We discuss the hardware and software specifications and how Double telepresence robots could change the world. Marc DeVidts (left) and David Cann (right) For our readers that aren’t familiar with Double Robotics, could you briefly explain your product, Double 3, and its use cases? Limarc: Double 3 is a two-wheeled, self-balancing robot that has a screen, cameras, microphones, and a speaker. The goal of the Double 3 is to help telecommuters and distance learners be closer to their teams and classrooms. Many of our customers are employees who work with a team but live somewhere else, or K-12 students who are homebound due to illness, but can still benefit from the social interaction in a classroom setting. Site managers can visit multiple locations in a matter of minutes without traveling. Doctors can quickly visit their patients across multiple hospitals to provide better care and follow-up. We have even seen couples who let distant family members attend their wedding via Double! Marc: How do people pilot or control the Double 3? Could you briefly go over some of the hardware and software specifications? L: Double 3’s new Click-to-Drive interface lets the driver simply click anywhere on the floor and the robot will drive there, avoiding obstacles along the way.  The robot senses its environment and presents a stream to the driver, with 3D virtual objects placed into the live video stream as if they are in the environment, to indicate drivable areas and points of interest, such as the charging dock. Marc: mixed-reality video What was your inspiration for the product and for starting Double Robotics? L: For a few years before starting Double, I worked remotely as an iOS app developer for various clients. I was always searching for ways to better connect with my team, but all of the other solutions out there were either super expensive or clunky. When the iPad 2 was released with a front-facing camera, Marc and I realized our combined software and hardware experience could enable us to make a simple, elegant robot that leveraged the iPad for video. Since then, we’ve shipped over 11,000 units, and we’ve built a following of extremely passionate customers.  Double 3 is our first new hardware release since 2016, and we’ve moved away from the iPad to custom hardware that provides a much better user experience and extensibility for the future. David: From an investor’s point of view, why should people be excited about the Double 3? Are there any gaps in the market that your product fills? L: We have thousands of passionate customers who have provided extensive feedback on the last two iterations of Double. Double 3 is based on all of that feedback, creating an awesome user experience that makes telepresence accessible to many more people. Remote work is becoming commonplace, both in who it’s available to and how often they’re able to work remotely. David: “The future of work is remote, and the Double 3 is the best way to work remotely.” Do you have any future plans for the Double 3 and is there a way for users to customize the Double 3 for their unique applications? L: The hardware inside Double 3 allows a lot of room for expandability in the future. Future software updates will include more autonomous features, like full-building mapping and navigation. We are also announcing a developer API, which will allow customers to write their own applications for Double. The API will allow customers to tap into the robot’s sensor data and autonomous features at various levels, so they don’t have to recreate the wheel, but they can also make powerful customizations. Marc: Where can people purchase Double and is it available worldwide? L: Double 3 is available to order now directly through , for $3999, and the first units will begin shipping toward the end of September. International customers can also order from one of our international partners, if we do not ship directly to their country. Marc: our website The best technology is tech that changes the way we work, the way we travel, or drastically improves our lifestyle in some way. How do believe Double will change the world? L: In recent years, we have already seen a drastic increase in the number of companies offering remote job positions.  Our goal is to help augment the remote worker’s experience by enabling them to be more present in spontaneous hallway conversations, not just in the meeting room. With the cost of housing increasing and cities becoming overcrowded, companies are struggling to find good talent. Double 3 allows companies to hire the best people for the job, and allows remote employees to feel like first-class citizens. David: With advanced development in robotics progressing year after year, new technology like the Double 3 will continue to innovate the way we work and improve aspects of our daily lives. Write a variety of content: news pieces, reviews, guides, opinion pieces, interviews 2. Get published on as many tech blogs/pubs as you can 3. Learn SEO and social media marketing/promotion 4. Constantly search for jobs via as many platforms as you can: LinkedIn, Glassdoor, local job boards, etc. 5. Apply and wait . I used to think finding jobs in writing is about knowing the right people, but it's not. It's about honing your craft, consistency, hard work, and constant searching. Luck comes to those who are prepared. I'd also recommend working on selling yourself and your skills well. Some writers can write but they can't talk about their value in an interview or even in a cover letter. Focus on accomplishments and numbers, not on your willingness to work hard. The dangers of deepfakes may have been a big deal in 2019 but maybe we will see advancements in 2021 that combat this threats. At my peak when I was writing full-time and managing 4 other freelance writing gigs on the side, optimizing your routine is paramount to maintaining a high output and a healthy lifestyle. One major thing that increased my output while maintaining quality was creating templates for every article I wrote and following that template every time I wrote a similar article. A lot of my articles did well because they followed simple structures that provided people with a good user experience and ticked all the write on-page SEO boxes that allowed them to rank well on Google. Once you get enough clients you could make a living freelancing alone, but that comes with a lot of headaches and requires you to manage yourself, your taxes, your invoices, etc. When I started, I was a full-time English teacher in Tokyo with 2-3 writing gigs on the side. If you want to find a stable writing job, you should build up a portfolio of articles in a niche you're interested in and then look for marketing content writing positions in that industry. Unsurprisingly (since we're having this discussion on Hacker Noon), tech is one where you'll see lots of money and good writers are in demand because writers bring in money. I remember when we got our first computer I made my own desktop folder with my name on it and I thought it was super cool. I would save dragon ball z GIFs to my folder and even saving words in notepad was mindblowing to me. That passion for media or tech transferred to video games when my father bought me a PlayStation 1 when I was 6 years old and the games I played there began to foster my love for stories. Interestingly, I think a huge defining moment for me was in second grade. The teacher gave us the assignment of writing a short story. We were 6 and 7 year olds, so I don't know what she was expecting. But I took the assignment seriously. I went to the library and rented 8 children's books to get ideas from. That's where I discovered plagiarism. I thought "This is a good story. Why don't I just write this story down and read this to the class?" So that's what I did. And after I read my story aloud, for the first time in my life I heard applause for something I'd written and my teacher said "I think we have a future writer on our hands!". But when I sat down at my desk I felt guilt, because I knew the story wasn't mine 😔. I made a silent vow to myself that the next time I read something aloud to the class, it would be something I'd written 21 years later....And here we are! Secondly, and more importantly, is the drive to tell an important story or the drive to share something you think is important. I can point to many stories that changed my life. Thus, I may be the best one to ask this question But journalism is typically news, op-eds, investigative pieces. Content writing could include those topics, but more. Like if I'm writing guides on "How to Set Up Your WordPress Account" I don't think I'd call that journalism. But I would call it content writing. Do you need to take journalism courses to be a good writer? No. But I'm sure they would make you a better writer. I took creative writing courses and wrote mostly fiction during my college life, but those courses still helped me become a content writer and improved my reading and writing abilities.
