Private fields Previously, all class fields must be defined in the constructor. And there is no private fields. All fields can be accessed from outside. I’ve been in the cybersecurity industry for about 20 years and have worked in a variety of leadership, advisory, strategy, sales, marketing, product management, and technical roles across the Asia Pacific and Europe in some of the world's leading companies, including McAfee, Ernst & Young, and IBM. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Avertro is a venture-backed cybersecurity software company. We are your cybersecurity headquarters and the world's first SaaS Cyber Management Decision System (MDS) that helps leaders manage the business of cyber using defensible insights to determine what’s essential. What is the origin story? Avertro was founded out of the Antler VC incubator program as part of the first-ever cohort in Australia. We’ve since gone on to graduate from the CyRise accelerator and raised a pre-seed round of funding from a consortium of VCs and angels. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Our team is diverse, and we have a great culture and values that were defined prior to the founding of the company. We all want the right outcomes for each other and genuinely care about what we’re doing. When I was the CTO for McAfee APAC, executive leaders and board members consistently asked me why the industry wasn’t solving the problem Avertro addresses. Our team has the relevant set of experiences and deep expertise in tackling the problem in prior roles. We collectively possess an unparalleled background in business, cybersecurity, and technology and have conducted further validation and R&D. Most importantly, we are willing to think creatively and differently about building a solution to solve the key problems we’ve identified. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Still working towards reducing the impact of cybercrime on the world, but at the same time being frustrated and wondering why no one was adequately addressing the problem Avertro solves. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? We have a set of revenue targets that we aim for. But we ultimately measure ourselves against the outcomes we deliver for our customers and the alignment of the team to our values and common goals. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? In less than two years of existence, we’ve managed to grow to a team of 15 and onboard customers onto our SaaS platform that most other companies would be envious of. We’re extremely proud of the value we’re able to bring as an early-stage startup to such established large organizations. We’ve also been able to achieve 14x YoY ARR growth between 2020 and 2021. What technologies are you currently most excited about and most worried about? And why? I have a love/hate relationship with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). They hold a lot of promise and can definitely bring a lot of technologies to the next level. The promise of AI and ML is exciting. Unfortunately, there are many people who do not understand the concepts adequately and continue to abuse those terms, which is why they’ve become throwaway buzzwords. Even when used properly, there are other considerations that need to be taken into account, particularly around misuse, ethics, and privacy. What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? The alignment with topic areas of interest in cybersecurity, tech, business, and startups makes sense. This is what it would be If you were to encapsulate the essence of efficiency into one simple sentence, what would it be? The Formula-1 Grand Prix motor race has something to teach us technologists, when it comes to our software and Agile delivery teams. My one sentence will come… The 19th of June 2016 was a special day historical day in Baku, Azerbaijan. The European Grand Prix Formula One motor race was held on that day. The race marked the 23rd running of the European Grand Prix of the Formula One World Championship. And first run ever of the Formula One Grand Prix in Azerbaijan. Lots of action, and lots of Drama that day on the tracks. Team Mercedes won that day with Nico Rosenberg, leading team Ferrari taking only the second place. But there was something else massively impressive about that race, and what is far more interesting to what happened on the track that day for me, was the action that occurred off the track. I am talking about equaling the record for the fastest pit stop ever of 1.92 seconds. Some say the record was even to a previous record from 2013 in Austin Texas, other believe it was broken in Baku, and this debate was never really settled. But putting that debate aside, for our sake we can agree that this sub two seconds result was enough to amaze the world and fans of motor racing. It took well over a minute few decades ago to get back on track. But the crew and engineers found ways to achieve better outcome in less time. To understand why a sub two seconds is so impressive for fixing or repairing a motor race car, one needs to understand the amount of activities that goes into such a single stop. The car pulls into the pit and comes to a complete stop, the front and rear jacks are fitted and lifted, the gunner loosens the wheel nuts, the first tire carrier takes away the worn tire and the second replaces it with a fresh tire, the gunner tightens the wheel nuts, the jacks drop and the driver pulls away. Each of these stages has to be completed before the next can begin. There is no room for mistakes. So the planning, execution, and practice of the pit stop crew has to be brought to perfection. Planning, because every crew member must be perfectly seated in the garage area and have a well-practiced path to the car when approaching, to avoid any bumping into each other and loosing time. Execution, Take the gunner for example, tightening the wheel nuts too tight may cause loosing time at the next pit stop, but tightening too loose may cause the tire to pop off the car during the race. And practice, Because the crew needs to practice these sequence of events together as a team, so they can blindly execute on the day of the race. Fast forwarding approximately four years later to Silverstone Circuit, UK. The day is 14th of July 2019. The 2019 Formula 1 Rolex British Grand Prix kicks off. All the big names and promising drivers come together to an event being broadcasted not just all over the UK, but all over Europe and all over the world. The big crews are attending like Mercedes and Ferrari, lots of action going on that morning, huge drama on the track, but one drama off the track. The pit crew managed to set a new record for a pit stop in Formula One by changing four tires on Pierre Gasly’s machine in just 1.91 seconds. Just enough to break the record from three years back in Baku. And the world of motor racing stood amazed once again, and so was the world of engineering that was pushed one step further to its limits with perfect planning, execution, and practice. When time needed to condense and the exact same repair parts needed treatment, the crew found ways to cascade their steps smarted  and achieve better outcome in less time. Just two weeks later, Hockenheimring, Germany. The day is 28th of July 2019. The 2019 Formula 1 Mercedes-Benz German Grand Prix kicks off, marking this race as the 64th World Championship event. All the big names and promising drivers come together to an event being broadcasted not just all over the Germany, but all over Europe and all over the world. The big crews are attending like Mercedes and Ferrari, lots of action going on that morning, huge drama on the track, but one drama off the track. You got it right! The pit stop crew have gone even quicker, and completed a full pit stop start to finish at Hockenheim in an incredible 1.88 seconds. Pushing once again the limits of engineering a step further, with planning, execution and practice at a higher perfection than ever before. Fast forwarding once again four months ahead, to São Paulo, Brazil. The day is 17th of November 2019. The 2019 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix kicks off. All the big names and promising drivers come together once again. This event is being broadcasted all over south America and all over the world. Millions of fans are watching as cars stop at the pit stops and continue driving. The big crews are attending, lots of action, huge drama on the track, but one drama off the track. And a new world record for the fastest pit stop has just been achieved in Formula one with just 1.82 seconds. Making this the fastest pit stop ever recorded till then, and from that day on. The sport of motor racing exists since the early days, and so do pit stops. Back in the days when a driver came to a stop it looked more like a timeout in a basketball game. The driver was chatting with the crew and coach, discussing how the race was going, tactics for the next phase, and during this time the car was repaired to proceed. It took well over a minute few decades ago to get back on track. But when time needed to condense and the exact same repair parts needed treatment, the crew and engineers found ways to cascade their steps smarted, with less interference and achieving better outcome in less time. That, to me, encapsulates what efficiency in software delivery, and Agile driven organizations is. Getting more, out of the same. Getting more speed out of the same conditions, more throughput out of the same team, better results with the same rules and tools. Software delivery teams efficiency or Agile structured teams efficiency can be seen as increasing the output when the conditions and teams are the same. Pit stops came down from nearly a minute to less than two seconds, in about thirty years. The conditions still involve a race car, a driver, a track, and a crew. Conditions and ecosystem didn’t change. What changed was engineering and process. For the pit stops what changed was better planning, execution, and practice. Allowing efficiency to increase over time.

These titles below are packed with clever, interconnected level design, challenging gameplay and maybe interesting stories. Whether you’re looking for more 2D action or would like something in similar fashion but in 3D, this list of games like Hollow Knight has it all. This list includes the following titles: Salt and Sanctuary Dark Souls Axiom Verge Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove Guacamelee! The Surge Ori and the Blind Forest Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Hyper Light Drifter Get ready to die. A lot. 1. Salt and Sanctuary Way grittier than Hollow Knight, puts you in the shoes of a sailor stuck on a mysterious island full of scary monsters. The 2D action RPG features hundreds of different weapons you can craft, find and upgrade. If you're looking for a darker, more visceral title, then Salt and Sanctuary is an excellent choice. Salt and Sanctuary First released on PS4 and then PC, Xbox One, PS Vita and Nintendo Switch, this 2016 title is sure to keep you on your toes throughout its unforgiving world no matter which platform you play it on. 2. Dark Souls The game that inspired Hollow Knight and many others we now call souls-likes - is a must play for any metroidvania and Hollow Knight fan. Superb world design, memorable characters & boss fights make the adventure through the unforgiving Lordran a journey you won’t forget. Dark Souls Initially launched for PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2011, Dark Souls soon received it’s much-awaited PC port in August 2012 in the form of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, featuring top-notch new content that would later get added to console versions as DLC called Artorias of the Abyss. The game got remastered in 2018 for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. 3. Axiom Verge sees you shoot your way through all kinds of aliens throughout a surreal alien world. There's no shortage of challenging exploration and puzzle-solving in this pixelated metroidvania. Axiom Verge The game was first released for the PS4 at the end of March in 2015 with a 84 score on , then on PC in May the same year, with the Xbox One, Wii U and PS Vita versions launching throughout 2016. In October 2017 it also came out on the Nintendo Switch, but whichever platform you go with, Axiom Verge is an absolute blast to play, well worth its $19.99 / £14.99 / 17,99€ price of admission. Metacritic 4. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove isn’t just one brilliant game. No, it's 5 brilliant games in one! Four of them take you through lighthearted adventures, with each campaign featuring a different character: Shovel Knight, Plague Knight, Specter Knight and King Knight. The first one, called Shovel of Hope, is even fully playable in co-op! Each Knight has something unique to offer. Shovel Knight lets you use the shovel to dig treasure and hit enemies by jumping on them with your shovel, which causes you to bounce and possibly reach a location you normally couldn’t. Customizable bombs are the name of the game for Plague Knight, who uses them to burst through the air; Specter Knight can wall run but also dash through various objects, slashing them in the process while King Knight shoulder bashes and spins across well-designed levels. 5. Guacamelee! is a colorful Mexican-inspired metroidvania with 4-player local co-op, an advanced melee combo system and platforming that sees you jump across multiple dimensions! You play as a farmer on a quest to save El Preisdente’s daughter from getting sacrificed for an evil ploy to fuse two worlds into one. Guacamelee! The game first came out in 2013, but received a Super Turbo Championship Edition a year later, improving existing content while also adding new cool stuff. A came out in 2018, which you should also definitely check out once you’re done playing this one. sequel 6. The Surge If you’re looking for a sci-fi souls-like, then is worth a look. You play as an employee of a megacorporation who slices their way through various types of robots while geared up in a cool exoskeleton. The game features a limb dismemberment system that affects the kind of loot you get from a slain enemy based on the body part you cut off. The Surge You can play this 2017 title on PS4, Xbox One and PC, and if you do finish it, you can hop on straight to the for more epic machine-slashing action! 2019 sequel 7. Ori and the Blind Forest sees you platform your way through breathtaking hand-painted 2D environments in an effort to save your home, the forest of Nibel. While there are checkpoints scattered throughout this metroidvania, you can also create your own if you have the needed resource, a scarce one you collect throughout the game. Ori and the Blind Forest Excellent parkour mechanics coupled with clever world design, puzzle-solving, a touching story and an enthralling soundtrack make Ori and the Blind Forest a title metroidvania fans don’t wanna miss. The sequel, , is also brilliant. Ori and the Will of the Wisps 8. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Taking place after the events of Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, has you play as an abandoned Padawan on a journey to restore the Jedi Order. As you explore the beautiful metroidvania-like world you’ll unlock upgradeable Force abilities usable in challenging 3rd-person lightsaber combat, but also for puzzle-solving and entering previously inaccessible areas. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order If you’re a Star Wars fan, then this souls-like is a must-play. But even if you’re not and are just looking for games like Hollow Knight, then you’ll still likely find it an enjoyable adventure. 9. Hyper Light Drifter There’s no dialogue to guide you through the fantastic-looking 16-bit world of , a top-down 2D metroidvania full of secrets and wonderful fast-paced combat. Slash and dash your way through various different enemies and bosses as you unlock new movement and sword skills. Hyper Light Drifter Aside from flashy melee combat there are also a number of ranged weapons you can get, with ammo being refilled via melee attacks, making combat constantly varied and intense. Final Thoughts These are just some of the amazing games like Hollow Knight you certainly don’t want to miss out on. Whether you’re looking for more 2D metroidvanias or similar 3D titles, I hope this list helped you find a new memorable title to play, or at least convince you to play a game you’ve seen before but never seemed to dive into for whatever reason.
