As a part of this effort to embrace the open source community, a growing number of companies across all industries are backing and contributing to open source projects. Like boasting of its contribution to open source projects, an impressive are taking part in the advancement of corporate open source engagement. Google, Facebook, Intel, and Pivotal are only a few of the other big names that . Salesforce list of enterprises contribute heavily to open source projects Given these steps towards supporting open source, it’s tempting to believe that we have entered the golden age of open source, in which corporations and the open source community cooperate in a win-win-win development ecosystem. Unfortunately, a recently published security issue in a small open source project highlights the fact that there are still gaps in the relationship between the businesses who use open source components and the community of developers who not only write the code but are expected to maintain them over time. This recent incident reveals that it’s not all unicorns, rainbows, corporate love, and collaboration. The Vulnerability that Exposed Critical Flaws in the Open Source Community , like many open source projects that help fuel our software projects, was mostly a one-dev show. The simple static file server middleware that works with core HTTP, express/connect, or on the CL was  created by a young and eager developer about eight years ago. This small JavaScript component may have gone on to live a long and satisfying life in many a server across the land if it weren’t for a relatively mild open redirect security issue discovered in late April and published on the . Ecstatic npm security advisory Issues in open source components are discovered, published and fixed all of the time. This is actually an increasingly common practice as both the open source community and open source usage continue to grow. However, in this particular case, ecstatic’s primarily lone, hard-working-for-free creator and maintainer had had enough and wrote a lengthy and quite illuminating post , giving light quite a few issues. on GitHub According to ecstatic’s creator, after he had issued an updated version to fix a security vulnerability reported to the npm team, he was disappointed with the lack of support he received from the npm team that confirmed the issue and passed it on to him. He then requested that vulnerable versions of ecstatic be unpublished. It’s worth noting that this course of action has seen disastrous results in the past. In 2016, a developer after instant-messaging Kik's legal team claimed brand infringement over one of his modules, and npm appeared to take the corporation’s side. That’s when the world of JS applications found out that this included one extremely widely-used module that projects like Node and Babel used. The fallout was not pretty. withdrew his modules from npm app While ecstatic isn’t as gigantic as that notorious 11-line dependency, ecstatic's creator quickly found out that ecstatic powers quite a few projects, like , which, in turn, is used by some commercial outfits. Some of these commercial users were desperate to get back the outdated ecstatic versions, and according to ecstatic’s creator, felt entitled to demand a quick fix that supported the outdated versions that they were using. http-server Sadly, they were less enthusiastic about actually supporting or backing maintenance and updates. Open Source Labor: Free, As in Beer? ecstatic’s creator built the project, like many a young developer, as a labor of love. While he admits that publishing it under a permissive meant that it could be used by all sorts of users, including businesses, he found that some businesses were quite demanding of his time. MIT open source license He was disappointed to learn that as he continued to maintain and develop the project, most enjoyed his contribution and offered little to no additional support. Eight years later, when users demanded he re-release old versions and fix them to help support their “multi-million dollar enterprise solution” for free, he decided that he was done, and ended the project. Can we really blame him? The story of the relatively quiet demise of ecstatic highlights how versatile and complex the term “free” is when it comes to open source components. Just because a developer puts software out in the world for all to use doesn’t mean that they are at your beck and call. In fact, if your business depends on them, you might want to consider investing some resources into its maintenance, or you might find yourself in the unfortunate place where that anonymous multi-million dollar solution floundered. How to Make Sure Open Source Projects Stay Alive The reasons that led ecstatic’s creator to discontinue development and maintenance tells us a lot about the current state of the open source community — creators, maintainers, users, and everything in between. While many industry giants have come to embrace and support the community of open source developers, there are still countless open source projects that are built primarily on love, sweat, tears, and precious free time. Companies like , and projects like have found ways to help companies support the open source projects that they are using to ensure that the projects remain fresh and secure. Tidelift GitHub Sponsors If companies don’t start taking some of the weight off of independent open source developers’ shoulders, and help support the open source projects that help them create and ship their magic, we will find ourselves with many more ecstatic-like predicaments. Companies need to understand that while developers are passionate about — or at least devoted to — their open source project, it might not be their top priority. Their paid work, family, and other human activities may come first. If businesses depend on open source software, then they are going to have to acknowledge that just like in-house software, they need to be well resourced.

Our goal was to explore more efficient and real-time alternatives to GA, which, although effective, can be computationally expensive. Both approaches offer viable alternatives to GA for adaptive beamforming in satellite communication systems. These approaches not only reduce execution times but also maintain high system performance. Selection between the two approaches should be based on the specific requirements of the application, taking into account the trade-off between classification complexity and overall system performance. As a result, these findings open up new possibilities for implementing efficient, real-time adaptive beamforming in wireless communication systems. Future lines of research may include further optimizations of these approaches, exploration of hybrid models, or incorporation of additional features to improve performance and versatility. It may be well that I should put a short preface to this book. In the summer of 1878 my father told me that he had written a memoir of his own life. He did not speak about it at length, but said that he had written me a letter, not to be opened until after his death, containing instructions for publication. This letter was dated 30th April, 1876. I will give here as much of it as concerns the public: "I wish you to accept as a gift from me, given you now, the accompanying pages which contain a memoir of my life. My intention is that they shall be published after my death, and be edited by you. But I leave it altogether to your discretion whether to publish or to suppress the work;—and also to your discretion whether any part or what part shall be omitted. But I would not wish that anything should be added to the memoir. If you wish to say any word as from yourself, let it be done in the shape of a preface or introductory chapter." At the end there is a postscript: "The publication, if made at all, should be effected as soon as possible after my death." My father died on the 6th of December, 1882. It will be seen, therefore, that my duty has been merely to pass the book through the press conformably to the above instructions. I have placed headings to the right-hand pages throughout the book, and I do not conceive that I was precluded from so doing. Additions of any other sort there have been none; the few footnotes are my father's own additions or corrections. And I have made no alterations. I have suppressed some few passages, but not more than would amount to two printed pages has been omitted. My father has not given any of his own letters, nor was it his wish that any should be published. I see from my father's manuscript, and from his papers, that the first two chapters of this memoir were written in the latter part of 1875, that he began the third chapter early in January, 1876, and that he finished the record before the middle of April in that year. I state this, though there are indications in the book by which it might be seen at what time the memoir was being written. So much I would say by way of preface. And I think I may also give in a few words the main incidents in my father's life after he completed his autobiography. He has said that he had given up hunting; but he still kept two horses for such riding as may be had in or about the immediate neighbourhood of London. He continued to ride to the end of his life: he liked the exercise, and I think it would have distressed him not to have had a horse in his stable. But he never spoke willingly on hunting matters. He had at last resolved to give up his favourite amusement, and that as far as he was concerned there should be an end of it. In the spring of 1877 he went to South Africa, and returned early in the following year with a book on the colony already written. In the summer of 1878, he was one of a party of ladies and gentlemen who made an expedition to Iceland in the "Mastiff," one of Mr. John Burns' steam-ships. The journey lasted altogether sixteen days, and during that time Mr. and Mrs. Burns were the hospitable entertainers. When my father returned, he wrote a short account of . The book was printed, but was intended only for private circulation. How the "Mastiffs" went to Iceland Every day, until his last illness, my father continued his work. He would not otherwise have been happy. He demanded from himself less than he had done ten years previously, but his daily task was always done. I will mention now the titles of his books that were published after the last included in the list which he himself has given at the end of the second volume:— An Eye for an Eye, 1879 Cousin Henry, 1879 Thackeray, 1879 The Duke's Children, 1880 Life of Cicero, 1880 Ayala's Angel, 1881 Doctor Wortle's School, 1881 Frau Frohmann and other Stories, 1882 Lord Palmerston, 1882 The Fixed Period, 1882 Kept in the Dark, 1882 Marion Fay, 1882 Mr. Scarborough's Family, 1883 At the time of his death he had written four-fifths of an Irish story, called , shortly about to be published; and he left in manuscript a completed novel, called , which will be published by Messrs. Blackwood & Sons in 1884. The Landleaguers An Old Man's Love In the summer of 1880 my father left London, and went to live at Harting, a village in Sussex, but on the confines of Hampshire. I think he chose that spot because he found there a house that suited him, and because of the prettiness of the neighbourhood. His last long journey was a trip to Italy in the late winter and spring of 1881; but he went to Ireland twice in 1882. He went there in May of that year, and was then absent nearly a month. This journey did him much good, for he found that the softer atmosphere relieved his asthma, from which he had been suffering for nearly eighteen months. In August following he made another trip to Ireland, but from this journey he derived less benefit. He was much interested in, and was very much distressed by, the unhappy condition of the country. Few men knew Ireland better than he did. He had lived there for sixteen years, and his Post Office work had taken him into every part of the island. In the summer of 1882 he began his last novel, , which, as stated above, was unfinished when he died. This book was a cause of anxiety to him. He could not rid his mind of the fact that he had a story already in the course of publication, but which he had not yet completed. In no other case, except , did my father publish even the first number of any novel before he had fully completed the whole tale. The Landleaguers Framley Parsonage On the evening of the 3d of November, 1882, he was seized with paralysis on the right side, accompanied by loss of speech. His mind also had failed, though at intervals his thoughts would return to him. After the first three weeks these lucid intervals became rarer, but it was always very difficult to tell how far his mind was sound or how far astray. He died on the evening of the 6th of December following, nearly five weeks from the night of his attack. I have been led to say these few words, not at all from a desire to supplement my father's biography of himself, but to mention the main incidents in his life after he had finished his own record. WebVR If you are wondering why you’ve started seeing more and more discussion of WebVR in the headlines, you’re not alone. This year alone, we’ve seen major announcements from and , as well as the continued growth of independent WebVR communities, such as JanusVR: Google Firefox This is just the beginning; there will be much, much more from here. The roots of WebVR actually started with the conceptualization of Virtual Markup Reality Language (VRML) which ultimately did not take off, but paved the way for the burgeoning VR web as we are coming to know it. 23 years ago What is WebVR? is a JavaScript API for rendering 3D graphics within a browser, meaning that, if you punched in a link in the browser for a 3D website, you would find yourself in a 3D space (whether on your computer browser or within a VR headset). In laymen’s terms, WebVR is a low-barrier entry point to develop VR for the web without having to be familiar with WebGL, which can be frustrating for beginners to grasp. WebVR In its ease of use and lack of friction for consumers, WebVR presents a glimmer of hope for the mainstream adoption of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). While there is certainly a place for high-end experiences and hardware, not all VR needs to function as a “high-end” experience. In fact, for many use cases (things like going to basic websites), it’s much more important that these experiences be accessible than it is that they sport cutting-edge graphics. Ultimately, it’s these experiences that will drive mass-adoption of immersive technologies. The ‘Casual VR’ Phase Why and how? While we move through what some call the “trough of disillusionment,” for VR, WebVR — what we can call “Casual VR” — paves a way for consumers without state-of-the-art hardware to experience VR, through the web on multiple platforms. Virtuleap also organized the first global WebVR hackathon. “For application domains such as education and heritage, developing VR scenes and experiences for the Web is highly important,” said Stone. “[This] promotes accessibility by many beneficiaries without the need (necessarily) for expensive and sophisticated computing or human interface hardware.” This democratized approach opens up possibilities in education far beyond what we’re seeing today. “I also think that WebVR, as a JavaScript API, also enables a wide range of future students and young developers to ‘dip their toes into the water’ and start to build portfolios demonstrating their capabilities, ultimately to future employers,” said Stone. “I remember the promise of the days of VRML and products such as SGI’s Cosmo and Cortona3D (which still available today, of course). But the ability to be able to open up interactive — and quite impressive — demos of VR experiences that existed in higher quality form on specialised platforms, became an amazing marketing tool in the late 1990s and 2000s.” Creating VR/AR content for WebVR vs native apps So you saw the ‘ ’ portal demos that have taken the internet by storm. It has unlocked more creative minds to explore creating VR and AR for the web. It was only a few weeks before we saw people hacking ARKit into WebViews. There are a number of other experimentations around AR on the web: the integration of Argon.js into A-Frame, a Chromium extension that works on Tango (now ARCore) devices, and AR.js. Another exciting development for WebVR was Google’s announcement of ARCore . this week “By the end of the year all key global mobile phone brands would have announced their support for WebVR, and will have devices to support it out by Q4 2017 or Q1 2018,” said Christopher Gomez, XR industry advisor and angel investor. “And with ARKit and ARCore in the mix, we will have a vibrant mix of platforms and ideas. Immersive technologies are here to stay — it will be a reality for everybody. The ‘Metaverse’ — it’s real.” Experimentation is Key Experimenting is needed in this phase of VR — the creative power of communities is huge. Developers are able to compile or export assets into different native or web platforms. “Nowadays it is possible to use WebVR in Unity with a , and support for WebVR will be integrated into Unity WebGL, making Unity projects work without modifications,” said Diego González-Zúñiga, developer advocate for Samsung Internet_._ “It is a matter of time until the engine will be able to create VR experiences running on the WebVR implementation of a browser.” plugin “Augmented City” #ARCity As WebVR content creators and developers start to converge worldwide, in Singapore, the community assembled at an ‘Augmented City’ experiential xLab in July.
