The coming of the metaverse and Web3 is widely billed as the next Internet revolution, but the promise of immersive cyberspace is no longer just a fantasy. Even though a consistent definition of the metaverse still escapes us, most agree that it represents a network of virtual, 3D worlds powered to some extent by augmented and virtual reality to build digital economies and social connections. The lure of the metaverse is so strong that Facebook’s parent company Meta recently committed $10 billion towards building its own take on the idea. The likes of The Sandbox and Decentraland meanwhile have already made strong progress with their own, decentralized metaverses built on the Ethereum blockchain. They might be the biggest names in the metaverse space but they’re far from the only players aiming to fulfill Web3’s destiny. Of the many competing metaverses that have been attracting attention, two, in particular, stand out: , which is the first native metaverse built on the Polkadot blockchain Bit.Country , one of the most popular online games platforms in the world that boasts over 40 million daily active users and hundreds of immersive, user-generated 3D worlds. Roblox What is The Bit.Country Metaverse? Trying to set itself apart from rivals such as The Sandbox and Decentraland, Bit.Country bills itself as the platform for everyone to come and create their own metaverse by building an immersive 3D world complete with a map, games, stores, economics, and governance. Bit.Country is built atop of the , defined as a metaverse version of the Ethereum blockchain with lower gas fees. Metaverse.Network It was built using the framework on top of the . Substrate Polkadot ecosystem On Bit.Country anyone can use the platform to invest in their own virtual world, complete with an economy based on cryptocurrency that rewards anyone who visits and spends time within it. Brands who build or launch decentralized apps on Bit.Country can use them as a medium (a kind of app store) to interact with visitors and showcase just about any kind of product or service and make sales on the platform. Individuals can build their own metaverses too for their friends, family or followers, with full control over the worlds they intend to create. What is The Roblox Metaverse? The Roblox metaverse is a rising phenomenon that has seen multiple brands leverage the Roblox development engine to build games encompassing promotions that overlap with the real world. Most brands within the Roblox metaverse design games that promote real-life products and events. For example, a movie producer might build a game that advertises an upcoming film and perhaps, also promote other brands outside of the entertainment industry that it partners with. This has resulted in Roblox seeping into mainstream culture, working with brands such as Nike and franchises such as Stranger Things. Roblox has also incorporated these brands' products and worlds into various immersive games. How to Build on Bit.Country Building a metaverse on Bit.Country is open to anyone at all, though it must be noted that the virtual land within its Continuum is not infinite and is in high demand. The can be thought of as a map of metaverses, or bit countries, with a limited number of blocks that represent each one. Continuum While the future shape of the Continuum will be driven by Bit.Country’s community, there is a total supply of 100,000 land blocks available, so there can only be that many bit countries. Within each land block, the virtual space is subdivided into 100 land units, where individual buildings and environments are based. A group of land units is known as an “estate”. Each bit country is represented by a small block in the Continuum with a unique coordinate. This block represents the essence of the community and is home to all of the content within that individual metaverse. The land units within each one can be independently owned, bought and sold on third-party marketplaces, represented by an NFT. Within each land unit, the owner (landlord) is able to build assets, sell products and services, display NFTs and host events - pretty much anything they can think of, in fact. Bit.Country is a fully decentralized metaverse which means landlords have complete freedom to customize their land units. They can use predetermined block themes provided by Bit.Country or by third-party developers, then decide on the features and images, style of the ground and walls of the buildings, the size and shape of the block and much more. The idea is that each block should be based on a topic, with whatever content is built inside corresponding to that topic. Visitors to the Bit.Country Continuum are free to visit any of the blocks they wish and explore all the lands within them, interacting with other visitors and events. To acquire a new block and start building, budding landlords will have to purchase it at an auction. Bear in mind however that the “Good Neighborhood Protocol” gives existing block owners a say in what neighbors they’d like to have, so they can avoid having a bit country with inappropriate content located close to their own. Once a landlord has built up his own block, he or she can create or import another cryptocurrency that can be used to buy products and services and incentivize others to participate within the community and its governance. Landlords have full autonomy to decide upon the incentive rules, which might involve creating content for the metaverse, hosting events or something else. It’s worth mentioning that Bit.Country’s official NUUM cryptocurrency token and NFTs are a critical element of its metaverse. NUUM is not only used to buy items but also as a governance token. Users can mint their own NFTs on the platform and exhibit them in virtual galleries. They can also be traded through the Bit.Country NFT marketplace, which is a decentralized auction platform. How to Build on Roblox Roblox’s concept of the metaverse is quite a bit different from the more typical model followed by Bit.Country. As a games development platform, Roblox’s virtual worlds are basically all a kind of video game, in which players must complete various tasks to win in-game items. For instance, The Nikeland game built by none other than Nike involves players competing in various sports activities such as racing. If the player wins a race they get to unlock exclusive Nike-themed items that can be used to customize their avatar with branded clothing. Another example is Stranger Things, which built a carbon 3D copy of the Starcourt Mall that featured so prominently in Season Three of the hit show. Players get to run around the shopping center, exploring various locations seen in the show and collecting various themed items and hats. Building a game on Roblox is actually fairly simple thanks to the comprehensive power of its development platform that’s based on the Lua scripting language. Roblox Studio Roblox Studio provides hundreds of “templates” for different game genres, be it platform games, shoot ‘em ups, racing games, driving games, etc. For instance the Line Runner template is perfect for anyone wanting to create a Super Mario style side-scrolling platform game. The next step is to design the graphics and layout or map, depending on the game genre. Then the characters, monsters and obstacles, items, weapons and so on. While Roblox allows anyone with minimal skills to build their own game-based virtual world, the potential audience of that metaverse is likely restricted to games players only. Still, there are monetization opportunities available. A recent example is the Pet Simulator X title, which has started selling themed NFTs on its platform. That said, most metaverses on the platform do not take advantage of this capability yet and remain focused on advertising brands only. No doubt, that’s partly due to the lack of an official Roblox cryptocurrency. THE TEACHING OF JESUS THE TEACHING OF JESUS It was while Augustus Cæsar, the first of the Emperors, was reigning in Rome that Jesus who is the Christ of Christianity was born in Judea. In his name a religion was to arise which was destined to become the official religion of the entire Roman Empire. Now it is on the whole more convenient to keep history and theology apart. A large proportion of the Christian world believes that Jesus was an incarnation of that God of all the Earth whom the Jews first recognized. The historian, if he is to remain historian, can neither accept nor deny that interpretation. Materially Jesus appeared in the likeness of a man, and it is as a man that the historian must deal with him. He appeared in Judea in the reign of Tiberius Cæsar. He was a prophet. He preached after the fashion of the preceding Jewish prophets. He was a man of about thirty, and we are in the profoundest ignorance of his manner of life before his preaching began. Our only direct sources of information about the life and teaching of Jesus are the four Gospels. All four agree in giving us a picture of a very definite personality. One is obliged to say, “Here was a man. This could not have been invented.” But just as the personality of Gautama Buddha has been distorted and obscured by the stiff squatting figure, the gilded idol of later Buddhism, so one feels that the lean and strenuous personality of Jesus is much wronged by the unreality and conventionality that a mistaken reverence has imposed upon his figure in modern Christian art. Jesus was a penniless teacher, who wandered about the dusty sun-bit country of Judea, living upon casual gifts of food; yet he is always represented clean, combed and sleek, in spotless raiment, erect and with something motionless about him as though he was gliding through the air. This alone has made him unreal and incredible to many people who cannot distinguish the core of the story from the ornamental and unwise additions of the unintelligently devout. We are left, if we do strip this record of these difficult accessories, with the figure of a being, very human, very earnest and passionate, capable of swift anger, and teaching a new and simple and profound doctrine—namely, the universal loving Fatherhood of God and the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. He was clearly a person—to use a common phrase—of intense personal magnetism. He attracted followers and filled them with love and courage. Weak and ailing people were heartened and healed by his presence. Yet he was probably of a delicate physique, because of the swiftness with which he died under the pains of crucifixion. There is a tradition that he fainted when, according to the custom, he was made to bear his cross to the place of execution. He went about the country for three years spreading his doctrine and then he came to Jerusalem and was accused of trying to set up a strange kingdom in Judea; he was tried upon this charge, and crucified together with two thieves. Long before these two were dead his sufferings were over. The doctrine of the Kingdom of Heaven, which was the main teaching of Jesus, is certainly one of the most revolutionary doctrines that ever stirred and changed human thought. It is small wonder if the world of that time failed to grasp its full significance, and recoiled in dismay from even a half apprehension of its tremendous challenges to the established habits and institutions of mankind. For the doctrine of the Kingdom of Heaven, as Jesus seems to have preached it, was no less than a bold and uncompromising demand for a complete change and cleansing of the life of our struggling race, an utter cleansing, without and within. To the gospels the reader must go for all that is preserved of this tremendous teaching; here we are only concerned with the jar of its impact upon established ideas. The Jews were persuaded that God, the one God of the whole world, was a righteous god, but they also thought of him as a trading god who had made a bargain with their Father Abraham about them, a very good bargain indeed for them, to bring them at last to predominance in the earth. With dismay and anger they heard Jesus sweeping away their dear securities. God, he taught, was no bargainer; there were no chosen people and no favourites in the Kingdom of Heaven. God was the loving father of all life, as incapable of showing favour as the universal sun. And all men were brothers—sinners alike and beloved sons alike—of this divine father. In the parable of the Good Samaritan Jesus cast scorn upon that natural tendency we all obey, to glorify our own people and to minimize the righteousness of other creeds and other races. In the parable of the labourers he thrust aside the obstinate claim of the Jews to have a special claim upon God. All whom God takes into the kingdom, he taught, God serves alike; there is no distinction in his treatment, because there is no measure to his bounty. From all moreover, as the parable of the buried talent witnesses, and as the incident of the widow’s mite enforces, he demands the utmost. There are no privileges, no rebates and no excuses in the Kingdom of Heaven. All men belonged to the kingdom; all their possessions belonged to the kingdom; the righteous life for all men, the only righteous life, was the service of God’s will with all that we had, with all that we were. Again and again he denounced private riches and the reservation of any private life. The whole tenor of the opposition to him and the circumstances of his trial and execution show clearly that to his contemporaries he seemed to propose plainly, and did propose plainly, to change and fuse and enlarge all human life. In view of what he plainly said, is it any wonder that all who were rich and prosperous felt a horror of strange things, a swimming of their world at his teaching? He was dragging out all the little private reservations they had made from social service into the light of a universal religious life. He was like some terrible moral huntsman digging mankind out of the snug burrows in which they had lived hitherto. In the white blaze of this kingdom of his there was to be no property, no privilege, no pride and precedence; no motive indeed and no reward but love. Is it any wonder that men were dazzled and blinded and cried out against him? Even his disciples cried out when he would not spare them the light. THE TEACHING OF JESUS

For the 28th part of Unhashed, I reached out to Emma Cui, Founding Partner & Chief Executive Officer of , and discussed the various aspects of VC funding in the web3 space. LongHash Ventures Hi Emma! Welcome to Unhashed. What is your career story, how did you venture into the crypto space, and what led you to work on LongHash Ventures? I first bought Ether in early 2016. I joined crypto full-time in late 2017 when my co-founder Shi Khai, whom I met at McKinsey, and I decided to launch LongHash Ventures together in Singapore. We started as a Web3-focused accelerator, which has now grown into a leading Web3 early-stage VC fund and accelerator in Asia. From day 1, the values that Web3 stands for –  transparency, true ownership of data and assets enabled by distributed ledger technology and cryptography, trustless and permissionless exchange of assets – resonated strongly with us. We want to build LongHash Ventures into a platform that not only invests in the future of Web3 but also venture-builds and value-adds to projects in a Web3 native way. Crypto and Web3 startups drew nearly $32 billion in funding from the VC market last year. Can you explain this sudden surge of interest for the web3 space and what key factors do you think are driving VCs to invest in this space? The Web3 revolution started in 2008 when Bitcoin was first invented. Since then, we’ve been through a few cycles of boom and bust, whereby each cycle brings in new innovation, more adoption and a clearer understanding of what Web3 could be. So I wouldn’t call it a sudden surge of interest. The factors driving this wave of adoption are: Real use cases have emerged: Defi, GameFi, Metaverse, NFTs, etc. Each vertical has brought in a diverse set of users, investors, and stakeholders. The underlying technology has matured: Various layers across the entire Web3 stack matured at rapid speed. Layers 0/1/2, middleware, marketplaces - they have all come a long way. Traditional players started to adopt/invest in this space: For instance, El Salvador has made Bitcoin legal tender, and traditional and Web3 native VCs have raised billions of dollars to allocate to the space. Okay! A slightly controversial question here. Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, said last year that when VCs are involved, Web3 cannot truly belong to its users. What is your opinion on this? I don’t agree with Jack Dorsey’s view. Decentralization is a journey and I don’t think we are even close to the end. Compared to the Web2 model, where ownership of startups remains within a small circle of insiders (team and VCs) until they become publicly listed, Web 3 model has given the retail and the community an incredible opportunity to participate and gain ownership of the projects that they use and like early on. And this ownership doesn’t have to be obtained through capital contribution. It can be earned via proof of contribution. For example, users contribute to the early liquidity pool of a decentralized exchange, or test out the product and provide feedback, or spread the word and attract other users. Blockchain networks are essentially permissionless, allowing any developer to build and launch projects on their own. So, in this context, what do you think is the importance of accelerators in web3? Are they pivotal to the success of emergent startups? I think Web3 calls for a different breed of accelerators. They are of paramount importance to a protocol’s success because they focus on bootstrapping the ecosystem for the protocol’s growth in its early days. At LongHash Ventures, we invest in the underlying protocol token, accelerate early-stage projects and bootstrap the ecosystem. We actively participate in governance and take a long-term view to support the growth of the ecosystem. A specific example is our involvement with the Polkadot ecosystem since 2019: We invested in Polkadot’s private sale in 2019 and subsequently partnered with Parity to launch the first Polkadot accelerator (we had Polkascan, Polkawallet, and Plasm/Aster come through the program) We invested in >10 Polkadot/Substrate projects including Acala, Astar, Manta, Unique Network, Bit Country, Composable, and Zeitgeist We committed >1M  DOT and >100k KSM tokens for Parachain Crowdloans for Acala, Moonbeam, Astar, Kilt, Bit Country, Centrifuge, Composable, and others We have authored and produced thought leadership on Polkadot through Medium articles and through our Web 3 Native podcast We have spoken at Polkadot events (DotCon 2019, Polkadot Singapore meetup, Polkadot Decoded) and hosted folks from the ecosystem at our accelerator in Singapore (including Gavin Wood and Bjorn Wagner) We’ve also supported the Filecoin ecosystem in a similar way and now are looking to expand the relationship with the Cosmos ecosystem and a number of other upcoming protocols. Can you also share insights into LongHash Ventures? What kind of projects are you focused on building and how has your journey been so far? We focus on building and investing in projects that are Web3 native, in a sense that these projects have unique business models that are not possible with Web2 technologies. They leverage the unique advantages that Web3 has to offer, such as on-chain digital ownership, tokenomics, and community governance. At this point, we are particularly interested in multi-chain infrastructure across the key verticals that we are bullish on, such as DeFi, GameFi, Metaverse, NFT and DAO. We also place a lot of focus on vision-driven founders. Speaking of compelling projects, what innovations do you think will define the transition towards web3 and a more open social and financial infrastructure? I think what defines Web3 is a fundamentally more equitable ownership structure and open/permissionless participation. We look forward to seeing more innovations around below key areas so that today’s internet population can be onboarded to Web3 en masse. Scalable and secure basic layers Better UI/UX for retail users to gain access to Web3 services without realizing they are Web3 services Privacy solutions that can protect users from being tracked on-chain Lastly, is there any advice that you would like to share with new crypto and DeFi investors? Do your own research and participate actively in the projects that you have invested in, which means trying out the product, immersing yourself in the community, and talking to the founding team to understand their vision (most founders are actually very friendly and approachable!). Additionally, understand that crypto is a risk asset and manage your exposure accordingly. Ownership in Web3 Needn't be Obtained Through Capital Contribution - Unhashed #28

Parachains are individual blockchains that work alongside the main blockchain in the Polkadot ecosystem. Each parachain has its niche and transactions are settled on the parachains network, preventing the main Polkadot blockchain from becoming congested. Projects that aim to become a Parachain on the Polkadot network must win a parachain slot auction, through a “crowd loan” process. Crowd loans enable supporters to temporarily loan out their DOT to assist their project of choice in winning the auction. In this post, we’ll look at five innovative Polkadot parachain projects. 1. Centrifuge is a decentralized finance (Defi) lending protocol that promises to make loans more accessible to small enterprises while also providing investors with a predictable income by bringing pooled liquidity into the conventional finance market. Centrifuge The protocol is based on Parity Substrate, a framework for building distributed blockchain systems on the Polkadot and Kusama networks. The platform’s decentralized application Tinlake is a marketplace for tokenized real-world assets where users can issue NFTs as collateral for loans, allowing them to acquire liquid cash from lenders. In exchange, investors can use standard business financing methods to get a more predictable return on their investments and protect themselves from the volatile nature of cryptocurrency markets. The platform is powered by the Centrifuge token (CFG), which offers blockchain security while also enabling holders to pay transaction fees, stake assets, and participate in the governance of Centrifuge. 2. Bit.Country is a platform that allows users to build 3D worlds, they can also build games and apps to be accessed within that world. The protocol aims to develop various degrees of social engagement across typical social media platforms and 3D virtual worlds such as Decentraland. The platform also aims to integrate virtual reality (VR) into its ecosystem. Users will be able to create their own NFT galleries, complete with markets, tokens, and community governance. Bit.Country Users may create their little virtual nation, which is a Bit.Country map with a finite amount of points. Its eventual form will be entirely determined by the members of the community. To encourage individuals to contribute to the community, land owners will be able to create or import their own tokens. Members of the community can use these funds to buy assets, pay for services, and even participate in community governance. Landowners set the incentive guidelines, which might take many different forms (content creating, holding events, shares, etc). 3. Acala is a cross-chain decentralized finance initiative that aims to become a Defi center for the Polkadot ecosystem as a whole. In addition to DOT-based assets and derivatives, the Acala platform offers a Polkadot native decentralized stablecoin, as well as liquid staking alternatives for DOT (LDOT) and interoperability with the Ethereum virtual machine EVM, among other features. Acala Acala is made up of two basic protocols. The first is the Honzon System, a decentralized stablecoin protocol that enables the minting of the Acala dollar, or aUSD, a digital asset collateralized US dollar stablecoin. The second protocol is Homa, a tokenized staking liquidity protocol that allows Defi protocols built on Polkadot to utilize a tokenized form of staked DOT called LDOT. Acala has also created a cross-chain DEX that will include wrapped assets like renBTC that can be used as collateral to mint a USD stablecoin, which I think is amazing. If you've already tried searching it up on CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko, the platform's native utility token is ACA. There's a good chance you didn't discover anything. 4. Moonbeam is a blockchain network in the Polkadot ecosystem that is developing a smart contract platform.
