“Help I’m getting this anomaly” If your team uses any sort of chat, or you browse any coding-related sites, you’ve probably seen the “Help, I’m getting this error” messages, accompanied by some stack trace, cryptic message, or other evidence of something going wrong. In the field of neutrino physics, the OPERA experiment did something similar when they tossed about an “anomaly” up on back in 2011. They were observing neutrinos arriving at their detector in Italy roughly 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light should allow. a preprint the arXiv This “anomaly” is as close to a bug report for science as you’re likely to see. They posted the preprint primarily in order to get input from other physicists. Other physicists did offer help, writing about possible causes for the anomaly. over 60 papers The anomaly disappeared after the experiment fixed . It ended up being something extremely simple (I’m sure many software developers know that experience). And it’s unfortunate that the media hype blew the anomaly way out of proportion with after about faster-than-light neutrinos, which ultimately contributed to the . a bad connection on a cable article article project leaders resigning Coming from a physics background, I’ve noticed how similar my experience debugging code is to diagnosing an experimental anomaly. I also think about the time other physicists spent writing papers trying to explain what was ultimately something really dumb. Personally, I’d like to be more considerate of my colleagues’ time than that. Toward that end, I’d like to share this way of approaching debugging as a science experiment. Check the literature If you pick up a scientific paper and read past the abstract, you’ll notice the first section typically contains a summary of other research, citing other papers. The author has (usually) read these papers and decided that their experiment is sufficiently novel to warrant writing about. The OPERA preprint, for example, mentions that didn’t observe faster-than-light neutrinos. other experiments With search engines and resources like , I research my software bugs. Sometimes searching for the error will turn up the solution instantly. If that happens, there’s nothing novel and I don’t need to do the experiment myself. If not, playing around with keywords can often tell me if other people have seen similar problems, and help guide my own experiments. StackOverflow Set up a lab and apparatus There’s a reason a lot of science goes on in labs: it minimizes external things that can affect whatever is being studied. A lab also contains specialized apparatuses that let them observe things better than they otherwise would be able to. is an example. provides , and the detector can detect otherwise elusive neutrinos. The OPERA experiment CERN a controlled beam Similarly, I try to set up a “lab” for my code. If the buggy code is part of some larger system, I’ll try to set up a minimal environment that still allows it to exhibit the bug. Things like VMs and virtual environments are great for this. This gives me more control over its context and inputs. To this, I add instruments like debuggers and detailed logging. These let me look at the bug more easily and with greater detail than in the “wild”. Once the lab’s set up, I need to build the apparatus. This involves bringing in enough of the relevant code and data to reproduce the bug. I also need to set it up to test the things I want to test. For example, if my research (or intuition) suggests a hypothesis that a particular input might be a problem, then I need a straightforward way to manipulate that input in my lab. Fortunately, it’s much easier to rebuild a software apparatus than most physical ones, so I can start quickly with something minimal, and add more controls when hypotheses demand. Hypothesis, experiment, iterate This is the heart of science, and also very useful when debugging software. Many small experiments get done to explain an anomaly or solve a bug. OPERA, for example, considered how things like the time-distribution of their neutrino beam could affect their measurement. Similarly, in software, I’ve usually have some hypotheses for what’s causing the bug that I can test. Using the lab I’ve set up, I run an experiment to test a hypothesis. Maybe my first hypothesis is wrong (and it frequently is). In that case, I move on to the next one. Maybe in testing it, I learn something new about the system, and that leads to a different or more refined hypothesis or a new experiment I can run. I keep running experiments and testing hypotheses until I understand what’s going on. This is ultimately what science is. We don’t simply do things until they work; we do things to understand what causes something to work. Simply making the error go away isn’t enough. If I don’t understand what caused it, I can’t know if I completely fixed it, or if there are other circumstances under which it might appear. I also don’t know how to avoid coding up the same bug again in the future. And in some rare cases, I can’t figure it out. Maybe it’s actually a bug in some other system that I can’t experiment on. Maybe it’s something buried deep in code that’s way outside my expertise. In that case, it’s a true anomaly, at least to me. Publish In , the end result of an experiment is a paper. This is a way to share whatever the experiment revealed to the broader community. science After debugging , I don’t write papers, but I do publish the results in one way or another. For example, if I’ve found the cause of the bug, I might “publish” it by fixing it and putting the fix out for code review. In science, this would be . If the bug’s due to some bad assumption I made about the system, I can “publish” this with documentation. In science, the equivalent might be a paper about . software a paper about discovering something a new theory If it’s one of those bugs that I can’t figure out, then I can “publish” by asking for help. I hope I’ve convinced you that this is actually pretty close to an “anomaly” paper in science. Even the structure of a good bug report is similar: I give context and outline what research I’ve done. Then I explain my experimental apparatus so people can reproduce it. And I explain what experiments I’ve done and things I’ve observed while trying to understand my anomaly. This gives the community the ability to do their own experiments to try to understand it. Final Remarks Personally, I find this scientific approach to debugging helpful. Taking an iterative, hypothesis-and-evidence-based approach helps me in terms of actually getting bugs solved. Along the way, I often learn new things. Similarly, science has given us all sorts of practical things, while also expanding our knowledge of the universe. I don’t mean to imply my approach is the only one, or the best one for all circumstances. There are almost certainly cases where net productivity, at least in the short term, benefits from a fix made without understanding. After all, we can put to use without fully understanding how they work. But we still experiment and try to learn, and odds are those experiments will pay off eventually. superconductors The OPERA collaboration was actually very thorough in trying to understand their own anomaly before releasing the preprint. Despite that, the project leaders ended up resigning, and many people felt embarrassed (although the hyped-up press coverage deserves much of the blame). Finally, I also hope the OPERA example reminds you that even smart people can miss stupid bugs. The next time I “publish” a dumb bug report, please don’t be too harsh on me.

Sui Turns One: Debut Year Of Growth and Tech Breakthroughs Puts Sui At Forefront Of Web3

Coincidentally, in the morning before the announcement of the eagerly awaited results of , I had the opportunity to sit down with a self-proclaimed “data nerd” and innovator in the space, . Known for his expertise in impact verification, a key theme of our conversation, his name is associated with projects like , , and . Let’s dive in. Optimism’s Retro PGF Round 3 Carl Cervone Open Source Observer Hypercerts Gitcoin Protocol Labs Carl, what are you working on these days? Right now, my main project is Open Source Observer—it’s the first we’re launching from a new company called Kariba Labs. We aim to find new ways to measure the impact of different open-source software contributions. Today, we have a pretty well-established infrastructure for funding public goods in the real world, which includes everything from taxes to donating to nonprofits or companies engaging in social responsibility. But as more public goods are moving online and are influenced by digital technology, there’s a need for new structures to fund the essential public goods that support our digital ecosystems. Naturally, one of the challenges is the decentralized nature of these public goods. They aren’t confined to any jurisdiction or municipality, and their contributors and users are global and diverse. So, how do we identify what impact looks like, how do we fund it, and how do we reward the people contributing the most to it? That’s the puzzle we’re trying to solve. So, what does the digital public goods funding space look like today? There’s a clear focus on public goods in the Ethereum ecosystem, covering everything from educational efforts to UX to more technically sophisticated parts of the core infrastructure stack. Interestingly, this desire spans across actors—individuals, with their own treasuries, even the leading Layer 2s like Optimism and Arbitrum, and of course Ethereum itself through the Ethereum Foundation. But even if extremely valuable, public goods don’t tend to have traditional revenue generation models. That’s why it’s necessary for the network to come up with different ways to fund these public goods and for the community to embrace these efforts by  saying: “We value these public goods, and we need to fund them well.” DAOs In practice, this means we have funding sources here and deserving projects there and a range of funding allocation mechanisms bridging the two. On one end of the spectrum, there are more traditional structures like RFPs and grant-making cycles, where a foundation might say, “We have a certain amount of money to give out; you can apply.” Then, a team reviews each project, decides if they like it, and if so, awards funding. On the other end of the spectrum are purely bottom-up, community-driven processes such as Gitcoin Grants. With Gitcoin, anyone can say, “We are a project; here’s our community, and we'd like to compete for some funding.” Every quarter, there are matching pools, and the amount of funding a project receives is determined by the number of votes it gets based on a specific formula. This approach has enabled hundreds, even thousands, of projects to receive funding every quarter. Many are small-scale, but some have grown from part-time projects to full-time employment for their teams. It's exciting because creating ways for people to work on public goods, especially those without traditional revenue models but that create immense value, addresses some of our biggest challenges. You essentially transform a role traditionally held by the government into a thriving, decentralized community. All of this ties in closely with impact verification, right? Exactly. And that’s why we need a three-sided marketplace. There are the funders, and then there are the projects. But for this to work, we need the third piece: the party that will measure which products have the most impact. Ideally, funders should be able to show that their investment has been impactful—that they’re getting some kind of positive ROI on the funds they’re giving out. Otherwise, they might just give the money away without considering who it goes to. Impact tracking has traditionally been dominated by experts and auditors who are really good at coming in and taking a proprietary approach to measuring a project’s success. While there are undeniable benefits to having subject matter experts, this approach doesn't completely align with our goal of decentralizing public goods funding. With digital public goods, we need a mix of grassroots, community-driven instruments complemented by expert insights to ensure impactful use of funds. So, there’s this fascinating landscape opening up where we could democratize access to impact measurement. One of the strategies is to increase data availability on projects and their impact. We can also expand surface areas for those participating to include users, open-source contributors, downstream developers, and so on. And it’s essential to simplify the process by having experts translate their guidance into frameworks that can be replicated or models for people to work and experiment with. So, we need to build out this measurement and analysis piece to achieve a functioning impact market. Otherwise, we’ll have top-notch funding mechanisms and funding pools, but there won’t be any impact to show for it. What are some ways to build up this measurement piece? Between these extremes, there are various possible configurations. The initial step is deciding the desired distribution shape—how flat or skewed it should be. After establishing this, the next step involves combining data analysis with community input to assess projects and determine their impact. For open-source software, certain aspects are straightforward to identify using data. You can easily spot projects with little to no activity or those that only become active around funding announcements. Similarly, highly active and popular projects with diverse contributors can be quickly identified. These evaluations are important, though many systems don’t currently utilize this data effectively. The goal is to get there. The tricky part is dealing with the middle category, with significant variation among projects. A single metric or analysis method probably won't do; what's needed is to clearly define the specific impacts and measurement methods, followed by a thorough analysis of the data to figure out which projects are doing the best in their respective areas. This stage might also require the community's involvement or insights about these projects from well-informed people for the final evaluations. I imagine reviewing each project and its impact can overwhelm the everyday user. How can we make this better? That's precisely the issue we're addressing with Open Source Observer. The data is out there—accessible through Block Explorers, , and other platforms. However, having access doesn't necessarily mean it's straightforward to compile or format the data for every type of analysis needed. When someone claims they've made a positive impact, this can be broken down into several dimensions: who did the work, when it was done, a description of the work, and the resulting event. Hypercerts introduces a way to give funders ownership over these claims. Hypercerts This “ownership right” could mean simply being able to boast about funding on social media, or it could translate into financial returns, access to exclusive events, or membership privileges. The idea is to incentivize early funding by offering future benefits, which could be monetary, recognition-based, or other forms of social clout. Hypercerts captures this data and uses an ERC-1155 token to denote ownership of these impact claims. Since launching a year ago, we've seen various interesting use cases emerge, from climate to journalism. It's still early, but we're eager to see how these initiatives develop.
