But with all their resources and market power, I’m sure there’s always something interesting cooking in the kitchens of wherever Amazon’s headquarters happens to be right now. So let me throw my purely speculative prediction into the silence. As I describe in my , AWS has happily replaced your server room with EC2, your SAN and NAS with S3, your data warehousing with Redshift, and your database with RDS (and Aurora). They’ve also invented entirely new deployment models: politely informing you, for instance, that you simply have to serve your mobile apps via serverless functions (Lambda). Learn AWS in a Month of Lunches book So what’s next? Well how about enterprise routing? What is enterprise routing these days? For decades, large organizations have controlled their internal network traffic with switches and routers configured by proprietary operating systems. The hardware is expensive (a single appliance can easily hit $10,000) and the cost of hiring the trained admins needed to maintain them can be much higher. But is all that really still necessary? These days your workloads are more likely to live in the cloud than in your actual office. Even in-house Internet of Things devices can easily be controlled from the cloud using, for instance, . I’m guessing that most modern on-premises enterprise routing involves controlling how people connect to production resources and to each other (email, VOIP, video) — but even that is more and more likely to be outsourced to SaaS solutions. AWS IoT I may be missing something, but I just don’t see a compelling case for hardware switches here. Software-defined networking (SDN) should easily be up to the task. Why not just cover your campus in wireless access points, authenticate users using Kerberos or Active Directory, and configure your way to permissions/connectivity perfection. How AWS can rule the routing world? Which brings me back to AWS. They’ve already got all the bases covered for authentication ( ) and high-end remote connectivity ( ). It probably wouldn’t take much for them to extend their networks to your campus. Perhaps they’d allow you to create local — complete with configurable subnets — that you’d use to organize your local infrastructure. AWS Directory Service AWS Direct Connect VPCs I’m imagining a company’s admin logging into the AWS Console to onboard a couple of new hires from marketing. They’d be added to an AWS IAM “Marketing” group that’s already got access to Amazon QuickSight dashboards and streaming data from your public-facing web servers running on EC2. Network Test and Automation: PyATS 101 in 5 Minutes

Like many technology professionals, my first networking certification was a Cisco Certified Network Associate ( ). I completed it in a few days, locked in a room in my house, and when I was done, I said to myself, “I know networking now!” Like most who pass the exam, I was very excited about it. CCNA But I wanted to know more, so I moved on to become a Cisco Certified Networking Professional by passing the exam. This took my understanding to a much deeper level. After passing that exam, I thought to myself, “Wow. This networking thing is big and I am starting to understand it, but there is so much more to learn.” CCNP So, over the next six months as I was working in networking, I prepared for and passed the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert ( ) exam. After receiving the CCIE certification, I said to myself, “Oh my gosh, there is so much that I don’t know about networking.” CCIE As I moved from an associate to an expert, I came to embrace what is known as the knowledge continuum. This is the process by which we update and expand what we know with new information, acknowledging that there is always more to learn. The more we learn in our careers, especially deep careers like networking or cloud computing, the more we realize how little we actually know and how much knowledge it takes to become truly great at something. I became qualified to work on big projects that really enabled me to learn when I passed the CCIE exam. After 25 years of working in this field, I am still learning technology every single day. Embracing the knowledge continuum, which is critical for every technology professional, began for me when I passed that impossible two-day exam and was given CCIE certification #7417. And that is why the CCIE exam is, and always has been, my favorite introductory level IT and networking certification. What you gain from passing the CCIE exam I believe the CCIE certification has two other key benefits beyond opening the door to a deeper appreciation of the knowledge continuum. The first of these involves focus. I have been coaching people for approximately 20 years on how to improve their technology careers. One of things I have found is that most people do not focus on their jobs. In today’s tech world, the push is to get people to secure ten little mini AWS certifications so they can say they are “10X Certified.” The reality is that achieving those ten certifications keeps you from focusing on your particular job. It is like trying to learn ten different people’s jobs. In the end, you know nothing about nothing. The CCIE is not a paper-based exam, like those for which you can buy a practice test with the answer key and then go pass the exam. The CCIE is a deep exam. Preparing for it requires that you go over 50,000 to 75,000 pages of reading. People spend hundreds of hours in labs practicing to learn the skills. Realistically, it is the hardest certification exam in the world. In order to pass it, you must be focused. The CCIE forces students to focus all of their efforts on becoming truly great at their particular career. That alone separates those who become CCIE certified from everyone else in the tech field. Those who achieve a bunch of little introductory certifications — the topical certifications that do not really teach anything valuable — do not have the focus that is necessary to succeed. The CCIE teaches you what you need to know to actually do your job immediately upon completion of the certification. The second major benefit of the CCIE is related to employment. The CCIE certification virtually guarantees employment, especially for those who have a good attitude, good communication skills, a good energy level, and are willing to work. Cisco provides the CCIE exam at one of its locations. The exam presents students with a nearly impossible scenario, which is not revealed to the student ahead of time and which is designed to not work. This means that solving the problem requires an expert who not only knows how systems work, but who can build it with the correct design and building configuration. When you pass this exam, someone from Cisco gives you a stamp that basically says, “I, a representative of Cisco, say that this person is ready to go.” Potential employers see applicants with the CCIE certification as job ready. It is one of the few certifications in the world that provides you with the level of competency and focus that can truly get you a job. I love the CCIE certification because it not only reveals the depth of information that tech professionals need to learn, but also focuses those who it certifies on the skills that can truly help them to become experts at a job and gain employment. It marked the true beginning of my education in the tech world, but not nearly the end of it.

Internet access is often seen as a given, but the process of connecting the developed world has been a hot button issue among the Silicon Valley elite. Any number of suggestions have been made, and some high concept attempts have ultimately failed in their deployment. The MeshBox Foundation is seeking to leverage a combination of their MeshBox technology and the upcoming release of the MESH token to introduce connectivity to those remote locations. Previous attempts by tech giants like Facebook and Google have ultimately failed due to over-engineering. Satellite and drone based WiFi may yet become the norm, but in the short term, developing nations need a measure that can be deployed quickly and effectively. The most logical solution is developing a robust mesh networking system that allows a local community to access many of the features of the Internet through their own internal network. Any number of computers, tablets or smart devices can link into the mesh network and access local websites, media and file storage. If any one device is connected to the Internet, the others can use the mesh network to access this connection as well. Even if the mesh network is severed from the Internet at large, the networking function is still fully usable. The Technology behind Mesh Networking The MeshBox device acts as a mesh networking hub directly out of the box. Rather than the inherent difficulties of creating a network between disparate devices, they can connect directly to the MeshBox and immediately have access to the mesh network therein. Multiple MeshBox devices can be linked together to create a larger geographical area, as well as a larger storage base for media and file sharing. Within the MeshBox network, devices will access local pages and media through the SmartMesh protocol at a lightning fast rate — even in areas where internet connectivity is poor or non-existent. In locations where there may only be a single internet connection at a central location, an installed MeshBox can share that connection with any other device on the SmartMesh network. How the MeshBox System can be Deployed in Remote Locations Lacks of internet and electrical infrastructure have both been taken into account during development of the MeshBox. A single device is able to run off of solar power, and can project their signal up to 2km with that electrical supply. A series of these self-sufficient devices can link entire remote and undeveloped villages or towns into a community-wide intranet. From there, local governments can provide quick access to critical information; enterprising individuals can create media or music marketplaces and even establish a local e-commerce system. This level of connectivity can have an immense impact on developing nations. Investing in a single point of access to the Internet could link their entire village into the global network and provide a near limitless supply of information. This information — anything from plans for critical equipment to weather and atmospheric data — can be stored locally on the mesh network for rapid access by anyone in the area. How the MeshBox can Lighten Server Loads in Developed Areas Even the First World can benefit from the mesh networking provided by MeshBox. Large events that have attracted far beyond the usual amount of network traffic can plan in advance to distribute an appropriate amount of the devices around the venue. With enough capacity, the mesh network can allow attendees to easily access event information without routing directly through to an Internet site. As a direct result, traffic through local cell networks and wireless routers will decrease exponentially and should no longer slow to a crawl. If the event planners wish, they can also connect the mesh network to the Internet, and use the internal SmartMesh protocol to distribute traffic and lighten the server load. This way, individual users uploading to social media will not bog down the local networks and everyone will continue to have access through the course of the event. Integration of the MESH Token Within the SmartMesh protocol, the MESH blockchain token can be used to fund certain actions — and can be earned for facilitating them. Users wishing to store files and media on the local mesh network can do so by spending a certain amount of their MESH token supply. They can then charge others for accessing that media, or provide it freely if they wish. MeshBox devices that are connected to the Internet can charge for access to that connection, helping to create an internal community e-commerce market. Once the MESH token is established as having monetary value, it can then be used as a form of digital currency for real world goods. Purchases can be made through the mesh network and MESH tokens can be traded back and forth in areas where electronic banking is completely unknown. Ultimately, the MeshBox Foundation may have found the solution to the world’s connectivity issues — in a cost effective, scalable and easily implemented SmartMesh protocol network.
