Unlocking Chainlink's Potential: Stake.link's Strategic Vision for a Liquid Future Hi Jonny, great to have you here for our "Behind the Startup" series. Please tell us about your background? Ishan Pandey: Great to speak. For me, I got into the space like most people would do. I had some BTC in 2014/2015, but I really got into things before the 2017 cycle, and I became interested in Chainlink as the token offering took place in 2017. I joined the Chainlink slack channel, started speaking to everyone about the project, and I came to understand the premise of the project. I saw promise in Chainlink. It was that promise that made me want to get more hands-on in the space, and that’s when I started LinkPool. Jonny Huxtable: LinkPool began as sort of a bedroom project I worked on the side of my full-time job. It was one of the first third parties to build on top of Chainlink, run infrastructure, and carry it on from there. LinkPool was one of the first three node operators that went live on Ethereum mainnet in the Summer of 2019, and we’ve played a significant role in not just breaking down the barriers to participation in the Chainlink Ecosystem, but also developing the tools and the infrastructure for node operators on the network. Stake.link: The First-Mover Liquid Staking Protocol in the Chainlink Ecosystem Stake.link is described as the "first-mover liquid staking protocol in the Chainlink Ecosystem." What motivated the creation of stake.link, and what unique value does it offer to users? Ishan Pandey: To answer this question, it was the original vision and drive of a pooling system for Chainlink in 2017 that drove the vision to build stake.link but on a much grander scale. With the explosion of LSTs with the rise of Ethereum staking protocols, it became clear that with the launch of Chainlink Staking it would also greatly benefit from a liquid staking protocol that has a cohort of the very best Node Operators that participate in the Chainlink network. That’s what stake.link is, the premier staking protocol for Chainlink backed by the very best. Jonny Huxtable: The Concept of Liquid Staking and Stake.link Protocol Could you explain the concept of liquid staking and how it works within the stake.link protocol? Ishan Pandey: Liquid staking is a concept that allows users to stake their tokens in a way that they remain liquid and tradable, rather than being locked up in a staking contract. Jonny Huxtable: Traditional staking typically involves locking up tokens in a network's smart contract to support its operations and earn rewards. These tokens are usually illiquid and can't be readily traded or used elsewhere. Liquid staking, on the other hand, enables users to stake their tokens while still having the freedom to trade or utilize them for other purposes. It's made possible through liquid staking tokens, LSTs, representing the staked assets' value, which can be traded or used in DeFi applications. These are very visible in the Ethereum network, and we’re working to make it just as visible for the Chainlink Ecosystem. This is currently the case with General Access Staking in the Chainlink Community Staking Pool, and the stake.link protocol addresses the issue of locked staked tokens. At the core of this is the withdrawal capability feature. This feature provides a liquidity buffer in the protocol, allowing users to withdraw their staked LINK from the protocol by depositing their receipt tokens that they are given after they’ve staked LINK: this is the stLINK which represents the staked amount of LINK. The protocol is built to be as seamless as possible even for people who haven’t been involved in DeFi or moved their tokens off of exchanges in the past. Jonny Huxtable: Right now, Chainlink is at the end of its version 0.1 of Staking and all space is taken up. Chainlink Labs who builds the infrastructure for the entire Ecosystem has announced that Staking v0.2 is coming in Q4 2023, so between now and the end of the year. This version of staking entails an increase to the amount of tokens that can be staked from 25M in v0.1 to 45M in v0.2. To start the user journey on stake.link, a user would first need to connect their Web3 wallet containing LINK tokens to the platform, and deposit LINK tokens in the “holding zone” that we call the Priority Pool. Once Staking v0.2 arrives and General Access opens to the public, the LINK deposited in the Priority Pool will be staked in the General Access Community Pool using Chainlink Automation contracts. That means we’ve crafted smart contracts that recognize down to the second when the General Access Pool opens up to the public, and they will immediately begin auto staking Priority Pool LINK so that the users don’t have to. Once a user’s LINK is staked, they’re then able to claim their staked LINK receipt token, stLINK to their wallet and decide for themselves what they’d like to do with it. Users will then earn rewards for staking their LINK tokens. Node operators, who provide services in the Chainlink Ecosystem, earn rewards in the form of a delegation fee through stake.link’s native SDL token. Community stakers, who supply LINK collateral to secure the network and act as alerters if they notice the ETH/USD price feed has not updated within a set time frame, receive rewards after delegation and core contributor fees to the protocol. The rewards earned depend on the staking strategy and the capacity of the staked pool. At launch, stake.link enabled a "Node Operator" strategy pool, and in 2023, the pool capacity will be increasing for node operators. Chainlink has rolled out, and the node operators have scaled the use of other Web3 services such as smart contract automation, Verifiable Randomness (VRF), and recently Data Streams where applications no longer have large deviation thresholds for price feeds – price feeds can now be updated at a hyperfast rate compared to the previous 0.5% deviation threshold as was the standard up until recently and in DeFi Summer. Data Feeds has immense potential and was needed in order to cater to larger players in the broader financial industry that require hyperfast, reliable reference data with little to no deviation threshold in order to operate properly onchain. This will only grow and enable further adoption. NFTs are another sector of Web3 ripe for adoption, and much like DeFi, can benefit immensely from Chainlink Web3 services. VRF is a critical one, ensuring that NFT mints are verifiably random and fair for all participating users – regardless if a user is retail, enterprise, or anything in between. We also see a lot of potential in dynamic NFTs (dNFT) too. These are NFTs with encoded smart contract logic that enables them to automatically change its metadata, characteristics based on external conditions and events. The market has already spoken in that it wants NFTs that update based on external events. The simplest form of this is a basketball card, for example. If someone owns a tokenized basketball player’s card (NFT), their statistics will change over time as the player continues their career. NFTs need the ability to update their characteristics, and node operators as those in stake.link enable just that. Going beyond the very basic use-cases of something like a basketball card, though, is something like tokenized real estate – An NFT representing a property that could reflect numerous factors such as maintenance history, age, market value, and more. They are constantly looking to expand the size of their team but have a very high threshold for the quality of talent they are willing to take on. Given how few expert devs are actually available across the entire industry and the odds that newcomers might possibly be tempted to work on other projects, the growth of the team will likely face a bottleneck/delay of some sort. 3. Honeypot for Hackers Chainlink oversees the safe transferrence of around $4 Billion USD per day through its systems. Being responsible with so much value attracts the attention of less-than-honest actors that are constantly monitoring their activity and attempting to subvert their security. Takeaway: As you might have noticed there is a disproportionate amount of positives on the left side of the chart. Not only are there more beneficial points, but the relative importance of each positive far outweighs the potential impacts of the negatives. With just one weakness and three threats that don't pose an existential risk to Chainlink's livelihood, it seems as though LINK is a fundamentally sound project. (which is honestly not even that big a deal) Conclusion: It’s possible that my biases might have skewed the perception of the project. However, based on the single fact of how much critical infrastructure Chainlink provides and the integrity that the project upholds, it is hard not to bet on them. Linking on-chain environments with real-world data and systems helps to increase the possible use cases for smart contracts. Three Pillars of Digital Change Chainlink is providing services for applications supporting the three main pillars of digital change: digital information, digital assets, and digital agreements. Digital assets solve issues regarding ownership of real-world assets by introducing tokenization for storing value digitally. Digital agreements will be an important part of how traditional enterprises will start adopting smart contract technology, as corporations move towards using cryptographic proofs. These three pillars will fundamentally change the way corporations and many societal transactions  are run in the next few years. Unexplored Smart Contract Use Cases While DeFi is the most widely-known use case of smart contracts and oracles, Brent believes that the full implications and possibilities brought about by smart contracts are still not fully understood. If, for example, global TradFi markets start operating via hybrid smart contracts, the market for smart contracts would potentially be worth trillions of dollars. These markets include enterprise systems, asset management, tokenized carbon credits, payment rails (a payment rail is a payment platform that moves money from a payer to a payee, such as PayPal.), Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) like China’s digital Yuan, global insurance, commodities, real estate, capital markets, and more. According to Brent, it is only a matter of time before corporations start exploring the possibilities brought about by smart contract technology. Whatever application of smart contracts they end up using, Chainlink can provide data and computation to their smart contracts. Smart Contract Economy Oracles are a vital piece of blockchain infrastructure that will enable a feature-rich smart contract economy. High-quality data is needed for the growth of the smart contract economy. Currently, decentralized applications (dApps) like (a cryptocurrency wallet built for DeFi use) are highly reliant on oracles to function. High-quality data will become much more important to business cases in the future once traditional enterprises start onboarding to the blockchain economy. Reference contracts must be highly responsive, and have high-quality data as well as strong quality guarantees. These inputs are crucial for ensuring high-quality cryptographic guarantees. Metamask Services Powered by Cryptographic Truth introduces automated verification of reserves for dApps and other types of applications. One use case of it involves helping to verify the reserves of collateralized stablecoins. Stablecoins are typically backed one-to-one with fiat or other assets. Chainlink Proof of Reserve offers a verification service for the reserves of tokens used as collateral, thus providing the ability to verify if a stablecoin is truly collateralized as advertised. Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol Case study: Tokenized Carbon Credits One exciting case study that Chainlink helps enable is through a collaboration with Greenworld, a non-governmental organization (NGO). NGOs are nonprofit groups independent of governments, organized primarily by private citizens. Greenworld has a product called A.I.R.S, in which farmers in Africa are paid to regenerate farmland. Once the farmland starts growing and thriving, satellite imagery can capture the change from a barren landscape to a regenerated forest. An Intro to Chainlink: 3 Pillars of Digital Change

Saša Milić is uniquely placed to compare oracle networks objectively. On top of being a software engineer and data scientist, Saša is also a co-founder of API3. While she no longer works full-time at any network, Saša has worked closely with various oracle projects in the last few years; during her presentation at the Blockchain Oracle Summit, Saša shared “a smattering of hot takes” about some of the more widely used oracle networks in the space today – including Chainlink, UMA, Tellor, Nest and BAND. In this article, we’ll guide you through her presentation, sharing key concepts. https://youtu.be/c0aOAkjzTRA?embedable=true Chainlink Oracle Review The most widely used oracle network today, has a reputation for providing consistently good data. According to DeFi Pulse (at the time of presentation), 15 of the top 20 DeFi protocols by Total Value Locked (TVL) use Chainlink, making the network a cornerstone of the DeFi Ecosystem. Chainlink Chainlink works through a decentralized network of nodes that collect data from reliable sources and aggregate the results on-chain. Chainlink refers to this as “t ” because each oracle network, node operator, and the data source is selected in a decentralized way. hree layers of decentralization According to Chainlink, this in the network. eliminates any single point of failure Chainlink, established in 2017, is well-known for consistently providing reliable price data. Town Crier is a system that connects smart contracts to external data from trusted websites while also ensuring the confidentiality of the data. Chainlink Labs Town Crier DECO DECO uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify off-chain data while maintaining full data privacy. Chainlink’s whitepapers were also co-authored by well-known cryptographer and Cornell Tech professor Ari Juels who is now the Chief Scientist at Chainlink Labs. Since Saša’s talk at BOS22 in June, Chainlink has that staking will be live later this year. Staking will provide the network with more crypto-economic security, as stakers will initially be tasked with identifying and reporting node operators that fail to meet predetermined standards. For more information on LINK staking, read . announced this article UMA Oracle Review At , security is formalized in an economic guarantee around the cost of corrupting an oracle through their Data Verification Mechanism (DVM). The way these economic guarantee works is based on the idea that every oracle has a minimum price needed to become corrupted. In most cases, this is the price needed to take control of 51% of the voting tokens and is called the Cost of Corruption (CoC). UMA On the other side of the CoC is the potential (PfC). This is the maximum amount of money that can be gained from corrupting an oracle. Therefore, if CoC is kept above PfC, there would be no economic incentive for someone to corrupt the oracle. UMA is designed to measure the PfC of all the contracts in their system, then keep CoC above that number through a series of token buybacks triggered when necessary – more information . Profit from Corruption can be found here UMA also employs the concept of the “Optimistic Oracle” based on their . In essence, when a contract requests data – the “requestor” – anyone can propose an answer – the “proposer.” dispute resolution model The proposer needs to post a bond together with their data. Anyone else can verify that data and raise a dispute to UMA’s DVM if the data is incorrect – the disputer. If no one disputes that data within a set amount of time, the proposer’s bond is released back to them, and they are paid a pre-agreed fee. Because disputes are economically incentivized, a lack of disputes can be seen as verification that a piece of data is true. This mechanism is what makes UMA an ‘optimistic’ oracle. Tellor Oracle Review was one of the earlier projects to talk about (OEV). Simply put, OEV is the potential profit a party could earn by being in the position to update the oracle. Similar in principle to Miner Extractable Value (MEV), if only one party is allowed to update an oracle, they would be in a unique position to take advantage of the difference in prices before they make the update. Tellor Oracle Extractable Value For example, if party A has control of the ETH/USD price feed updates on a certain exchange, then that party can make trades before updating the prices since they know which way the price is going. Tellor approached this potential problem by building an oracle protocol that is truly decentralized, allowing anyone to be a data provider. Their protocol takes advantage of OEV as a means of making payments to oracle data providers rather than using gas fees. A more in-depth explanation of OEV can be found in written by Nicholas Fett, CTO of Tellor. this article Tellor has also been integrated as a fallback oracle in the Liquity protocol’s , which is significant given the effort that the team at Liquity has put into oracle research and their top position on the list. dual-oracle system DeFi Safety Conversely, Tellor’s dispute resolution system has a natural paradox. The system works by paying people to dispute incorrect data. If they raise their dispute successfully, they are paid in Tribute (TRB), Tellor’s native token. The presence of disputers, therefore, works to discourage false reports in the first place. However, since disputers profit from reporting faulty data, discouraging false reports would decrease the demand for disputers since no faulty reports mean no one can profit from disputing. This, in turn, leads to no one watching the data to dispute its accuracy, which then creates more opportunities for false reports. This, as Saša notes, is not a problem unique to Tellor but is common in optimistic oracle systems. Nest Oracle Review is currently only used for price feeds, and miners provide the data for these prices. Nest When miners report a price, they have to put up the same amount of money that they are reporting. This means that if they indicate the wrong price, it creates an opportunity for someone to take advantage of the difference between the reported and actual prices to make a profit. Band “Cross-chain data oracle.” According to Saša’s research, has relatively high adoption within DeFi projects. Despite that, there has been only one known exploit of Band, indicating their overall reliability. Band Protocol Band’s are speed and scalability – to process a large number of data requests within seconds; cross-chain compatibility – to be able to serve most of the available blockchains, and data flexibility – to handle different types of data and the different ways they are retrieved. This, according to Saša, is lacking a key area – security. design goals Band also runs a separate blockchain called . This makes it harder to evaluate its security because the security of the oracle is dependent on the overall security of this sidechain – explained here by . Bandchain CoinDesk Additionally, BAND holders do not participate in validation directly on Bandchain. Instead, they delegate their tokens to validators, who run validation nodes and retrieve data from the data sources. In each request, validators are randomly selected to retrieve and verify the data before committing them to the blockchain – more information about their system can be found .
