Making sense of real-world data: ROC curves, and when to use them

An in-depth guide about working with Interdependent Promises Photo by on Luis Perdigao Unsplash As a developer, I'm constantly looking for ways to write cleaner code. A year ago I published a library called , designed to facilitate consuming Restful APIs in the frontend with Javascript. I'm now building a v2 of the library and, in this process, I noticed there was room to make the code cleaner, specifically when it comes to Promises. Premiere In this article I won't explain the basics of Promises, but if you're looking for that, check out , he does a great job at it. Dave Atchley’s article Disclaimer: Looking for async/await examples? Jump to the end and click on the repository link. Although Promises are not an exclusivity of HTTP requests, that's what they're usually used for, so this will be the topic of this article's examples. Let's get started: This is a straight-forward piece of code and does its job well. However, if we take the same function and add more functionalities, such as caching, it can start getting complex. Here's an example: As you can see, this example is not as clean as the previous one. does way too many things. Sure it's not the end of the world, but ideally each function should do just one thing, so it's easier to test and reuse it. fetchAndCacheUser This problem becomes even more apparent if we add another level of caching. So let's add Promise caching (to prevent two identical requests to be made) and see how it looks: We're even farther away from "doing just one thing". The more things we add to this code the messier it will get, as well as harder to reuse. If we decide to create a for example, it would require us to copy all this code. fetchAndCacheItem Breaking it down The first step for breaking this down is to separate things into more functions, each one taking care of one concern. What we're gonna do is create three functions, each one responsible for doing one of the three things: Cache promise Cache result Fetch data The main challenge here this to connect one piece to another, since not all of then need to execute every time (e.g. when cached). To accomplish that we’ll provide callbacks to the cache functions, so they be called when the cache is not present. Here's the code: (caching methods are hidden for clarity) Much better huh? We do have more lines of code, but it's a lot easier to read an maintain. Going back to the mention, with our concerns separate, we can start to see a path for reusing the same functions. fetchAndCacheItem The next step We've already come to a satisfactory point, but what if I tell you we can do even better? Taking a look at our last function, , we can see that the functions are declared in a reverse order of execution, which can be quite confusing. We also have to declare a new variable and assign it a function for each step, cluttering the code. fetchAndCacheUser To solve these problems, I created the library. Here's how the function looks like with : promise-cascade fetchAndCacheUser` promise-cascade As you can see, the code is now written in the natural order and doesn't have the clutter. const ... = () => ... What do you currently do and what’s your favorite part about it? I am the founder/CEO of Cascadia Carbon Inc. We are working with CODEX, a carbon offset data exchange, to engage previously excluded individuals and communities to plant, care for, maintain and steward trees, with the ultimate goal of creating a dynamic catalog/inventory of all the living trees in the world. I am only one person, which often makes my work feel overwhelming, and have difficulty distilling our value proposition down so people understand the importance of what we do, but I helped develop a framework “greenpilling” which can help individuals understand the importance of trees in the face of climate change, the impending biosphere collapse, and likely the resulting chaos. My favorite part of Cascadia Carbon Inc. is our expansive vision: we are planning to work with NASA, SacceX, and orbital dynamics to grow redwood trees and other plants on the moon and mars, and the bigger our company grows, the more carbon we remove from our biosphere, by enabling individual to engage in direct climate action via tree planting in their neighborhood. We plan to reach gigaton scale before 2040, with 2Gt stored, verified, and validated five years later, and to scale to over 10Gt by 2050. 🌙🌲🚀 How did you get started with your Tech Career? I built a desktop computer from components my senior year of high school, but my fascination with technology goes back much further. I remember using basic “VR” setup at the lliberty science center in NYC back in middle school, I think? What’s your favorite thing about the internet? The ability to connect instantly with others, share research, findings, and insight, and plan/find your community. The pseudo-anonymity is an interesting sub-feature, which makes it special, too. It’s an apocalypse of ‘walking dead’ proportions and you can only own a singular piece of technology, what would it be? Absolutely, 100%, a bicycle. Nearly silent, it amplifies human power and allows you to travel swiftly and silently, taking advantage of massive existing car-centric infrastructure, and is easy to repair. The noise from firearms and cars will 100% attract zombies/attention. Stay silent, stay secret. Use a bike. What is your least favorite thing about the internet? How it amplifies human flaws, and makes it so much easier to take and hold a less nuanced position. It’s perceived anonymity. The way the algorithm centers cheap virality and excludes neurodiversity and nuance. If you were given $10 million to invest in something today what would you invest in and why? My personal growth. Would you rather travel 10 years into the past or 10 years into the future? Give reasons for your answer. Neither, the present is all we have. If forced to choose, ten years into the past, I'd be able to redo many of my decisions, and “play the markets”/“predict” the future/and become a more accurate shaman/superforecaster. It depends on the parameters though. Would I remain the same age? Skipping forward or backwards seems dangerous. How do you feel about AI? It is sufficiently advanced/complex as to be indistinguishable from magic, and therefore, to me, is essentially a godhead. It might be alien in origin, and I believe “it”, if it exists separately from us, is ambivalent about our species and society. It raises serious questions about free will, determinism vs. individuality, and freedom, and provides interesting fodder for multiverse and simulation theories. The real question for me is: is there a “deus ex machina” with AI, or is it just us making sufficiently advanced “FOR” loops that we have fooled ourselves into thinking it is a separate, independently intelligent entity? Does it even matter? I variably think of it as a silicon-based alien life form, an organism which we are just making contact with, akin to smashing a wall down and seeing only parts of it, or perhaps a “golden calf” we have created and are trying to imbue with life. Donations aren’t uncommon in crypto. Some altcoins and Dapps were created with that purpose in mind. A lot of NGOs and several good causes have benefited from donations. However, perhaps the ones behind free open-source software are a little bit neglected, to say the least. We’re talking about open-source developers. In case you didn’t know this, most of them don’t receive any payment for their work. “Open-source software” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a free product. It means that the code of that software is publicly available for review and open to collaboration. But usually, it is free. Quite popular open-source software like LibreOffice, Gimp, VLC Media Player, and Bitcoin itself rely on the goodwill of developers worldwide (and donations from users). This is like a hobby for them because nobody pays them for it, in most cases. So, do they create this software and give it away to the public? Without any monetary benefit? It’s more complicated than that. If you’re a carpenter, you could build a chair and give it away easily. Your goodwill ends when the chair arrives at the final user. Open-source software is different for a simple reason: it needs constant maintenance and updates to survive. Funding open-source projects The bad news about these good-will-driven projects is that developers aren’t robots. They need to eat and pay bills, like everyone else. Since open-source development can’t grant them enough money to do this, they take “real” jobs outside of it. Often full-time jobs, which leave them with little time to volunteer. As a result, according to (Ohloh), Without proper support or a team behind them, they’d be destined to die. Funding is a in the open-source community. If interested, they still can do several things to monetize their product, but they’re mostly programmers, not businessmen, marketers, or lawyers. Even “free” licenses can be tricky sometimes, and they might become a real obstacle to monetizing with traditional methods. The only realistic option for most open-source developers to be rewarded for their work is with donations. It may not sound like something sustainable in the long term, but it’s a great start. Donating your funds anonymously is almost impossible. The GitHub Sponsors program even asks for your personal address, and it’s not available in every country. These platforms have a lot of restrictions and rules for donors and recipients Fees are an important factor to consider as well. Platforms like Buy me a Coffee charge a fee to the recipients, while Open Collective reserves a fee for their “Fiscal Hosts” (the project treasurer, an intermediary). Kivach’s only fees come from token transactions. For instance, if the funds are sent via Ethereum, it’s necessary to pay a small fee for gas. Of course, none of these fees are kept by Kivach. They’re only necessary to make blockchain and DAG transactions. In GBYTEs, the fees are even smaller: only 0.00001 GBYTEs (around $0.000157). A real use case: Core-js and zloirock Do you know what “Core-js” is? Probably not. But the real alarming issue is that a great number of developers and companies that use this modular JavaScript library don’t know either —or purposely choose to ignore it. And that’s not a minimal portion. Its creator and sole maintainer on GitHub, Denis Pushkarev (known as zloirock), recently some astonishing stats about it. shared As it turns out, Sites like Amazon, Yahoo, Microsoft, Instagram, Reddit, Twitch, Adobe, Pinterest, eBay, Netflix, PayPal, Binance, Spotify, and even Pornhub use this “small” tool on their sites. A search by Pushkarev showed that Core-js is present in at least 54% of the top 10,000 websites around. Core-js it’s a vital part of the infrastructure of at least half of the entire web. has To sum it up: Core-js is BIG. A lot of people depend on it, even if it’s not visible at all to the final user. Now, the saddest part of all this. Denis Pushkarev is a full-time open-source developer, with little to no rewards from Core-js. At the beginning of this project (in 2014), he received around $2,500 in monthly donations. That amount (not that big itself for a developer), decreased even more with the years. Pushkarev often works around 250 hours per month on this project, at a rate of less than $2 per hour. It’s just not fair. Now, it’s barely $400 monthly, while the downloads of Core-js keep increasing. In addition, he has real-life problems to solve, like sustaining his own family and some legal issues in Russia, which prevent him from leaving the country. So, he’s planning to make Core-js a commercial software or abandon it, unless he gets meaningful collaborations to keep the library alive. Kivach for zloirock Thanks to Kivach, zloirock (like any other developer on GitHub) So far, this repository has received around $176 in GBYTEs from several donors after the publication of the zloirock post on February 14, 2023. The maintainer can use these funds in the Obyte network, take the Counterstake Bridge to send it to BNB Chain, Polygon, or Ethereum; or exchange them for fiat money in any of the available markets. now has a donation alternative without limits and fees. Object detection is a very common task in Computer Vision. For sure it can be used in a huge amount of fields. Last couple of years we got models which really can work at realtime and have close to SOTA performance. But they can’t be the best out of the box for every task. Let’s dig into it. What’s our task? This task is just an example, idea can be used in a ton of cases. Let’s say we have a task to detect a damage on the road. Camera is inside the car and car is going pretty fast, we would like our detector to be fast too, so we took YOLOv5s. It’s good, but sometimes can have a False Positive - detect a shadow instead of a damage (or anything else which is similar looking to the damage). Or it can have a False Negative - didn’t spot a damage. We can play with confidence level to deal with that, we can add more data to training dataset, we can add more background images, we can customise architecture for our case, tinker with hyperparameters or augmentation, but all of that might not give needed results or be impractical, time consuming, expensive. What is the other way? Let’s use two models. One - for detection with low confidence level to get rid of False Negatives and second one - for classification to get rid of False Positives. Let’s discuss our architecture a little bit more. First step - use fast detector. It detects an object which should be a damage on the road, then crops it. Second step - use classifier on that crop with estimated damage and get validation if it really is a damage. It’s a good idea to try different classifiers to get best results. EfficientNet is a good start (but there are a lot of pretrained models both in PyTorch and TensorFlow). Also it is important to tune it a little bit (choose how many layers to retrain, how to rebuild the head). In this case detector can be trained only on damaged road, and classifier should be trained on damaged road, background and other things, like dirt, shadows, which could be miss predicted by detector. Why is it better? Accuracy: Main goal of our detector is to detect an object which it does pretty good. The problem is in classification part of detector model (it can classify background as a target. aka False Positive). Here comes a classifier, witch is tuned for classification in our exact case. Classifier can be trained on several labels such as target (defect) or background (dirt, shadows or other stuff). Classifier also is easier to retrain on new data (labelling and training are faster) Speed: Every frame is processed by the detector (first model), but classifier (second model) is used only at cases, when possible damage was detected. So in this case we still have real time speed as we are bottlenecked only with speed of the first model. Let’s see an example of precision and recall using this technique: So we drastically reduced False Positive rate, but lost a little bit of Recall. This technique might be especially useful in cases, where your False Positives are more critical than False Negatives, as you really don’t want your system to spam (that might easily happen with 24/7 working systems). So what we got in the end? With this architecture it is easy to get best of both worlds - fast detector and accurate classifier. You don’t have to choose whole model just because it is fast, but not really accurate. And this solution is a lot faster to deliver than customising detector architecture and retraining model from scratch, especially in real world tasks, when data is always a bottleneck. And this architecture is pretty universal. It is good, when you really want to classify your target accurate on your detection tasks. It’s also important to say that you always would want to tune your models for best performance, retrain on new data and tune hyperparameters, after you got a baseline or even a good working solution. Use Cascade Models to Get Better Speed and Accuracy in Computer Vision Tasks

In many JavaScript circles, is the Pacific Northwest’s premier JavaScript Conference. This year’s conference held on November 3rd and 4th was a hybrid event, a virtual conference progressively enhanced with in-person events in Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver, BC. CascadiaJS Dolby.io participated in the event as both event sponsor and virtual workshop host. Over the course of two days of informational talks and workshops, the Dolby team had the opportunity to meet and engage with members of the JavaScript community in our workshop and in the events virtual spaces via and on . Gather Discord The event’s organizers did an amazing job of bringing together dozens of technologies to make the experience feel like an in-person event. They provided Dolby, and the other event sponsors beautiful (and retro) 8-bit virtual conference space and booths. This gamification was surprisingly effective as an ice-breaker, and a means to draw-out engagement from even the shyest of software engineers. A Look Into Gather.Town Through the Gather platform, attendees stepped into the space with their personalized avatars and roamed around old-school using just the arrow buttons of their keyboard. The real magic happened when two or more avatars were in close proximity, and a spontaneous video and audio conference was spawned. I chatted with dozens of attendees about many subjects, and one theme was reoccurring; How this experience of walking up to a stranger while at a tech conference is strikingly familiar yet more empowering in the digital world. For some, the avatars added an extra level of initial anonymity, at first, as they could just walk past another attendee without engaging.  But, just after a few minutes, most attendees realized the real fun is in engagement in ad-hoc video conferences that connect and build community. This finding and building community theme is pervasive in the JavaScript community.  If you think about how many frameworks and open source projects there are, you soon realize there’s a similar reflection of the diversity within the community itself. Whether coming from a code school or a start-up, this diversity makes a community strong, open, and vibrant. On day two, I had the pleasure of presenting a hands-on coding workshop titled . This two-hour workshop was focused on enabling the attendees to get started building their own JavaScript video conference application with the Communications APIs. This beginner-friendly workshop showcased developing advanced features like token initialization, Dolby Voice®, screen-share, and video presentation features. The workshop was also an opportunity to invite participants to the Build The World with hackathon, empowering attendees with enough code examples and knowledge to kick start their own project. A World of Communications Apps using Advanced Audio Features Dolby.io Dolby.io Final Thoughts Teaching a remote workshop can have its own unique challenges, such as how do you know if the audience is following along or missing a step? Thankfully, we used some simple features of the Dolby-powered platform for presenting the workshop.  Instant polls and emoji became a good measure of real-time audience engagement.
