A couple of days ago, I was talking with a designer friend about an HoloLens project I was finishing with a company. That was an exciting time, but the more we were talking, the more he was telling me that even if he had the opportunity to work with HoloLens, as a Product Designer, he wouldn’t know where to start.

The industry is falling over itself to make products ‘intelligent’ but what does that really mean to a user? As a Product Manager in this space, I’ve been thinking about intelligence and what it really means to users. There are many definitions of intelligence but they tend to be technical definitions of AI rather than intelligence seen through the eyes of a user. As we progress through the stages, what users once considered as intelligent, can become ordinary over time. For example, improving search so that it was accurate and fast could be regarded as highly intelligent at the time but now it’s the minimum we expect. As we move through technical advances in AI, the bar becomes ever higher. We now expect intelligence to transform our lives in a more drastic way than ever before.

My 7-year-old kid’s first interaction with computers was through voice. He asked Apple Siri to answer trivia like “Which is fastest car?”. When we bought Amazon Echo, my father commanded Alexa to sing old songs. Voice based Interactions are becoming ubiquitous in our daily lives. We can find them in smartphones like Apple Siri, voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and range of other products. It is clear voice-based interaction will soon replace graphical user interface. According to industry experts 30 % of interaction with devices will happen over voice in the next 2–3&nbsp;years.
