It’s now been 18 months since we started mabl with an effort to help make test automation easier for software teams around the world. As we’ve come this far, we’ve tried to , engaging them in our channel, with user surveys, and meeting them at conferences throughout the world. Lisa Crispin teams up with mabl to drive innovation in test automation

Baptiste is the CEO and co-founder of Crisp, an easy and effective way to chat with your website visitors. Davis Baer : What’s your background, and what are you working on? : My name is Baptiste Jamin, and I’m 24, and I’m CEO at Crisp. My passion for hacking things started when I was 5: My brother taught me how to boot our family’s Windows 3.1 computer using DOS. Then, when I was 12 I started coding by joining open source projects as a developer. We made indie video games, 2D games engines. At this time, Github didn’t exist and it’s crazy how we made projects as teenagers just by searching for knowledge on internet. This how my passion with entrepreneurship came. Baptiste Jamin Then, after being fired in High School because I hacked the network system, I joined a networking school. I also joined Orange the biggest ISP as a developer as a part-time job, did some freelancing, and joined few startups as a developer. During this time, I also did few side projects: Some succeeded, others failed. Later, I met Valerian, my now co-founder at Crisp. When I met him, he was working on an open source messaging solution using XMPP which was used by NATO and 60K users. On my end, I was working on trash mail system, which was popular in France also. From our previous side projects and startup experiences, we truly felt it was crucial to communicate with customers to succeed instartups, and at this time, most tools were outdated, complex and expensive for small companies. So we made it easy for startups and small companies to chat with their customers and to unify all their customer relationship in one place. They can add our chat on their website, manage all their customer email, Facebook Messenger queries, from our tool. Now, around 70K websites are using Crisp, around 60 million people are chatting every month on the platform. What went into building the initial product? In 2015, we kickstarted Crisp in three months in my cofounder’s flat in France. First, we designing the platform on Sketch, and then literally coded the platform in a few weeks, using a micro-service architecture and an AngularJS app. It was my first time ever working with this new co-founder. Then we started getting our first users. The fun story about this, is that a good friend of mine wanted wanted to try the platform, and it was password-locked. He asked me to remove the password lock. So I did. A day later, we discovered that around 20 users were using the product and were happy with it! This friend had been sent an angry email because they didn’t have any customer support chat, and they wanted to use Crisp to solve this. A bit later, one of those customers posted us on ProductHunt, and this is how our growth started. The first Crisp release. At this time the product was free, and I guess it helped to get an initial traction and to learn about the market. When you are free, customers are also a bit more tolerant about the lack of features on the product. Being free also forced us to optimize everything, because at this time we didn’t have any money. For instance I had to sell my car and few other things I had so I could focus on Crisp full-time. By optimizing, we had to optimize each dollar, and we coded internal tools like our own help-center, status page, financial tools. The funny thing is our customer loved those tools, and asked us to release these as products later. We also had to go really fast because the competition was also moving quickly, so we had to implement a ton of new features in a small amount of time. We were a really small team(two founders — developers), and thanks to all our previous experience we were able to move fast. We also chose to bootstrap instead of fundraise. Thanks to this decision, we are 100% independent. How have you attracted users and grown Crisp? After we got our first traction thanks to my friend and ProductHunt, we did a lot of growth hacking. We had to optimize our landing page and our app to convert visitors to long term users. For instance we discovered that when people implemented Crisp onto their website after signing up, 51% were still using the platform after 10 weeks. So we doubled down on how to make people install Crisp on their website. It was a big technical and UX challenge. What helped a lot as well, was the “Powered by Crisp” logo under our chatbox that amplified the growth as well. Finally, the most important advice to entrepreneurs is to focus on customers and customers support. This is the most important thing to grow. Thanks to customers, you will learn how to improve your product. What’s your business model, and how have you grown your revenue? As explained earlier, we started by being free. The free customers helped us to know what were the most imported paid features to build. A year after launching Crisp, we released Crisp 2.0 on ProductHunt with our new paid model with the new paid features (we still have a free plan). In a few days, we had a huge success. Crisp has a very international base, so we had to implement most of payment providers out there. This is why we are using both Stripe and PayPal as payment options. The key of our success is we adapted our pricing for startups, and we have a plan for each situation, from new startups to succeeding companies. What are your goals for the future? Currently we are working on a new release on Crisp that should be out there soon. The goal is to double our annual revenue and customers in the next few year. Personally, we will also start being sedentary again, after being nomads for so long. Crisp is still a small team (we are now 5), and bootstrapping our company allowed us to be nomads.Over the last few years, we moved to several different locations. Sometimes we are with each other, sometimes we are not. I also lived with my cofounder for several months. What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and obstacles you’ve overcome? If you had to start over, what would you do differently? The biggest challenge was clearing how to build a big platform in a small amount of time. If I started Crisp again, I wouldn’t change anything, even mistakes can lead to luck, and that’s what happened. Young entrepreneurs who are doing their first project don’t even realize how it helps to know nothing (yet) about the subject you are working on. Have you found anything particularly helpful or advantageous? We had some help and knowledge about The Family. I would say it’s the French YC, which we were a part of. It helped us to meet interesting people and to focus on growth. For instance, I didn’t even know what SaaS meant before meeting people from The Family. What’s your advice for entrepreneurs who are just starting out? The best advice is to work hard, and to build to the best of your abilities. I also think that young entrepreneurs should build side projects to get some experiences before building a startup. You can build really successful projects, that are not startups, but that could be in the future. “Jurassic Park” may not be as far-fetched as it seems. Scientists have been trying to find ways to bring extinct species back to life for some time now, and AI could finally make it happen. While some regulators call AI an extinction-level threat, the opposite may also be true. It could reverse extinction — perhaps not for dinosaurs, but feasibly for species like the woolly mammoth. Doing so could also play an important role in the fight against climate change. How De-Extinction Works De-extinction is the culmination of many cutting-edge technologies. It starts with gene-editing technologies like CRISPR, and AI helps throughout the entire process. Here’s a closer look at how it works. Genome Sequencing The first step in de-extinction is to collect the DNA of an extinct animal — like the woolly mammoth — and a close living relative — like the Asian elephant. While usable dinosaur DNA samples may be long gone, the mammoth’s relatively recent extinction and cold habitat mean it still has well-preserved genes. Once scientists have gathered this DNA, they must sequence each species’ genome. This process uncovers the order of each gene’s building blocks to learn how they work and what characteristics they produce. It’s difficult and time-consuming work, so it’s an ideal use case for AI. Studies show that AI shortens the time spent in genome sequencing and reduces errors in the process. Speed and accuracy are big concerns here, so AI is now essential in this stage of de-extinction. Filling in the Gaps After sequencing both species’ genomes, scientists compare them to see what elephant genes they must change to resemble the woolly mammoth’s. AI is crucial in this step, as there are gaps left to fill after sequencing. DNA has a 521-year half-life, so even well-preserved samples from over 1,000 years ago aren’t complete. AI can analyze genes to predict the order of the missing bits. It can then compare them to those of the Asian elephant to determine what elephant genes it can keep and what it must modify to look more like a mammoth. Machine learning’s predictive capabilities make it the perfect tool for this job. Accurately predicting what customers want is how AI saves Netflix $1 billion annually, and finding similarities in DNA sequences is a similar task. Gene Insertion and Verification It’s now time to modify Asian elephant genes to essentially create complete woolly mammoth DNA. This process is eerily similar to how it works in “Jurassic Park,” at least in the basics. Like in Michael Crichton’s work, real-life scientists cut out bits of living species’ DNA that don’t match and insert genes from the extinct species. This is possible through a technology called CRISPR gene editing — the same innovation that helps fight diseases like sickle cell anemia and malaria. After inserting mammoth genes into elephant DNA, scientists must verify that the resulting cells possess mammoth traits. Once again, AI is the ideal solution. Machine learning can test these cells faster and more accurately than manual methods. Embryo Transfer, Growth, and Birth At this point, scientists will have created hybrid elephant-mammoth cells. They remove the nucleus from an Asian elephant egg cell and replace it with the hybrid mammoth nucleus. They then stimulate the egg so it fertilizes and grows into an embryo. Once they have a healthy embryo, scientists transfer it to an African elephant to carry to term. African elephants are larger and have the longest pregnancy of any mammal, so they’re ideal mothers to grow a baby mammoth. After roughly 22 months, the elephant will give birth to the hybrid mammoth. While the mammoth’s genes won’t be identical to its extinct ancestors, it’ll essentially be a real woolly mammoth brought back from extinction. Ongoing De-Extinction Attempts Several research organizations are following this process to de-extinct species like the woolly mammoth. One biotechnology company — Colossal Laboratories — aims to resurrect the woolly mammoth by 2027 and is currently building the necessary genetic libraries to create the hybrid DNA. Colossal also hopes to de-extinct species like the dodo and Tasmanian tiger. While no project has successfully cloned an extinct species that lived more than a few minutes, advances in AI and gene editing technology are bringing the possibility closer. Other researchers are focusing on critically endangered species — not quite extinct but about to be. Scientists have successfully cloned a black-footed ferret using decades-old DNA, showing it’s possible to de-extinct animals with old genes. Researchers at the San Diego Zoo Alliance are trying to do the same for the northern white rhino, just two of which exist today. Why It Matters As cool as it is, why would scientists bother de-extincting species? It’s an expensive, complicated process, so what’s the point? Unlike in “Jurassic Park,” there is a noble goal here. Also, we’d probably need multiple versions to use with the source set so that it will look crisp on both high-density and low-resolution displays. So, we’re tasked with converting it to HTML; how can we do this? Some Downsides to Using Images and Viewport Units Well, we could probably use viewport units, but we’d need to add extra code if we were to put the ad in different locations where its dimensions would be different since everything would be based off the viewport and not the container dimensions. All day, I dream about powder. Whiteout blizzard conditions are preferred. My favorite days are when the grey clouds blanket the mountain depositing a never-ending stream of fat flakes of dry crisp champagne powder. I know that even while I am fortunate enough to shred freshies, in a few hours, the fields will be replenished, and my snorkel session will begin anew. To gain sight and perspective, I seek refuge in the trees. Bare birch and pine trees dot the glade. Within this wooded white paradise I can finally see the contours of the snow and read my line clearly. While trees give me sight during the daily Hokkaido blizzard, central bankers and politicians provide sight whilst I navigate the global capital markets. While no trader can predict the future, we can observe the decision tree facing our clueless overloads and assign probabilities to each outcome. If the probability the market assigns to an event is at odds with our own calculation, a trading opportunity is at hand. The crypto bull market is in its early stages, and we must not get carried away with our enthusiasm. As sure as Bitcoin blocks are produced every 10 minutes, the current filthy fiat financial system will meet its preordained inglorious end. However certain I am about this eventual outcome, the path to said future is unknown. We must stay vigilant and place our chips accordingly. Simply put, I have deployed enough capital, meaning sold fiat and bought crypto, for this stage of the cycle. I am preparing for a vicious washout of all the crypto tourists in March of this year. There are various signposts that give me this vision of the future. I shall lay out my reasoning and the inflection points I will observe that will provide me with the confidence to first short the crypto market in big size using Bitcoin puts and then resume selling US Treasury bills (T-bills) and acquiring more Bitcoin and other cryptos. The Variables There are three variables, in the form of questions, that collide with each other in March. When Will the Reverse Repo Program (RRP) Balance Decline Close to Zero? Liquidity is  being pumped into the system via a decline in the RRP balance. When this number gets close to zero, and I define that as a balance of $200 billion, the market will wonder what is next. There needs to be another source of dollar liquidity supplied to keep the party going. To understand more about the mechanics of how a declining RRP balance injects liquidity into the system, please read my essay “ ”. Bad Gurl I believe the RRP balance will hit $200 billion in early March. I arrived at this guestimate based on a calculation of the rate of decline in 2023 from a few different starting points. On March 12th, the broke banks must find the cash to swap with the US Treasuries and other eligible bonds they repo’d with the Fed. Ultimately, this is a call for Bad Gurl Yellen. The market will start getting inquisitive many weeks before about whether or not the banks will continue receiving this lifeline. The initial BTFP flow was that the banks gave a US Treasury bond that was worth $80 for example, on the open market, but received $100 of cash. When the program finishes, the bank must give back the $100 to then receive the original US Treasury bond. If the cash was given to a fleeing depositor, then absent selling more of its equity or issuing very high-yielding bonds, how will the bank get the cash? To understand why the BTFP was created and its implications for the pace and amount of fiat debasement, please read my essay “ ”. Kaiseki Will the Fed Cut Rates? The Fed’s March meeting concludes on the 20th of the month. Currently, the market expects the Fed to initiate its first rate cut of at least 0.25% since it started raising rates in March of 2021. These variables are codependent. The sequencing of events matters because it will affect the market’s assumption for the future of how much dollar liquidity will or will not be provided by the Fed and US Treasury Department. If .. Then Now we must assign probabilities to the different paths and anticipate the market’s reaction. Pace of RRP Decline If the RRP is run down close to zero by early March, the financial markets will start sagging. Remember the surge in US Treasury yields that occurred simultaneously with a dumping stock market? The only reason bonds had such an amazing rally starting from November 1st is the were published that day. Included inside this now must-read report, was a confirmation that the US Treasury would shift more borrowing to the short end of the yield curve. With more supply and higher yields on T-bills, money market funds (MMF) would be financially incentivised to use cash parked in the RRP to purchase T-bills. The decline in the RRP balance all else being equal adds liquidity to the system; this is what we have witnessed to date and is why the bond and stock markets globally pumped. quarterly Treasury refunding documents Without any other new sources of dollar liquidity, bonds, stocks, and I believe crypto will also get the stick. I will expand upon this later in the tactical trading section, but I will look to buy a sizable put option position on Bitcoin around this time. We can’t know the pace of RRP decline if at all, a priori. Therefore, I will watch the rate of change quite closely. I will adjust my trading strategy accordingly if it deviates materially from my forecast. In any case, I loaded up on crypto in the second half of 2023, and I believe now until April is a no-trade zone in terms of the addition of risk. BTFP 2024 is an election year, and the plebes of Pax Americana are sick and tired of bankster bailouts. Therefore, I believe Yellen, to project an air of confidence in the strength of the American banking system, will not renew the BTFP. However, once a few sufficiently large non-TBTF banks are forced into receivership because their equity falls close to zero, wiping out necessary regulatory capital, Bad Gurl Yellen will hang up her stilettos and put on her knitted slippers, thus transforming into Grandma Yellen. Grandma Yellen will hand out the sweet, sweet sugar of printed money to her wayward banking grandchildren in the form of a renewed BTFP. The combination of a lack of liquidity gushing from the RRP and the lack of printed money to cover the bond losses on the non-TBTF banks’ balance sheets will decimate the financial markets globally. The market must bring pain upon financial asset holders to force the Fed and Treasury back into the business of printing money. This is a correlation one moment. All assets, including crypto, will fall together as the market hyperventilates at the prospect of the free market working once more and cleansing the system of insolvent banking institutions. March FOMC Meeting The BTFP expires on March 12th, and the Fed rate decision is announced on March 20th. There are six trading days between these two crucial decision points. If my forecast is correct, the market will bankrupt a few banks within that period, forcing the Fed into cutting rates and announcing the resumption of the BTFP. Technically, the US Treasury cannot lend money to banks; that’s the job of the Fed. But suppose the Fed loses money by accepting collateral worth less than the dollars provided. In that case, those losses flow through to the Treasury, and ultimately, the American taxpayer as the Treasury must borrow more to fund losses at the Fed. Bitcoin initially will decline sharply with the broader financial markets but will rebound before the Fed meeting. That is because Bitcoin is the only neutral reserve hard currency that is not a liability of the banking system and is traded globally. Bitcoin knows that the Fed ALWAYS responds with a liquidity injection when things get bad. It might be called something new to confuse those who get their news from TikTok, but rest assured Bitcoin knows printed money in whatever guise is always printed money. Therefore Bitcoin will rise sharply before and into the Fed’s eventual capitulation to restarting money printer go brrr. The Other Side If I’m wrong, the following magic will occur: The RRP will decline slowly, and that liquidity will continue to prop up the financial markets late into the second quarter. Yellen will communicate that the BTFP will be extended well before March 12th. The Fed’s March meeting decision then becomes irrelevant. Whether they cut, hold, or raise, the net effect based on any of those outcomes, combined with all the other ways in which the Fed and Treasury are adding dollar liquidity to the market, remains stimulative. If the RRP rate of decline is slower than anticipated, I will not put on my put position at the beginning of March. Then, the date Yellen communicates that the BTFP will be renewed, is when I exit the no-trade zone. I will resume selling T-bills for Bitcoin and other cryptos. Tactical Trading Decisions Let’s move back to my base case of RRP exhaustion by early March, the BTFP being cancelled on the 12th only to be reinstated by the 20th, and a Fed rate cut. Now I will expand a bit on my trading plan. Bitcoin Puts As many of you know, I have a diverse crypto portfolio. My biggest positions are Bitcoin and Ether, representing ~70% of my portfolio. The other shitcoins I own are much less liquid, and in particular, the liquidity of the derivatives on these shitcoins is poor. Therefore, if I want a liquid macro crypto hedge, I must use Bitcoin derivatives. I use the word “hedge”; but this is a trading position. The trade setup I’m describing will take only a fortnight to resolve itself. Because this is a trade I will use options which allows me to know a priori my maximum loss; the premium paid for my puts. A bonus feature is I don’t have to monitor liquidation levels like I would if I traded a perpetual swap or futures contract. I expect Bitcoin to experience a healthy 20% to 30% correction from whatever level it has attained by early March. The washout could be even more severe if the slate of US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs has already commenced trading. Imagine if the anticipation of hundreds of billions of fiat flowing into these ETFs at a future date propels Bitcoin above $60,000 and close to its 2021 all-time high of $70,000. I could easily see a 30% to 40% correction due to a dollar liquidity rug pull. This is why I cannot buy Bitcoin until these March decision dates have passed. I think I’m a decent trader when I’m focused. I will attempt to top-tick the market in late February and then buy a sizable put position. I will buy puts expiring on June 28th. I don’t want the March 29th expiry because I’m entering the position in early March. The high negative theta might overwhelm any delta, gamma, and vega P&L. The longer expiry will be more expensive, but the premium won’t decay as fast because maturity is over a quarter out. I’ll set my maximum loss, which will be sizable relative to my standard trading position, and then purchase the puts. To get some juicy gearing on these puts, I will choose a strike 20% to 25% out of the money based on the current at-the-money quarterly June futures contract price. Exiting the Position Many traders, especially options traders, nail the entry but fumble the exit. Because option payouts are path-dependent, you might call the market right but still lose money if you wait too long to close your position. Every day I hold these puts, I lose money. If my forecasts are correct, the market will start meaningfully correcting around March 12th. Between the 12th and the 20th, I need to attempt to bottom-tick the market and close out my position hopefully in profit. If I get the policy call right, but Bitcoin holds or rises, I must close my put position immediately. Bull Market Continues By the end of March, we will be back on schedule. Bad Gurl Yellen and her duck Powell will once again have confirmed there is nothing they won’t do to safeguard the fiat solvency of the Pax Americana financial system. With that brief bit of market turmoil out of the way, crypto can again gush higher amid speculation as to the effect of the impending Bitcoin block reward halving. As such, I shall resume selling T-bills for Bitcoin and other cryptos. Curve Balls This essay has focused entirely on the decisions of the two people who run the Pax Americana financial system. All that “democracy” and things are still run by two unelected bureaucrats. In any case, there are other crucial actors in the fiat financial system kabuki theatre. China The Taiwan elections could result in one of the pro-China candidates winning, and then Xi Jinping turns on the yuan money printing taps. The gusher of yuan credit into the global markets overwhelms any US banking system troubles, resulting in crypto continuing to march higher even if the RRP runs dry and the BTFP is not renewed. The trading setup then becomes a lot less appealing in terms of risk vs. reward, and I might choose not to buy any puts but switch to buying more crypto risk. Japan The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is in the process of slowly allowing Japanese Government Bond (JGB) yields to rise. If JGB yields continue rising, it financially incentivizes Japanese corporates, pension and insurance funds, and households to repatriate capital. They will sell US Treasuries and buy JGB’s because the yields onshore are better. If this trend picks up steam, I will definitely bless you readers with an essay describing the phenomenon in more detail. Given that Japan is the largest holder of US Treasury bonds and the largest international creditor as viewed by its net international investment position, actions of the Japanese private sector could place enormous upward pressure on 10-year plus maturity US Treasury bond yields. This pressure could mount well before early March and necessitate more money-printing measures from Bad Gurl Yellen. If that is the case, I might not even get the chance to put this trade on because well before mid-March Yellen has already renewed the BTFP and rolled out some newfangled way to print money without calling it printing money. One candidate is the nascent plan by the US Treasury to buy off-the-run long-dated US Treasuries by issuing more short-dated bills. This is a soft version of yield curve control, which she called the buyback program. There was an explanatory paper written about this last year, I have if you wish to peruse it. linked it here Downside Risks With a new year, printed money gushing in various forms from every central bank, and the expected US-listed and Hong Kong-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs, the risks are on the downside. It is not hard to be bullish right now. I like to buy things that do well when situations the market believes never can happen are then viewed as possibly happening. The risk-reward from a trading perspective, using these signposts representing binary outcomes to take a non-consensus view, is better. I may ultimately be wrong. But if I’m right on an expected value basis, my profit is much greater than going with the herd.

At the meeting of the Association of Nurserymen in Chicago, last July, one of our prominent horticulturists described leaf variegation as a disease. Incidentally this brought up the question: Does the graft affect the stock upon which it is inserted? Much confusion of ideas exists upon this subject, largely due to a loose application of the term disease. Strictly speaking, this term is only applicable to that which shows the health of the plant to be impaired. It should be distinguished from aberrant or abnormal forms, for these are not necessarily indicative of disease. Nobody thinks of saying that red or striped roses are diseased because they are departures in color from the white flower of the type species; or that white, yellow, or striped roses are diseased when the color of the type species is red. Nobody thinks of saying that double flowers are evidences of disease in the plant, or that diminution in the size of leaves or variation in their form is a disease. Why then should it be said that because leaves may become of some other color than green, or become party-colored, therefore they are diseased? If it be said that flowers are not leaves, and that therefore the analogy is not a good one, the reply is, that flowers in all their parts, and fruits also, are only leaves differently developed from the type. This fact is a proven one, and so admitted to be by all botanists and vegetable physiologists of the present day. If it be objected that by becoming double, flowers lose the power of reproducing the variety or species, the answer is, that this loss of power is not necessarily the result of disease, but may arise from various other causes. Because an animal is castrated, it surely will not be claimed that therefore it is diseased. In man and in the higher animals the power of reproduction ceases at certain ages, but it cannot therefore be said that such men or animals are diseased. Neither is a redundancy of parts an unequivocal evidence of disease. Topknot fowls and ducks are as healthy as those which do not have such appendages, and a Shetland pony is as healthy as a Percheron horse, notwithstanding the difference in their size and weight. Again, color in block or in variegation is not positive evidence of disease in animal life. The white Caucasian is as healthy as the negro, the copper-colored Malay as the red Indian. The horse, ox, and hog run through white and red to black both in solid and party-color, and all are equally healthy; so with the rabbit, dog, cat, and others of our domestic animals. In wild animals, birds, reptiles, fishes, and insects, it is the same, so that mere difference in color or combinations of color are not evidence of disease. prima facie But some will say this may be true of animal life, but not of plant life. That there is a strong and evident analogy, the one with the other, is now universally admitted by physiologists. Formerly many physiologists considered leaf variegation a disease, because it generally ran in stripes lengthwise of the leaf or in spots. In the former case it was supposed to originate from disease in the leaf cells of the leaf stalk, which, as the cells grow longitudinally, naturally prolonged it to the end of the leaf. But the originating of varieties in which the variegation did not assume this form, with other considerations, has done much to upset this theory. In the variegated leaved snowberry we have the center and border of the leaf green, separated the one from the other by an isolated white or yellow zone. In the zebra-leaved eulalia and the zebra-leaved juncus, from Japan, we have the variegation of the leaf transversely instead of longitudinally, so that according to the old theory we have the anomaly of a healthy portion of the leaf producing an unhealthy portion, and that again a healthy one, and thus alternately along the whole length of the leaf. When we dissect a leaf in its primal development, we find that its cells contain colorless globules, by botanists called chlorophyl or phyto-color; these undergo changes according as they are acted upon by light, oxygen, or other agents, producing green, yellow, red, and other tints. This chlorophyl only exists in the outer or superficial cells of the parenchyma or cellular tissue of the leaf, and thus differs from starch and other substances produced in the internal cells, from which the light is more or less excluded. It is a fatty or wax-like substance, readily dissolved in alcohol or ether. The primal color of all leaves and flowers is white or a pale yellowish hue, as can readily be seen by cutting open a leaf or flower bud. The seed leaves of the French bean are white when they come out of the earth, but they become green an hour afterward under the influence of bright sunshine. A case is on record where in a certain section, some miles in extent, in this country, about the time of the trees coming into leaf, the sun did not shine for twenty days; the leaves developed to nearly their full size, but were of a pale or whitish color; finally, one forenoon the sun shone out fully, and by the middle of the afternoon the trees were in full summer dress. These facts show that the green color of leaves is due to the action of light. Variegation is sometimes produced independently of the chlorophyl, as in and , in which it is produced by a layer of air interposed between the epidermis or outer skin of the leaf and the cells beneath; this gives the leaf a bright, silvery appearance. Begonia argyrostigma Carduus marianus To what, then, are we to ascribe leaf variegation? I think that it is entirely due to diminished root power; by this I do not mean that the roots are diseased, but that they are either in an aberrant or abnormal state; but disease cannot be predicated upon either of these states. To explain: everybody knows to be a strong growing shrub, having umbels of rosy-colored flowers and strong, stout roots; the white flowered variety is quite dwarf, is more leafy and bushy than the species, and has more fibrous and delicate roots than the type; the crisp-leaved variety is still more dwarf, very bushy, and very leafy, and has very fine threadlike roots. This would indicate that the aberrance is in the roots; the two varieties are much more leafy in proportion to their size than the species, so that if the leaves controlled the roots, the latter should have been larger in proportion than those of the species. Again, once when, in the autumn, I was preparing my greenhouse plants for their winter quarters, I cut back a "Lady Plymouth" geranium, which chanced to be set away in a cool and somewhat damp cellar. When discovered the following February and started into growth in the greenhouse it produced nothing but solid green leaves, and never afterward produced a variegated leaf. This I attributed to its having gained greater root power during its long season of rest. By this I mean that the roots had grown and greatly increased in size, although there had not been any leaf growth. That roots under certain circumstances do so is well known. The roots of fir trees have been found alive and growing forty five years after the trunks were felled. The same has occurred in an ash tree after its trunk had been sawn off level with the ground. A root of has been known to keep on growing for twelve years after its top had been destroyed by frost; and in all that time it never made buds or leaves, yet it increased to seven times its original weight. The tuberous roots of some of the will continue to grow and increase in size after the tops have been accidentally broken off; and potatoes buried so deep in the earth that they cannot produce tops will produce a crop of new potatoes. Spirea callosa Ipomea sellowii Tropæolums On the other hand, I have had an oak-leaved geranium overlooked in a corner of the greenhouse until it was almost dried up for lack of water. When its branches were pruned back and it was started into growth only one branch showed the almost black center of the leaf, all the rest were clear green. This was an evident case of diminished root power, but the plant grew as thriftily as ever. The lack of the dark marking in the leaves was equivalent to the variegation in other varieties, only in a reverse direction. In practice, when gardeners wish to produce an abnormal condition in a tree or plant, they will, if they wish to dwarf it, graft it on a species or variety of diminished root power, and contrariwise, if they wish to increase its growth, will graft it upon a stock of strong root power. But in neither case can the graft be said to be diseased by the action of the roots of the stock. When this root power is so far diminished as to produce complete albinism, the shoots from such roots appear to partake of this diminished power, and to lose the power of making roots, and thus become very difficult to propagate. It is sometimes said that albino cuttings cannot be rooted at all, but this is a mistake, for I have succeeded in striking such cuttings from the variegated leaved . It required much care to do it; they did not, however, retain their albino character after they rooted and started into growth. Hydrangea Albinism and white variegation in leaves appear to be due to the chlorophyl in such leaves being able to resist the action of the three (red, yellow, and blue) rays of light. What we call color in any substance or thing is due to its reflecting these different rays in various proportions of combination and absorbing the rest of them, the various proportions giving the various shades of color. White is due to the reflection of all of them, and black to the absorption of them. In some plants with variegated foliage we have the curious fact that the cells containing chlorophyl reflecting one color produce cells which reflect an entirely different color. In the coleus "Lady Burrill," for instance, the lower half of the leaf is of a deep violet-crimson color, and the upper half is golden yellow. In other varieties of coleus, in , and other plants, we have foliage without a particle of green in it, and yet they are perfectly healthy. This shows that green leaves are not absolutely necessary to the health of a plant. Perilla nankiensis As a proof of leaf variegation being a disease, the speaker alluded to cited a case in which a green leaved abutilon, upon which a variegated leaved variety had been grafted, threw out a variegated leaved shoot below the graft. This can easily be explained. The growth of the trunk or stem of all exogenous plants, or those which increase in size on the outside of the stem, is brought about by the descent of certain formative tissue called cambium, elaborated by the leaves and descending between the old wood and the bark, where it is formed into alburnum or woody matter. Some think that it is also formed by the roots and ascends from them as well as descending from the leaves. Be this as it may, there is no doubt about its descent. In such comparatively soft-wooded, free growing plants as the abutilon the descent of the cambium is very free and in considerable quantity, so that the stock would soon be inclosed in a layer of it descending from the graft. When being converted into woody matter it also forms adventitious buds which under certain favorable circumstances will emit shoots of the same character as the graft from which it was derived. The graft is such cases may be said to inclose the stock in a tube of its own substance, leaving the stock unaffected otherwise. The variegated shoot in this case was in reality derived from the downward growth of the graft and not from the original stock, which was not therefore contaminated by the graft. In cases where the stock is of much slower growth than the graft, or the graft is inserted upon a stock of some other species, the descending cambium does not inclose the stock, but makes layers of wood on the stem of the graft, which thus, as is frequently seen, overgrows the stock, sometimes to such an extent as to make it unsightly. Nobody ever saw an apple shoot from a crab stock, a pear from a quince stock, or a peach shoot from a plum stock. This is one of the arguments in favor of the view that cambium also rises from the roots. Again, to show that the stock is not affected by the graft, or the graft by the stock, except as to root power, let any person graft a white beet upon a red beet, or contrariwise, when about the size of a goosequill, and when they have attained their full growth, by dividing the beet lengthwise he will find the line of demarkation between the colors perfectly distinct, neither of them running into the other. The theory that leaf variegation is a disease has been held by many distinguished botanists and is in nowise new. But this theory has been controverted, and we think successfully, by other botanists, and it is not now accepted by the more advanced vegetable physiologists. There are now so many acute and industrious students and observers in every department of science, and the accumulation of facts is so rapid and so great, that very many of the older theories are being set aside as not in accord with the newly discovered facts. A student brought up in institutions where the old theories are inculcated has afterward to spend half his time in unlearning what he had been previously taught, and the other half in studying the new facts brought to his notice and testing the theories promulgated by men of science. Botanical science does not wholly consist in the classification and nomenclature of plants, but largely consists in a knowledge of vegetable anatomy and physiology, and these require much study and some knowledge of other sciences, such as chemistry, meteorology, geology, etc. Without such general knowledge it is difficult to form a harmonious theory in regard to any of the phenomena of plant life.
