. System 1: Turtles enter positions when the price exceeds by a single tick the high or low of the preceding 20 days. If the price exceeds the 20-day high, then the Turtles would buy one Unit to initiate a long position. If the price drops one tick below the low of the last 20-days, the Turtles would sell one Unit to initiate a short position. System 1 breakout entry signals are ignored if the last breakout results in a winning trade. (A winning trade does not represent a real profit; it also includes a breakout ignored by 2 yet discovered to be profitable later.) System 2: Turtles enter positions when the price exceeds by a single tick the high or low of the preceding 55 days. If the price exceeds the 55-day high, then the Turtles will buy one Unit to initiate a long position. If the price drops one tick below the low of the last 55 days, the Turtles will sell one Unit to initiate a short position. Adding Units: Turtles enter single Unit long positions at the breakouts and add to those positions at ½ N intervals following their initial entry. This ½ N interval is based on the actual fill price of the previous order. So if an initial breakout order slips by ½ N, then the new order will be 1 full N past the breakout to account for the ½ N slippage, plus the normal ½ N unit add interval. The will continue right up to the maximum permitted number of units. Exits — When to get out of a winning position? The Turtles follow a very simple exit strategy. The System 1 exit is a 10-day low for long positions and a 10-day high for short positions; All the Units in the position will be exited if the price goes against the position for a 10-day breakout. The System 2 exit is a 20-day low for long positions and a 20-day high for short positions; All the Units in the position will be exited if the price goes against the position for a 20-day breakout. Stops — When to get out of a losing position? The Turtles place their stops based on position risk. No trade can incur more than 2% risk. Since 1 N of price movement represents 1% of Account Equity, the maximum stop that will allow 2% risk will be 2 N of price movement. Turtle stops are set at 2 N below the entry for long positions, and 2 N above the entry for short positions. In order to keep total position risk at a minimum, if additional units are added, the stops for earlier units are raised by ½ N. This generally means that all the stops for the entire position will be placed at 2 N from the most recently added unit. Since the Turtle’s stops are based on N, they adjust to the volatility of the markets. More volatile markets will have wider stops, but they will also have fewer contracts per Unit, This equalizes the risk across all entries and results in better diversification and a more robust risk management. 3. Backtesting Turtle Trading System In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Turtle Trading system as described above, we used Catalyst, an open-source project, as the instrument for backtesting, and used minute trading data on Bitfinex from June 30th 2017 to June 30th 2018, in which BTC price experienced a full Bull-to-Bear cycle. Since BTC volatility is significantly higher than commodity futures and stocks, and since BTC is traded 24/7, we believe that one year of trading data is sufficient for backtesting. Backtesting Model We separate the backtesting model into four separate scenarios (by System 1/2 and by long/short positions). The four scenarios are described as follows: System 1 (Long + Short) System 1 (Long Only) System 2 (Long + Short) System 2 (Long Only) The result of our backtesting model is shown in figures below. Each figure contains four sub-figures, in which the first figure represents daily portfolio value in USD, the second figure represents BTC price trend in the given time range, the third figure represents daily profit percentage of current strategy and the fourth figure represent daily cash value (negative value represents leveraging). Scenario 1: System 1 (Long + Short) Scenario 2: System 1 (Long Only) Scenario 3: System 2 (Long + Short) Scenario 4: System 2 (Long Only) Assessment As a result, System 1 underperformed BTC price during the backtest period, while System 2 outperformed BTC price during the backtest period. Based on the backtest results, it seems like simply following the Turtle Trading system does not yield significant profits, and that System 2 yields more profits than System 1. Under System 2, Turtles traded less frequently, thus having less stop-losses and an extremely low chance of entering a position during a downtrend. What’s more, based on the backtesting result, we can see that shorting is probably not a great idea in Cryptocurrency market. Under the Turtle Trading rules, shorting does not benefit much and frequent stop-losses during a bull run leads to capital loss. In essence, the Turtle Trading system is a trend-following strategy. As the backtest result shows, this system requires further optimization before it could be applied to Cryptocurrency trading. What’s more, although the original Turtle Trading system is intended for trading loosely correlated markets, the correlation in price between different Cryptocurrency assets are rather high — making it even harder to apply this system to the Cryptocurrency market. In order to further optimize the performance of the Turtle Trading system in the Cryptocurrency market, We suggest the following adjustments: Use Moving Average (MA) channel as entries and exits Experiment with other time frequencies; such as 30 min, 2hr, 4hr and 6hr of trading data. Experiment with different stop placements in System 1, such as setting stop at 3N (or more) below the entry for long positions and above the entry for short positions. the baseline to 3 N or more. Experiment with different allocation of equity to System 1 and 2, for example: 40 % in system 1 and 60% in system 2. We will continue to share the backtest result of proposed optimization in our future reports. 4. Conclusion Based on the backtesting result of applying Turtle Trading system to BTC trading, we conclude that, despite its extraordinary performance in the traditional market, the Turtle Trading system does not yield a significant profit in the Cryptocurrency market. This is possibly due to the following reasons: High correlation in price of the Cryptocurrency market strongly affects risk distribution; Discrepancy in a Bull-to-Bear cycle between Cryptocurrency and other traditional asset so that the Donchian channel can no longer serve as an effective indicator in the Cryptocurrency market; The trading signals in the Turtle Trading System are well known by traders, thus reducing its effectiveness.
