Day #1 at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco and Goal #1 With the two founders of Letz, and we got early in the am to Pier48 and arranged the booth in the AI sector of the Startup Alley. Since they already had pre-arranged meetings with investors, my main responsibility was to represent Letz and engage with participants at our booth. It was an experience to be able to story-tell and ‘sell the product’ to maybe more than 1000 people that stopped by the booth that day. One encounter made my day… A lady stopped by the booth and said that she knows Lucy (Letz productivity assistant and 1st character), because her boyfriend keeps on talking with ‘her’. Soon after I learned that this lady, April, works at a Chinese/US VC fund that is investing in AI startups in Series A. That was the right moment for me to share that we are raising up to 1 million US dollars, to which she replied:” Oh, you are raising too little. Our series A is from 3–4 million!”. And I told April that we are here to discuss details, so I immediately connected her with the founders, so they could take the next steps. Nino Martin There is an interest of US VC’s for European startups. But, do (Eastern) European startups get valuated less in comparison to US based startups? There are many factors that will impact the valuation, but probably best thing before raising a round is to triple check your valuation. That’s your company that you give equity away from! Lesson learned: One of my favorite TV Series is Silicon Valley (the geek in me), being able to meet Jared IRL (in real life) was a moment that will be highlighted in my memory for a very long time! Fun Fact: Day 2 and Goal 2: Entrepreneurs in Residence During the three day conference, I was able to reconnect with friends from different startup communities, as well as to meet many new people. As soon as I shared the Entrepreneur-in-Residence program as an opportunity, they were all interested to dive into more details. The Western Balkan region for the vast majority was an unknown ‘startup’ territory and they didn’t have any idea of what is happening there and how developed the eco-systems actually are. Hopefully many of them will sign up, complete the matching process and come to our four countries to selflessly share their know-how and practical experience. . At the moment you might not be aware of what that could mean or what could turn into. In the long run, everything will make perfect sense. This transatlantic bridge can be strengthened with entrepreneurial support and exchange of expertise. Lesson learned: Share existing opportunities with as much people as possible A guy with the exact same last name as mine approached me, stating this fact. That was a pleasant surprise, to meet someone like that 10 000 km away from where you’re both from. is a young and aspiring entrepreneur with a potential to become an EiR in the following period. Fun fact: Dimitrije Day 3 and Goal 3: Visiting Googleplex Some may think that you can show up at Googleplex and roam around. Thanks to my friend and her connections, we were introduced to who works at Google. This is how the three of us were able to get a guided tour in the complex that is probably as big as my hometown. It was excellent to learn more about the speedy growth of Google and to see how it looks like to work for a huge corporation. There is everything that a person would need at any given time. Marilyn Pablo It’s a lot of hard work when you start small to become a giant. Then again, with a well set platform, right timing, supporting system, creating a company culture that retains Millennials you can come close to becoming this giant that Google is now. Lesson learned: At least for 3 hours I felt like I am a Google employee, part of the Google family, grabbing a coffee in one of the snack rooms, riding a Google bike around the campus, talking with employees… It is a surreal feeling, to be at the HQ of something I use in my everyday life! Fun fact: Silicon Valley lesson learned: Maybe I had high expectations for San Francisco and Silicon Valley in general, that influenced my overall experience. I was shocked to witness this huge discrepancy of extremely rich people and so many homeless people, in the same streets, in the same urban city… it was heartbreaking. Spending some time in Silicon Valley, SanFran… got me to this realization… Mainly when it comes to #3: Recognize that business and society are together — not in separate worlds! Hopefully by next time I’m there, some things will be changed, for the better… Cheers

A last-minute tech conference invite I speak to a lot of companies about the interesting challenges they are facing. I try to share some of the interesting stories and takeaways, especially if they can help other founders and GTM teams. A couple of weeks ago I got a call from the founder of Anywaypay (they’re basically building Linktree for payment options) and they presented me with an interesting challenge. They had just gotten a last-minute booth at an upcoming AI conference in New York and they weren’t sure what to do. “That’s great!” I said. “What’s the issue?” The founder explained that there were actually several issues… "Well, first of all - we don’t have an AI-centric product… and we only have until the end of the day to create marketing assets for our booth… And we don’t have any swag to giveaway… And we don’t think they have the right equipment there to allow us to demo the product in a compelling way… So what do you think we can we do??” Now, this founder is a smart guy. He knew this would be a challenge, but he also knew that many people from the local tech ecosystem would be there, so he didn’t want to pass up an opportunity to have a booth on the conference floor. He wanted my help to come up with a quick, creative plan. Defining a conference success metric The first thing we did together was define what a “successful” conference would look like. More often than not, founders and tech executives blindly attend conferences without giving much thought to what they want to get out of them. Without clear goals, it’s impossible to come up with a plan for achieving them. And BTW, for whoever out there needs to hear it - no, the number of free socks, t-shirts, and AirPod cases you collect is not a legit success metric. Here’s how we thought about it: This company is an early-stage startup with a B2C app. For many of their users, the adoption of the app was a “here and now”, quick decision. People usually resonate with the problem they’re solving and then onboard quickly with the free mobile app. So we decided that in the context of the tech conference showroom, a good way to measure success would to look at the number of people engaging at their booth. The more people they could attract, the more people they could talk to and convince to try Anywaypay. If they walked around the room and tried to pitch people on Anywaypay however, we thought folks might find it off-putting and out of context. After all, they’re not an AI tool and this was an AI-centric conference. So we needed to figure out a way to get people to come to the booth and naturally talk to the founding team. A creative place to promote our product The plan sounded good in our heads and on paper, but it was easier said than done. We still needed to come up with a way to achieve the desired results. Making tactical matters more complicated was the fact that all the promotional real estate in the conference hall was taken. Even if we could get a small piece of it on short notice, we had no time to produce an asset that would stand out in a crowd. We needed a cheap, creative, unique way to grab people’s attention and attract them to our booth. We needed a setting that wasn’t already saturated with other company marketing materials and we needed to make sure our materials were cheap and quick to produce. With these constraints firmly in place, I proposed the only solution I could think of: The bathroom, of course. I reasoned that the bathroom was the one place where everyone at the conference would visit at least once throughout the day. I assumed that no one else at the conference was using that space to advertise their product. If we could take advantage of this opportunity to grab people’s attention at a time and in a place where they least expected it - we had a shot at making the kind of impression we were aiming for. So we went ahead and printed a couple of simple flyers on regular printer paper. They included company branding, a QR code to download the app, and some edgy wording that seemed bathroom-worthy: Someone owes you money? Don’t get pissed. Just get Anywaypay. Don’t piss away your cash. Get Anywaypay and keep track of who owes you. When the founder got to the conference hall the next day, he snuck into the bathrooms and hung up the signs above the urinals: Success! Once the conference hall began to fill with participants, it didn’t take long to see a positive return on our investment. Our bathroom signage made people chuckle (the team visited the bathroom a few extra times to check). And most importantly, people came over to the booth to say hello and give the team a high-five for the clever marketing campaign (I hope they all washed their hands first… 🙂). And many of those booth visitors installed the app and shared it with their friends and colleagues. Our effort was a success, and it didn’t end there. The experiment continued to bear fruits even after the conference was over. The team received a number of complimentary messages and someone even posted about it on Reddit! What we learned This experiment turned out well. But the main reason for sharing this is to highlight some of the key learnings that might be useful for other startups and marketing teams. So here’s a quick summary of what we learned from this experience that might be applicable to you: Setting “extreme” constraints can force you to come up with creative solutions
Conferences can be effective promotional environments, but only if you define your success metrics clearly and then make a plan for hitting them

How To Rock a Tech Conference With $0 and No Prep Time

Suppose you’ve picked up an Android phone on the street and you saw the 4 apps above. Can you guess the profile of the phone user? Your guess is likely to be that the user is a ‘she’, her religion is Muslim, perhaps looking for a job recently, and she’s either a mother or someone who is into virtual cats. Yes, in essence, that’s how Facebook profiles you if you own these apps in your Android phone. Now, let’s talk about the ‘how’. Cut to the chase Facebook is able to track you because Android developers of 3rd party apps (example: Indeed Job Search) implement Facebook’s oftware evelopment it (SDK). S D K is a collection of tools that eases the creation of software. By using Facebook SDK, developers can do advanced analytics without the need to code it from scratch. SDK is like a Swiss Army Knife. With it, you can start your job immediately instead of having to build your own scissors, knife, corkscrew etc. SDK This article is written based on the research conducted by Frederike Kaltheuner and Christopher Weatherhead. The official study can be found . here here Purpose of this article I wrote this article with the end in mind to educate the general public on how these tech companies collect our data and how we can protect our digital privacy. My job is to “de-jargonise” the research, not to be 100% technically accurate (although I will do my best to be). Just a head’s up, I am not an expert in the data privacy domain; I just consider myself more of an intermediate developer. Outline Anatomy of the Google Play Store How the tech works (without going too much on the tech) What’s our defense? Anatomy of the Google Play Store According to , research done by the University of Oxford has suggested that approximately 42.55% of the free apps in the Google Play Store could share data with Facebook. Privacy International Out of the 42.55%, this study picked 34 apps, based on the fact that they have either a huge number of installations, or they involve sensitive information such as religion and health, or they are simply utility apps (You know, torchlight, QR code scanner, fart sound etc). Here’s a zoomed-in version. Found any app that’s installed on your phone right now? Out of the 34 apps, over 61% of them automatically transfer data to Facebook . the moment a user opens the app “…the moment a user opens the app”. That means, there is no chance for the app to ask permission from the user to grant/deny the sharing of personal data. How the tech works (without going too much on the tech) App #1: Kayak Take Kayak for example. If you are unsure what’s Kayak, it’s a travel metasearch engine. It allows you to search for flights, hotels, and cars if you are going on holiday. You tap on the application icon. Action 1: The application is initialized and the following data is sent to Facebook . What happens: immediately The highlighted word stands for anonymous id. Basically, you are identified as . Facebook does not know your actual name, and that doesn’t matter. There’s a term for that; it’s called shadow profiling. “anon_id” XZdfd5f00f-9271–4e82-a8ce-6cea1d38b6d3 It’s comical to know that Kayak confidently declares this message “Don’t worry, we’ll never share anything without your permission” at its login screen even though it shares data the moment you open the app. In Kayak’s defense, the SDK is built by Facebook, so Kayak should not shoulder the entire blame here. To be fair, Kayak no longer shares data instantaneously with Facebook as of this writing. You search for a flight with 1 economy passenger from London (Gatwick) to Tokyo on the 2nd December, returning on the 5th The search is initialized and the app sends the following to Facebook. Action 2: What happens: In a span of a minute or two, Facebook took notice of this random person who wants to travel from London to Tokyo in December and he’s traveling alone. This data is harvested from a single person with a single device at a single search. Imagine you close the Kayak app and switch to (say) “Amazon”. Facebook knows that you have these 2 apps and it will probably start to put you into categories like “preparing for holiday” or “affinity for winter clothes”. The bottom line is that Facebook harvests billions of data points every single day, even from users who made a conscious effort to stay away from Facebook. That’s how creepy it is. What’s our defense? Stay in a cave. I’m joking. Well, half-joking. The best defense is, of course, getting yourself off the internet. That means, no Facebook, no Google search, no YouTube, don’t hang out with friends who love to take selfies, and buy airline tickets at the booth. But we all know that that’s kind of impractical at this day and age. But there are certain ways to limit the reach of these tech companies into your personal life. Here are 5 suggestions. 1. Reset your advertising identifier (Very simple) Every device has an advertising identifier (aka ad id). You can’t stop Facebook or Google from tracking you but you can make their tracking difficult by frequently resetting your ad id. If you reset it, in theory, Facebook and Google algorithms will view you as a different person in your next online activity. Android Phone: Go to settings > Google > Ads > Reset advertising identifier iPhone: Go to settings > Privacy > Advertising > Reset advertising identifier 2. Limit ad personalization (Very simple) In theory, this should limit the amount of data collected by the companies. However, this study showed that we can end up sharing more data to companies if we limit ad personalization. But I will not go into the details of that. Android: Go to Settings > Google > Ads > Opt Out of Personalized Advertising iPhone: Go to settings > Privacy > Advertising > turn on ‘Limit Ad Tracking’ 3. Review permissions (Very annoying) Did you notice that apps these days have been asking for permissions before you carry out a simple task like importing a photo or opening a map? Yeah, it’s irritating but it’s crucial. This allows you to have greater control of your privacy. Not perfect, but at least it helps to a certain extent. 4. Use Brave browser to surf & use DuckDuckGo to search (Simple) (as opposed to Google Chrome) is a web browser which focuses a lot more on data privacy. Brave (as opposed to Google Search) is a search engine which distinguishes itself from other search engines by not profiling its users. DuckDuckGo 5. Educate yourself / your parents / your children on how the Internet works (Not so simple) Education is the most powerful weapon. There are tons of articles and YouTube videos explaining how computers and network works; go read them up. However, if the content is too complex, especially for the older generations and the newcomers (aka your children), you can check out . It’s a board game that’s developed to teach cybersecurity and internet piracy without computers. Potato Pirates -Enter The Spudnet Closing Remarks After the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data scandal, people are starting to take notice of the importance of digital privacy and the government has been implementing measures after measures to curb the big companies from being overly intrusive in terms of data collection. One prominent move is the implementation of the (commonly known as GDPR) in the EU. It basically sets a compliance framework that companies need to comply with. While it’s heartening to know that the government has made progress to protect us, we need to do our part as well. General Data Protection Regulation I hope this article is useful to you. This past summer, we talked to over a hundred recruiters about when students do and don’t stand out. Tis’ the season of for all the students across the US. The time where the smell of freshly printed resumes is in the air as thousands scurry from booth to booth trying to schmooze with their potential future. It is also the time when red bull is the only drink that pairs well with cuddling next to the computer screen while updating a resume that’s been collecting dust in the Documents directory. career fairs You spin enough times, you get the job. You try to think hard about how to stand out at a career fair. But let us be real, you are more worried about the homework due tomorrow because you have been procrastinating. Career fairs seem like a magic lottery. You spin enough times, you get the job. Well, we can’t tell you stop drinking red bull or procrastinating, but we can tell you how you can stand out. Drum roll please…the secret to standing out is to ask engaging questions. I got you. Didn’t I? Wait, what? What does that even mean? Seems so obvious, but here’s why it’s not: About 50% that we talked to said they encountered this situation multiple times. Some students don’t bring their resumes. recruiters Can you imagine going to Google and asking them what Google is? If you talk to a company, do your research. No excuse. Some students talk to recruiters and ask them what the company does. Hold on, . Whenever you hear a recruiter responding to you with “you can look on our website to find xyz”, then you probably asked one of these questions. Some students ask questions they can find the answers to on the company’s website. let me google that for you As much as recruiters want to give students benefit of the doubt, it is surprising how often some students do not even have the basics down. At the end of the day, a recruiter is going to talk hundreds of students — all of you will have similar backgrounds. After all, you *do* go to the same school and take the *same* classes. So beyond the basics, how do you stand out? The best way to stand out is to make yourself memorable in the 2–5 minutes you are talking to an engineer (if you are a eng fair) or a recruiter. By engaging, I mean engaging to the person you are talking to. People love talking about themselves and their company, so if you can leave a conversation making that person feel great, then they have a great impression about you and are more likely to remember you. All recruiters we talked to had a couple of memorable experiences talking to students who later became employees. If I’m interested in [Mobile dev, AI, ML, etc], what are some cool initiatives the company is taking in these areas? How much independence/autonomy/ownership do I get as an intern? Tech companies love this question because it signals that you are interested in being proactive. Before you end your conversation, ask when you would expect to hear back from them.
